Leading just one tour-level Angler of the Year race doesn't seem to be enough to suit Brett Hite. The way he's going, the Arizonan could soon sit atop every points list he's eligible for.

Hite took over the top spot today at the Bassmaster Elite Series season opener at Georgia's Lake Seminole, flopping a 20-11 sack on the scale to push his 2-day total to 45-06. He's seeking his second major-circuit victory in a little over a month, having triumphed at the Lake Okeechobee FLW Tour in early February.

Oh yeah, and under the Elite Series classification system, he's considered a "rookie," even though he has multiple tour-level wins on his résumé and considerable experience on the Bassmaster Tour prior to the inception of the Elites in 2006. If he prevails this weekend, he'll be leading the points battle among the circuit's first-year competitors, as well.

"I've got lots of confidence right now and I'm just trying to fish what my gut's telling me to," he said. "When you second-guess yourself, that's usually when bad stuff happens. I'm just fishing real calm and not letting anything worry me."

Florida veteran Bernie Schultz stayed in the No. 2 slot with a 17-10 bag that gave him a 44-08 total. The 59-year-old, who's never won a B.A.S.S. event in 275 outings, will enter the weekend less than a pound out of the lead.

Kevin Short, a two-time Elite winner with no Top-25 finishes since his victory at Pickwick Lake in 2010, maintained his No. 3 position with a 17-10 stringer for a 43-03 aggregate. Two more ounces back is Justin Lucas, another transfer from the FLW Tour whose 25-09 haul was the best of day 2.

Chad Morgenthaler, who like Hite logged extensive time with B.A.S.S. before '06 but spent the past 8 seasons as an FLW-only pro, rounded out the Top 5 with 43-00 after catching 22-06 today.

Here's how the Top 12 shapes up at the midway point, with deficit margin from the leader indicated by red numbers in parentheses:

1. Brett Hite: 45-06
2. Bernie Schultz: 44-08 (0-14)
3. Kevin Short: 43-03 (2-03)
4. Justin Lucas: 43-01 (2-05)
5. Chad Morgenthaler: 43-00 (2-06)
6. Shaw Grigsby: 42-10 (2-12)
7. Mark Davis: 41-13 (3-09)
8. Hank Cherry: 37-13 (7-09)
9. James Niggemeyer: 37-09 (7-13)
10. Randall Tharp: 37-07 (7-15)
11. Nate Wellman: 36-10 (8-12)
12. Morizo Shimizu: 36-08 (8-14)

There was a considerable amount of turnover in the standings as many competitors who'd fared well on day 1 found rougher going today, and vice versa. For instance, first-day leader Grigsby followed up his 30-pound sack with a 12-05 effort that dropped him to 6th. On the flip side, Greg Hackney boxed nearly 24 pounds today in the wake of a 5-pound opening-day sack and rocketed up from 100th place to make the cut in 42nd.

In addition to Lucas, other newcomers to the Top 12 today were James Niggemeyer (13th to 9th with 18-02 on day 2), Randall Tharp (32nd to 10th, 20-07), Nate Wellman (45th to 11th, 21-05) and Morizo Shimizu (17th to 12th, 17-06). They supplanted Tommy Biffle (5th to 36th, 6-08), David Walker (7th to 22nd, 12-05), Todd Fairlcoth (9th to 23rd, 12-04), Brian Snowden (11th to 17th, 14-07) and Takahiro Omori (12th to 18th, 14-15).

With a full moon coming Sunday and water temperatures continuing to rise, some think the derby could transform into a full-on spawn-based event over the weekend. There are factors that point to it not being won strictly off the beds, however, such as the heavy traffic expected over the next 2 days. Numerous local events will launch tomorrow morning and many of those anglers will head straight to the spawning grounds, giving the Elite lookers a lot of competition for the big females that have moved up.

Bernie Schultz has been in 2nd place after each of the first two weigh-ins.

The competitors were held at the launch for about 90 minutes this morning due to thick fog. That phenomenon is not anticipated to occur again as the next two nights will be considerably warmer.

Tomorrow's WeatherChannel.com forecast calls for mostly sunny skies, a high temperature of 75 degrees and a light southerly breeze topping out at 4 mph.

The field will be cut to the Top 12 following the day-3 weigh in. The winner will be determined Sunday based on highest 4-day weight.

Same Game for Hite

> Day 2: 5, 20-11 (10, 45-06)

Hite's bag was exactly 4 pounds lighter than the one he weighed the previous day, but it pushed him from 4th place to the top of the leaderboard.

