Mike Iaconelli is doing a superb job of adapting to the ever-changing conditions at the Lake Guntersville Bassmaster Elite Series.

The guy who coined the phrase "fish the moment" sacked 24-14 on day 2 to extend his lead at the midway point to more than 4 1/2 pounds with a 53-01 total. His two biggest fish came from places he didn't visit on day 1 and were enticed by baits that he hadn't thrown on Thursday.

"On paper it looks great, but it was actually a much tougher day," he said. "I caught somewhere in the neighborhood of 30 keepers yesterday, and today I caught nine. I felt like I had to work a lot harder today, but in saying that, I also made some key decisions and figured out some more things."

David Walker jumped from 12th to 2nd with a 25-05 stringer that gave him a 48-06 total. In 3rd was Australian rookie Carl Jocumsen, who sacked a day-best 26-10 to gain 24 places in the standings with a 46-08 aggregate.

Byron Velvick, who's finished 87th or lower in six of his last seven events, weighed a stellar 26-06 to catapult from 39th to 4th with 45-03. Brent Ehrler improved from 9th to 5th with his second straight 20-pound-plus bag, leaving him with a 43-13 total.

Here's how the Top 12 stacks up at the midway point, with red numbers in parentheses denoting deficit margins from the leader:

1. Mike Iaconelli: 53-01
2. David Walker: 48-06 (4-11)
3. Carl Jocumsen: 46-08 (6-09)
4. Byron Velvick: 45-03 (7-14)
5. Brent Ehrler: 43-13 (9-04)
6. Derek Remitz: 43-11 (9-06)
7. Brett Hite: 43-10 (9-07)
8. Keith Combs 43-06 (9-11)
9. John Crews: 42-12 (10-05)
10. Matt Lee: 42-08 (10-09)
11. Skeet Reese: 42-05 (10-12)
12. Dean Rojas: 42-04 (10-13)

As expected, the 113-angler field was greeted by a severe thunderstorm that pounded northern Alabama overnight and through a portion of the day on Friday. The launch was delayed by an hour to allow the worst of it to pass.

The conditions made things tough on the contenders who were sight-fishing. Kelly Jordon dropped from 2nd place to 15 with a four-fish, 15-09 bag and Bernie Schultz tumbled from 3rd to 19th with 15-01.

On the flip side, Brett Hite achieved a 47-place move in the right direction with a 26-08 haul and Alabama resident Derek Remitz caught 24 pounds to gain 22 spots.

The field was cut to the Top 53 following the weigh-in. Those falling below that mark included Guntersville Bassmaster Classic champion Randy Howell (63rd), perennial Angler of the Year (AOY) contender Aaron Martens (66th), Sabine River winner and Guntersville resident Chris Lane (81st) and reigning AOY Greg Hackney (96th).

Iaconelli caught his two biggest fish after making some bait changes during the middle of the day.

The forecast for Saturday calls for partly cloudy skies, a high temperature of 75 degrees and winds out of the north/northeast to 9 mph. The pleasant weather means the field will have company from a myriad of pleasure-craft enthusiasts as well as participants in numerous weekend derbies.

Only the Top 12 will advance to Sunday, when the winner will be determined by highest cumulative weight.

Ike Adapting Well

> Day 2: 5, 24-15 (10, 53-01)

Iaconelli, who won an Elite event at Guntersville 9 years ago, said he struggled during the initial part of the day, but then made some bait changes that resulted in a fish that was well over 7 pounds and another that topped 6.

"I've made some great decisions so far and today I made some key adjustments that helped me catch those big fish," he said. "I'm really excited about that, but at the same time I'm a little bit bothered because I had a tougher day when I thought it should get better because of the conditions."

He said he caught four pre-spawn fish and one post-spawner on day 1, but today the tally was 3 to 2 in favor of fish on their way back out from the beds. He's making that determination by the presence or lack of rubbing sores on the gill plates.

David Walker caught a 5-pounder on his first cast of the day.

"My saving grace is I've been trying to visualize how these fish are moving and that's taking me to banks that not a lot of dudes would fish," he said. "They just don't look good to the naked eye.

"I've got a few areas that I want to keep in my rotation, but outside of that tomorrow's another new day. That's the way I've got to look at it."

