The fact that Oklahoma's Terry Butcher caught 10 pounds less than he did yesterday, but still leads, is testament to the strength of his 26-03 opening bag.

But it also bears out the general trend today at the Guntersville Bassmaster Elite Series in Alabama – that the weights today were up, down, and all over the place.

Some anglers, like Kelly Jordon, soared up by nearly 30 spots, while others, like Pete Ponds, fell by that much or more.

Butcher's 16-06 today was just enough to retain the lead, but his 3 1/2-pound advantage dwindled to just 11 ounces.

That's partly because of his lighter sack, and partly because Jason Quinn roped 19-04 today, to follow yesterday's 22-10. He retained his 2nd-place position, but as noted, he's drawn dangerously close to Butcher.

Terry Scroggins and Kevin VanDam traded spots today. Scroggins caught 20-01 and moved up to 3rd, while VanDam caught 19-10 and slipped to 4th.

Yusuke Miyazaki, with 20-12 today and 39-02 total, rounds out the Top 5.

Here's a full look at the anglers who made today's Top 12 cut. Total weight is followed by distance from leader in red. Note that day 1 of competition was cancelled due to weather, so the best 3-day combined weight determines the winner.

1. Terry Butcher: 42-09
2. Jason Quinn: 41-14 (0-11)
3. Terry Scroggins: 41-03 (1-06)
4. Kevin VanDam: 40-14 (1-11)
5. Yusuke Miyazaki: 39-02 (3-07)
6. Mark Tucker: 37-12 (4-13)
7. Kelly Jordon: 37-00 (5-09)
8. Shaw Grigsby, Jr.: 35-12 (6-13)
9. Kota Kiriyama: 35-09 (7-00)
10. Ben Matsubu: 35-01 (7-08)
11. Tim Horton: 34-11 (7-14)
12. Alton Jones: 34-06 (8-03)

The weights, obviously, are packed tighter than five 8-pounders in a livewell.

And it's the ultimate cliché, yes, but here ti goes: Everyone inside the Top 12 has a legitimate shot tomorrow. The key for those at 6th and below is two big bites, while for those inside the Top 5, a 20-pound bag is paramount.

Everyone inside the Top 5 has caught 20-plus at least once to far, and to win, they likely need to do it again tomorrow.

Those who moved into the Top 12 cut today included: Jordon (36th to 7th), Ben Matsubu (31st to 10th), Tim Horton (24th to 11th) and last year's runner-up Alton Jones (24th to 12th).

The following anglers fell out of the cut: Ponds (5th to 45th), Boyd Duckett (8th to 33rd), Ish Monroe (9th to 18th), and Morizo Shimizu (11th to 14th).

Mike Wurm caught a stout 22-05 sack today, but finished 2 ounces behind the cut in 13th.

The weather today was mostly sunny, with some late clouds and wind. Tomorrow's forecast calls for more sunny skies, with winds from the north-northwest at 11 mph.

Butcher Struck Out at Dawn

Butcher's most important dynamic is the morning bite. He caught 22 pounds with it yesterday, then upgrade later. Today his morning spot produced just one keeper.

"I had a tough day," he said. "I needed my early bite to work, and it didn't work at all today.

"I still feel good about it though. I'd rather have the lead than be behind."

About what went wrong, he said: "The shad were there this morning. Why they didn't bite, I don't know. I went to my backup plan, and caught my 16-06 doing that. Hopefully I'll get a little help out of my (morning) topwater bite tomorrow."

Jason Quinn feels he needs closure – 'I need to win one of these things, for myself.'

He noted that he's not thinking about who's chasing him – winning names like Scroggins, VanDam, and Jordon. Instead, he's fishing against the fish.

"I need about 22 pounds tomorrow to have a real good shot at winning this thing," he added. "With anything less than that, it's probably not going to happen."

He entered the event dead-last in the Elite Series Angler of the Year (AOY) race. About what a win tomorrow would mean for him, he said: "After the year I've been having, it would be great – phenomenal. Not just financially, but confidence-wise too.

"This has already helped my confidence, but it would be great."

2nd: Quinn Excited

Quinn's 11 ounces back, but at Guntersville, call it dead-even.

"I think I'm in good shape," he said. "I actually had to run around a little to catch what I caught today. I couldn't catch them on structure like I had been.

"I went to my backup stuff and caught them all on that. So I actually have two things going, and they're both really good."

He'll start back on the river channel tomorrow, even though that bite fizzled today, because "you can catch 20 pounds pretty easy out there. And if I'm consistent, I think with a 20-pound bag, I can win it."

About his emotions right now, he said: "I'm really excited. Like I said yesterday, I wanted to turn my season around points-wise.

