Great Lakes smallmouth. Florida-strain largemouth. Ozarks spots, smallies and largemouths. It doesn't seem to matter where he is or what he's fishing for – Mark Davis is catching everything these days.

The three-time B.A.S.S. Angler of the Year who's coming off consecutive 3rd-place finishes to open the season is now zeroed in on his first career Elite Series victory after taking over the lead at Table Rock Lake today behind a 15-03 stringer that gave him 33-11 at the halfway mark.

Even though he's fishing his favorite of all of the Ozark lakes and getting plenty of bites so far, Davis has very little room for error as Chris Lane, who's never been a threat in this neck of the woods, is just 10 ounces back following a 14-12 effort that has him at 33-01.

An ounce behind Lane is Aaron Martens, the reigning AOY and day-1 leader. He caught 14-05 today and is 3rd with 33-00.

It's pretty tight from there back as well. Mike McClelland, another Table Rock lover, stroked 16-14 today and has 32-04 in 4th place. Edwin Evers put 13-09 on the scale and holds down the 5th spot with 30-13.

A margin of 4-11 separates Davis from 12th-place Cliff Prince, who caught a day-best 19-10 and it's 9 pounds even from the top spot to 50th where Yusuke Miyazaki is.

Here's a look at the Top 12 at the halfway mark, with the deficit margin from Davis indicated by red numbers in parentheses:

1. Mark Davis: 33-11
2. Chris Lane: 33-01 (00-10)
3. Aaron Martens: 33-00 (00-11)
4. Mike McClelland: 32-04 (1-07)
5. Edwin Evers: 30-13 (2-14)
6. Greg Hackney: 30-10 (3-01)
7. Brandon Palaniuk: 30-07 (3-04)
8. Jared Lintner: 30-05 (3-06)
9. Tim Horton: 29-13 (3-14)
10. Britt Myers: 29-08 (4-03)
11. Paul Elias: 29-07 (4-04)
12. Cliff Prince: 29-00 (4-11)

Prince made the biggest move today, coming from 97th to 12th behind his 19-10 effort while Tim Horton (58th to 9th) and Ott DeFoe (67th to 17th) also surged up the standings.

Jamie Horton and Jared Miller both slipped out of the money after being inside the Top 10 following day 1. Horton had three fish for 5-07 and fell from a tie for 4th to 72nd. Miller was a fish light today with 8-06 for a 2-day total of 24-06 that left him 55th, 5 ounces out of the money.

The noticeable change in the weather today was the strong wind that blew from the northwest and cooler temperatures that will hang around through Saturday at least. Friday's overnight low is expected to reach the mid 30s with Saturday's high in the low 60s. What will have everyone's attention in the morning and possibly alter some pros' strategies will be the lack of wind as it's only supposed to blow 5 to 10 mph out of the east.

The field will be trimmed to the Top 12 after tomorrow's round and the winner will be crowned Sunday based on highest cumulative weight.

Davis Caught Plenty

> Day 2: 5, 15-03 (10, 33-11)

Davis said the only noticeable difference between the first 2 days was he came in without a 7-pounder today. His bag today contained four largemouth and one spotted bass.

"I caught about the same number of fish with 25 to 30 keepers, maybe more," he said. "I had 60 or 70 bites total. It's just a matter of getting bit by the bigger fish. A 7 is hard to come by every day, but it was about what I expected it to be."

Chris Lane isn't catching many keepers, but he's catching the right ones.

He said he fished some of the same water, but spent the majority of his day in new areas.

"I have about a 10-mile section I've committed to," he said. "The fish are all over this lake and you might be doing just as well in another 10-mile stretch, but I felt like I needed to pick an area and stay in it and get familiar with it."

He mentioned the fish seemed to be positioned a little deeper today, likely a result of the water temperature dropping several degrees.

"The fish were just starting to come up and I expected them to drop back," he said. "Tomorrow should be harder. It'll probably be the toughest day yet."

Davis declined to divulge much in terms of how he's been catching his fish.

"I think it's the technique I'm using, but it's mostly the lure," he said. "It's probably something that's a little different. I'm fairly certain it's something these fish haven't seen before."

2nd: Stain's Been Key for Lane

> Day 2: 5, 14-12 (10, 33-01)

Lane's track record in the Ozarks before this week was miserable. In three previous Elite Series trips to reservoirs along the White River, his best outcome was a 78th at Bull Shoals Lake 2 years ago.

He's far exceeded his expectations this week as he continues his quest for a second straight victory.

"It really does mean a lot," he said, referring to shrugging the Ozarks monkey off his back.

He reeled in eight keepers today and is trying to stick to areas with stained water.

"They didn't hit the spinnerbait that good today so I stuck with the crankbait and jig," he said. "I'm not running all that far. I'm just fishing down the bank and everything looks the same to me. I just keep going and going and I'll catch one."

He knows the fishing conditions may stiffen tomorrow, but he's not ready to scrap what's been working.

"I have no idea what to expect, but I'm going to leave my red crankbait tied on and throw it in the depths I've been throwing it and when I come to some wood or a tree I'll pick up a jig," he said. "It's one of those deals where I'm just fishing along."

3rd: No Largemouths for Martens

> Day 2: 5, 14-05 (10, 33-00)

Martens was bummed he slipped out of the lead, but being just 11 ounces back after 2 days he knows he's still within striking distance of the top spot.

