Bryan Thrift is fishing the way he likes to. So is Randy Haynes and so is J.T. Kenney.

It stands to reason that they make up the Top 3 in the standings after 2 days of the Lake Eufaula FLW Tour. Whether any or all of them can keep it up is anyone's guess. Eufaula has been that tough to figure out this week. Four anglers presently in the Top 10 were shy of a limit one of the first 2 days, a rarity at most tour-level events.

Coming off a 20-06 day on Thursday, Thrift ran-and-gunned his way to 16-15 today to rise to the lead with 37-05.

He's got nearly a 2 1/2-pound cushion over Haynes, an offshore maven who stuck 17-11 to push his total to 34-14. Kenney, meanwhile, is also working away from the bank and his 16-09 effort today moved him up to 3rd with 34-06.

Day-1 leader Justin Lucas brought in just three fish, but they totaled 11-03, which blunted his slide to 4th with 33-09. Scott Martin completed the Top 5 with a 13-11 stringer that bumped his total to 31-15.

Here's how the Top 10 shaped up after 2 days of competition, with the deficit margin from Thrift indicated by red numbers in parentheses:

1. Bryan Thrift: 37-05
2. Randy Haynes: 34-14 (2-07)
3. J.T. Kenney: 34-06 (2-15)
4. Justin Lucas: 33-09 (3-12)
5. Scott Martin: 31-15 (5-06)
6. Andy Morgan: 31-13 (5-08)
7. Kelley Jaye: 31-07 (5-14)
8. Joe Don Setina: 31-04 (6-01)
9. John Devere: 30-07 (6-14)
10. Stetson Blaylock: 30-05 (7-00)

Only one bag over 19 pounds was weighed in today and 14 fewer pros brought in limits than on day 1, serving as evidence that the lake toughened up under the day-long sunny conditions.

John Devere parlayed his 22-07 sack, the biggest of the day, into a berth among the Top 20 as he rocketed up the leaderboard from 94th to 9th. Brent Ehrler might have put a dent his Angler of the Year hopes by weighing two for 5-10 today. He slipped from 9th to 46th in the final standings.

There's an off chance of some morning rain and thunderstorms tomorrow in the Eufaula, Ala., area, but temperatures are still expected to rise into the upper 80s with a south wind between 5 to 10 mph.

The Top 10 after tomorrow's round will advance to fish Sunday's final round when the winner will be determined by highest cumulative weight.

Thrift Jumping Around

> Day 2: 5, 16-15 (10, 37-05)

Thrift said it's been far from a picnic so far at Eufaula. He's not getting a high volume of bites, but the ones he's connecting with are stout fish, save for a couple squeakers today.

"It was tough out there today," he said. "I think I caught seven keepers all day and three of them were 1-09 or 1-10. I did the same thing I did yesterday. I ran all over the place. I'd make a few casts until I ran across one. It seems like when you run across one, you can make him bite with five or six casts."

Making the weekend after struggling at Beaver Lake last month means a lot to him. He'll definitely remain in the hunt for a second career Angler of the Year crown.

"I haven't had a bad year by any stretch, but the last two tournaments have been frustrating," he said. "I caught a lot of fish, but just didn't get any quality bites. This week, I'm catching some decent fish so it feels good to get a couple quality fish in the boat."

He's been spending most of his time offshore, but he's seeing a lot of the lake.

Randy Haynes was irritated that he had a 2-pounder in his weigh bag today.

"Everywhere I'm fishing is a one-bite deal," he said. "I like fishing like that. I'd like to have a school where I could pull up and guarantee five bites, but I like running and gunning. I can pull up and make five or 10 casts because every time you move the boat it's a mystery. You never know when you're going to come across a 6-pounder."

He tangled with a 5 1/2-pounder this morning that anchored his bag.

"I was pretty happy when I caught it because I knew it would be a difference-maker," he said. "I knew I only needed two more keepers at that point and I'd probably have the Top 20 made."

He's noticed a couple variables have changed that indicate more fish will continue to move away from the bank and that could play to his advantage.

"It seems like the water has cleared up since practice a fair amount," he said. "It's also dropped a good bit so it's set up for the fish to move out. The water's also warmed up 10 to 12 degrees since we've been here."

2nd: Haynes Happy

> Day 2: 5, 17-11 (10, 34-14)

Despite moving into 2nd place with after 2 days, Haynes was still miffed he had to weigh in a 2-pounder today.

"I had two or three that were right around 4 pounds, but I really feel like I gave somebody a pound today," he said.

Having never been to Eufaula, though, he's pretty thrilled to have made the weekend cut, let alone be in contention for the win.

"I'm right in the middle of a learning curve here," he said. "I thought I had something figured out and caught them in a couple different places, but that went away.

"It's special, though, to make the 3rd day at Eufaula. It's one of the lakes I've always wanted to fish. There's a lot of history here with David Fritts and Bobby Padgett and it's a big cranking lake. It's special lake to me because it's an offshore fisherman's dream. To make it on my first trip, that's pretty special."

He said he's been casting a Strike King 5XD and 6XD crankbait trying to dial in just how the fish are setting up on the ledges.

"I'm doing a bunch of searching," he said. "Most of these fish are in schools of seven or eight and you'll catch one, two or three of them. I've tried to figured out where the rest of them go, but I haven't been able to. I really truly think the fish aren't out there good yet. The water's so far up in the grass, I think everything's really scattered out right now."

