How hard is it to be consistent at Lake Chickamauga right now? Just ask the anglers who occupied the Top 3 spots after day 1.

Mike Iaconelli, Edwin Evers and Tommy Biffle, who all caught 24 pounds or more yesterday, all fell out of the Top 10 today after they were unable to approach their Wednesday production.

So far, just five competitors have managed to crack the 20-pound mark each day at Lake Chickamauga. That speaks to how difficult it likely will be to catch consistently strong bags this week at BASSFest. The potential is always there, but there are a number of factors at play this week that could easily see one of the leaders stumble on the weekend.

Jacob Wheeler doesn't seem to be having any issues so far as his tournament-best 29-13 stringer catapulted him from 7th place to the lead with a 52-03 total at the halfway point.

"I was so fortunate today to have the bites I had," Wheeler said. "It could happen to anybody. With the field that's behind me those are the last people you want behind you."

He's more than 6 1/2 pounds clear of Kevin VanDam, who caught 22-14 off a community hole to push his total to 45-07.

Greg Hackney, seeking his second win in as many weeks on the Tennessee River, caught a stout 24-08 and moved into 3rd with 44-13. Matt Herren moved up two slots to 4th with 43-14 while Takahiro Omori battled a stomach bug all day, but managed to stay in the Top 5 with a 20-02 stringer that gave him 43-01.

Here's a look at the Top 12 after 2 days of competition, with deficit margin from Wheeler indicated by red numbers in parentheses:

1. Jacob Wheeler: 52-03
2. Kevin VanDam: 45-07 (6-12)
3. Greg Hackney: 44-13 (7-06)
4. Matt Herren: 43-14 (8-05)
5. Takahiro Omori: 43-01 (9-02)
6. Jason Williamson: 38-13 (13-06)
7. David Smith: 38-05 (13-14)
8. John Crews: 38-05 (13-14)
9. Brett Hite: 38-01 (14-02)
10. Gerald Swindle: 38-00 (14-03)
11. Edwin Evers: 37-07 (14-12)
12. Boyd Duckett: 37-03 (15-00)

Several anglers made significant moves today to earn themselves a day of rest. Justin Lucas jumped 62 spots to 16th, thanks to a 25-05 stringer. Kelly Jordon also advanced 62 places to 43rd after catching 21-00, nearly triple his weight for three fish on day 1. Jeremy Starks worked his way into 44th, moving up 41 slots with 18-04 today.

Hank Cherry moved into 19th today with a 21-00 effort that included a 10-11 brute caught off a bed that is the biggest bass weighed in this season.

Aside from Wheeler, five other non-Elite Series anglers made the Top-50 cut and will get a day off from fishing tomorrow.

Mark Davis, the current leader in the race for Angler of the Year, and reigning AOY Aaron Martens both zeroed today and will be among the group of 90 anglers fishing at Lake Nickajack tomorrow. Marty Robinson rallied 60 spots with a 19-12 bag today that gave him 26-03 in 50th. Dean Rojas also has 26-03, but lost the heaviest 1-day stringer tiebreaker and will be boat No. 1 at Nickajack.

The lake saw some heavy rains at times today, but current remains the major factor in whether or not fish set up on certain ledges will be in a feeding mode. There has been a steady bite out of shallow grass, what little there is around the lake, but it's still expected to be a ledge-dominated event.

The Top 10 finishers from the 1-day derby at Nickajack will join the Top 50 back on Chickamauga – Nickajack weights do not carry over – on Saturday with the Top 12 advancing to Sunday's final round, when the winner will be determined by highest cumulative weight.

Wheeler Had to Adjust

> Day 2: 5, 29-13 (10, 52-03)

When Wheeler pulled up to his first spot, he discovered his front electronics were not functioning and it forced him to adjust his approach for the day.

Wheeler had some of his best areas to himself today.

