Hackney Catches 18-01 To Move Into Lead

As expected, Lake Dardanelle threw a different look at the Bassmaster Elite Series field today. As a result, the fishing was much different – and in most cases it was much tougher.

A 2-hour fog delay in the morning shortened everyone's day on the water, but it didn't stop Greg Hackney from leaping over John Crews to take the lead at the halfway point. Hackney, who grew up in Arkansas and fished Dardanelle on a weekly basis when he was younger, caught 18-01 to push his total to 39-14.

Crews fell a good bit short of matching his 22 1/2-pound day-1 haul, but his 16-12 effort has him just 9 ounces back of Hackney with 39-05. The biggest mover of the day was Zell Rowland, who hammered a tournament-best 25-05 to advance a whopping 84 spots to 3rd with 37-01.

Keith Combs hung on to 4th with 36-08 behind a 16-10 bag while Rick Clunn jumped six places to 5th with 36-03 after catching 17-14.

After day 1 saw 102 of the 107 pros catch limits, that number plummeted to 76 today.

Rowland wasn't the only pro who made a sizable move up the leaderboard. Cliff Crochet came from 70th to 8th with a 19-15 effort today while Mike Iaconelli, mired in a miserable slump this season, jumped to 16th from 80th with an 18-05 bag. Ott DeFoe made a 65-spot move to 17th with an 18-04 bag.

For every rally, it seemed there were just as many or more anglers struggling to match their day-1 production. Andy Montgomery, who was 7th after day 1, slipped out of the money and wound up 65th after bagging just 5-09 today. James Niggemeyer caught 19-00 on day 1, but managed just one fish for 3-02 today and slid from 8th to 88th. Grant Goldbeck, one of three anglers to sack 20 pounds on Thursday, came in with four fish for 7-14 and slipped from 3rd to 34th.

The race for Angler of the Year will have a whole new look after this weekend as the top four contenders in points coming into Dardanelle – Mark Davis, Jared Lintner, Todd Faircloth and Jacob Powroznik – all finished in the 70s or 80s, opening the door for others to make up valuable ground.

Davis saw his 42-point cushion evaporate as Hackney's great start this week pushed him one point ahead of Davis in the AOY chase. Only three of the Top 10 anglers entering the event managed to make the cut.

The fog delay had some pros spinning their wheels this morning and a dropping water level seemed to turn the bite off around some shallow cover. The key throughout the remainder of the tournament will be who can make the right adjustments at the right time on a riverine reservoir that seems to be in a state of flux.

Some morning rain is expected Saturday before cloudy skies take over in the afternoon. Winds will be light and variable and the high is supposed to be in the mid-60s.

The Top 12 after Saturday will advance to Sunday, when the winner will be determined by highest cumulative weight.

Different Area Produced for Hackney

> Day 2: 5, 18-01 (10, 39-14)

Hackney noticed his quantity of bites on day 1 wasn't what it had been during practice so he committed to starting in a different spot today, fishing a totally different technique. The adjustment paid off as he caught about 20 keepers throughout the day, including a couple 4-pounders to highlight his stringer.

"I didn't catch them early on Thursday so I revamped what I was doing and did something totally different and started catching them," he said. "I caught them that way for about half the day and then went back to where I'd caught them on day 1 and caught them there.

"I was in a different area of the lake and I had every intention of going back to the stuff I fished on day 1, but I just couldn't leave them when they were biting."

The cooler weather seems to have caught up with the lake as he noticed the water temperature in one area had dropped 13 degrees since he stopped there Tuesday during practice.

"Five degrees can be a shock to the fish," he said, "but 13 degrees in the middle of May? That's crazy. Yesterday, when we were coming off the water, it felt like all of a sudden we were getting another cold front. The wind was blowing 30. This weather's just been crazy."

He's feeling pretty confident heading into the weekend that he can generate bites fishing one of the two techniques he's used so far.

"I feel pretty sure I left some fish in that area (he fished last today)," he said. "I had planned to spend about 2 1/2 hrs in there today, but I was getting bit elsewhere. You don't know how many fish are left in these areas. There are so many variables. I'm real comfortable with how I'm fishing either way and I feel good about catching fish. I just have to hope some are the right ones."

2nd: Crews Cruising Around

> Day 2: 5, 16-12 (10, 39-05)

Crews continued to pick off keepers while bouncing around the lake today. He said the water dropping a bit made the fishing in some areas better and worse in others.

"You could see some of the guys who benefitted from it dropping," he said. "I'm just trying to keep tabs on what the fish are doing because the water's been coming up and down. It's still hard. I don't have a ton of experience so it's hard to stay on top of them."

He plucked a pair of 2-pounders off his first stop, then made a move and put two 4 1/2-pounders in the boat.

"I thought it was on now after that," he said.

Another 2-pounder was followed by a 2-hour lull that left him scratching his head. He caught fish here and there the rest of the day, adding a minor upgrade later on.

