Tim Horton slammed a massive 24-pound limit today to take the lead in the Bassmaster Elite Series event at Lake Champlain. Added to yesterday's impressive 21 pounds, it gives him a humongous 45-14 over 2 days – effectively a full-day advantage over many in the field who are averaging 15 to 16 pounds per day.

In fact, just his weight today was more than 33 guys had over the first 2 days.

A stormy morning gave way to a sunny afternoon, but the ride south to Ticonderoga was a rough one for the pros who made the run to the grassbeds. Coming back wasn't any picnic either, and lightning forced some to take shelter at mid-day.

Day-1 leader Steve Kennedy weighed 17-14 today and slipped to 2nd with 39-04. Instead of having a 4-ounce lead, he is now a whopping 6-10 behind Horton.

Fred Roumbanis is 3rd with 37-04, while Steve Daniel jumped to 4th with 35-01. Rick Clunn weighed a heavy 18-10 bag of smallmouths today to move up to 5th with 34-04.

The rest of the Top 12 looks like this:

6. Scott Rook: 34-00
7. Paul Hirosky: 33-15
8. Brent Chapman: 33-14
9. Yusuke Miyazaki: 33-07
10. Britt Meyers: 33-01
10. Skeet Reese: 33-01
12. Tommy Biffle: 32-14

Rookie Bryan Hudgins managed only 9-06 today and dropped from a tie for 4th to 57th. Others who fell out of the Top 12 included Davy Hite (4th to 38th), Denny Brauer (6th to 43rd), Kevin Wirth (7th to 29th), Edwin Evers (8th to 13th), Takahiro Omori (9th to 32nd) and Peter Thliveros (10th to 22nd).

They were replaced by Clunn, Hirosky, Chapman, Miyazaki, Meyers, Reese, and Biffle.

Just missing the Top 50 cut were Matt Amedeo and rookie Marty Robinson, both with 28-02 (only 1 ounce out).

After tomorrow the field will be cut to the Top 12, who will fish for the win on Sunday. Weights are carried over each day for a 4-day combined total.

Horton Laid Off Early

Horton not only had the biggest bag of the day, he probably also had the big fish. But pulled the wrong one from his bag.

"I had one that my scale said was 5-14, and I must have pulled the wrong one to weigh, but that's okay," he said. (The official big-bass award went to Fred Roumbanis, who weighed a 5-07).

He fished the same still undisclosed area as yesterday, but got a few bigger bites. His smallest fish was 4-06, and all were largemouths from the grass.

"I fished the same stuff and same techniques and lures as yesterday," he said. "I had everything I weighed by 9:00 and just practiced after that, but I didn't find anything to help. I didn't want to overfish my area.

"When you have a 4-day tournament you can really mess up by catching too much the first couple of days, and I made a conscious effort not to do that."

He had to adapt a bit this morning.

"The fish move a lot here like all grass lakes, and you have to keep re-finding them each day," he noted. "Today the majority of the fish I weighed in came about a half-mile off (from where I caught them yesterday). I think it was the same school.

Horton is fishing quite a ways off the bank, so he hopes for calm air tomorrow.

"You have to look for what they're relating to when they move. The wind is what moves them, since they want the bait blown into them. Then you have to look for the bends and cuts in the grassline.

"Tomorrow, hopefully it'll fall into place again," he added. "It's supposed to be calm tonight and tomorrow morning, and that is key. It helps with boat control, and I'm fishing a good bit off the bank.

"I'd really like to find another school if I can before Sunday. I think around 49 to 50 pounds will be the (Top 12) cut, but with these fishermen I'd like to build more of a cushion. They can catch them."

5th: Clunn Committed to Smallies

Clunn improved from 33rd to 5th today on the strength of a stout 18-10 bag of smallmouths, giving him 34-04 over 2 days.

"The difference was staying on them longer today," he said. "Yesterday I let the largemouth sidetrack me for 4 hours.

"Going in, I intended to fish strictly for smallmouths. I knew the lake was 2 feet low, and I knew Ticonderoga would be a factor if they could get there. But last year I spent all my practice there, then couldn't go because of the wind. I wasn't tuned into the smallmouth, and you have to commit to them to make it work."

So what's working so well for him? It's a secret.

"What I'm doing is so unique for smallmouth that I don't want to let the world know about it yet," he said. "The smallmouth bite this year is the best I've ever seen here. I know it's my technique. I'm sure it's off for some guys using the usual techniques.

"I can fish behind others and catch them, and catch bigger ones. If you figure out something unique, that's really what it takes.

