As tournament anglers, we all dream about the perfect scenario: A hidden backwater full of bass with not another boat in sight. Chad Brauer got to live every angler's dream last week at the Red River Bassmaster Central Open out of Shreveport, La.

In a tournament where it only took 17 pounds total over 3 days to make a check (30th place), Brauer weighed an astounding 19-pounds-per-day average

and won by a massive 16-pound margin.

He did it with a risky, ultra-skinny run deep into a backwater. He saw only one other boat for a few hours the first day. The rest of the time, he was by himself.

It marked his first BASS win since 1996 and paid him nearly $50,000.

Here's how he did it.

Practice

Brauer fishes the FLW Tour and thus practiced the Red River for the Tour opener in February. That event was subsequently canceled due to high, dangerous water, but before the cancellation was announced, he'd decided where to fish: A normally out-of-the-way backwater in Pool 5 that was in fact quite accessible due to the high water.

When he returned to the Red for the Central open practice last week, he had that spot in mind and decided to check it out again.

"When you're talking about the Red River, there's a lot of fish that live in the backwaters that never make it out to the main river," he said. "They're resident fish that I think live there year-round. You just need to figure out how to catch them.

"The big difference between February and (last week) was the river now is much, much lower. The biggest obstacle to getting back there is being able to navigate. From that big flood, all the sandbars had moved. I had to go quite a ways off the main river through a creek channel to get into the place. In February the channel was 10 or 12 feet deep. This time it was basically 2 to 3 feet and dropping."

The run was especially risky because BASS rules prohibit an angler from leaving the boat in order to advance the boat toward fishable water. In other words, if Brauer got stuck on the way back in and had to exit the boat to free it up, he wouldn't have been able to fish the spot for the rest of the competition day.

"On the practice day when I went up there, I got stuck two times on the main river," he noted. "The second time I got stuck, it took me nearly 2 hours to get my boat freed up. Then once I got near the place, I had to break through some logjams, trees and all that. It took me at least a half a practice day just to figure out how to get in. But once I got in there I got 11 bites in 4 hours, so I knew I could catch fish there."

Competition

> Day 1: 5, 16-15
> Day 2: 5, 18-12
> Day 3: 5, 21-03
> Total = 15, 56-14

Brauer's 3 days of competition were pretty straightforward. He was able to reach the backwater each day, fish for about 4 hours, then make his way back.

He ended day 1 in 3rd, moved into the lead on day 3 and blew the field away on day 4. Although it was over much sooner, his last fish on day 3 was a 6-pounder that cemented his dominance.

Falling water remained a concern throughout competition, and by day 3, he could barely motor through the creek channel.

"Between practice and the last day of the tournament, the water level dropped over 3 feet," Brauer said. "So I went from having a fairly easy time to basically dragging bottom for about a mile to get back there. It was just deep enough for me to get in there the final morning.

"Of course, I did everything I could by taking most stuff out of the boat, then putting what was left up front to make the boat more level. With so much current coming out of that creek, when you idled against it, it sucked your boat down to bottom. Getting out wasn't an issue – the current pushed you out like it pushes a canoe. But getting up there was definitely an issue."

He also made heavy use of his hydraulic jackplate. He raised the motor as high as it would go, trimmed his motor down and that kept the boat a little more level.

He took his time – there was no rush, he said – and also kept a constant eye on his water pressure.

Once he reached his backwater, Brauer threw a plastic and a crank.

Winning Pattern Notes

According to Brauer, once he reached the backwater, bites weren't a given. As the water continued to fall, there was progressively less cover in the water. The fish pulled off the bank and related to deeper cover, but suspended around it at the same depth they inhabited nearer the bank.

Laydown willow-trees were one key.

"You had to keep your baits at the level the fish were at," he said. "If you were on bottom, you wouldn't get bit. The fish were in the upper third of the water column.

"It's not like you could go in there and get 40 bites. The first day I had seven bites, the second day I think I had eight keeper bites, then the third day was a little better – I think I got 10. But I only spent 4 1/2 hours each day fishing in there."

Winning Gear Notes

Brauer primarily threw two baits in the backwater – a Strike King Rodent and Strike King 4S crank.

He caught one fish on a 3/8-ounce Strike King Tour Grade buzzbait (white).

On day 2, he caught a 4 1/2-pounder on a 10" Strike King Thumper worm (black/blue-flake) while he dinked around the launch area killing time before weigh-in. "When I caught that fish, I kind of knew it was my week," he said.

> Rodent gear: 7'4" medium-heavy American Rodsmiths Flipping/Pitching rod, Ardent F700 casting reel, 25-pound Seaguar InvizX fluorocarbon, 4/0 Mustad Big Mouth Tube hook, 3/8-ounce Tru-Tungsten Flippin' weight, Strike King Rodent (black/blue-flake).

> Crankbait gear: 7' medium-action American Rodsmiths rod, Ardent XS1000 casting reel, 20-pound unnamed mono, Strike King 4S (chartreuse/black-back).

The Bottom Line

  • Main factor in his success – "I'd say the biggest factor was having a productive area to myself. There are a lot of great fishing areas on the Red that have quality amounts of fish, but when you split them up among 10 people, you just can't win doing that. That's what's happened to me every time (previously) at the Red: I find what I think is a real good area, but in the tournament there are several boats there. It's hard to have a really good tournament out of an area like that."

  • Performance edge – "I was most nervous about getting in and out without getting stuck, so more than anything it was probably my engine for getting me in and out of there. I drive an Evinrude E-Tec 250HO. I got stuck on sandbars in the main river, then ran through all that muck, but the engine kept running."

    Notable

    > Brauer fishes the FLW Tour and visits Guntersville for the Tour finale in 2 weeks. He figures he needs at least a Top 10 to even have a shot at making the Forrest Wood Cup. "Guntersville's one of my favorite lakes to fish a tournament on, but I like my chances better probably during other times of the year," he said. "The fish will be in some of their deep summer patterns, which is not my specialty. I can do it, but there are a lot of other guys on that tour who are a little better at it than me. But if you can find the right stretch of ledge, and get it for 3 or 4 days, you can end up winning on something like that."
