Dan Morehead is a Paducah, Ky. resident with a ton of experience at Kentucky Lake, but very little of it has come at this time of year.

"I did pre-fish before the cutoff more than I usually do because of the seriousness of the tournament," he said in reference to last week's EverStart Championship. "But even though it's my home lake and I live here, I'm always deer hunting in the fall. I don't fish for bass unless somebody makes me do it."

Coming off an FLW Tour season in which he missed qualifying for the Forrest Wood Cup by just a handful of places, he took the possibility of that happening again in 2012 off the table with a 4-day total of 61-04 that bested the field by about 4 1/2 pounds. It garnered him $50,000, a new Ranger boat and a guaranteed slot in next year's Cup at Georgia's Lake Lanier.

Here's how he did it.

Practice

Morehead got some pre-cutoff practice help from an "old and dear friend" who guides at Kentucky and fishes it year-round.

"He showed me some stumps and some other stuff he fishes and does well on in the fall," Morehead said. "I had some of the best days in pre-practice that I've had in 20 years and the last day I had five that went 28 pounds just throwing a topwater on some shallow bars."

He tried to revive that action during official practice, but to no avail. Then he turned to the Alabama Rig – a bait he's had in his possession since May while pre-practicing for the Pickwick Tour event (he and roommate Scott Suggs were introduced to Tammy Poss, wife of the Rig's inventor, by a guy they were staying with at the time).

He'd also gotten a helpful hint during practice from good friend Jim Tutt, the eventual 4th-place finisher at Kentucky Lake.

"He's one of the few guys who I know is never going to B.S. me, and we started comparing notes and figured out we were doing the exact same thing. He told me how good he was catching them on the Alabama Rig, and obviously he wasn't lying.

"Once I got onto that, everything came together real quick."

He'd been fishing shallow water at the back ends of pockets that were harboring large populations of shad. As far as bass went, he was catching numbers, but the size left something to be desired.

"From there I just moved to the last deep water in the bay – the same places I'd throw a jerkbait in March. The bigger fish were there feeding on big gizzard shad, and you had to have some good-size rock and a 45-degree bank."

Competition

> Day 1: 5, 15-03
> Day 2: 5, 12-12
> Day 3: 5, 14-00
> Day 4: 5, 19-05
> Total = 20, 61-04

While much of the field went south from the launch in Buchanan, Tenn., Morehead headed north toward his home. He was determined not to make a cast in Tennessee waters due to that state's regulation that an umbrella-type rig can contain no more than three lures that have hook sizes of 8 or smaller. The Alabama Rig is designed to accommodate five lures.

He made a 25-mile run through driving rain on day 1 and found conditions that were ideal for a topwater plug. He said he had an opportunity for a 17-pound bag, but missed a couple of quality fish on a Zara Spook. His stringer was highlighted by a 4-pounder.

"After that the topwater bite just died," he said. "I kept throwing it and trying to make it happen, but it just wasn't there."

The A-Rig accounted for all of his fish over the final 3 days. He caught about 20 keepers on day 2, only six on day 3 and a little over a dozen on day 4. His final-day bag, which was the largest in the field by far, contained a 6 1/2-pounder and a 4.

Morehead's Alabama Rigs featured Berkley Hollow Belly swimbaits in both the 4-inch and 5-inch versions.

Pattern Notes

Morehead said the fish he caught were suspended in relatively shallow water. He kept his boat over depths of 10 to 20 feet and threw the A-Rig almost to the bank, and then brought it back at a fairly slow, steady rate.

The place that surrendered his big bag on day 4 was a long bar near the mouth of a large bay that intersected with the creek channel at its deepest end. The water was extremely shallow on top of the bar and got deeper via a series of stairsteps down both sides.

"I had about 4 feet of visibility and I could see where that first breakline was," he said. "When the bait would come off the ledge, I'd slow it down and let it sink a little. About 90% of the bites came in that zone, in about 5 or 6 feet of water."

Winning Gear Notes

> Alabama Rig gear – 7' heavy-action American Rodsmiths rod, Shimano Calais casting reel (6.2:1 ratio), 65-pound Spiderwire Stealth braided line, Alabama Rig with original 1/8-ounce swimbait heads, Berkley Hollow Belly swimbaits (Tennessee shad).

> He had two Alabama-Rig setups – one with four 4-inch swimbaits and a 5-incher on the center wire, and the other with five 5-inch baits that he used for culling after he'd caught a limit.

> Topwater gear: 6'6" medium-action American Rodsmiths rod, same reel, 17-pound P-Line monofilament line, Zara Spook (bone).

The Bottom Line

> Main factor in his success – "The wind was important. The water was pretty clear for Kentucky Lake and as long as the wind blew, the fish would bite. If you didn't have the wind, they'd peck at it but they wouldn't take it. That's really where my local knowledge came into play – the wind blew from several different directions during the tournament and I knew where to go to stay in it and stay on that pattern."

> Performance edge – "I'd have to say it was the Alabama Rig. The sky's the limit with that thing right now and I can't wait to see what wild ideas that people are going to come up with for it. I'm going to take a little hiatus to do some deer hunting, but I'm going to do some experimenting with it real soon and try to figure out some things myself."
