Mike Iaconelli had one. So did Edwin Evers. As a result, they sit 1-2 after day 1 of BASSFest at Lake Chickamauga.

What each veteran Elite Series angler experienced was a flurry of bites during the middle of the day, right about the time the Tennessee Valley Authority cranked up the current moving through the lake, and they both happened to be sitting on the right school of fish at the right place at the right time.

Iaconelli's flurry lasted nearly 90 minutes and saw him come away with 25-12 and the lead. If not for his burst of good fortune, Evers thinks he may have come in with a donut. He caught six keepers all day, the best five of which weighed 24-03.

Tommy Biffle is just 2 ounces behind Evers in 3rd with 24-01. Takahiro Omori, who's never been a fan of summertime fishing on the Tennessee River, caught 22-15, good enough for 4th, while Kevin VanDam caught 22-09 to round out the Top 5.

Here's a look at the Top 12 after 1 day of competition, with deficit margin from Iaconelli indicated by red numbers in parentheses:

1. Mike Iaconelli: 25-12
2. Edwin Evers: 24-03 (1-09)
3. Tommy Biffle: 24-01 (1-11)
4. Takahiro Omori: 22-15 (2-13)
5. Kevin VanDam: 22-09 (3-03)
6. Matt Herren: 22-07 (3-05)
7. Jacob Wheeler: 22-06 (3-06)
8. Jason Christie: 22-05 (3-07)
9. Davy Hite: 21-08 (4-04)
10. Jason Williamson: 21-03 (4-09)
11. Scott Rook: 20-10 (5-02)
12. David Smith: 20-06 (5-06)

While there were 14 bags of 20 pounds of more, many reported the fishing to be as tough or tougher than it was in practice. Only 75 of the 140-man field caught limits. Some of that may be due to a strategy to fish for only big bites since there are no Angler of the Year points at stake this week. Some of it may also be due to the fact that Chickamauga isn't known as a big numbers lake.

As expected, many of the community holes were covered up by multiple boats as anglers tried to figure out the right casting line on a spot or hoped to be there when school decided to feed. Some refused to fish that way and turned their attention elsewhere.

Clouds blanketed the area around the lake all day and the wind was steady throughout. While those may sound like ideal conditions for a crankbait bite, some anglers noted that a little bit of sunshine may help down the road. Rain is expected Thursday morning around Dayton, Tenn., with scattered thunderstorms in the area the rest of the day. Temperatures are expected to reach 80 degrees with a west wind at 5 to 10 mph.

No Changes Planned For Ike

> Day 1: 5, 25-12

Iaconelli wasn't quite sure what to expect today. He had a tough practice and determined the fish in the schools he'd found were just plain tough to catch.

"I came into the event with five bigger schools," he said. "They're not quite mega-schools, but my plan was to rotate through them until hopefully I had the timing right when they were feeding."

He fished four of them today, none by himself, and was able to get one group fired up for the better part of 2 hours in the late morning/early afternoon.

"On one place, it was a combination of three things," he said. "I think my timing was right and I figured out how to get one to bite and that ignited the school. That's such a big key here. The last thing was the line. I figured out the cast on this spot and that was real important. Even though other boats were there, they didn't have the line. When those three things happen at the right time, it's pretty amazing when they get fired up.

"If you take away that 90 minutes when the magic was happening, it was a pretty tough day."

While he did notice the current was moving pretty good by the time he headed back to the dock, he's convinced it wasn't a factor in his catching the fish he caught.

"I believe it was totally about getting one to bite and that ignited the school," he said. "It wasn't based on the current, clouds or anything."

He doesn't anticipate making wholesale changes to his strategy for tomorrow.

"My mindset this week is to fish to win," he said. "I'm going to stay deep and never go shallow. I'm going to stick with that program. I'm going to rotate through those four schools again and maybe add a fifth. I had 15 rods on my deck today and just because I figured out a couple key baits today that made them bite doesn't mean it won't be a couple different ones tomorrow. I'm definitely keeping an open mind."

He caught 20 keepers today, 16 of which came during "magic time," as he called it.

"It's amazing to see that many on the graph and to be setting around them for 2 hours and not be able to get them to bite," he added. "You throw every trick you know and have learned over the years about getting deep fish to bite."

Edwin Evers rode a late-day flurry to a 24-pound bag and 2nd place.

2nd: Evers Endured Brutal Day

> Day 1: 5, 24-03

Evers said the fishing today was "brutal hard," and without the flurry toward the end of the day that saved him, "I could've easily caught nothing."

The school that finally turned on for him was a school he'd already fished earlier in the day with no success.

"When they finally bit, I was there by myself," he said. "I fished a bunch in practice because a lot of the stuff I couldn't get bit on and I felt like I had to figure out how to get bites."

