A lot of anglers who caught quality bags on day 1 of the Beaver Lake FLW Tour were worried they couldn't do it again on day 2 if the wind died down. For some, that proved to be a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Spencer Shuffield was not among the worry warts, and it turned out he had no reason to be.

The second-generation pro took over the lead in his home state with a 13-11 bag that pushed his 2-day total to 29-00. He'll enter the weekend with an advantage of just over a pound as he seeks his first tour-level triumph.

There are some big sticks right on his tail, however, and perhaps the biggest of all is his closest pursuer. Andy Morgan, the defending Angler of the Year (AOY) who sits at No. 1 in the BassFan World Rankings, boxed a day-best 15-04 to climb 19 spots to 2nd with 27-15.

Matt Arey weighed a stout 14-06 to jump from 18th to 3rd with 27-06. He was followed by Troy Morrow, whose 12-07 sack gave him a 26-10 aggregate.

Micah Frazier rounded out theTop 5 with a 12-02 stringer for a 26-05 total.

Here's how the Top 10 shapes up at the midway point, with red numbers in parentheses indicating deficit margin from the leader:

1. Spencer Shuffield: 29-00
2. Andy Morgan: 27-15 (1-01)
3. Matt Arey: 27-06 (1-10)
4. Troy Morrow: 26-10 (2-06)
5. Micah Frazier: 26-05 (2-11)
6. Cody Meyer: 26-01 (2-15)
7. Casey Ashley: 25-13 (3-03)
8. Bryan Thrift: 25-12 (3-04)
9. David Dudley: 25-10 (3-06)
10. Mark Rose: 24-14 (4-02)

Beaver's bigger fish are rarely cooperative on calm days such as today, and that was reflected in the overall weights. The Top 60 in the standings after day 1 all had at least 10 1/2 pounds, but it took just an 18-11 total to secure that slot (which comes with the final $10,000 check) today.

If forecasts are accurate, the wind will return with a vengeance over the next 2 days. It's expected to blow at 20 mph out of the south on day 3, and perhaps even harder on the final day, when thunderstorms are anticipated.

Morgan, Arey and three-time AOY Dudley made the most significant jumps among the current Top 10. The most precipitous fall was experienced by veteran Gary Yamamoto, who was 7th after day 1 but weighed just two fish for 3-02 today and dropped to 70th.

As usual, Andy Morgan has employed several different baits en route to a spot in the weekend field.

Meyer and Morgan will continue their duel for the AOY lead over the weekend. They were separated by just a single point coming in and each has missed just one 20-cut so far, with no finish lower than 27th between them.

The field will be reduced to the Top 10 following the day-3 weigh-in, with the winner determined Sunday based on highest 4-day weight.

Shuffield Caught 'Em Quickly

> Day 2: 5, 13-11 (10, 29-00)

Shuffield had the majority of his weight by 9:30 and then made a key cull in the final 30 minutes. He weighed a 4-pound largemouth and four solid spotted bass.

His confidence is high headed to the weekend, particularly with the wind set to return.

"I just don't think many people are fishing the way I am," he said. "I've got a lot of confidence in the places I'm fishing and I've got a lot of water I haven't touched yet.

"I'm on a pattern where I can pull into a creek and (identify) the 100- or 200-yard stretches where I'm going to catch them, and I might go down that stretch and catch four or five or six."

He handled about 10 keepers and didn't lose any. He said numerous 3-pounders followed his bait to the boat, but wouldn't commit. He believes those fish will bite when the wind comes back.

"I only spent about 3 1/2 hours today doing my main deal, then I looked for other stuff and never made it happen. If the wind blows tomorrow, I'll feel real good about it and if the thunderstorms (in Sunday's forecast) come in, that'll be good, too."

2nd: Morgan on the Move

> Day 2: 5, 15-04 (10, 27-15)

Morgan said he got "lucky" to catch such a strong sack today. Somehow, fortune seems to smile upon him more often than just about anybody, considering this is the 10th 20-cut he's made in the past 12 Tour events.

