Kreiger Steered Clear Of Crowds, Keyed On Shad

Koby Kreiger has made a career of trying to be as consistent as possible on the water. Sure, the Floridian has been known to bring in hefty limits from time to time, but you’ll rarely see him haul a huge weight to the stage one day and strike out the next.

Employing his trademark steady and patient approach at last week’s EverStart Series Championship at the Ouachita River, he found an area well away from the heavy pressure of D’Arbonne Bayou and came away with his second career victory in the event and fifth career EverStart trophy.

He took the lead after day 2 and held on the rest of the way. His 4-day total of 38-05 was nearly 4 pounds heavier than runner-up Kent Ware and earned him a $50,000 payday and a new boat, as well as an early berth in next year’s Forrest Wood Cup.

“It’s a good feeling,” he said. “I wanted to get win No. 5 last year at Kentucky Lake (at the 2011 EverStart Championship), but it didn’t happen. This year, it did and I’m happy that it was another championship, so it’s a pretty cool feeling.

“This tournament had more to do with mental toughness than actual fishing. It was just a grind and you had to stay patient and mentally tough and not give up because sooner or later, it seemed like every day you were going to have a flurry or two where you could catch them. If you got down on yourself and started moving around and not just staying hard at it, you sort of fell apart. I was able to stay calm and keep my head in the game and end up every day being able to have a couple flurries that got me to where I was at.”

Here’s how he did it.

Practice

Heeding the weather forecasts for the tournament days, Kreiger opted not to launch at first light during practice. Instead, he waited until around 10:30 a.m. when the temperatures had warmed to about what they were forecast to be during competition.

“I didn’t want to get out there and practice when it was freezing cold and eliminate something that may actually be good,” he said. “This time of year, the bite usually starts kicking in around 10 o’clock because that’s when the baits seems to get more active.”

He did, however, fish until dark each day and wound up settling on an area about 50 miles south of the takeoff ramp, but not before checking out the popular D’Arbonne Bayou on the first day.

“That was probably the best thing because when I went up there, everybody was up there,” he said. “There were boats everywhere. I basically said, ‘This is a waste of time. There’s too many people up here. This isn’t going to be good.’ I pretty much wrote it off because of the pressure factor.”

He spent the next 3 days in the main river and in smaller backwaters just off the river, focusing on schools of baitfish well away from the crowds.

“I figured I’d have a lot less competition because not a lot of people are going to run 100 miles round trip to go catch 8 or 9 pounds,” he said. “The pressure factor was going to be less, plus there was just so much bait down there. In the evenings, I’d just sit in the river and you could just see it. It would go for miles. They’d be suspended and I thought if there was that much bait there, then there had to fish around, too.”

The research Kreiger did leading up to the tournament told him 10 to 12 pounds per day would be enough to put someone in the hunt for the win, hence his slow-and-steady mindset.

“Someone could have a big day, but to do that 2 days in a row, especially back in those backwaters and bayous where there were a lot of boats, that was going to be very hard to do 4 days in a row,” he said. “I knew that if I could stay consistent – I was hoping to catch 10 to 12 pounds a day instead of 8 to 10 – on a body of water like that, that’s a lot more important than having a big day and then zeroing the next day.”

He started the tournament fishing an underwater point that stuck out into the river channel. He’d gotten bit there during the afternoon in practice using a smaller umbrella rig. After spending 45 minutes there on the first morning, though, he left without fooling any fish.

From there, he lived on the banks of river-channel bends with isolated wood, picking off fish that were stalking wads of baitfish in the upper portion of the water column with a spinnerbait and flat-sided crankbait. As the day wore on, he moved off the bank a bit, working over deeper water and connected on fish that were hanging in the tops of trees.

“It took me a little while on the first morning to get started, but once I figured that out, I was keyed in the next 3 days,” he said.

He found himself in 2nd place after day 1, thanks to a 12-05 stringer that featured a 4-pounder.

While his weight came down to 9-05 on day 2, it was enough to push him to the top of the leaderboard as he again made a huge run to within a half mile of the Columbia lock to catch his fish.

Day 3 was more of a struggle despite getting a fair number of bites, but most were short strikes. He did manage a small limit (four spotted bass and one largemouth) for 7-09, including a couple on a small umbrella rig, and that gave him an 8-ounce cushion over Brandon Medlock with 1 day left.

He stuck 9-05 on the final day – the heaviest bag among the 10 finalists – while Medlock stumbled, clearing the way for Kreiger to claim the title.

Winning Pattern Notes

In practice, Kreiger worked with Derek Hicks, who finished 17th, and they were able to get dialed in on the shad pattern pretty quickly after making the long run south.

“Once we figured it out, it was one of those deals where you could say, ‘Okay, we’re going to go catch them over there and then go there and catch ‘em,’” he said.

They marked countless pieces of isolated wood and almost all of them had shad nearby or holding tight to the cover.

“In the mornings, the bait would be down in 17 or 18 feet,” he said. “In the afternoon, the bait would come up to 7 or 8 feet in the tops of the trees and basically, anything you threw over top of those trees that looked like a shad, they’d eat it.”

When he’d move out to deeper water later in the mornings, he’d be over 60 feet, but continued to target the top 4 or 5 feet.

> Crankbait gear: 6’6” medium-action G. Loomis IMX 782 spinning rod, Shimano Stradic CI4 spinning reel, 10-pound McCoy Mean Green co-polymer line, CP Series 1 and 2 crankbait (silver shad).

> When retrieving the crank, he’d get bit if it deflected off branches or if he reeled it through a ball of shad and hesitated, the fish would take it once he resumed reeling it back.

> Umbrella rig gear: 7’3” heavy-action G. Loomis GLX 874 casting rod, same reel as spinnerbait, 50-pound PowerPro braided line (moss green), Powell’s Custom Tackle Swim N’ Frenzy Mini Frenzy rig (four-wire and three-wire), 1/8-ounce jigheads, Reaction Innovations Little Dipper (bad shad green) or Zoom Swimming Super Fluke Junior (smoking shad).

> He lost the four-wire version of the rig on day 1 and threw a three-wire model the rest of the event. He worked it in areas with less timber.

The Bottom Line

> Main factor in his success – “Just staying hard at it and being patient and waiting for the fish to start biting instead of running around being crazy.”

> Performance edge – “Everything worked flawlessly. My Minn Kota trolling motor – I hit so many stumps over the course of 4 days of practice and the 4 days of the tournament and it worked perfectly. My Evinrude ran great and my Humminbird GPS was a great tool for getting me down there. One day, it was so foggy in the morning, you could barely see. Being able to follow my track down and back each day was important. On day 1, I was boat 50 and I was the first guy down there. Everything worked out perfect.”
