Mark Rose has one massive bite to thank or his position atop the leaderboard at the Sam Rayburn Reservoir FLW Tour.

The veteran from Arkansas caught a 9-pounder to anchor a 19-02 stringer, giving him a 2-day total of 43-00. Without that fish, he'd be down in the middle portion of the tightly packed Top 10.

He holds a 1 1/2-pound lead over Jason Meninger, who boxed a day-best 24-02 as the weather as did a complete turnaround from stormy day 1. He has a 41-07 aggregate.

Steve Kennedy weighed a fish just 2 ounces lighter than Rose's brute and moved up two places to 3rd. His 21-12 stringer gave him a 40-10 total.

Perennial Angler of the Year (AOY) contender Bryan Thrift made his first 20-cut of the season after a poor start to the campaign as he caught 20-14 and moved up two spots to 4th with 39-10. Day-1-leader Rick Cotten completed the Top 5 with an 11-15 sack for a 37-14 total.

Here's how the Top 10 shakes out headed to the weekend (red numbers in parentheses represent deficit margin from the leader):

1. Mark Rose: 43-00
2. Jason Meninger: 41-07 (1-09)
3. Steve Kennedy: 40-10 (2-06)
4. Bryan Thrift: 39-10 (3-06)
5. Rick Cotten: 37-14 (5-02)
6. Greg Hackney: 36-11 (6-05)
7. John Cox: 36-10 (6-06)
8. Andy Montgomery: 34-10 (8-06)
9. Jonathan Newton: 34-07 (8-09)
10. Tony Davis: 33-07 (9-09)

The calm, partly sunny conditions made it much easier for competitors to move around Rayburn and made it possible for some bedding fish to be eye-balled. The water temperature was up as much as 5 or 6 degrees in some places and that trend should continue through the weekend.

Cox made the biggest move to get into the Top 12 with a 21-14 haul. Davis' 22-slot leap with an 18-02 stringer was also substantial.

The primary back-sliders were Ryan Davidson (4th to 37th with a three-fish bag for 4-15), Ramie Colson Jr. (8th to 60th, 5-07) and Lendell Martin Jr. (10th to 66th, 4-10).

Jason Meninger's 24-02 sack was the best of day 2.

Defending AOY Andy Morgan, the top-ranked angler in the world, missed the initial cut for the first time in the last seven Tour events. He didn't falter by much, though, as he ended up 22nd with 28-04.

The day-3 forecast predicts partly cloudy skies, a high temperature of 72 degrees and a north wind that should reach double-digits at times. The field will be cut to the Top 10 following the weigh-in, with the winner determined Sunday by highest 4-day weight.

Big One Lifted Rose

> Day 2: 5, 19-02 (10, 43-00)

Rose got nearly half of his weight on a single bite.

"It's kind of scary relying on one big one every day," he said. "Things changed for me today – I said yesterday that I didn't know what a lack of wind would do to me, and today I found out. It hurt me.

"I can catch a few without the wind, but I need it to catch them real good. I've got to figure out something during the day tomorrow if it doesn't blow. I eliminated a lot of things today, so I should run into something eventually."

He caught the bruiser about an hour into the day. It's the biggest fish weighed in the event so far, eclipsing the 8-13 Jay Yelas brought to the scale on day 1.

"It was pretty interesting," he said of the battle that ensued after it was hooked. "I caught it on a really shallow-running crankbait and it jumped like seven times. I've about worn the paint off a Strike King Series 3 this week."

None of the other six fish he caught on the day exceeded 3 pounds.

2nd: Meninger Scoring Deep

> Day 2: 5, 24-02 (10, 41-07)

Meninger exploited a wad of quality fish positioned away from the bank en route to compiling a day-best bag.

"(On day 1) I had an opportunity to catch a better bag than I did, but I had one straighten a hook out," he said. "I didn't know I was on that kind of quality. I caught a 7-03 right after that, so I knew there were some big ones there.

"Today I started there, out deep, and I gradually moved shallow. I had 20 pounds by 10 o'clock and I was stuck on that weight for a while, and I finally scrambled up to the bank and culled a couple times.

"I've caught fish as deep as 18 feet," he continued. "It's kind of like ledge-fishing, but not quite. They're all pre-spawn fish coming off the main lake."

He went through about 30 keepers and his best was a 7-pounder. He lost one that might've gone 8.

"That's a spot that the tournament could be won on, but the problem is that the conditions are going away – (the fish are) wanting to go shallow. When it was overcast and foggy they'd bite, but not when it got sunny and warm and calm.

"I'll start out there tomorrow and see what happens, but I think I might have to adjust."

3rd: Thrift Working Slowly

> Day 2: 5, 20-14 (10, 39-10)

Thrift did all his damage in the middle of the day – he endured a sluggish morning and a lackluster afternoon.

"I don't think I had a fish at 9:30, then I had all my weight by 1 o'clock," he said. "I'm just fishing slow and flipping mostly, dragging a Damiki Knockout around.

"I don't know what's going to happen tomorrow because I don't have enough experience on this lake – this is only the second time I've been here and I'm still learning as I go. I'm not going to make any changes, though, because doing what I'm doing is the only way I know how to catch a decent bag of fish."

He thinks the overall action might be better tomorrow as the water continues to warm, but that could be offset by local traffic.

"This is a popular lake and the weather's good, so a lot of people will be out fishing, and that might spread things around a little bit. Still, I think whoever wins is going to have to catch two 20-pound bags."

7th: Cox Bounced Around

> Day 2: 5, 21-14 (10, 36-10)

The calmer conditions afforded Cox much more mobility than he had on day 1, and he took full advantage. After a bomb at Okeechobee in his home state of Florida to begin the season, he's rebounded by advancing to the weekend in the last two events.

"Today was nice and calm and you could run all over the place," he said. "It was tough yesterday in those 5-footers."

He made 20 stops and estimated that he caught 20 to 30 keepers. His best was a 6-pounder.

"I'm really just running a bunch of stuff, most of it shallow," he said. "It's nothing too exciting. I don't know what's going to happen from here on out, but I truly believe it's going to get better."

He might do a bit of sight-fishing on day 3.

"I looked some in practice and saw some decent ones, but I was catching the better ones just fishing."

37th: Davidson didn't Connect

> Day 2: 3, 4-15 (8, 26-05)

Rookie Ryan Davidson thought a lack of wind today wouldn't hinder him too badly, but he found out otherwise.

"I didn't think it was really going to affect me," he said. "I caught them real early yesterday (when he weighed 21-06), so I thought I could get them again today whether we had the wind or not. It changed the way the fish were positioning on the cover."

He got five keeper bites and missed two of them.

"I went back in a spawning bay where I'd found some in practice and there was some fish chasing bream and some fry-guarders. My co-angler caught a big one on a frog and I had a couple blowups on a topwater, but I didn't connect.

He caught his day-1 bag on a spinnerbait.

"I was just targeting post-spawn fish in the grass, and the wind put them right on the edge where you could parallel it. It was pretty easy yesterday."

Notable

> Day 2 stats – 175 anglers, 114 limits (10 more than day 1), 18 fours, 21 threes, 14 twos, 5 ones, 3 zeroes (1 more than day 1).

> Jay Yelas was disappointed with his 78th-place showing on a venue that he lived on for several years and particularly perturbed that he failed to weigh a limit on either day. For his competition recap, click here to go to ProView Reports.
