How small is Arkansas' Beaver Lake? Not too small, but pack 201 boats on it and it's more like a bathtub than a sprawling heartland impoundment.

And for a perfect example of the crowded conditions, look no further than the leaderboard at today's Wal-Mart Open (Beaver FLW Tour).

Jay Yelas leads the Top 10 cut after 2 days, and Andy Montgomery led yesterday. The two are catching nearly all their fish from a small dock – Yelas to one side, Montgomery to the other.

Yesterday, the fish bit on Montgomery's side and he weighed 13-11. Yelas basically struck out on the dock and scrambled the rest of the day.

Today, the fish bit on Yelas' side and he weighed 12-15, which brought his 2-day total to 23-10. Montgomery only caught four fish there, weighed 7-02, and never caught another keeper. He made the cut in 3rd with 20-13.

Yelas' lead margin doesn't matter – weights are zeroed tomorrow. The biggest question, of course, is whether the fish on that deadly dock can hold up for two boats. If only one of them had found it, it would almost certainly have been the winning spot.

Andy Morgan caught an 8-03 limit today and made the cut in 2nd with 21-02. He began the day in that position.

Overall, four new faces made the Top 10.

Glenn Browne caught 9-04 today and moved up six spots to make the cut in 4th.

J.R. Beehler, with 9-09 today, improved nine spots and made the cut in 5th.

The other three who moved into the cut were Jacob Powroznik (12th to 8th), Alfred Williams (116th to 9th), and Chad Morgenthaler (34th to 10th).

Matt Herren was first out of the cut – he finished 1 ounce back in 11th.

Tom Monsoor (4th to 21st), Alvin Shaw (5th to 40th), John Sappington (6th to 12th), Tony Couch (7th to 13th), and Mark Davis (8th to 33rd) all dropped out of the cut and won't be fishing tomorrow.

Against the deadly dock, Morgan's hung strong with a run-and-gun approach, but his bite's tough to peg. What should work to his advantage, though, is 191 fewer boats on the water tomorrow, which is a big plus because he plans to settle into a single area and camp tomorrow.

Dwayne Horton's got a strong smallmouth spot that's working, but it's only a small area, and may (or may not) peter out the next 2 days.

Everyone else has bits and pieces of good things happening, so it should be ultra-tight the next 2 days, unless one of the Top 10 lands that crucial 4-pounder (like the one Morgan caught yesterday).

One of those, and it could be a done deal before the scales even open.

Yelas Hits Triple

Today marked Yelas' third FLW Tour Top 10 in a row.

"What a deal, and I'm even leading this thing," he said. "All the fish were on my side of the dock today – that's about as complicated as it gets. That's where I caught all my fish. I had them all in 45 minutes this morning, and (Montgomery) struggled over on his side.

"It turns out that it's really the best spot on the lake. He's in 3rd, I'm in 1st."

Yelas added that it's a shad-spawn pattern, so it's an early bite that fades quickly. That also means the bass are moving in circles around the dock, so it's the luck of the draw which side they'll be on.

"Other than that one spot, it's really tough," he added. "I think I caught six or seven keepers today, and I fished pretty hard. I kind of pre-fished the rest of the day, and I threw a swimbait trying to catch a big one."

On whether the spot can hold up for two anglers, he said: "It definitely hurts both of us, and it could keep either one of us from winning. There's only 10 guys on the lake (tomorrow), with two on the same dock. I mean, come on.

"I know it sounds kind of funny, but it's just the reality of it – how good of a spot it is."

About his third cut in a row, he said: "It's good to kind of have the tide coming back in. It comes in and goes out – you have highs and lows – but it's been good to feel a little momentum on my side again."

2nd: Morgan Stoked

Andy Morgan finally made a cut at Beaver after a decade of trying.

"I feel great about making the Top 10," he said. "Beaver usually kicks my butt every year. I think my best finish here has been a tie for 19th, so it feels good to come to the lake and slide in there."

He didn't quit fishing today, and continued to "bounce around" to look at different stuff. At about noon, he said, he got a feel for how tough the fishing actually is.

"I had 7 pounds, and figured I'd probably make the cut, and culled one to get up to 8 pounds. I fished hard, but I didn't learn a whole lot. So I plan to go and lay into one area the next 2 days and milk it as much as I can.

Andy Morgan ran hard the last 2 days, but he plans to camp tomorrow.

"With 190 boats being off the lake, I think the chances are a lot better to catch a bigger bag. I should have the opportunity to catch a decent bag of fish. Whether or not I land them, we'll have to see."

He noted that he thinks 22 pounds will probably win, but "anyone with 20 will have a good shot at it."

3rd: Montgomery Makes it in Front

Montgomery's a rookie, and this is his first cut this year. But he won't be in unfamiliar territory tomorrow. He made four Tour cuts last year as a co-angler.

"I feel pretty good," he said. "I think I've got as good a chance as anybody. I've got one place (the deadly dock) that's probably as good as it gets on this lake."

He does have the same concerns as Yelas – that they could hurt each other. "I really think if one of us had it by ourselves, that guy would probably be the guy who won the tournament," he said.

"I don't think I'll be too nervous (tomorrow)," he added. "I fished (after the cut) four times last year, so I think that'll help me not be nervous."

He didn't win any of those events last year, but finished 2nd at both Kentucky Lake and the FLW championship.

4th: Browne Caught Wacky Bag

Browne won the Okeechobee Southeastern Stren to kick off the year, but this was his first Tour cut of the season.

"It feels pretty good," he said. "I get to go out and go fishing again tomorrow. I'm catching some decent quality, as far as Beaver Lake goes. I've been catching quite a few in the 1 1/2- to 2-pound range. And I culled a nice fish each day.

"And as far as my record goes, I'm pretty ecstatic, because I've never done well here."

His bag was pretty remarkable, too, because it included two largemouths, a meanmouth (smallmouth/spot cross), a true spot, and a smallmouth.

"I don't discriminate," he joked. "They were all together. It's just that the area of the lake I'm fishing has them all in it."

He added that he's catching all his fish on a Gambler Giggy Head paired with a 5" Berkley Wacky Crawler, but he was non-committal about his shot at winning.

"If things fall in line, I think I can go catch 7 to 9 pounds, and if I can get a lucky good bite here or there, and maybe 9 or 10 pounds, maybe (I can win). I really think somebody who catches 9 1/2 to 10 pounds a day is going to be the winner, and that might be high."

9th: Williams Whacked 'em

Williams made the most notable jump of the day – 116th to 19th with a 13 1/2-pound limit.

About his emotions immediately after weigh-in, he said: "I feel grateful, thankful, very blessed. I fished real hard, got the bites, and didn't lose anything this time. So I'm blessed to be able to come this far against this caliber of fishermen."

He noted that at launch, he did feel he could make the cut, based on what he saw the day before. "I knew if I could catch five, I'd be looking at the 12-pound range and could possibly get in the cut.

"This is actually the first day I caught the fish off this group. The big ones showed up today."

16th: Dudley Okay, But 'In Knots'

After a weak day 1 that left him in 55th, David Dudley (fishing's "Million Dollar Man") moved up to finish 16th with 10-02 today.

"I didn't understand yesterday," he said. "I caught plenty of fish but had 7 1/2 pounds (yesterday).

"All I can say is I'm happy with the way I finished. I don't think I could have done anything different – I just didn't get that 2 1/2-pound kicker. So I'm okay with it, but inside, my stomach's just in absolute knots. I hate losing. I hate not being in the Top 10. That's eating at me."

21st: Monsoor Happy and Disappointed

As noted, Wisconsin's Tom Monsoor began the day in 4th, but caught two fish for 4-07 today and fell to finish 21st.

The problem, he said, was his fish moved. He wasn't locked onto a single thing, but that didn't matter – all his fish hopped a train. That left him feeling baffled.

About his finish, he said: "I feel good about it, but I'm really disappointed they moved. There's no reason I could see for them to move. There's just no excuse for them moving like that this time of year.

"The fish all left every place I was fishing. I fished suspended fish yesterday, and fished on the bank – shallow, deep, suspended, everything. They were just gone."

In the end, he decided to run banks in hopes he'd run into a few – which worked for some today – but he struck out.

He's dug himself a pretty disastrous hole too. He came into the event at 152nd in the points, so a Cup berth is a stretch. But he's not giving up.

"You never know," he said. "But I've never had a year this bad in my life."

167th: Blaukat Bombed

For the second tournament in a row, Randy Blaukat committed to a big-bite pattern, then got killed by the weather. Last week at Dardanelle, he committed to the river, which blew out with muddy water while the lower lake turned on. Here, he committed to a shallow-water floating-worm pattern, but the cold front turned his chewers into nippers.

His 2-day total was 6-11.

"I had the bites to make the cut, but they'd just tear the worm in half," he said.

"I'm extremely disappointed, no doubt," he added. "It's the type of deal that basically puts me in the position where I have to fish strictly for big ones in the last two tournaments. I'll need pretty high finishes after this blowout here (to make the Cup).

"You can always look back and think, 'What could I have done different?' But when you make a commitment, and don't vary from that, you're apt to have tournaments like I did the last 2 weeks."

Notable

> Day 2 stats – 201 anglers, 91 limits (20 fewer than yesterday), 32 fours, 30 threes, 22 twos, 15 ones, 11 zeroes.

> Mark Davis was inside the cut yesterday with 11 pounds, but he's headed home with a 15-09, 2-day total and 33rd-place finish. "I fished left today," he said. "I had it going pretty good yesterday, but the fish will do that here this time of year. You get kind of locked in, but they pulled out and suspended. They shouldn't have, because the water temperature actually fell."

> Jim Moynagh never did believe in that "banana in the boat" superstition. But after today, he does have a new superstition – never let a Canada goose in your boat. "Once one got in my boat this morning, I never caught another bass," he said.

> Chris Koester of Rogers, Ark., leads the co-angler division with 10 fish for 15-11.
