Most BassFans have heard the name Bob Izumi. Some grew up knowing it. That's because Bob Izumi is easily the most successful Canadian tournament angler in history, and perhaps the most successful Canadian angler in history period.

His father Joe organized the first-ever Canadian bass tournament, his brother Wayne is also a pro, and Izumi himself fished his first Bassmaster Invitational back in 1982. But through five decades of tournament angling, Izumi had never won a significant event that launched in U.S.

That all changed last weekend when he came out of nowhere and swept the trophy on day 3 of the Thousand Islands Northern EverStart.

The Thousand Islands area is like a second home to Izumi. He won three consecutive Canadian Opens there in the mid-'90s (after his brother won back-to-back), so Saturday's victory was especially sweet, as it marked Izumi's first American win.

"I believe I've fished just over 50 tournaments with FLW and I've been wanted to win one of these for so many years," Izumi said. "I've been close so many times, but I was just never able to finish the deal. And this wasn't one I thought I could win after my day-2 performance – losing some big fish and sitting in 7th. Going into the final day I was really hoping to just move up into the Top 5. Now that it's all said and done, I feel great."

Here's a close look at how he did it.

Practice

Izumi had fished Thousand Island events through spring and summer, including the Canadian Open immediately prior, and thus only practiced for 4 hours for the EverStart. He knew a few things beforehand. Most important, he knew he had to target smallmouths to win. When tournaments first began here, largemouths were the winning fish. Then about a decade and a half ago, mixed bags became the winning formula. Over the past several years, largemouths became an afterthought and now it's all about the brown fish.

So he knew he'd target smallmouths, and his GPS was already chock-full of hot stopping points.

During his 4-hour practice, he went our and ran some spots with his graph and re-checked a prime area he fished in the Canadian Open, which was a small corner of a shoal.

Competition

> Day 1: 5, 17-09
> Day 2: 5, 19-07
> Day 3: 5, 21-01
> Total = 15, 58-01

As it turned out, two other boats also found the end of that shoal.

"One was a friend of mine and the other was a Canadian fellow," Izumi said. "It was only 40 yards wide and we kind of sat there and laughed. I lost one about 2 1/2 and caught three 2-pounders. Two of the co-anglers caught big fish and after about an hour of fishing like that I knew it wasn't going to happen for me. I had 6 pounds in the livewell at 10:30 in the morning and decided to abandon it for good."

At that point, he just started to run places he knew from the past that were Classic "contact spots" – boulders, chunk rock, breaks and other elements where roaming smallmouths would stop.

"The key was, if I didn't graph fish in depths from 24 to 40 feet, I wouldn't drop my line," he noted. "I was under the gun and really wanted to maximize my time."

He caught the majority of his 17 pounds from a single spot that first day and settled into 17th place.

On day 2, he expanded on what he'd found the day before and ran new water as well. He used the same methodology: Watch the graph and only drop to fish he could see. He ended with 19 1/2 pounds, which pushed him to 7th, and using the same pattern he came from behind to win the final day.

Winning Pattern Notes

Izumi dropshotted all 3 days. About what he fished, he said: "They were pretty much all contact spots. I was looking for areas where those fish, if they're roaming around, will come into contact with broken rocks or isolated boulders or something.

"We do sometimes catch smallmouths out in the middle of nowhere on flat bottoms, but those fish are here today and gone in an hour. That's why we always like to look for contact spots. Even though the fish are always grazing and moving, if you find good contact rocks, or a crevice or an underwater bluff, it's a stopping place along the highway for fish. I run two Lowrance HDS units and it still takes hours and days and weeks to find all those little areas."

Winning Gear Notes

Izumi dropshotted with three different rods: Two were 7'2" medium-heavy Shimano Crucials and the other was a 6'10" G. Loomis NRX dropshot rod.

He used Shimano Stradic CI4 3000 and Stella 3000 reels.

His line was 10-pound Berkley Trilene 100% fluorocarbon.

Regarding terminal tackle, he employed 1/2- and 5/8-ounce Ultra Tungsten weights and tied in a swivel to reduce line twist. He made a key change for the final day when he went to a heavier-wire dropshot hook and lost fewer fish.

For baits, he threw a 3" Berkley GULP! Fry (green-pumpkin) and 3" GULP! Minnow (watermelon/pearl).

He also weighed one fish on a goby-style swimbait from Set The Hook Baits.

The Bottom Line

  • Main factor in his success – "I'd say it was perseverance and keeping cool, calm and collected. Even though I hit a lot of spots, I rolled the dice. I wasn't relying on one spot and just went for the gusto. When my dad was alive, he always said, 'Bob, live life with all the gusto.' That's what I try to do in every tournament. Sometimes it works out and as I get older, I try to roll the dice more and more and try to win more."

  • Performance edge – "My Ranger Z521 and Mercury 250XS. Forrest Wood started supporting me back in 1980 and I've been with Mercury since 1979 and MotorGuide since 1979. I've never broken a MotorGuide bracket or trolling motor out on the big water. I use six through-bolts on my deck and I use the ratchet-strap every time I move, even if it's just a mile. I use extra-strong stuff to ratchet and bolt down everything on the Great Lakes, and I've run some mind-boggling seas in my Ranger and never gotten stranded."

    Notable

    > Izumi has now won a bass tournament in five different decades.

    > He noted that tournament competitors did need to call Canadian customs via cell phone upon entering Canadian waters. It went smooth, he added, although cell service was an issue at times.