"I kept myself in it today," he said. "I'm still right there and it's only half over. To win this tournament, I know there are fish all over the place, but you have to be fortunate and good at the same time."

His limit came a little later today than it had on Thursday and he had a tough time finding keeper-sized largemouths. After weight all green fish Thursday, he brought in two smallmouths and three spots today.

"It was a grind to get five today," he said. "The conditions were a little tougher. The wind shifted. It's just really hard to get a big fish. I think I had a 3- and 4-pounder today. You have to have a good one here."

He said he was going to redo some tackle tonight in anticipation of shifting conditions on Saturday.

"The conditions are going to get tougher," he said. "Who knows, I might be able to find something like a school where they're piled up. I went looking for that today, but didn't find it."

Aaron Martens slipped two spots in the standings, but feels confident he can stay in contention for the win.

A day after catching 20 keepers, he boated eight today.

"I don't know where I'm going tomorrow, but that's how you win here," he added. "You just need to be fortunate enough to make the right decision. It's gamble here."

4th: McClelland Locked In

> Day 2: 5, 16-14 (10, 32-04)

McClelland's confidence is soaring after 2 days of being able to run around a lake he knows well and fish it a way he enjoys fishing.

"It's good to be on a lake I have some history on and it's setting up this year perfect and like I'd hoped it would," he said. "It's no secret I'm throwing the SPRO McStick in all three sizes, but the 115 and 110 have definitely been strong this week.

"I'll pick up a crankbait and throw it between stickbait spots, but that's really all I'm doing."

He's had success at one particular area in the morning both days, but after that it's been all new water each day.

"I haven't been back to a lot of places from practice," he added. "Once I figured out what they want to be on, I'll run around and start fishing new water. I hope that will be a key because it changes each day. Other than one stretch, I haven't duplicated anything through 2 days."

He had his limit by 8 a.m. today and fished clean all day. He's weighed in all largemouth so far.

"I think the guy that wins will have all largemouth," he said. "I've carried some spots and smallmouth around, but I've been able to get rid of them."

The wind had been a big factor for him so far, so he's curious to see what tomorrow holds as far as conditions.

"The biggest thing will be the wind," he said. "If it doesn't blow, I'll have to drop back and punt. I think I can catch a few early and if I can get a good bite or two early I could be alright. If not, then I'll have to rely on smallmouth and spots to get by, but it's been hard to come by 3-pound spots smallies."

5th: Evers Expects Tomorrow to be Tougher

> Day 2: 5, 13-09 (10, 30-13)

Evers senses there are more fish moving in toward the spawning flats, but today he wasn't able to intercept anything in the 4-pound class like he did on Thursday.

"I caught a lot of fish today. It's crazy how many I caught," he said. "It's just been really hard to get a bigger bite. I had a few better fish on today that I didn't land. I think my best one today was close to 3 1/2."

He thought the windier conditions would've prompted the bigger fish to be in more active feeding mood.

"The wind blew out of a different direction and it was actually more windy which is why I'm shocked I didn't catch them better," he said. "Tomorrow will be a complete different day with post-front conditions. It'll probably be much tougher. I think I can make the adjustments and catch them."

He wound up weighing three spots and two largemouth today.

"The thing I'm not finding this year that I've seen in the past are the real big spots and big smallmouths," he noted. "I'm just not seeing those. I'm not sure what happened to them. You used to be able to catch 3 1/2-pound spots at will. I'm not sure where they're at. We're still catching them, just not the big ones."

12th: New Area Paid Off for Prince

> Day 2: 5, 19-10 (10, 29-00)

It's been the tale of two rivers so far for Prince.

"Yesterday, I went up one river and threw a crankbait all day and caught a lot of fish, just not the right size," he said. "In practice, I'd caught them in another river so I went up there today and changed the whole ball game."

Justin Lucas will miss out on making his third straight 12-cut after finishing 68th.

He threw a jerkbait today and things fell into place as the windy conditions seemed to benefit him.

"I was in a little cleaner water," he said. "I did catch a few on a crankbait, but it wasn't happening today."

He went through 15 keepers in all today and his bag was highlighted by a 6-pounder and a pair of 4s.

"I was really hoping for one more really good bite, but I was glad to have what I had," he said. "I was one bite away from really having an exceptional day.

"I'll be tickled with another 15 pounds tomorrow. I haven't had a bite like that (6) all week. I've been catching keepers, but no 4-pounders even. It's easy to catch 15-inchers here, but it's been hard catching a 6 or even a 4. Those make all the difference in the world."

68th: Lucas Dumbfounded

> Day 2: 5, 9-15 (10, 22-14)

Justin Lucas came into this event 3rd in the AOY standings and leading the competitive Rookie of the Year race. His 68th-place finish knocked him out of the top 10 in points and down to 3rd among rookies.

He pointed to his lack of effectiveness with a crankbait in this region of the country as the reason for his regression.

"I don't understand the whole cranking deal on these lakes," he said. "I felt like being from California I'd understand them more than a place like (Lake) Seminole, but I actually think I feel more comfortable there than up here.

"I had a hard time finding the banks these guys crank the Wiggle Warts on. I guess I don't understand how it needs to set up."

He started his day with two keepers in the first 10 minutes, which got his hopes up that he was in for a good follow up effort after catching 12-15 Thursday.

"I didn't catch another keeper until 2 o'clock," he said. "It made for a really long day. I don't know if my timing was off compared to yesterday or what it was."