"I moved around a lot more today – it was one of those deals where you just had to cover a lot of ground until you ran into one," he said. "That's just Beaver Lake."

He weighed two smallmouths, a spot and two largemouths, and three of those weighed at least 3 1/2 pounds apiece. To this point, he's caught fish on a jig, a shaky-head, a spinnerbait, a jerkbait and a crankbait.

"It's spread out – I catch one about every hour. I haven't lost a fish in 2 days and I know it's coming, and I just hope I don't lose the wrong one. I've had a couple get into cedar trees and some gnarled-up places and it's a wonder I got them out."

He thinks he can win if he averages 13 to 14 pounds over the next 2 days.

"The wind's going to make it better for everybody, for sure, and somebody could really help themselves with a 16- or 17-pound bag."

3rd: Arey Taking it Slow

> Day 2: 5, 14-06 (10, 27-06)

Arey has pulled away from his best stuff at mid-morning both days because of how scarce quality bites can be at Beaver.

"I'm running a pre-spawn pattern and fishing slow and methodical," he said. "I'm trying to run the 'Beaver Marathon,' which is 13 pounds a day. If I can get 13 or 14 tomorrow, I'll quit again.

"I believe the guy who can do that for 4 days is going to walk away with the win. If that's not the case, then so be it, but I'm gambling on that."

He took five largemouths to the scale today, including a 4-pounder. He's boated about eight keepers each day.

Most of Matt Arey's bites have been of better-than-average quality.

"I'm not catching a ton of fish, but the bites I'm getting are better quality. They're about 75 percent keepers – either largemouths or chunky spots. A 2 1/2-pounder here is like gold and I didn't want to keep burning through them when I might need them later.

"I've had no company and I haven't seen anybody else doing what I'm doing, and that's comforting. I've caught most of my weight both days doing the same thing in the same places. They're definitely all new fish – just solid white.

"I'm in transition areas right on the way to spawning pockets and I've got them coming to me," he continued. "I'd imagine by Sunday there'll be some spawning."

5th: Frazier was Fortunate

> Day 2: 5, 12-02 (10, 26-05)

Frazier advanced to the weekend for the first time since his runner-up showing at Hartwell in 2012. He'd been riding a streak of four finishes of 102nd or lower dating back to last year.

"I'm definitely running a pattern, but it's completely reliant on the wind," he said. "I got lucky today and got a big smallie to bite. Yesterday I had all smallies, but today they wouldn't bite and I had to resort to catching spots.

"If the wind blows again tomorrow, that'd be awesome. When that happens, everything bites better down on the lower end."

He's throwing moving baits in extremely clear water. He went through about 10 keepers, the best of which was the 3 1/2-pound smallmouth.

"I've had a little bit of company, but not a lot, and I think I'm the only one who's done fair fishing that water. I don't know if I've got a bait that they like or what."

169th: Wind Direction Sank Cotten

> Day 2: 3, 5-00 (3, 5-00)

Alabama's Rick Cotten was a Top-10 finisher in the previous event at Sam Rayburn Reservoir, but he barely stayed out of the bottom 10 at this one.

"I had a great practice this time, whereas my practice at Rayburn wasn't all that good," he said. "The wind on the 3 days we practiced here was from the other direction and I fished a lot of banks that would be very wind-blown if that hard south wind came.

"I just couldn't stay on my spots yesterday and I did a lot of running around and it didn't work out, so today I stayed close to the ramp and tried to grind out a limit in the stained water."

He'd prepare differently if he had it to do over again.

"I'd practice both sides of the lake and I'd stay in the clean water. The bigger bites are near the dam in the clear water."

Notable

> Day 2 stats – 173 anglers, 103 limits (12 fewer than day 1), 17 fours, 30 threes, 10 twos, 5 ones, 8 zeroes (six more than day 1).

> Jay Yelas and Luke Clausen both finished in the money, but neither was happy with his performance. Yelas staged a big rally on day 2 to salvage a check (47th place) while Clausen weighed two mediocre bags en route to finishing 60th. To read their Pro View Reports, click here.