"It was interesting," he said. "You can't get spun out by those types of things. When it happened, I said, 'OK, this is how I'll do it today.' I had to watch my rear electronics and then drop buoys on spots and fish that way."

It didn't hamper him one bit as he timed his arrival at certain areas just right and triggered some big fish into biting. His stringer was anchored by an 8-15 and another in the 7 1/2-pound range.

"I moved around a little more today," he said. "I pulled up on a pretty big community hole today and there was nobody there and I caught 'em good there. I got lucky to pull up on the right stuff at the right time. I had a good game plan in the morning and it couldn't have gone any better."

He's not certain how the day off will affect the fishing, but he's enjoying where he's sitting with 2 days to go.

"It shouldn't hurt anything," he said. "A lot of places might get local pressure. It just all depends. I wouldn't think it would hurt anything."

2nd: Grind So Far for VanDam

> Day 2: 5, 22-14 (10, 45-07)

While his 45-plus pounds through 2 days may look impressive on the leaderboard, VanDam said it's been far from easy. He's sharing water with Russ Lane and Jeff Kriet and he had three "good-sized fish" come off today that would've helped him significantly.

"This lake has got some big fish in it compared to other places," he said. "It's one of the toughest Tennessee River lakes to catch them on. It just doesn't have the numbers that Guntersville or Kentucky Lake has. I wish I could've caught more yesterday and had a better day today. It's just been a major grind."

On losing the three big ones, he said, "It's definitely disappointing. To lose one was one thing, but I lost three big ones. There's nothing I could've done different. That's the way it goes."

He said the lack of current today made it tougher to get a read on how the fish were setting up, but having Lane and Kriet nearby was helpful. Lane tallied 20-14 and Kriet had 18-00 today.

"There was one time during the day where all of us got them going and it worked out," he said. "We kept them fired up. It's harder sometimes when you're by yourself to keep them going when you're culling and that stuff."

He said having the spot to himself would be nice, but he's not about to shoo the other anglers away.

Kevin VanDam lost a few good ones today, but feels his area still has great potential.

"I've known them both for a long time and there are no issues or problems whatsoever," he said. "Everybody's trying to help everybody. We all started there and we've all been there. We know what's there. You just want to be the lucky one to the catch a big one. It also helps when one of those guys figures something out and says, 'Hey, try this color or try throwing this over here.' We worked really well together and I think we'll continue to work together there."

3rd: Hackney Caught a 6 Late

> Day 2: 5, 24-08 (10, 44-13)

The current flow that was cranking through the lake on day 1 allowed Hackney to get a read on some others that held fish and he took advantage of those today in recording his sixth straight 20-pound bag, dating back to the Pickwick Lake FLW Tour last week.

"The deal on day 1 was I wasn't getting many bites, but I had some good ones and today I started where I fished yesterday and caught a limit, including a couple good ones," he said. "Then I was able to expand on that area. They ran so much current yesterday that the fish were biting and I was able to hit a lot of spots and I found a bunch of places where I could catch one."

With the current scaled back today, he had to catch one here and there, but he had more than enough of those places. He caught one decent fish off of his best spot, but a late-day 6-pounder that ate a topwater helped him cull out a 3-pounder.

"Without a doubt, I probably would've still had about 20, but not 24 without that fish," he said. "I'm enjoying the way I'm fishing. The stuff I'm fishing sets up good for the way I like to fish.

"With the current, it's typical Tennessee River and we're getting late enough in the year that these fish are so current-oriented."

After a 35-keeper day on Wednesday, he brought 12 to 15 into the boat today.

"I had to fish a lot harder today and spent more time pounding on specific spots," he noted. "Today, they seemed to bite in spurts like they would on the moon phase."

4th: Herren Has Two Spots Working

> Day 2: 5, 21-07 (10, 43-14)

Herren says he still hasn't figured the lake out, but he's starting to get a feel for the two places that have produced for him so far.

