Lane Capitalized On Wind To Leave Field In Dust

Chris Lane has proven four times over that he can win at the triple-A level – he has three Bassmaster Open victories and an FLW EverStart triumph on his ledger. He hopes that his latest conquest, which came last weekend at the Harris Chain Open in his native Florida, will propel him to a second straight strong season on the Bassmaster Elite Series and perhaps even his first tour-level trophy.

He'll have a bit more leeway to go for broke on the Elite Series this year, as the win locked down his spot in the 2013 Bassmaster Classic (provided he competes in the remaining two events on the circuit).

"You take what you can get, but I'm thrilled that I won this tournament," said the 36-year-old resident of Guntersville, Ala., who's about to begin his seventh tour-level season. "Being in next year's Classic already, I'm not going to say I'm just going to go for the win in every (Elite) tournament, but that will allow me to take a risk or two that I normally might not take."

He grabbed the lead on day 2 at the Harris Chain and turned the event into a rout on the final day with a 28-05 bag that was easily the best of the tournament. His margin of victory over runner-up Clifford Pirch was more than 14 1/2 pounds.

Here's how he did it.

Practice

Lane arrived in Florida the Sunday before the tournament to fish for half a day with his father, Robert. The patriarch of the fishing Lane clan had given the family a scare recently with a medical issue involving his heart, but his youngest son said he's been given a clean bill of health by his doctor and is back at full strength.

Official practice got under way on Monday and he spent that day on Lake Harris. He went to Griffin the following day and caught a 4-pounder off some lily pads right away, and took that as a sign of good things to come.

He went to another pad-laden area to kill some time before moving to a spot that he wanted to check at precisely 2 o'clock. He got five good bites there, and then several more at the late-afternoon locale. He decided that if everything went as planned, he'd save that last place for the final day.

Lane chose to begin the tournament at the place on Griffin where he'd gotten the five solid bites, hoping to catch at least 13 or 14 pounds to put himself in contention for the 12-cut the following day. He exceeded his expectations by catching 20.

He caught a bigger bag on day 2 to move to the top of the leaderboard. His day was fairly unspectacular until a 20-minute stretch in the afternoon that produced a pair of 8-pounders

"That's when I knew there were some real giants in there," he said. "There was a lot of boat pressure that day and I didn't get a lot of bites - I think I only culled a couple of times."

He went back to the place where he'd caught the two 8s to start day 3 and boated a 3-pounder and a 5 almost immediately. That allowed him to relax a bit, but his nerves got a jolt a short time later when his co-angler caught a 7 and a 6 on back-to-back casts out of a place where he'd just thrown.

That told him he needed to slow down, so he pulled his boat out into 8 feet of water and put his Power-Poles down. Within a couple of casts, he hooked (and subsequently boated) a fish that pushed the 10-pound mark.

He went through numerous fish between then and noon and eventually surpassed the 28-pound threshold. But even then, he took nothing for granted.

"I never thought I had it won. Harris is known for 35-pound bags and I knew if I made one slip, I could be in trouble.

He gave himself plenty of time to navigate the locks and idle zones on the way back to the launch for the final weigh-in.

"It turned out to be a very rewarding tournament. I just can't say enough to thank the whole team of sponsors that stuck with me through a rough couple of years and helped me get to where I'm at. Now I just have to keep it up."

Pattern Notes

Lane said the hard south wind that blew during the event did him a huge favor.

"On the second day the water temperature dropped 3 degrees, down to 58," he said. "They weren't biting real good that day and I was fortunate that I slowed down and caught those two big ones.

"The wind out of the south was pushing water from the deeper places into the shallows and that kept the temperature down. If it had warmed up, those fish would've all pushed up shallow."

He caught most of his fish from the 4-foot depth range with his boat in 8 feet.

"Catching those two big ones (on day 2) told me those fish were still out a ways – they hadn't gone to the bank yet."

He used a Luck-E-Strike RC2 crankbait to locate concentrations of fish, then went to work on them with plastics. He estimated that a worm produced 10 of his 15 weigh-in fish.

"I've always had success throwing a worm on monofilament because it has a little bit of stretch," he said. "With fluoro or braid, I sometimes have a tendency to rip it out of their mouth on the hookset."