"But I can't win with smallmouth if the largemouth guys can get to their fish," he added. "I could catch a 20-pound bag tomorrow if I can get everything in the boat. I did in practice."

He thinks his decision to fish for largemouths for part of yesterday cost him 2 to 4 pounds.

"It's difficult to be in tune with both species at the same time, and switch back and forth. You really have to commit to one or the other. You might catch the other while fishing for one, and that's okay."

8th: Chapman Remembers Lesson

Last year Brent Chapman had a horrible FLW Tour tournament here, then turned around and had a strong Elite Series event.

"I learned that I'm a better largemouth fisherman than smallmouth fisherman, so I didn't even make a cast at a smallmouth this year," he said.

He was in a three-way tie for the last cut spot after day 1, but leapt up to inside the Top 12 cut today at 8th place. "I finally got the right bites," he said. His bag today was 19 pounds even – over 4 pounds better than yesterday.

"Early in the morning I'm catching them on a Zoom Super Fluke, then later on a Terminator jig – the same as last year but in different cover. The fish were in the willows last year (during high water), but they're farther out in the bays now.

"I'm getting about what I thought I would, judging from practice. I got some quality 4-pound bites today. I caught all the fish out of one area."

His primay spot is about a 35-minute run north of the launch.

"I'm getting a limit and then leaving, trying to find a few bigger bites out farther in the bay. I'm catching fish around 3 to 4 feet deep.

"They caught some good fish out of there, but there's definitely enough to repeat tomorrow. It's not too much pressure. It's still good for a quick limit.

"But I need some wind tomorrow," he added. "It was too calm and slick yesterday."

12th: Biffle Fishing Alone

Biffle moved up from 29th to the all-important 12th spot today. He caught 17 pounds even, after 15-14 yesterday, giving him a total of 32-14.

"My biggest today was about 4 pounds, and the others were mostly 3's," he said. "I saw some bigger ones swimming. I probably could have had a 20-pound day in practice, but the bigger ones haven't bit the last two days.

"I need another 15 to16 pounds to make Top 12 cut tomorrow. I'm fishing some grass and some other stuff, but on a different end of the lake from last year. I'm going south. The north end is really good, but they buoyed it off this year and that messed it up."

As for baits, he's mixing it up a bit.

Rick Clunn is locked in on a strong smallmouth pattern.

"I'm throwing some topwaters and some target baits. The fish are pretty well staying where they've been all week. There are so many here you can fish the same spot day after day – it's that good a lake."

The wind has not been helping him much, though.

"My back is killing me," he said. "It's not bad (making the long run) but it's just rough."

Once he gets there, he's had his spot to himself.

21st: Rojas Roaming

Dean Rojas moved the wrong way today, dropping from 15th to 21st with a 31-13 total.

"The main thing here is timing," he said. "They're zigging when I'm zagging, and we cross sometimes. I'm getting closer to figuring it out, but the weather is so crazy. It goes from slick and hot, to windy and rainy, to sunny again.

"You have to keep adjusting and gearing up for different things. It's frustrating but fun too, since you're fishing under the gun and you have to go on instinct.

"I'm mixing it up, fishing three different patterns," he added. "I'm trying to catch 15 to 17 pounds a day to stay close, and if a 20-pound limit presents itself, that's great."

He's fishing on the north end in 6 feet of water or less, targeting shoreline tules, pads, mats – green stuff for green fish.

"I'm using the frog some, and also a prototype topwater from Northland Tackle. It's actually outperforming the frog right now, which is rare. And I'm also flipping, using another Northland Tackle Dean Rojas series bait. Both of those are being introduced at ICAST this week.

"Tomorrow I'll do the same thing and go for big fish and try to make it into the Top 12. I'm only about a pound out and one good fish can make the difference."

Notable

> Day 2 stats – 108 anglers, 104 limits, 1 four, 2 threes, 1 two.

> Skeet Reese, in 10th today, is ahead of Kevin VanDam (18th) in the tournament, but going in he was 62 points behind VanDam in the Angler of the Year (AOY) race.

> VanDam on smallmouths: "They cover a lot of water, they move around a lot – they're a lot like me."

> Guy Eaker on his 4-fish, 8-02 last-place finish: "I fished so bad in this tournament that my wife could beat me, and she don't even fish."

> BassFan Big Stick John Murray described how fast and furious the fishing on Champlain can be. "I had a limit in 8 minutes. I had two fish on the same lure (a double) twice, and my partner had two on at once too."

> Biffle's 24-year-old daughter practiced with him. "I brought my daughter and the green light was on and she whacked them," he said. "There aren't many places you can just catch what you want in practice and not worry about hurting them."
