Dustin Connell is just 24 years old, but he made a decision during last week’s Alabama River Southern Open that would give most tournament veterans pause (and maybe some indigestion).

After having great success over the first day and a half of the event down river from takeoff, he made a call to head to a different pool midway through day 2. It was a gutsy, but necessary, decision after the water rose and muddied up in the area he’d worked over for more than 22 pounds on day 1.

He salvaged enough weight on day 2 to maintain the lead, then closed out the win on Saturday with a stout 18-06, tops among the 12 finalists, to finish with 55-01 and claim his first career Open victory.

“No doubt, it’s my biggest win ever,” he said. “It’s a real big deal to me. It’s just awesome. There’s no feeling like it. It’s just now starting to set in. I woke up (Sunday) morning and saw the trophy and thought, ‘Dang, I can’t believe this all happened.’”

The University of Alabama grad from Clanton, Ala., said he fishes the Coosa River system quite frequently and his experience there helped him decipher the changing conditions on the Alabama River. One variable that seems to help the fishing on both systems is current and with steady rainfall throughout the week, Connell put his experience in similar scenarios to good use.

“When they don’t run water, it’s a crap shoot,” he said. “It’s just hard to catch them. They’re not positioned to catch them good. Bottom line, you have to have water moving.”

Here’s how he capitalized on the conditions.

Practice

Connell said it’s been a pretty dry spring this year around Montgomery and he went into practice thinking the bite was going to be tough since there wasn’t much current to speak of.

Then the rains came and didn’t let up much through the tournament. He later joked that his rain suit was one of his most valuable tools of the week.

“It rained earlier in the week and pretty good on Thursday and all day long on Friday,” he said.

Typically, after a good rain Connell says the fish need two or three days to adjust to the current or rise in water level so he figured they’d be set up by the start of the tournament.

“At the beginning of the week, they ran water pretty decent,” he said. “They were running better water down river by Jones Bluff and I’d been running down there because knew I could catch them down there. That’s why I decided go to down river the first 2 days (of the tournament).”

While some were thinking the fish were spawned out, Connell tapped into some fish that hadn’t yet moved shallow.

“I figured out they were deep in like 12 to 15 feet,” he said. “A lot of guys were fishing shallower. I even caught some out to 20 feet. That’s what I tried to key on. I caught them on couple ledges as I got down river. That’s where I practiced and that’s where I stayed.

He pinpointed three spots that he wound up catching all of his tournament fish from – two down river from blast off and one up river.

“I just stayed on those because I knew big ones were there and I just grinded them out,” he added. “I don’t know what draws them there. It’s probably just the current and the hard bottom. It was mostly a rock and gravel bottom. I couldn’t catch them on sand bars.”

Competition

> Day 1: 5, 22-03
> Day 2: 5, 14-08
> Day 3: 5, 18-06
> Total = 15, 55-01

Connell felt pretty confident going into the tournament based on what he’d found in practice and the conditions were starting to play into hands. He just needed to execute.

“I put in a ton of time on these places and I knew it was a midday bite,” he said. “In practice, I couldn’t get a bite before 9 a.m., but after that we had more light and it just got the fish more active.”

To drive home the need to be patient, he scrawled “They Are There” on his hand.

“It was just a reminder to myself,” he added, “that I just had to get them to start biting.”

He sat on his spot in the Jones Bluff pool all day and endured a slow morning before putting 22-03 in the boat between 10 and noon.

“On a lot of those creek mouths, the current hits them and it washes up the bottom and you have a gravel bottom,” he said. “That’s where those fish want to move up on – just out in front of those gravel ledges. I could catch them on a crankbait there. They were just staging out there. They weren’t up shallow.”

He mixed in a jig and a swimbait along with the crankbait early on in the event.

“That fit right into my deal,” he said. “I love fishing that way. The conditions played into that.”

Additional rain Thursday night brought the water up and messed up the clarity at his day-1 spot, but he still spent the first half of his day there on day 2.

“I locked back up with six pounds at 12:30,” he said. “I had two spots where I knew I could catch some. They weren’t big ones, but decent 2 1/2- or 3-pounders.”

He stuck a pair of 3-pounders on the crankbait and added a couple more upgrades on a jig.

“I had to make something happen,” he said. “I knew I wasn’t going to catch a big bag, but I figured 12 to 14 pounds would give me a chance. I thought the guys were going to catch them better and I thought I would get passed.”

He wound up with 14-08 and took a 2 1/2-pound lead into the final day. That’s when he made the decision to abandon the area in Jones Bluff and instead head up river to where he finished day 2.

“It was crazy,” he said. “It was like, ‘Why am I running up river after catching what I caught the first two days?’

“I knew that I couldn’t win off of one place all three days. There weren’t that many fish on those places and they got a lot of pressure. I had more boats around me on day 2 and had fewer bites.”

The SPRO Fat Papa 70 was Connell's key offering on the first two days of the tournament.

He checked the generation schedule Saturday morning and determined they’d be generating enough current up river that the fish might be set up for him.

“I knew five or fix of the Top 12 were going to lock down so I took a left and went up river,” he said. “My first stop, they were there. I probably had 10 bites all day, but I caught four big ones on my first place. I grinded out one more good one later on.”

He caught his day-3 fish on a Strike King spinnerbait. All of his weigh fish were spotted bass.

“It wasn’t easy,” he added. “I was only getting seven to 10 bites every day. I had to stick with it.”

Winning Gear Notes

> Jig gear: 7’2” medium-heavy Shimano Cumara casting rod, Shimano Curado I casting reel, 20-pound Seaguar InvizX fluorocarbon line, 3/4-oz. homemade casting jig (black/blue), Missile Baits D-Bomb (brusier) trailer.

> When throwing the jig, he’d let the current carry it along the bottom. “I’d just drag it,” he said. “I caught several weigh fish just washing it down the current.”

> Crankbait gear: 7’11” Quantum Tour KVD cranking rod, Abu Garcia Revo Winch casting reel (5.4:1 ratio), 12-pound Seaguar InvizX fluorocarbon line, SPRO Fat Papa 70 (lavender shad).

> Spinnerbait gear: Same jig rod, same jig reel, same jig line, 3/4-oz. Strike King double willow spinnerbait (chartreuse white)

The Bottom Line

> Main factor in his success – "Current. They ran water for me and we got some rain. If they didn’t run current, I probably couldn’t have won.”

> Performance edge – "My Lowrance electronics. During practice, I used StructureScan and found some harder bottom and that’s how I found one of my key places. I caught them on that one little hard spot.”

Notable

> Connell did not clinch the automatic Bassmaster Classic berth that goes with winning an Open since he did not fish the first Southern Open at Lake Toho. He does, however, plan to fish the full slate of Southern Opens in 2016.

> The third and final Southern Open isn’t until Oct. 22-24 at Lake Seminole. It’s the final Open of the year and there will be plenty at stake – Elite Series invitation (top 5 in points get automatic invites) as well as a Classic berth to the winner. Here’s how the top 10 in points looks after two events:
