It was a long wait between FLW Tour Top 10s for Jack Wade.

The Tennessean fished the Tour during the first 4 seasons of its existence (1996-99) and made the Top 10 twice – the latter at Kerr Lake in 1997. He spent several years fishing primarily Bassmaster events before he joined the inaugural FLW Series last year and finished 22nd in the points.

The veteran caught a 16-14 sack today at the Potomac River, and it gave him the lead at the cut with a 2-day total of 37-13. That was one spot higher than where he'd started the day.

Florida's Bobby Lane also bagged 16-14 today, and he moved up one spot to 2nd with 36-13. Arkasas' Mark Davis, the day-1 leader, caught 15-06 and fell two spots to 3rd with 36-10.

Florida's Sandy Melvin caught 20-08 today and climbed 33 spots to 4th with 35-05. Arkansas' Ray Scheide made an even bigger jump – from 62nd to 5th – with a day-best 21-06 bag for a 35-04 total.

The rest of the Top 10 looks like this:

6. Ken Wick: 34-14
7. (tie) Jerry Williams: 34-00
7. (tie) Chris Baumgardner: 34-00
9. (tie) David Dudley: 33-03
9. (tie) Shad Schenck: 33-03

North Carolina's Chris Baumgardner and Virginia's David Dudley joined Melvin and Scheide as newcomers to the Top 10. Baumgardner caught 18-10 to vault from 32nd to 7th and Dudley whacked 20-07 to climb from 87th to a tie for 9th.

Falling out were Chris McCall (7th to 56th with 8-08 today), Thomas LaVictoire (8th to 15th, 11-15), Mark Pack (9th to 65th, 8-03) and Randy Blaukat (10th to 87th, 6-02).

The sky was overcast for the second straight day, but the morning topwater bite might not have been quite as strong because the tide was still on the rise during the first hour of fishing. Many long-stick experts fared extremely well, as evidenced by the 20-pound bags flipped up by Melvin, Scheide and Dudley.

The Top 10 field should see at least some sun over the weekend, which could push the fish tighter to the Potomac's omnipresent grass and make flipping the only way to go.

Weights were zeroed after today's weigh-in, and the winner will be determined by highest combined weight over the final 2 days.

Wade Stayed Patient

Wade went more than 3 hours without a fish today, but he knew it was just a matter of time.

"It took me until 10:30 to catch one, but then I caught five in about an hour," he said. "Then I went to another area and culled the first one I'd caught with a 5-something.

"After that, I knew I was probably in (the cut)."

He caught seven keepers for the second straight day, but didn't get a bite where he'd caught four of his weigh-in fish the day before. He also failed to find any topwater action after catching one of his best fish on a frog on day 1.

Florida's Bobby Lane made his first Top 10 since early in the 2005 season.

"I'm sure some guys caught a few that way, but I couldn't get one to come up."

He hasn't won a pro-level tournament since the 1978 Bassmaster Florida Invitational on the St. Johns River, and he's amped about the opportunity that's in front of him.

"It's exciting. Hopefully I can keep catching them, and I'm sure I'll be flipping most of the time."

He said his co-angler missed a huge fish today, but he'll try to get it some stage time tomorrow.

"It's about 6 or 7 pounds, and I know right where it's at."

2nd: Good Move by Lane

Lane had to change locales today when the area where he'd caught most of his 19-15 sack on day 1 failed to produce.

"I started in that same creek, but I didn't catch a fish," he said. "So I went to my backup place and caught a limit, and when the tide got right I caught some good ones."

He went through 10 keepers for the day, and three of those were right around 4 pounds each.

"I think I can catch them pretty good flipping (over the weekend), and I've got a spot where I should be able to get one or two on a Pop-R."

This is his first Top 10 since he made three straight to start his rookie year in 2005, so he's stoked about that.

"It's been awhile, and I feel good about it. Everything finally came together for me.

"I've made it this far, so the only thing left is the cardboard," he said, in reference to the oversized stage check presented to the winner.

3rd: Davis Concerned

Davis caught another good sack from the same area he exploited en route to the day-1 lead. But he said the fishing was more difficult today and might get really tough tomorrow.

"I'm a little worried about the pleasure boats that'll be out there," he said. "When you're fishing the main river in the grass, you need clear water, and those boats can be really detrimental to that.

"I'm not talking about ski boats – these are 30-, 40- 50-foot yachts. You can't get around them and you end up ramping off their huge wakes, and they can turn that water to chocolate."

He caught seven keepers today and abandoned his primary spot at 10:00.

"Once I had 15 pounds, I knew I had plenty to make the cut. I went looking for some new water and I didn't find any, but I've still got plenty of fish to go to that I haven't fished in the tournament yet.

"Now whether those will pan out, I don't know."

Sandy Melvin has had a tough year, but he feels right at home in the Potomac's grass.

4th: A Boost for Melvin

Melvin's best finish in the previous four events was 91st, but he's in his comfort zone now.

"Being a Florida guy, I'm comfortable fishing grass," he said. "It's been a rough year – I've been struggling at all those deep lakes."

After practice, he didn't think this tournament would end up any better for him than the others.

"I had a terrible practice. A friend of mine had a great practice, but he struggled yesterday, so I decided to go back to what I was doing, and I caught them.

"It's been unseasonably cool, and I think that's affected a lot of the fish and messed up a lot of patterns."

He's targeting grass with soft plastics, and it's a pattern he thinks will hold up through the weekend.

"I feel confident I can get some bites – it's just a matter of getting the right bites. But I'm using a technique that's good for big fish, and I'm going to stick with it."

5th: Scheide Finds a Hot Spot

Scheide, who made his second Top 10 in a row following an 8th-place showing at Beaver, compiled most of his day-best bag from an area he hadn't fished in either practice or competition.

"I didn't have any idea I could catch that," he said. "I was sharing water with a lot of the leaders yesterday and I had the bites to catch 18 or 19 pounds, but I went back today and couldn't get it going.

"We never got a low tide yesterday, so I scrambled around and figured a few things out, then I expanded on that this morning. I had the new area I found all to myself, and I know where there's a lot of other places like it."

He caught 15 keepers today, and each of the fish he took to the stage weighed about 4 1/2 pounds.

"I can say that I'm targeting mats, and because of the high tide, the mats in the bays never developed," he said. "But the new place I found had them."

Ray Scheide's 21-06 bag was the biggest of the day.

If that spot doesn't produce as well tomorrow, he has other stuff that he has confidence in.

"I've got three areas going with three different techniques, so I've got a backup for my backup. I feel like I'm in a pretty strong position."

56th: McCall's Area Gives Out

Texan Chris McCall dropped 49 spots today with a four-fish, 8 1/2-pound bag.

"I think there were just too many fish caught off my area yesterday," he said. "There were quite a few guys around who caught 14 or 15 pounds (on day 1).

"Then my best backup area didn't produce, and I lost a couple of fish that would have at least gotten me (a $10,000 check)."

He caught his 17-15 bag on day 1 primarily by flipping a Gambler Flappy Daddy in the grass. He also threw a 1/2-ounce Santone Lures spinnerbait and a 1/2-ounce Gambler Ninja Spin.

Notable

> Day 2 stats – 200 anglers, 108 limits (11 fewer than yesterday), 31 fours, 23 threes, 17 twos, 9 ones, 12 zeroes (eight more than yesterday).

> Minnesota's Jim Moynagh, who's alternated Top 25 finishes and triple-digit bombs all year, was first out of the cut.

> BassFan Big Stick Jay Yelas finished 19th with 30-04 – the first time he's been outside the Top 6 in four tournaments. Still, he'll extend his lead in the Angler of the Year (AOY) race to 26 points with one event remaining. To read his competition report, click here to go On Tour With The BassFan Big Sticks.

> Shinichi Fukae came into the tournament 3rd in the AOY race and was in danger of falling out of contention with a 107th-place showing on day 1. But he caught 18-13 today to climb all the way to 18th, and he'll displace Andy Morgan (67th) in the No. 2 spot on the points list.
