The fishing at today's Chevy Open (Potomac FLW) was a little tougher. Yes, the weights were a little lower today, but it was mentally – and verbally – tough. The Angler of the Year (AOY) title's on the line. So are Forrest L. Wood Championship berths. In one case, the Top 2 – Brent Chapman and Mike Iaconelli – rubbed shoulders and mixed words on the water today.
Chapman weighed the day's biggest sack – anchored by a fish that weighed almost 6 pounds – which
brought his 2-day total to 33-10 and moved him up from 12th to 1st.
Iaconelli moved up one spot today and made the cut in 2nd with 14-13 (33-09 total). The next two spots in the standings are occupied by the anglers still alive in the AOY chase. Greg Hackney caught 14-06 today and is 3rd with 32-10, and Toshinari Namiki caught 16-01 for 4th with 32-07 total.
Hackney still has a 7-point edge over Namiki in the FLW Tour points, so Namiki could win the title if he finishes eight spots ahead of Hackney. If they tie, the title will be decided by tiebreaker – total weight caught over the season. At this point, it's not clear if the tiebreaker is total weight caught on all tournament days, or just days 1 and 2. If it's all tournament days, Namiki would likely have the edge since he's made three Top 10 cuts this year and Hackney's made only one.
(Editor's note: BassFan is currently waiting for a tiebreaker clarification from FLW Outdoors.)
“It’s fun because now I get to fish two more days and I have a serious chance,” Namiki said. “I think my chance is maybe 10 or 20 percent, and that’s better than nothing.”
There's big news at the 5th-place spot. Clark Wendlandt moved up from 29th to 5th today after he caught the day's second-biggest bag (17-01). His two-day total is 31-13.
First-day leader Jerry Williams is 6th with 31-07. He made the cut with a relatively light 11-03 bag today, but had room to spare after his 20-04 limit on day 1.
Gary Yamamoto made a big jump from 42nd to 7th with 16-13 today (30-14 total). Carl Svebek III climbed from 26th to 8th with 15-13 today (30-10 total). George Cochran climbed from 40th to 9th with 16-04 (30-07 total) and Sam Newby, 5th after day 1, made the cut in 10th with 12-03 today (30-04 total). All weights are zeroed tomorrow.
Those who went the wrong way in the standings included Todd Faircloth, Dave Lefebre, Michael Huminik, Alvin Shaw, Randy Blaukat and David Lauer. All were in the Top 10 after day 1, but all missed the cut.
The field was greeted by a windy morning (gusts 15 to 20 mph), but the breeze subsided by midday and the afternoon was calm and warm.
Chapman Frustrated
A couple of big fish – one yesterday and one today - pushed Chapman to the top of the standings.
He got one that weighed almost 5 pounds yesterday, and followed that up with a 5-14 toad today. He thinks there are more big ones to be caught, but the guy right behind him on the leaderboard is after the same fish.
He said his boat and Iaconelli's were a little to close for his comfort today, which prompted an unpleasant verbal exchange.
"I believe in a certain level of sportsmanship, and that wasn't displayed out there today," he said. "I hope he eventually grows up a little bit."
Chapman told BassFan he protested Iaconelli for failure to observe a no-wake zone and unsportsmanlike conduct. "We were in the same area the first day, on other ends of the marina, and we met up when we were fishing down a narrow lane," he said. "I didn't think we had a problem. We met up, chatted, he left – it was no big deal.
"Today I was fishing down one little pocket in this marina, and he was fishing down another. I'd been in there an hour and a half before he even got in there. I caught a 6-pounder. I was pretty excited, but I didn't wake up the whole city. He saw it, and I think it made him mad."
According to Chapman, that's when things turned ugly. "It wasn't 5 minutes later, I saw him idling out at 100 mph, and just at the edge of the docks, he puts it on plane, comes over, shuts down right in front of where I'm fishing and just starts fishing down the docks."
It appears the two then exchanged words. "I just told (Iaconelli) I didn't think that was right. He just kind of basically told me what I did to him yesterday wasn't right. I said I was at least a quarter-mile away from him yesterday. He was trying to compare and say that cutting me off by 20 feet is the same thing. When I saw him yesterday, he was going the opposite direction."
Chapman said he was frustrated his protest didn't result in a DQ. "We had myself, my partner, then another gentleman and his co-angler who saw it as well. My interpretation of the ruling was they gave him a slap on the wrist. They gave him a warning. It just doesn't make sense.
(Editor's note: BassFan was unable to obtain an official ruling from FLW Outdoors before this story went to press.)
"We're supposed to be professionals at a higher level of sportsmanship. It just didn't happen there. Last week I had to hear him hooting and hollering on the other side of the lake at Wissota. Yeah it's frustrating when someone's catching fish and you're not, but where he caught fish last week was where I caught fish.
"I don't like confrontation, but I'm getting fed up with the way certain people in this industry are being portrayed as these great professional athletes and they're not doing it when they're on the water. After today, I'm done sugarcoating that stuff. I think more stuff like that needs to get out. It's kind of amazing when something like this happens, and all these people come up and say they've had the same experiences."
Aside from the confrontation, Chapman noted he also has another area that houses some toads, so he's pretty confident for the final 2 days.
"In both of those places I'm sticking them with techniques that'll usually get you some bigger fish," he said. "Hopefully my luck will hold out and I'll keep getting those key bites."
Mike Iaconelli said of Chapman's accusations: "Hey, that's fishing."
Tides like Ike
Iaconelli's take on the confrontation would have made the late Dale Earnhardt proud.
"Hey, that's fishing," he said. "It's a big marina and there's a lot of room to move around. If Brent wants to be a crybaby about it, then so be it."