He's convinced the uptick in current flow this afternoon had something to do with his getting a flurry of bites.

"There are just a handful of places where you can get a bite and if you're not on one when they want to eat, you're going to get left out," he added.

3rd: Biffle Plans to Stay Deep

> Day 1: 5, 24-01

Biffle said the bite wasn't as good today as it had been in practice – and that's coming from the guy who caught an 8-06 today to anchor his stringer.

"I had some bigger bites today than what I had in practice, but I didn't think they bit as good today," he said.

He said he lost a 5-pounder toward the end of the day that would've helped him out by a couple of pounds.

He's committed to fishing deeper this week because of the tournament format and because he feels that's where the potential for the best stringers resides.

"With everybody getting 100 points, there's no reason not to fish to win," he said. "Normally I would've fished shallow, but that's why I'm fishing deep. Guys were making fun of me thinking I was trying to decoy them, but I think the bigger bags will be caught deep this week."

He didn't fish in a crowd like others did today, but he's around other boats. He finished his limit around 11:30, but only caught six keepers all day.

“Seemed like every time I caught one, it was a good one,” he said.

Tommy Biffle's big day was helped by an 8-06 brute.

4th: Omori Didn't Have to Share

> Day 1: 5, 22-15

Omori was more than happy to see his fortunes turn around on the Tennessee River today. It's never been kind to him, especially once the fish move out off the bank.

"Today was the best day I've had on the river for this time of year," he said. "I love to beat the bank. It's just my nature, but in this tournament with no points on the line, there's not much to lose so I forced myself to stay out deep the whole time."

He said his best spot was an area that he had to himself all day and he had to go through an assortment of deep-water baits (crankbaits, football jig, swimbait and spoon) to trigger strikes through the day.

"Today was just the first day so I hope the fish still show up," he said.

His stringer was anchored by a 5-plus pound largemouth, but he also weighed in a 4-15 smallmouth.

"That was a good bonus fish," he added. "Hopefully, I can do the same thing tomorrow. You never know. There might be a lot more fish out there than what I found. I just need to stay in that area and see what happens."

6th: Big Finish for Herren

> Day 1: 5, 22-07

Matt Herren thinks the increase in current this afternoon played a big factor in the weights coming up to where they are.

"I was really surprised by the day," he said. "It's been a grind all week. After I looked at the generation schedule, they were moving a lot more current than they have all week and I think that helped the bite a lot. I'd look for the fish to continue to feed if we get current like that.

"If they stop the current, who knows. It' hasn't been easy, but it's not hard to get a good bag going if they feed a little."

He said he caught a limit by 9:30 this morning, then had a lull until 11 or so. Then he hit a 2-hour flurry before another lull. On his last cast of the day, he caught a 6 1/2-pounder that helped him pick up 3 pounds.

"I just had little spurts during the day," he added. "I'm fishing shallow and deep. I had some areas where I had some company and also some of my key areas I didn't see another boat."

7th: Wheeler Changed His Approach

> Day 1: 5, 22-06

Jacob Wheeler finished 92nd at the FLW Tour event at Chickamauga last June so he was bent on changing up his approach this time.

"This practice, I spent more time trying to find off-the-wall stuff and stuff that isn't getting pressured," he said. "It was pretty slow all over today, but I had one place where I thought I could catch a limit and thought it would settle me down."

It wound up kicking out a 10-pound limit for him and allowed him to go to other stuff others may have overlooked.

"I ran around and didn't get many bites at all," he said. "I went to one off-the-wall place and caught a 6 and a 4 and then left. That got me to about 18 pounds, but I still had a couple little ones I wanted to get rid of."

He eventually went back to where he'd caught the two good ones earlier and caught another 4 that helped him cull.

"One thing about today was we had a lot more current and a lot more wind and the wind blew against the current all day," he said. "That made it tough to fish certain places and make certain casts. The amount of current we was a lot for Chickamauga and I think it really set some fish up on some places good and I think it also hurt some places."

49th: Cherry's Best Stuff Got Muddy

> Day 1: 5, 13-13

Hank Cherry's best areas in practice were blown out by the wind, so he went to a back-up plan and put himself in the hunt to make the Top 50.

"I had two little bars where they were sitting and the wind must've just pounded on them all night because the water got dirty," he said. "I didn't fish anything I had planned on fishing."

He opted to stay away from the community holes, most of which were covered up by six or seven boats at a time.

"I'm not going out there," he said. "I had a big day doing what I'm doing yesterday. I am fishing off shore, but I'm not that deep. If I can duplicate what I did Tuesday, I'll be back up there near the top."

He said he lost a 5-pounder on a swimbait later in the day.

"It's all timing here," he said. "If you get lucky and hit it right we'll catch them. If the water's clear, I have plenty of stuff to fish. If not, I'll have to run further down the lake."
