Just about every competitor in the field at the Sacramento River Bassmaster Elite Series says they were around big fish or saw multiple big ones over the course of the first two days. Mark Davis compared the area he was in to an aquarium. Another competitor said it felt like he was fishing in a Bass Pro Shops fish tank.

There’s no denying the California Delta harbors some giant bass. The only tricky part has been getting them to bite, especially when they’re in the midst of the spawning cycle like some of the fish are this week.

Being comfortable in the surroundings is certainly playing a big part in how this event is shaking out and it’s no surprise that the top of the leaderboard is littered with anglers who have considerable experience at the Delta.

Aaron Martens, a California native who now calls Alabama home, hasn’t had any problems at all. The two-time Angler of the Year and former Elite Series winner at the Delta caught the day’s heaviest bag (26-09) and moved into the lead at the halfway point. He has 51-04, six ounces ahead of day-1 leader and San Jose native Chris Zaldain, who followed up his 30-pound effort with 20-07.

Justin Lucas, another Alabama resident who grew up not far from Sacramento, bagged a stout 25-14 to move into 3rd place with 47-11. Ish Monroe, another Golden Stater whose fishing style is tailor-made for the Delta, caught 23-02 and sits in 4th with 45-04.

Keith Combs is the oddball of the Top 5 – he’s from Texas – but he kept himself in the hunt with 19-07 to push his total to 44-04.

Here's a look at the Top 12 at the halfway point, with deficit margin from Martens indicated by red numbers in parentheses:

1. Aaron Martens: 51-04
2. Chris Zaldain: 50-14 (00-06)
3. Justin Lucas: 47-11 (3-09)
4. Ish Monroe: 45-04 (6-00)
5. Keith Combs: 44-04 (7-00)
6. Clifford Pirch: 43-14 (7-06)
7. Ken Iyobe: 43-01 (8-03)
8. Bobby Lane: 38-15 (12-05)
9. Chris Lane: 38-11 (12-09)
10. Dean Rojas: 38-06 (12-14)
11. Kevin VanDam: 37-09 (13-11)
12. Tim Horton: 37-07 (13-13)

So far, five anglers have sacked 20 pounds each day – Martens, Zaldain, Lucas, Monroe and rookie Ken Iyobe, who had a 10-01 in his bag today that helped him move into 7th with 43-01. John Murray had the most impressive turnaround in the field today. After weighing three fish for 8-13 Thursday, he caught 23-04 and made the weekend in 29th place, a little more than 5 pounds out of the Top 12.

Jordan Lee, Greg Vinson and John Crews all rebounded from 12-pound efforts on day 1 and each caught 20-plus today to move into the Top 30. Skeet Reese saw his weight fall off by more than half today (25-08 to 11-06) and he tumbled from 2nd to 14th with 36-14.

Traffic and fishing pressure in the prime areas around the Delta is expected to increase on Saturday as a 100-boat, 2-day tournament launching out of Bethel Island gets started tomorrow.

More chamber of commerce weather is in store for the weekend with temperatures in the upper 80s and winds out of the southwest at 10 to 15 mph, a switch from the north winds the field had the first two days.

The Top 52 will compete Saturday and the Top 12 after day 3 will move on to fish Sunday, when the winner will be determined by highest cumulative weight.

Martens has weighed in three fish weighing close to or more than 8 pounds already.

Martens Knows It’s Far From Over

> Day 2: 5, 26-09 (10, 51-04)

Martens said he feels like the tournament is just getting started and the final 2 days are going to be an uphill climb, especially if he wants to hold onto the top spot in the standings.

“I’ve led a lot of these tournaments, but I’ve only won two Elites,” he said. “I’ve been in this position plenty of times, but I don’t think anything of it. I just have to figure out how to win. I’m just trying to think about going fishing.

“I’m very pleased with how I’ve done so far. It feels like I’ve been a little lucky. I’m just trying to find areas that have them and that’s getting harder each day. In practice, it was easy.”

His bag was anchored by an 8-pounder today and he’s now caught three fish within 4 ounces of each other around the 8-pound mark over the first two days. He also caught a 6-pounder right at the end of the day today that helped him upgrade.

“I’m just trying to get a couple big ones,” he said. “I was hoping to get five big ones and it could still happen.

“You’ve got to pick and choose which ones you’re going to spend an hour on,” he added. “That’s going to be the key to it. I’m making a long run, and I just don’t have much time to waste on a fish that’s never going to bite.”

2nd: No Giants For Zaldain

> Day 2: 5, 20-07 (10, 50-14)

Zaldain says there’s a certain level of comfort that comes with competing at a venue that he has a good working knowledge of. It’s certainly worked in his favor so far.

“All four of us know where the big ones spawn,” he said, referring to his California comrades in the Top 5. “It doesn’t take long to realize they’re spawning and not feeding so the biggest thing is being patient. I’m sure all four of us are running the juice.”

While he didn’t tangle with any double-digit bass today, he was pleased with the adjustments he made as the conditions continued to change.

“I’m definitely happy with my day,” he said. “Despite losing a big one, I’ll take 20 pounds. If I don’t get below 20, I’ll be right where I want to be.

“The 3-pounders I’d been catching kind of converged into one pattern,” he added. “I caught all of my fish today bed-fishing and just blind-casting. It got hot and calm and slick and I just caught the first part of the incoming today and it wasn’t moving very fast, so my moving bait and current pattern didn’t pick up.”

While sight-fishing accounted for most of his weight, he says another pattern is starting to emerge that’s centered around bluegill beds.

“I’ve pitched a dropshot or plastics around and if I’m getting bit by bluegills, I’ll back off to the perimeter because the big ones are lurking just off the outside edges of those areas,” he said. “They’re either up spawning or just outside where the bluegill beds are.”

He said he didn’t stop to fish the area that produced his 12-pounder on Thursday because he noticed plenty of locals out pre-fishing for upcoming tournaments and he didn’t want to be seen in there.

Justin Lucas is putting on a good showing in his hometown so far.

3rd: Lucas Enjoyed Fast Start

> Day 2: 5, 25-14 (10, 47-11)

Lucas has put a sub-par practice behind him and on Friday he celebrated his 29th birthday by catching 16 pounds in the first hour of fishing.

“I’ve had two big flipping bites and three big bed-fish that have saved everything for me,” he said. “I’ve caught five fish over 5 pounds so far. I’m just piecing things together as I go.”

He set out today trying to get 15 pounds in the boat before he went looking for ideal bed-fishing conditions. He wound up with 16, including a 6 1/2-pounder he called a bonus fish.

“I gambled and thought that two more big ones off beds could give me a big day so I ran another 35 minutes and caught the low tide and found more big ones,” he said. “They were just old banks I remember fishing 10 years ago. They had hard bottom along them and that’s never changed. It’s not that I was fishing history, I just went back to where I knew they spawned.”

He’s well aware of the fickle nature of Delta bass, but he’s hopeful he can keep pace with his fellow Californians.

“I could go catch 8 pounds tomorrow, but that’s how I feel every day I ever fish anyway,” he said. “I lost a 4-pounder off a bed today so hopefully I’ll be able to go back to catch that one and maybe flip up some 3 1/2- or 4-pounders. That’d be huge. The key is finding those 7- or 8-pounders.”

4th: Monroe Locked In

> Day 2: 5, 23-02 (10, 45-04)

Monroe said he put an extra rod in the truck this morning just in case he thought he might need it. Tomorrow, he might bring along a couple other baits that have a tendency to work well at the Delta. If he keeps going like he’s been fishing the first 2 days, though, he won’t need but a couple rods on his deck.

“Realistically, nothing else has worked for me, but my standard-issue stuff,” he said, referring to frogging and flipping patterns.

He changed nothing about his approach or strategy today and went through the same areas he fished Thursday.

“I fished the same way and I’m just fishing what’s in front of me,” he said. “The good thing was today I didn’t lose any.

“The area I’m in has the right kind of grass and the right kind of cheese mats and it’s an area they live in. It’s not that they come to this area. They live there all year long and you can catch fish there 12 months out of the year.”

He went through about 10 keepers today, but the only number that matters to him this week is 5.

“It’s the California Delta and if you fish for five big ones, you’re probably going to end up with an average limit of 13 to 14 pounds,” he said. “You will get that big bite just fishing around and if you put two in the boat, all the better. You might have a bad day fishing like that, but more times than not, when you fish for five big ones you have an opportunity to weigh in a big bag.”

Ish Monroe believes he's around the caliber of fish that could carry him to a win this week.

He thinks the other Delta veterans ahead of him share the same mindset.

“These are all Delta guys and I guarantee you that Aaron’s fishing for big ones,” he added. “He might have a fairy wand in his hand or a dropshot, but he’s fishing for big ones.

"We’re not out there throwing a crank or spinnerbait or a ChatterBait trying to mix in limit fish. We’re fishing for 5 big ones.”

5th: Combs Hanging In There

> Day 2: 5, 19-07 (10, 44-04)

Combs caught just six fish today, all coming on the falling tide, and he’s hoping there are enough quality fish in the area he’s been fishing to hold him over through tomorrow.

“I know this is a tricky place,” he said. “I’ve had some good days and I think I’m a in a good area. I just really wish I had another area I could fish in the tide because when my tide goes away, I’m not catching crap. Those guys (ahead of me) know that stuff.”

While the falling tide is happening an hour later each morning, giving him a longer optimum window, he’s hoping more fish pull in there.

“I don’t know if I depleted the fish out of my area,” he said. “I caught a lot yesterday just fishing and today I didn’t catch a lot, so that’s got me concerned. I think I’m doing the best I can do with what I've got, but I know don’t fully understand this place.”

He didn’t have any bedding fish to run to right away so he “just went fishing” and caught his limit. After that, he came across what he estimated to be a double-digit fish on bed that he spent the rest of the day trying to agitate into biting.

“She’d stay on the bed, but wasn’t real aggressive,” he said.

Notable

> Day 2 stats – 112 anglers, 109 limits (9 more than yesterday), 1 four, 1 three, 1 one.

> Randy Allen will draw his first career Elite Series check this week. After going the entire 2008 Elite Series season without a money finish and the first two events of this year, he’ll blast off tomorrow in 13th place with 37-00.
