Consistency is generally the key to winning a 4-day bass tournament. In a 3-day event, one gigantic bag can sometimes do the trick.

Brandon Medlock won the Okeechobee Southeastern EverStart for the second straight year last weekend, compiling a 68-02 total over 3 days that left him more than 6 pounds clear of the field. More than half of that weight came on day 2,

when he brought a bulging 35-07 bag to the scale that took him from outside the Top 5 to the peak of the leaderboard with a 15-pound advantage.

Although he used the same bait (the Medlock Double-Guard Jig made by his father) to compile both victories, he didn't go about them in exactly the same way.

"The difference this year was the number of spots I fished," he said. "I had two areas that I fished in the tournament last year, and this year I didn't find any single area where I could just sit down and catch a big bag. It was a lot more stop-and-go.

"That's just because the lake is fishing better this year. Last year there wasn't enough clean water to do that, but this year the whole lake's just incredible."

He'll compete for $100,000 in the FLW Tour Open at Okeechobee in 2 weeks, and thus declined to divulge many specifics of his EverStart pattern. The following is some general information regarding his latest Big O triumph.

Practice

Medlock, a resident of nearby Lake Placid, Fla., participated in two local derbies leading up to the EverStart, so in essence he had an extremely long practice period.

"I knew what the fish were doing after each weather change, and I'd actually planned to solely punch mats for this tournament," he said. "The fish were all under there, and some of them were giants. There were a few guys we were expecting to catch 30 pounds a day.

"Two weeks prior to that the fish had pulled out of the mats, and then the same thing happened again. It got harder to catch them under there and people were catching them doing other things."

Competition

> Day 1: 5, 17-08
> Day 2: 5, 35-07
> Day 3: 5, 15-03
> Total = 15, 68-02

Medlock laid a decent foundation for himself with his 17 1/2-pound bag on day 1, then for all intents and purposes, he won the event on day 2. By the start of that day he'd totally abandoned the mats and had begun flipping and pitching around a specific type of vegetation that he opted not to identify.

"It had more to do with the consistency and thickness of the vegetation than anything else," he said.

His gargantuan bag was headed up by a 10 1/2-pounder, and the other four averaged better than 6 pounds each. His massive lead caused him to take a relatively conservative approach to the final day.

"Having that big lead, I didn't want to run around a lot. I knew if I caught 15 pounds, the guy in 2nd (Keith Fels) would need 30 pounds, and I didn't foresee that happening. Randall Tharp was the one guy I was worried about, and he was 19 pounds behind.

Medlock attached his 1-ounce jig to Sufix 832 Advanced Superline.

"Once I knew I had 15 pounds I started back toward the ramp. I was making a substantial run and I didn't need to spend any more time out there where I was."

Tharp, the FLW Tour pro from Alabama who spends much of each winter at Okeechobee, did indeed make a run toward the top with a 28-14 stringer that was easily the best of the day, but it wasn't nearly enough.

Winning Gear Notes

> Jig gear: 8' extra-heavy Carrot Stix rod, Shimano Curado casting reel (7.3:1 ratio), 65-pound Sufix 832 Advanced Superline braid, 1-ounce Medlock Double-Guard Jig (black/blue), Gambler Otter trailer (black/blue or junebug).

> Medlock said the color of the jig trailer made little difference, "as long as it was dark."

The Bottom Line

Main factor in his success – "Having the confidence to fish the way I did on the second day. I ran and gunned through about 25 spots and I hit them in a rotation. I didn't stay in one spot for more than 15 minutes and if I'd catch a fish, I'd be gone within 10 minutes after that."

Performance edge – "The (Mercury) Optimax for getting me there and back – I never had any fear in my mind that I wasn't going to make it. Also, the jig to get the bites and the Carrot Stix rod to get them out of that stuff they were in. Without an extra-stiff rod, I couldn't have gotten them out."