"I'm just trying to maximize what's there," he said, adding he only caught seven keepers. "The two areas I'm fishing I'm getting quality bites. It's been a grind."

He's had those areas to himself and he believes that's going to be important moving forward in the event.

"I'm not on a big enough school (to share)," he said. "KVD, Kriet and Lane are all sitting on top of each other and apparently there's a big school there. On my spots, I'm going to move around and just fish. I learned a little more today as far as how they're positioned."

He said the current remains a key to triggering the fish into biting.

"My bite doesn't happen until they turn the water on," he said. "It seems like we need three or four turbines working to activate these fish. Today was the same as yesterday. I had my weight in about 45 minutes once the water came on.

"It seems like once you get that first bite it activates the school. If you're around quality fish, you can get the right bites in a hurry."

5th: Omori Hung in There

> Day 2: 5, 20-02 (10, 43-01)

Omori was still feeling lousy after weighing in another 20-pound stringer and said if he doesn't feel better in the morning, he'll head to an urgent care facility for further evaluation.

He fished a portion of the day lying down in his boat once he started to feel ill. He would cast his bait out and just drag it around. That technique didn't produce any bites.

"I had that one spot and just stayed there all day," he said. "I ended up catching six keepers all day. I'd catch two in 10 minutes, then go 2 hours without a bite, then catch two more in 10 minutes.

"I had to be ready whenever they showed back up."

43rd: 9-Pounder Boosts Jordon

> Day 2: 5, 21-00 (8, 28-04)

Jordon isn't a big fan of fishing in crowds on river ledges, so he opted to fish shallow grass today and it produced a 9-pounder that anchored his 21-pound stringer.

"I'm tickled to death," he said. "I had a lot more fun out there than I did yesterday.

"One thing about a lot of these TVA lakes that bothers me is that you're so at the mercy of when they decide to open the gates. I hate that. I'm from Texas and we don't have that there. They're either biting or they're not. You don't sit there waiting for the water to start moving. Guys (struggled) today waiting on the current. If it moves, you can get well quick. I know everybody is in the same ball game, but it just makes the windows when they bite a lot smaller."

He said he'd practiced on a lot of non-ledge areas of the lake and wishes he would've gone to the shallow stuff earlier on day 1. He caught every fish he weighed today out of water 10 feet deep or less.

Takahiro Omori battled a stomach bug today, but still managed to catch 20-02 and move into 5th place.

"There's a really strong non-ledge shallow bite going on," he said. "There's a lot of grass on this lake and today I ran some of the best stuff I'd found and caught them everywhere I went."

He'd been throwing a ChatterBait and a 10-inch worm on an area for about 10 minutes when the 8-14 inhaled his worm and took off.

"The thing about these fish is they are absolute horses when you hook one," he said. "I had 17-pound line and it was the end of a long cast with that worm when it bit. I was questioning for a while whether it was a bass. The thing swam 100 miles an hour and I had to keep up with it with my boat. This is the time of year when they're at their strongest. They're over the post-spawn hangover and the water's not hot so there's a lot of oxygen. This fish was just very strong."

He plans to continue to hunt around the shallows come the weekend in the hopes he can collide with another game-changer.

"It's awesome to be on a fishery where you can fish for a big bite and get dialed in to have an opportunity to get a game-changing bite like that," he said.

127th: Martens Missed 'Em

> Day 2: 0, 00-00 (5, 9-07)

Martens said every decision he made today turned out to be wrong. As a result, he'll be fishing against 89 other anglers tomorrow for a chance at 10 $10,000 checks.

"I just didn't catch them," he said. "Everything I did was one step behind or too early. My timing was off the whole time."

He had a dynamite start to practice, but things have fizzled out since then.

"I spent a lot of time on a spot that other guys did good on and I didn't catch anything there," he said. "I thought I could catch 17 or 18 a day, but it's such a timing deal. The fish are acting different than they did in practice. It's just a weird deal. It was my kind of bite, too, and my timing was just off."