2nd: Walker was Wary

> Day 2: 5, 25-05 (10, 48-06)

Walker was a bit apprehensive when the day began, simply because he hadn't been able to string together 2 consecutive good days in practice. He immediately boxed a good fish, however, and that put him on his way to his fat sack.

"I got a 5-pounder on my first throw, and that's a heck of a way to kick off a day," he said. "Coming into the day after the good start yesterday, I wanted to make sure I didn't screw that up. I wanted to catch a good bunch and see where I ended up, and that first one was really key.

"I was afraid it might go like my practice did, from good to horrible, but that turned out not to be the case. I've made some good choices so far and I'm catching everything that bites."

He said the lake is fishing unusually large for Guntersville because there are so many ways to catch fish at the moment.

"Normally everybody's fighting over a few good spots, but right now we've got pre-spawners, spawners and post-spawners. Normally guys are uptight about possibly losing their spot to a local, but that's really not the case this week.

"I've got so much confidence in the few areas I'm fishing that I'm going to stick with them."

3rd: Jocumsen Went to School

> Day 2: 5, 26-10 (10, 46-08)

Jocumsen had put together a more-than-respectable 20-pound bag with a jig by midday and was on the hunt for places to fish over the weekend when a huge school of shad appeared all around his boat. He could tell by the behavior of the baitfish that they were being pursued from below, so he backed off and began throwing swimbaits into their midst.

It took him 20 minutes and two bait changes before he got his first bite. Once he hit on the right offering, he culled four times within a half-hour.

"It was great, but it kind of worries me a little bit because it could throw me off of what I've been doing," he said. "I know something like that is a total timing deal and I could waste a heap of time looking for it, so I'll have to be a little bit careful and be smart about how I go about tomorrow. I'll check it quickly and then get back to my other technique."

Carl Jocumsen made four culls in half an hour when he got into a pack of schoolers.

He thinks his dual HydroWave units might have been the reason for the emergence of the bait.

"I've got one on the transom and one on the trolling motor and I had both of them blaring. I hadn't seen any bait, but in that one area they just showed up."

4th: Combo Attack for Velvick

> Day 2: 5, 26-06 (10, 45-03)

Velvick said he's sight-fished for approximately half of each day and thrown swimbaits for the other half. He said he should've had a bigger bag on day 1, when he weighed a little less than 19 pounds, but farmed some key bites.

His biggest fish on day 2 was in excess of 6 1/2 pounds and he lost one that was bigger than 5.

"I don't know how many (bed-fish) I'll be able to find tomorrow, so it might be more of a throwing day," he said. "They're coming in to me, though – they're coming in for everybody.

"Today I fished a little deeper than yesterday and I put more of them in the boat, although that one that came off would've really helped. I'm just a little disappointed because I'm not where I should be (due to the missed bites), but fortunately there's still time to catch up."

87th: Major Tumble by Ledoux

> Day 2: 1, 5-12 (6, 29-15)

Kevin Ledoux, a second-year pro who's back on the circuit after a 2-year absence due to back surgery, caught his 25-pound bag on day 1 from around docks with a 7-inch Roman Made Negotiator swimbait. He thinks the lack of sun and wind on day 2 greatly hindered that action as he plummeted 81 positions in the standings.

"In my opinion, the sun and wind makes it all the better," he said. "I think it puts the fish higher in the water column under those docks and they'll chase it, and the wind helps with light refraction.

"Yesterday was a dream day – every big one I saw bit it. The weather finally got right at the end of the day today and I went to three docks and I had four big ones come out and look at it, and the biggest one bit its tail."

He had to pick up a flipping stick to get his only lockdown bite of the day. It was a good one (a 5 3/4-pounder), but that was small consolation.

"That's the way it is with a big swimbait – you're either a hero or a zero with it. I've only been playing with it for a few years and I don't have it dialed in real good."

Notable

> Day 2 stats – 113 anglers, 108 limits (1 more than day 1), 4 fours, 1 one.

> Brent Chapman's 107th-place finish was his lowest in a tour-level event since 2006. He's not exactly sure where he went wrong, but thinks he made a mistake by not looking for more fish on beds. To read his competition recap, click here to visit Pro View Reports.
