Table Rock may be one of the premier fisheries in North America – a place where an angler can catch numbers and quality in all three black-bass species – but the fishing there has been pretty miserable this fall.

Robbie Dodson won a Central EverStart there this month with about 12 1/2 pounds a day, and it took Kevin Short just a hair better than 11 pounds a day to win the Table Rock Bassmaster Central Open last weekend.

It was a bittersweet victory for Short, who rallied from 5th place to win with a "monster" 15-pound final-day bag. He fished all three Northern Opens and didn't win. He jackpotted this Central Open and won. Since he didn't fish the other Central Opens, he was unable to retain the 2012 Bassmaster Classic berth awarded to Open winners.

He did pocket better than $50,000, which helps.

"Considering the year I had on the Elite Series, and my performance there, it feels pretty sweet to actually perform well – especially under brutally tough conditions," Short said. "If it's nasty-ugly tough, I can usually figure it out better than everybody else. I don't know why, but it is what it is and this win really feels good."

Here's a look at how Short did it.

Practice

Short knew that Dodson won the EverStart up the James River, and so did the rest of the Central Open field. So it was jam-packed in there during practice. Still, Short gave it a go for a full day and caught three keepers, but determined that any pattern there would be burned after the first day.

"I just really didn't see what I wanted there and I figured it would be won deep," Short said. "So I spent the next 2 1/2 days out deep looking for dropshot fish – from 15 feet out to 45 or 50 feet. I found what I thought was enough fish to do really well in the tournament."

Competition

> Day 1: 3, 7-10
> Day 2: 4, 10-07
> Day 3: 5, 15-07
> Total = 12, 33-08

Right on cue, conditions took a drastic turn for day 1 as the weather became cloudy and windy. To match the conditions, Short started early with a spinnerbait in a creek. The creek was a "dead zone," he said, which was a bit of irony, because that same creek would eventually become the winning spot. But that first day he caught a single keeper in there, then went to his deep stuff and ended the day two fish short of a limit.

His two deep fish bit a spoon and a dropshot.

Mother Nature reversed herself on day 2 and Short followed the cue. After a fog delay, he began with his deep stuff in anticipation of a still, sunny day.

He caught a deep fish on a Jewel jig, then ran 40 miles to the same creek he fished on day 1.

He noted: "I spent the rest of the day in there and managed to catch three largemouths. I caught one that was probably 4 1/2 and I hadn't caught anything that big in there in practice. So when I caught that, I thought there could be more big fish in there.

"So when I made the (Top-10) cut and I was 4 pounds back going into the final day, I knew I'd have to have a real sack to have a shot at winning. That creek was the only place I knew where I felt I could do that – it was the only hope I had to catch largemouths. I went back in there – it was Long Creek – and dropped the trolling motor and spent the day there. That's where I caught them all that final day."

His 15 1/2-pound final-day bag was stunning. No other competitor caught better than 5 1/2 pounds that day.

Winning Pattern Notes

Short caught all his day-3 fish on a WEC E1 crankbait – the same bait that has produced most of his career wins. He said he did throw some smaller square-bills, "but that little E1 was the king."

There were several boats in the creek on day 2, Short added, but most were fishing channel swings, transition areas and other classic fall structure. He said he was on the other side of the creek fishing flat areas.

"The trolling motor was raised up and the bottom of my Bass Cat was bumping through the gravel. I was just throwing the bait around any at every piece of wood I could find, whether it was in 18 inches of water or 5 feet."

A few other details from Short:

  • "I was fishing a pretty specific portion of the creek. There was a mile to a mile and half of the creek that had the best water color. It was stained just to the point where you could barely see a piece of cover lying about a foot below the surface. Further back and further out the water was too clear."

  • "There were millions and millions of shad in that section of the creek in all different sizes. If you blew through an area you'd see only small ones. But if you fished your way through you'd actually see some 3- and 4-inch shad and even some 6- and 8-inch gizzard shad. There were all different sizes of shad in that section of the creek."

    Winning Gear Notes

    > Crankbait gear: 7'4" medium-moderate St. Croix Mojo The Crankster rod, Lew's Tournament Pro Speed Spool casting reel, 14-pound Vicious Elite fluorocarbon, WEC E1 crankbait (classic).

    > He changed out the stock hooks on the crank for No. 4 Gamakatsu round-bend trebles (red on front).

    > His spoon was a 7/8-ounce Big Strike (white).

    > He dropshotted a Zoom Meathead worm (morning dawn).

    > His jig was a 7/16-ounce Jewel Pro Spider in peanut-butter/smoke tipped with a green-pumpkin Zoom Tiny Brush Hog.

    The Bottom Line

  • Main factor in his success – "I really feel that the key to having that big sack came down to two things. One was spending all my time in there, but doing it quietly. Two was I really feel the HydroWave unit made a difference in getting the bigger fish to bite. I'd play with the volume and get it to where those shad would sizzle around the boat – not so much in the morning when it was cool, but in the afternoon. It was freaky."

  • Performance edge – "Probably the key to the win was that 4-pound fish I caught on (day 2). That told me there's some bigger fish in that creek. And that WEC crank led me to that fish."
