Chris Zaldain referred to his strategy this week as “freestyle fishing.” If he continues on the path he started down today, it’ll be the winning strategy.

With more than a dozen years of experience fishing the California Delta, Zaldain said it would’ve been easy to fall into the trap of fishing memories and return to places that have been productive over the years. He resisted those urges for the most part today and “fished the moment” on the opening day of the Sacramento River Elite Series.

The result was an impressive 30-07 stringer that was anchored by a 12-00 goliath that had his competitors “oohing” and “ahhing.” That fish alone weighed more than the day-1 weights of 37 other anglers – that’s one-third of the field.

“What went through my mind when I hooked it is I wanted to get it on camera,” he said. “Then it jumped and I said, ‘Heck with that.’ I just wanted to get it in the boat.”

It’s the biggest fish he’s caught at the Delta (he’s caught a 14-pounder elsewhere in his home state) and the biggest bass caught in an Elite Series event since Mike Iaconelli’s 12-13 at Lake Amistad in 2009.

While he did wrangle the 12-pounder out of an area known to harbor big fish, Zaldain said adjusting to the current conditions will continue to be a major key the rest of the way.

“The four years I’ve spent on tour have taught me to keep adapting,” he said. “The entire 90-minute ride back in today, I was asking myself what am I going to do tomorrow. I’m just going to fish the moment.”

Zaldain sits atop a leaderboard that has a definite Western flavor to it at the top, not to mention some dynamic grass and shallow-water anglers and a guy named VanDam. Half of the Top 12 either live in California or grew up there. Among them is Skeet Reese, who’s fresh off a win at Lake Guntersville earlier this month. He caught 25-08 today – his third straight 25-pound plus bag going back to day 3 at Guntersville – and sits in 2nd.

Keith Combs, who’s no stranger to big-bass fisheries, is 3rd with 24-13. Checking in with 24-11 in 4th was former Delta winner and California native Aaron Martens while Clifford Pirch, an Arizona resident with plenty of experience and success up and down the West Coast, is 5th with 24-00.

Here's a look at the Top 12 after the opening day of competition, with deficit margin from Zaldain indicated by red numbers in parentheses:

1. Chris Zaldain: 30-07
2. Skeet Reese: 25-08 (4-15)
3. Keith Combs: 24-13 (5-10)
4. Aaron Martens: 24-11 (5-12)
5. Clifford Pirch: 24-00 (6-07)
6. Kevin VanDam: 22-05 (8-02)
7. Ish Monroe: 22-02 (8-05)
8 (tie). Justin Lucas: 21-13 (8-10)
8 (tie). Bernie Schultz: 21-13 (8-10)
10. Ken Iyobe: 21-12 (8-11)
11. Bobby Lane: 21-02 (9-05)
12. Koby Kreiger: 21-00 (9-07)

Zaldain’s giant fell an ounce shy of cracking the Top 10 list for biggest fish ever caught in B.A.S.S. competition. Still tops on the list is Mark Tyler’s 14-09 that was caught at the Delta in 1999. David Walker and Tim Horton are tied for 10th with 12-01.

John Crews, who won at the Delta when the Elite Series last visited the area in 2010 and came into this event as the leader in Angler of the Year points, caught 11-13 and sits in 79th place.

Seventeen anglers cracked the 20-pound mark today as most in the field made the approximately 90-minute run from Sacramento down to the California Delta, navigating through numerous no-wake zones along the way. Once there, they encountered miles upon miles of channels and canals and sloughs lined with rock and fertile vegetation where plenty of fish were either cruising the shallows looking to spawn or already on beds. The windows of opportunity to find fish in a willing-to-bite mood were scant and heavily influenced by the tide swings.

Some anglers lamented that fish they pegged yesterday or Tuesday in certain areas were nowhere to be found upon arriving today.

Temperatures are expected to soar into the 90s Friday with a northwest breeze, another day of stable weather that could bring more fish in to spawn.

The Top 52 after Friday will advance to Saturday and the Top 12 after day 3 will move on to fish Sunday, when the winner will be determined by highest cumulative weight.

Reactive Approach Key for Zaldain

> Day 1: 5, 30-07

As exciting and exhilarating as day 1 was for Zaldain, he knows he can’t rest on it. He’s approaching tomorrow with an open mind and will continue to let the conditions dictate his next move.