"It was the same kind of deal," he said. "I don't think the fog delay hurt me real bad, but catching a couple of key fish early in the morning is pretty standard. It started out a little slow for me and I don't think I caught anything for the first hour. Then I put the (Minn Kota) Talons down and made the same exact cast and got another 4. After that, it got going really good.

"Then I started running some other stuff and at my second area I got a lot of bites," he continued. "I was out of there by noon or so with all of my weight. By 1 o'clock on both days I've gone to try to find new water that fits my (pre-spawn) pattern – I can tell what's right when I see it."

He didn't sight-fish at all again and has no intention of doing any looking over the weekend. He went through 10 keepers, the best of which went between 5 1/2 and 6 pounds.

"There's a lot more fish doing what I'm doing than there are trying to spawn, and fishing the pre-spawn was my goal coming in. The fish here are going to spawn for the next month and a half and it's not like all of a sudden a ton of them are going to pull up on the bank.

"I want to catch the nice, fat ones that are going to replenish and keep coming to me."

2nd: Schultz Mixing it Up

> Day 2: 5, 17-10 (10, 44-08)

Schultz's sack turned out to be a bit heavier than he'd anticipated.

"I thought I only had 15 or 16 pounds," he said. "Anytime I can crack 17, I'm happy."

Three of the fish he weighed today came from the beds – two in the 4-pound class and a 3-pounder. Of the other two, one took a Rapala Rippin' Rap lipless crankbait and the other was enticed by a Rapala DT Fat 3 square-bill.

"I didn't start on the beds today like I did yesterday," he said. "I started on an open-water grass flat and then went to the beds when the sun got up.

"I lost a couple of fish and I don't know if they would've helped me or not. That happened before I had a limit and that always makes for an anxious time."

He'll continue to work a looking-casting combo attack.

"I'm going to have to mix it up. There's enough fish (on the beds) to do it that way, but I can't get them going until later in the day."

Kevin Short caught his two best fish in the final hour of day 2.

3rd: Short's Day More Difficult

> Day 2: 5, 17-10 (10, 43-03)

Short didn't lose any ground from day 1 despite a bag that was 8 pounds lighter.

"Yesterday was pretty easy, but that wasn't the case today," he said. "We had a cold morning and we spent an hour and a half sitting around and waiting and by the time I got to my first spot, it was already past the time when I'd had 17 or 18 pounds the day before.

"I think by that time (today) that school had come up and done what they were going to do and were leaving. I caught three little ones real quick, and then nothing. It took awhile to get a limit today – I had to get up on the bank and fish the shallows, whereas yesterday I didn't. I knew those fish would probably be smaller."

He went back offshore after he had five in the box and boated his two best specimens in the final hour.

"At 3:10 I caught a 6-pounder and a 3:30 I caught a 5, so maybe I figured something out that'll work tomorrow. I might not have been fishing the exact right stuff and maybe I've found the deal now."

He's completely unconcerned about what the Elite sight-fishermen will be doing.

"After pulling into the park where I'm staying and seeing all the boats that showed up with the weekend guys, I'm not worried about that at all. I know what most of those guys are going to do, they're going sight-fishing, and I don't blame them."

4th: Lucas Adjusted

> Day 2: 5, 25-09 (10, 43-01)

Lucas said he made a couple of adjustments to his approach today that paid big dividends.

"I've got one place that's just a good little area," he said. "I sight-fished a lot yesterday, and I did some of that today, but I mixed it up quite a bit."

The fish he caught from the bed weighed between 4 1/2 and 5 pounds. His best of the day was a 6-pounder.

"I caught six keepers (and all his weight) by 11:30 and then I went and looked for sight-fish for the rest of the day. There's still some to be caught because this place is so vast and there's so many areas for them to spawn, but I don't think you can win this tournament doing only that. No way.

"I think if I can catch 22 or 23 pounds each of the next 2 days, that would give me a chance. The fishing may get better just because it keeps warming up."

36th: Biffle's Action Died

> Day 2: 4, 6-08 (9, 30-05)

Biffle wasn't completely surprised that he caught just a little more than a quarter of the weight he brought to the scale on day 1.

"I knew that was subject to happen," he said. "I got lucky yesterday and got three big bites.

"Today I just didn't get any good bites. One thing that hurt was the fog day – yesterday I caught some fairly quick, then there was a dead spell. Today I wasn't even there yet by the time of the dead spell."

He hadn't made up his mind about what to do on day 3.

"Probably the best thing for me to do would be to go flipping, but that didn't work too good in practice. I'm sure somebody's got some flipping going on somewhere, but I don't know if tomorrow's going to be the best day to go practicing.

"I think the water came up some today and maybe the fish I was catching went to the bank. I may fish the same areas, but a lot shallower."

Notable
