The Potomac River that splits Virginia and Maryland is an unforgiving, often cruel fishery. Its up-one-day, down-the-next personality has created its share of madness through the years, and today at the Potomac Bassmaster Elite Series, it reared its cruel head once again.

Several pros who whacked fish on day 1 left today's

weigh-in scratching their heads after cataclysmic tumbles. Only five of the Top 12 bettered their weights from yesterday, and some, like Gary Klein, simply dropped off the map.

Despite the juggling weights, the lead remains the same. Skeet Reese backed up his day-1 20-05 with 14-14 and extended his lead from 3 ounces to nearly 2 1/2 pounds.

He also received 5 more bonus points for leading a day and now leads Kevin VanDam in the BASS Angler of the Year (AOY) race by 101 points. The margin was only 20 points when the event began.

Klein, who was 2nd after day 1, caught 7-14 and fell to 14th.

Last year's Potomac winner, Kelly Jordon, caught the same weight as Reese today (14-14) and moved up two spots to 2nd. So today's tournament standings are an exact reversal of last year's final standings, when Jordon beat Reese at the Potomac by a 7-ounce margin.

Britt Myers, who began the day in 7th, caught 15-00 today and moved up to 3rd.

Rookie sensation Derek Remitz is now inside the Top 5. He opened with 17-10, caught 13-15 today, and moved up two spots to 4th.

Veteran and flipping guru Tommy Biffle is the only angler currently in the Top 5 who caught more today than he did yesterday. His 16-14 day-2 limit moved him up 10 spots to 5th.

The field is now cut to the Top 50 pros who'll compete tomorrow. The field further cuts to the Top 12 for the final day.

Here's how the Top 12 looks right now. Total weight is followed by distance from leader in red.

1. Skeet Reese: 35-03
2. Kelly Jordon: 32-14 (2-05)
3. Britt Myers: 31-11 (3-08)
4. Derek Remitz: 31-09 (3-10)
5. Tommy Biffle: 31-05 (3-14)
6. James Niggemeyer: 29-11 (5-08)
7. Randy Howell: 29-09 (5-10)
8. Chris Lane: 29-08 (5-11)
9. Grant Goldbeck: 29-02 (5-17)
10. Steve Kennedy: 29-00 (5-19)
11. Fred Roumbanis: 28-06 (6-13)
12. Kurt Dove: 28-05 (6-14)

Reese remains focused on the Angler of the Year title, but 'It's not over 'til it's over.'

Of the Top 12, Niggemeyer and Dove made the biggest moves today. They each caught 18-plus-pound limits. Niggemeyer improved from 40th, and Dove from 61st. Matt Reed also caught 18-plus pounds and jumped from 64th to 13th.

In addition to Klein, other notable falls were: Casey Ashley (4th to 16th), John Crews (8th to 61st), Matt Amedeo (9th to 28th), Jason Quinn (16th to 45th), and Terry Scroggins (23rd to 49th).

The up/down sacks point to the historic Potomac maxim: Big bags are nice, but the average is more important.

Right now Reese's average is 17 1/2 pounds, but more than a few pros think the winning average will drop to 16 pounds or less over the next 2 days.

Reese Eyes AOY

Reese is in position to win the tournament, but those who've followed his career know that a win at this point would only be gravy.

Reese, first and foremost, wants to win AOY. But VanDam will fish tomorrow, and the threat of a massive KVD comeback looms large.

About today, and the AOY race, Reese said: "I knew I had to go out and do what I normally do – focus on the bites I've been getting and the pattern I've been doing. Kevin's always a threat no matter where he goes.

"(Kevin's) the one guy you don't want to piss off, because he'll come back with a vengeance. So I try to stay on his good side."

He noted he got more bites today than yesterday, but the same quality wasn't there. And actually, his co-angler got the bites instead. "But I backed him up, so good for him," Reese said, then added, "I figured 14 or 15 pounds would keep me near the lead today.

"I'll try to get a few more bonus points out of this one. For some reason the Potomac's treated me well over the last 7, 8, 9 years. I'm very thankful the fish like me here."

About his current lead in the AOY race, he said: "It's not over 'til it's over. I'll be wound up and on pins and needles going into Toho. There's no points lead I'll be comfortable with unless it's 300 points. I think I had a 120-point lead over Kevin going into Grand Lake, and he won.

Kelly Jordon's only bites came first thing this morning and in the last half-hour.

"But I'll take every point I can get right now against him and the rest of the field. I've had an amazing year. I've pulled some rabbits out of the hat. Yesterday was one of them. When it's your time, it's your time. Someday I'll probably fall hard, but I'm enjoying the ride right now. The season's not over and I won't be content until I get the AOY title."

2nd: Jordon Both Late and Early

Jordan's day-1 key was his morning bite, but it was largely a bust today. So he scrambled, "picked off" a few late fish, and moved up to 2nd.