“Catching a 12 again will be tough,” he said. “In my eyes, I’m not leading a tournament. I’m just going out there and fishing. I don’t want to lay in bed tonight wondering about where I’m going tomorrow or what I’m throwing and stuff like that. I’m gonna smell the air and go from there. It’s the Delta and I think the best way to approach any body of water, especially this one, is not getting locked into one area or bait or tidal phase.”

“Today, I was more reactive in how I fished,” he said. “The wind would change and I would adjust. I wasn’t being proactive and trying to force something. I’d let the conditions tell me what to do.”

He said he caught his fish on a variety of baits and techniques, but putting himself in areas with big-fish potential was the key. In addition to the 12-pounder, he also caught a 7-06.

“The main thing was putting myself in those spawning areas,” he added. “I know where those big ones spawn and I’m looking for six bites a day. I’m not trying to catch as many as I can and if I can get six, I think they’ll be the right kind. With a 90-minute run each way, it works out to one big fish an hour.”

He added that there’s a “cool story” behind the 12-pounder, but he won’t divulge it until after the tournament. He did mention that he didn’t go into the area he caught it from during practice, but while heading south this morning, “something felt right” about going in there.

“I knew big ones spawn in there and it was my first stop of the morning,” he said. “I just tried to put myself in those spawning areas and looked for those clues. Sight-fishing isn’t my primary thing. I was just on my way to my primary thing and I just decided to fish around that big-fish spawning area.”

While he’s not expecting to catch 30-plus pounds again Friday, he’s expecting to bring in another impressive stringer to stay near the top of the leaderboard.

“From here on out, the goal is 22 to 24 pounds for the next 3 days,” he said. “If I can do that, I think I’ll be in good shape. There will be a lot of flip-flopping here and the tide phase will have a lot to do with it. You see it even in local tournaments.”

Keith Combs says he is getting more comfortable reading the tidal swings.

3rd: Combs ‘Figured Out Some Things’

> Day 1: 5, 24-13

Combs admitted he’s still a little shaky when it comes to figuring out the tide cycles, but he got into a groove today that put him among the leaders.

“I think I figured out some things,” he said. “I ran around a lot today and did a lot of running and gunning. I don’t fully understand the tide, but catching that bag makes me feel a little better about it. I think I have a handle on what a certain tide looks like and I used that to my advantage.”

He said he made a 75-minute run to his first stop and then ran even farther later on to pick off a bedding fish that he’d pegged in practice. There were others in spawning areas that he’d hoped to work on, but most were gone, either caught by someone else or moved on altogether.

“I don’t know what the deal is with that,” he said. “On Tuesday, I found a 9- or 10-pounder that was very aggressive. I went back and checked on her Wednesday and she was gone. I checked again today and she wasn’t there. All the big ones were gone, but what’s weird is when you find one it’s usually ready to bite, but you have to find it that day.”

He wound up catching 15 keepers today, including plenty of 2-pounders that barely warranted a reaction when he caught them. He weighed in three caught sight-fishing and two “just fishing,” he said. He plans on sticking with a sight-fishing game plan, especially with the conditions they have.

“That’s the only sure thing,” he said. “If you’re fishing, a guy could catch a big bag or 12 pounds. With sight-fish, you know what you’re spending your time doing. I think whoever wins, sight-fishing will be part of their deal. Maybe not all of it, but it’ll be a factor.”

With the tide scenarios over the next few days setting up to bring optimum conditions closer to the middle of the day, he thinks the weights could be consistent through the balance of the tournament.

“It looks like we’re going to deal with less low water every day and that’s a good thing,” he added. “I’m still learning as I go.”

4th: Martens Made Up for Slow Start

> Day 1: 5, 24-11

Martens made the most of a day which started with a lengthy run to the Delta only to find areas he wanted to start on covered up by other competitors.

“All of the fish I thought were easy were taken already,” he said. “The other stuff I had was deeper and harder to see so it was hard to tell if they were there or had been caught already.

“I scrambled all day and ran to some random stuff. I went to some waypoints and caught some off those.”

He said he might reverse course Friday and start where he finished today – on a 7-pound class fish on bed that wasn’t quite in the mood to bite when Martens left it.