Terry Scroggins said he moved around today and fished a lot of water.

"I'm not going out to fish for a 14- or 15-pound bag tomorrow. I'm going for a 20- or 25-pound bag. I might catch nothing, but the worst I can finish is 12th."

About what a win would mean for him, he said: "Career-wise, I have good sponsors, and good family support – everything's in my direction – but I need closure. I need to win one of these things, for myself."

4th: VanDam Working

VanDam followed up 21-04 with 19-10 today. He's the No. 1 ranked angler in the BassFan World Rankings presented by Tru-Tungsten, but has yet to win an Elite Series event.

Last year at Guntersville, he also went into the final day in the 4th-place position, but 4-05 behind the leader. This time, he trails the leader by just 1-11.

"I'm having to work real hard out there," he said. "It looks like it's easy, but it's not."

He added that he's "fishing for quality bites, for sure," and that he's around a lot of fish. "But a lot of the other guys are too.

"And it's such a timing deal. If you hit the spots when they're up and feeding, you can get well in a hurry. Today I didn't do that."

About tomorrow, he said: "I'm looking forward (to it). Guntersville's treated me well, but not exceptionally well. I'd like to have a shot at (the win).

Kevin VanDam said it may look easy, but he's 'having to work real hard.'

"It's going to be fun," he added. "It's such a good lake. A lot of these guys are great fishermen, and they're all catching the same fish. But if you can get a 7- or 8-pound bite, along with the type of fish we're catching, that'll be (key)."

7th: Jordon Rocked Morning Spot

The last three times Jordon fished Guntersville in the spring, his finishes were 1st, 3rd and 14th. And of course, he made the cut today with a giant move up from 36th.

The difference today, he said, was he made better decisions and stuck with his good water a little longer.

"It feels good after the sorry day I had yesterday," he noted. "I tried to cover too much stuff yesterday – too much ground. I quit on some of my really good stuff when I shouldn't have. It was just one of those days."

His sack today included two 6s, but he lost a late bed-fish that would have went about 4 pounds, and would have culled out a 2 1/2.

He noted that he and his partner caught all their fish this morning. In fact, they caught a combined 37 1/2 pounds from one single cast – meaning, they stayed in one spot and made the same cast over and over again. All those fish were in the box by 8:30.

About whether he can win, he said: "I certainly hope so. But coming back from 5 pounds deep, I'll have to have a few big bites.

"It could happen, but I'm sure glad I've got a chance to fish tomorrow. I'm tickled to death to be here. Looking at where I'm sitting right now, though, I wish it was a 4-day tournament."

58th: Biffle Just Shy

Tommy Biffle, who entered the event at 12th in the AOY race, caught more than twice what he caught yesterday (17-08 vs. 8-07), but it wasn't enough to finish in the money.

"Yesterday I lost them, and today I lost a 5-pounder right at the end that cost me making the cut," he said. "I just didn't have good luck this week."

He fished shallow in the afternoons, and out deep in the river in the mornings. His undoing, he said, was that he tried to do too many things.

"I had a couple of big bedding fish I tried to catch too. I should have flipped the whole time and stayed shallow. I was just doing too many things. It'll be a lesson learned."

Notable

> VanDam lost a prop today that cost him no more than a half-hour of fishing.

> Duckett, who began the day in 8th, weighed just 10-02 today and finished 33rd. "(I had) no big bites today," he said. "I made a lot of decisions that obviously weren't the best ones. But it's nice to be back home (in Alabama). I was kind of lost out there on the West Coast."

> BASS hasn't released qualification standings for the upcoming Bassmaster American Major, but it did state that Pete Ponds is currently on the bubble. He started strong with 20-07, but caught just 7-01 today and fell 40 spots today to finish 45th. "I want to fish (the American) so bad," he said. "I don't know if you can imagine catching a $10,000 fish, but I felt like that's what I was doing all day." (Note: Last place in the no entry fee Majors pays $10,500.)

> With 26-14 total, current Elite Series points leader Skeet Reese finished 53rd. He said: "I know I'll still be in good shape as far as the points. I may not be leading, but I hope I am. There's plenty of tournaments left, and I'll be swinging at every one of them."

> BassFan Big Stick John Murray finished 58th – 1-02 in back of the money. To read his report, click here to go On Tour With The BassFan Big Sticks.

> Mike Iaconelli, who won here last year, mustered a mere 25-12 total and finished 64th. He said he didn't fish his areas from last year. "Whenever I do well in an area, especially when you win and it's TV, that area's pretty much shot for about 5 years." About his lagging stats this year, he said: "It's been one of those years for me when things don't materialize on the water. But you can't give up. Don't count me out yet."