"I didn't have opportunities at any more good ones," he said. "One area that I'd planned on fishing had a couple of boats on it and that happened to me a couple of times, but I'm not married to any spot or areas so when that happens I just go somewhere else."

4th: Combs Dealt With Less Current

Combs said the lack of current today contributed to the tougher bite.

"I caught maybe a third of the fish I caught yesterday," he said. "Yesterday was really, really good and today there were more people fishing the way I fished on day 1, at least on my first five or six spots. There was no current flowing today and I think that's what changed things up."

He's going to continue to hit the same areas, hoping the water starts moving again.

"I still think I can catch them," he said. "They'll still feed even without the current. You just have to time it perfect. It should be easier to move around tomorrow."

5th: Premium Bites Key for Clunn

> Day 2: 5, 17-14 (10, 36-03)

Clunn said he had one of the best practices he's had in a long time this week and the knowledge he picked up during those 3 days seems to be holding true so far as he's averaged about 18 pounds so far.

"I figured out what the big fish are doing and I think I'm putting more casts into them than most people are," he said. "I'm not getting a lot of bites, but when I do get one, it's usually a good one."

He said with the water clarity being what it is, a lot of fish that would normally be headed to their post-spawn summer haunts offshore seemed to have taken a detour.

"They're not there yet," he noted. "It seems like they've found some of that in-between stuff around the areas they would stage on before the spawn. It's just subtle offshore stuff."

Despite a shorter day, he said he had roughly the same number of bites as on day 1. A couple keepers right away put him back on his one-bite-per-hour clip.

"I know if I can get eight bites a day, four or five will be good ones," he said. "I caught two right away and that got me back on schedule and helped me mentally."

6th: Poche Hung In There

> Day 2: 5, 15-08 (10, 35-01)

Keith Poche held onto the 6th spot in the standings despite a slow morning that saw him go until 11 a.m. before he landed his first keeper – a 12-inch spotted bass.

"I missed a lot of fish first thing," he said. "I had opportunities to gain some ground and I got a lot more bites today, but the fish were biting funny. They weren't getting the whole bait or something. I don't know what was going on."

He did most of his damage in the afternoon on day 1, but today he totaled just six keeper fish.

"There was a point today where I felt like I was about to lose my cool and thought I was losing my chance to stay in this thing," he said. "So I took a minute, sat down in my boat, retied everything, ate a Pop-Tart and got back at it."

He's not planning any drastic adjustments to how or where he's fishing for tomorrow.

"I'll just go out and do the same thing and run the same stuff," he said. "I think I might start somewhere different because I'm not getting bit first thing in the morning. It takes them about an hour to get going. With us starting later today, I was already into my mid-day bite when we got out there.

"The fish are there and I'm getting bit. I just have to stay with it and stay confident and hope I get the right bites. Hopefully, I can pull a Zell tomorrow."

7th: Good Morning for Howell

Randy Howell didn't get near the number of bites that he did on day 1, but made up for it with two 4-pounders shortly after putting his trolling motor in the water.

"That really helped me a lot, especially with getting a late start," he said.

He caught a couple 3-pounders and had a decent limit to start with.

"It slowed down after that," he added. "I figured it would be tougher for everybody the way the lake looked after the fog lifted. It really slicked off.

"I fished some of the same water and a good bit of new water. Some of the water I fished both days got beat up so bad on day 1 and there were more boats today running over it so I decided to run up the lake a little ways. I didn't catch a whole lot, but I caught another 4 and a 3-plus that helped me cull."

He's been junk-fishing mostly and caught keepers on a variety of crankbaits and jigs today.

81st: Davis Bumming

> Day 2: 4, 9-09 (9, 23-06)

Davis came into the tournament thinking the fish would be set up in their post-spawn habitat offshore. After the rainy and cold conditions of practice and the first half of the tournament, it turns out he was mistaken.

"Local knowledge hurt me this week," he said. "I expected the fish to do what they normally do after they spawn. The fish were basically on the banks and guys were catching them flipping and throwing buzzbaits. I tried to make it into a structure tournament and it wasn't."

He said he had some decent success offshore in practice, but didn't anticipate the shallow bite being as strong as it's been.

"It's totally my fault. I started off on the wrong foot and never corrected it," he added. "This lake is notorious for changing and tripping you up. I had some opportunities today that I didn't capitalize on that would've made a big difference in the points and hopefully would've helped me make the Saturday cut. That was the main goal."

After being on such a roll through the first half of the season, he says he can catch his breath and regroup now for the final three events.

"It's a little bit of a reality check – I can still make mistakes," he said. "Greg's going to have to win the tournament to be in the (AOY) lead, but that really doesn't matter now. As long as you're in the hunt at the end, that's all that counts. I'm disappointed I wasn't able to maintain that lead I had."