3rd: Kenney Working Offshore

> Day 2: 5, 16-09 (10, 34-06)

Kenney's haul today was right in line with what he thought he could catch and he thinks more fish are on their way to him.

"It's pretty much what I'd expected to catch," he said. "My practice wasn't that great, but I'd found a few schools. I know I probably could've caught more today, but I was trying to manage some fish today."

It's been a mixture of typical ledge-fishing presentations for the Floridian.

J.T. Kenney backed off some of his areas today after having a stellar morning.

"I've been throwing a crankbait, the Alabama Rig, and a big worm," he said. "This place isn't like the Tennessee River where you can catch 20 in 20 casts. You have to fish around and maybe catch one or two. I think four was the most I caught off one spot today."

He didn't notice any significant changes in how the lake fished from day 1 other than he was able to increase his early-morning catch rate. He did weigh in a dead fish today that cost him 4 ounces.

"I'm fishing where they're coming, not where they're leaving from," he said. "I didn't lean on any of my spots real hard. They're just moving out on that offshore structure. There's not a whole bunch of them and that's why I was trying to be careful so I'll hopefully have a chance."

4th: Lucas Relieved

> Day 2: 3, 11-03 (8, 33-09)

Lucas caught the same quality of fish he caught on day 1. He just didn't catch enough of them. His highlight of the day was a 5-pounder.

"It was really tough for me," he said. "I had a couple of missed opportunities that would've helped me, but other than that I had three good fish."

He concentrated more time today away from the bank where he had located a handful of fish in the 4-pound class.

"It just wasn't happening for me," he said. "I think I'll spend more time shallow tomorrow and hope to catch a couple nice ones before I move back out."

He came into the tournament inside the Top 30 in AOY points, so he'll certainly help his case for a Forrest Wood Cup berth no matter where he winds up.

"Last year, I missed the Cup by (12 points) so this is huge for momentum," he said. "This tournament was a big wild card because of how tough it's been. It's been a grind each day. I feel a huge amount of relief right now."

5th: Martin Mixing and Matching

> Day 2: 5, 13-11 (10, 31-15)

Martin's been spending most of his time targeting bank-oriented fish, but won't hesitate to move out should the need arise tomorrow as he clinched his first 20-cut of the season today.

"It's been a good lake for me the last couple of times I've been here," he said. "I'm mixing it up every day, throwing swimbaits to flipping and even catching a couple on a frog."

He's sensing the tournament could be won deep, but he's seen too many good fish up shallow to abandon what he's comfortable doing.

Scott Martin has been focused mainly on shallow-water fish.

"I think the fish are split about half and half," he said. "I think more are moving deep every day and that worries me because guys like (David) Fritts could intersect with them and get a school fired up. With the way the spring has been and how the water's up and the water temperatures where they were, it told me I could probably catch them shallow all week.

"I have some deep fish, but haven't fished them much. That's more of a fall-back plan because I'm still seeing some bigger fish cruising up shallow."

20th: Fritts Needs Current

> Day 2: 5, 18-12 (10, 27-15)

Maybe David Fritts maybe didn't mean to, but it sure sounded like he put the other 19 pros fishing tomorrow on notice that he's dialed in.

"If they move water tomorrow, I'm going to catch them," he said after weighing the third-biggest bag on day 2 that helped him advance 64 spots up the leaderboard.

"I just flip-flopped what I was doing and started where I ended up yesterday and just changed up my timing," he said.

It sure seemed to work. He said the majority of his fish are coming out of 6 to 12 feet of water on a Carolina rig or crankbait.

"I know where a lot of fish are, but it's just getting them to bite my hook," he said. "I really think the fish are moving in when they're moving the water. They tend to go into the creeks and ditches and spread out on the banks.

"If I were to guess, I'd say probably half the fish on this lake have not spawned yet. I'm pretty sure of that. If they trickle a little bit of water, I'm going to catch them these next 2 days."

Coming off a practice during which he had a couple 20-pound days, he was stunned at how he struggled on day 1 when he weighed 9-03 (84th place).

"Yesterday, I was shell-shocked," he said. "I fished some of the exact same places today and for some reason they bit."

45th: Ingram Bummed

> Day 2: 4, 7-11 (9, 23-07)

A lot was said about Ryan Ingram's prowess at Eufaula leading up to the tournament and many pros were sincerely concerned they were fishing for the runner-up spot because of his presence in the field.

However, the lake didn't set up to suit Ingram's strengths this week and he struggled today. Still, he managed to scratch out a $10,000 check in his first Tour-level event.

"It's just fishing tough," he said. "I managed to catch enough in the last hour on the first day to put me in the hunt and today, I just couldn't make it happen. This place is 100 percent, without a doubt, current dependent."

Ingram said he forgot to call the dam offices this morning to check the generation schedule. If he had, he'd have probably been able to capitalize as there was a good bit of current early on.

"I took off and did the wrong thing for the first 2 hours because the water was moving," he added. "I caught a bunch of fish, but this lake is getting overrun with spotted bass. I must've caught 30 fish that were between 11 and 13 inches on a crankbait."

He said he was a little disappointed he couldn't have put on a better show at his home lake.

"I don't expect to win them all," he said. "I lose a lot more than I win here, but it's a little disheartening that the first big tournament to come to the lake in many years had to come after the worst winter that dragged out into April and May because usually in May I can do pretty well here."