“These are hard decisions here,” he said. “I’m just going to wing it. That’s what you have to do at the Delta. You can’t get stuck on an idea or a game plan.”

Clifford Pirch said sight-fishing was part of his day-1 strategy.

5th: Pirch Hoped For More

> Day 1: 5, 24-00

Pirch was thrilled to have the outcome he did today, but he was left to wonder what could’ve been had he been able to cull out his two smallest fish.

“It could’ve gone a lot worse,” he said. “The only thing was I had two little ones. I got pretty lucky to get three oversized ones.”

His biggest was 8-01.

“I would’ve liked to have added a few more pounds,” he added.

He was among the throng of anglers to run to the Delta and he mixed in sight-fishing with other techniques to fill his livewell.

“I really thought I could catch 20 pounds and get a limit or 4s and 5s,” he said. “That didn’t happen as easy as I thought it should. We split up a lot of fish among a lot of anglers and were splitting them up with some seals and otters, too. I think they got a head start on some of us. Overall, it was fun.”

He noted that one of the biggest challenges of this event will be simply making it back to the ramp on time.

“So many things have to go right to get there and get back,” he said. “It’s such a long dang ways and there’s all kinds of stuff (going on). You could have a couple big yachts in the canals or the wind blowing a different way. I had to leave early today just to be safe. I was thinking yesterday about just how many things factor into this deal here. It’s incredible the variables and things you have to think through. It’s such a fun place to fish, but only getting to fish for a short window of time makes it intense.”

7th: Monroe Still Likes His Chances

> Day 1: 5, 22-02

Ish Monroe, who’s coming off a 20th-place finish at the Beaver Lake FLW Tour last week, capitalized on some, but not all, of his opportunities today.

“I lost two that would’ve put me well over 30,” he said. “It’s not like I’m not getting the bites. It’s hooking them and then they came off.”

He had 8- to 10-pound class fish throw his frog and lost a 7-pounder as he tried to swing it over a dock. He said he ran more than 90 minutes to get to where he fished today and had to stop for gas to make the run back to the ramp.

“Where I’m fishing, there’s literally 40 pounds swimming around two times over,” he said. “They’re not on beds. They’re just swimming around so if I put them in the boat, it’s game over.”

With the weather expected to stay hot, he thinks it favors his frogging and flipping strategies, but he’s not getting too caught up in overanalyzing his decisions.

“I’m not really thinking too much about it,” he said. “I’m using the Andy Morgan philosophy – I just fish what’s in front of me. He doesn’t win a lot of tournaments, but he wins AOYs and is in the Top 10 consistently and is always catching good fish. I want to mix that with my killer instinct and I think I’ll be okay.”

79th: Crews Not Giving Up

> Day 1: 5, 11-13

Crews says the day-1 weights wound about where he expected them be. All except for his. He went to a couple places with high hopes, but left empty-handed and he spent the rest of the day scrambling.

“I wasted probably about 2 hours in a couple areas that I thought had good potential and thought I’d have to myself,” he said. “I did have them to myself, but that’s because there were no fish in there. If it would’ve been on (in those two places), it would’ve been real good. I’m not going to second-guess myself. I just have to make adjustments and go have a good day tomorrow.”

He thinks a 20-pound bag on Friday will get him inside the weekend cut when he’ll get another day on the water and another chance to catch a Delta giant.

“I weighed a 14-incher today,” he said. “If I replace that with a 4- or 5-pounder, I’d be in the mix. I don’t feel like I’m that far out of it.

“There’s a big wave on the verge of spawning now, I think,” he added. “Half or so are post-spawn because you’ll come into some areas and every 15 yards you’ll see these giant gobs of fry.”

Notable

> Day 1 stats – 112 anglers, 100 limits, 4 fours, 4 threes, 2 twos, 1 one, 1 zero.

> Brent Chapman incurred a 2-pound penalty for making a cast with six fish in his livewell. He wound up with 14-05 on day 1. David Smith was 7 minutes late and took a 7-pound penalty, which dropped his weight down to 2-05.

> Matt Herren encountered mechanical problems on his way back to the ramp this afternoon and did not weigh in. He figured he had 14 or 15 pounds in his livewell. He was still on the water being towed in at 6:15 p.m. PST.