Iaconelli went straight from the Wissota Bassmaster Elite 50 in Wisconsin to New York for an ESPN taping and didn't arrive in the Washington D.C. area until Sunday night. That left him just a day and a half of practice time, but he said his knowledge of tidal rivers helped him overcome that handicap.
"I love tidal water and I have a lot of history on this river," he said. "I've never won here, but I had a lot of high BFL and (Bassmaster) Federation finishes when I was coming up through the ranks.
"It could be windy, cloudy, bluebird or whatever, and that doesn't affect me. The only thing that matters is tidal movement and I've got two patterns – one for high water and one for low water. It's just critical that I know what the tide is doing and make the right adjustments."
In addition to the tides, he said luck will play a factor in the final outcome. "Everybody's going to get some good fish, so it'll depend on who gets the kicker bite and gets a couple of 5-pounders."
Both Greg Hackney (right) and Toshinari Namiki made the cut, so the AOY title will be decided on Saturday.
Hackney Likes Odds
Hackney, who's ranked No. 1 in the State Farm-BassFan World Rankings, will fish 2 more days. But so will Namiki. Hackney has a 7-point cushion over Namiki in the AOY race, so he has the better odds right now.
"It's pretty good odds in my favor," he said. "I'd say the odds are more in my favor than his, because I did have a 7-point lead coming into this tournament over him.
"I'll take all the advantage I can get."
He likes his area, but said he should like it even better tomorrow with fewer boats. "I'm enjoying the way I'm fishing. I'm fishing a really good area. I feel there's a lot of potential there.
"I won't have to compete with boats tomorrow, except maybe some locals. Nobody else made the cut who was in there. I should have it to myself tomorrow."
And although he wants to win the tournament, he wants to win the AOY title even more. "That's my biggest goal right now. I'd like to win the tournament too, but at the present, my goal is really the AOY title.
"It's something that's eluded me – kind of like my first tour victory. I was second (in the points) in both tours last year, and this year I have a second opportunity to do it.
"I would really like to accomplish that. I don't want to do anything to jinx myself, but I really feel like I have a legitimate shot at the whole thing."
Wendlandt Wired
Wendlandt, the two-time FLW AOY who's had a miserable season (130th in the points coming in), said he had his best day of 2005 – by far.
"Oh, I'd say that for sure," he said. "I want to say it was because I went out and fished without fear. I had no chance of making the (Championship), so I wasn't fishing to survive. I just went out and used the gifts that God gave me.
"I've made 18 FLW Top 10s (in my career), but I think this is the most excited I've ever been."
Clark Wendlandt's happy – he made his first cut this season.
His bag contained two fish that each went about 4 1/2 pounds. He caught one early and one in the middle of the day.
"I had a good practice here and I actually think I underachieved a little on the first day with 14-12," he said. "I think I've got a good pattern and after today I feel like I've got a chance to win."
Sun Aided Yamamoto
Yamamoto rocketed from 43rd to 7th with his 16-13 bag. He was glad to see the sun shine all day.
"It was sunny and warm and that's the way I like it," he said. "The sunnier it is, the better. That makes the fish stick tighter to the structure."
He was also happy to see fewer boats in his spots than on the previous day.
"I knew I was on some good fish, but yesterday there were just too many boats around," he said. "Today some of them went other places and that gave me more space to work."
This Top 10 is his first this season and his second on the FLW Tour.
He thinks his fish will hold up for the tournament's final 2 days.
"I'll just have to hit the tide right," he said. "There's a million holes to cast to."
Fair Weather Hurt Faircloth
Faircloth was at the opposite end of the spectrum from Yamamoto. On day 1, he'd picked up a couple of good topwater bites in the middle of the day on the way to his big bag (18-15), but the lack of cloud cover today hurt the surface bite.
"With no clouds, I think it just kind of killed that bite," he said. "Plus, the wind blew hard this morning and muddied up a couple of my spots, and I just don't have confidence fishing muddy water. I tried to stay in clear water, but that was tough to do until things started clearing up a little bit this afternoon.
"I caught 10 or 12 keepers, so I got a fair number of bites," he said. "I just didn't get anything big. I fished as hard as I could and I didn't lose any fish. When you just don't get the big bite, you can't complain too much."
Notable
> Day 2 stats: 200 anglers, 153 limits (27 less than yesterday), 15 fours, 18 threes, 7 twos, 1 one, 6 zeroes (6 more than yesterday).
> As of 8:00 p.m., Chapman still didn't know where he was going to sleep. "I'm still looking around for a hotel room and I haven't even started on my tackle yet," he said. "It doesn't look promising."
> Hackney would have clinched the AOY title today if Namiki missed the cut. His family's at the tournament, but can't stay until Saturday. "My wife and her mother and my oldest son are here," he said. "The thing about it is, they're leaving tomorrow at 3:00. It just works out that way."
> J.T. Kenney came into the tournament as the points leader. He finished 114th with just 7-14 on day 2.
> BassFan Big Stick John Murray finished 136th. Big Stick Chris Koester made the co-angler cut in 9th. To read their reports, click here to go On Tour With the BassFan Big Sticks.
> The 2-day total catch of 3,201 bass weighing 7,084 pounds, 1 ounce is the Tour's third-best of all-time in terms of bass caught and total weight. Only Lake Champlain, N.Y. produced more fish (2002, 2004).
> Tom Arnold, Chris Rose and John Salley will appear in the Family Fun Zone from 2 to 4 p.m. Friday for a special taping of FSN's Best Damn Sports Show Period, which airs weeknights at 10:30 p.m. Arnold, Rose and Salley will interview FLW Tour anglers and prominent sports figures from the D.C. area. Spectators could possibly make an appearance on the show as well.