As noted, he won here last year by 7 ounces. "I hope that doesn't happen again – I'd like to win it by a lot more than that," he said. "But heck, we're only halfway through. It's going to be a long tournament, and there's a lot of fishing left to do.

"I'm just happy to be in a position where I have a chance, because it was tough today. I worked hard. It was way harder than I expected it to be."

He only caught two fish off his morning spot – a 3 1/4 and a 2 1/2. He didn't catch another fish until the final 30 minutes, when he caught four and filled out his limit. "That was frustrating," he noted. "But I stayed on my big-fish deal. I think they just didn't bite today. I think they're still there though. They haven't left."

He added: "I have some other stuff, so I need to make a decision on what to do tomorrow. I have some stuff that's good on another tide, and we'll start getting that tomorrow. I'll just try to stay on my feet and stay nimble. This is such a dynamic place to fish. It changes all the time."

5th: Biffle a Little Surprised

Biffle's historically done well at the Potomac, and he made the Top 12 cut here last year. He had another decent practice this time, but he's still a little surprised to be 5th right now.

"I'm liking it," he said of his position. "I didn't expect to be doing quite as good as I'm doing, because it's been a slow, tough bite for me. But every day you go out, you don't know what to expect."

One kink in his fishing right now is the tides. They've changed since practice. While he's fishing the same general area he fished in practice, he's not "getting them the same way."

Tommy Biffle would like to have a 20-pound sack, but consistency's his major goal right now.

"I'm just keying on a couple of areas and trying to be in the right tide at the right time," he said. "It seems to be working, so that's what I'm going to do.

"I'm doing what I like – just maybe not the way I'd exactly like if I had my druthers. But there's more grass here than I've ever seen from anytime I've been here."

About what it'll take to win, he said: "It would be good to have a 20-pound sack, but I think if I can hang around 16 or 17 pounds a day, that could probably do it. I just want to be consistent."

8th: Lane Seeks Consistency

Lane, a Florida pro, is a big-time grass fan. He's right in the mats doing what he loves best, and like Biffle, he wants consistency first, big sacks second.

"I want to be consistent, consistent, consistent," Lane said. "This place is known for going from 20 pounds to 8 pounds, and from 8 pounds to 20 pounds. I'd love to catch 20 pounds, but I figured 13 pounds a day would make the Top 12, and I should be pretty close with that assumption. Consistency always pays off in the long run."

He also noted that the Potomac fishes a lot like his home lakes in Florida, except here, tidal influence is the wildcard. "You have to play the tides just right. I kind of learned a little bit more each day. I kind of got dialed in on it yesterday.

"I didn't get any huge bites today, and I haven't gotten my big bite for the tournament yet," he added. "I hope tomorrow will be that day I get it."

On whether he thinks he can win, he said: "I think I can. I really do. I saw those big bags yesterday, and I saw a few today, but all in all, it's dropping. I caught a pound less today and I moved up. So I think if I can get a couple of key bites, and get them in the boat – which is key here – I can win this thing."

61st: Crews Makes No Excuses

Crews entered the tournament at 37th in the AOY points, which meant he was one spot away from a berth in the Bassmaster Classic. But he weighed just 4-06 today and fell from 8th to 61st.

Not only did that drop him out of the cut and cost him $10,000, but it also put him further away from the Classic.

"I basically lived and died on one place," he said. "I knew I just needed to catch a couple fish to make the cut, and I finally left with about 2 hours of fishing time left. I was only able to scrounge up two more little ones. I knew I needed one more fish to make the Top 50. I wasn't able to do it.

"I have no excuses – there are no excuses," he added. "And you know what, I love to read when guys bomb on the second day after they do good on the first day, and they have some big, elaborate scheme and list of excuses a mile long. I'm so tired of it. I just wish people would take responsibility for their own actions, and today it was all me."

About the Classic berth, he said: "I was the bubble-boy before this event, and I'm probably a couple places under the bubble now. But at least I'm not totally out of it going into the last tournament.

"All it takes is one decent tournament and I'm right back in it. That's what I have to focus on. I can't think about this last tournament (the Potomac) too much more. Usually I give myself a day, and when that's over, I go on to the next event."

Notable

> Day 2 stats – 107 anglers, 77 limits (11 fewer than yesterday), 15 fours, 9 threes, 2 twos, 1 one, 3 zeroes (2 more than yesterday).

> Ashley, who dropped 12 spots to 16th, said: "I had a mat I found in practice that was full of fish. I pulled up yesterday morning, caught 18 pounds, and left it alone. I went back today and caught one fish. I couldn't get another bite. I stuck with it for 2 hours then left. It just didn't happen."

> Matt Sphar caught identical weights both days (13-06) and made the cut in 19th. "I struggled this morning, then right at the end I got one last decent fish," he said. "I'm just happy I made the cut."

> Davy Hite reportedly had 15 pounds of fresh tuna delivered last night.
