Tuma Didn't Have To Go Far To Catch Big Bags

Not only did Keith Tuma capture the top prize at the recent Harris Chain Bassmaster Southern Open, but he likely spent less on boat fuel than any other competitor in the event – even those who didn't advance to the final day.

Fishing within a half-mile of the takeoff in Leesburg, Fla., the Minnesota resident compiled 58-13 over three days to outdistance runner-up and day-2 leader Alex Wetherell by 2 pounds. He started the final day in 10th place before catching the derby's top stringer – a 26-02 haul that included two fish that combined to weigh about 15 pounds.

The long-odds victory, which garnered him $52,300, surprised just about everybody and the guy who pulled it off was no exception. The tournament was the 48-year-old's debut at the triple-A level.

"My goal coming in was to make the Top 40," he said. "I thought it would be great to cut a check with the caliber of fishermen (who compete) in these events.

"It was surreal to make the Top 10, then the final day was above and beyond. It still hasn't sunk in."

The triumph qualified him for the 2022 Bassmaster Classic, which he'll have about a year to mentally prepare for.

"I was talking to (former Elite Series pro and five-time Classic qualifier) Jacob Powroznik after the weigh-in and he said 'If you think you're shaking now, wait until they're playing your music and you're coming through the tunnel in your boat in front of that crowd. You can't see anything because of the lights and the noise is almost deafening. You just wait.'''

It Hadn't Been Long

Tuma was making his second visit to the Harris Chain in a span of three months. In December, he and team partner Andy Walls placed 2nd in the Bassmaster Team Championship and advanced to the Classic Fish-Off, which was won by Jordan Wiggins (Walls was 2nd in the individual portion of the event and Tuma ended up 5th).

By last week, all but about 10 percent of the hydrilla was gone from the places that Tuma fished before Christmas. He found two stretches of prime vegetation during the week of practice he put in, though, and he could've swam to either one from the launch ramp if he'd had to. He and Wetherell shared one of those locales during the tournament.

"It was a spot that I marked on the first day of practice when I was driving around," he said. "I never did wet a line there, but I could tell (from what he saw on his electronics) that it was going to be juicy. I just didn't know how juicy."

The place had what he described as a trench or channel that had water in the 12- to 13-foot depth range. It ran up toward the shoreline, where it was met by a wall of hydrilla in about 9 1/2 feet.

"The top of the grass was sparse," he said. "It was clumpy and it looked right and it looked clean, and the other thing I noticed was baitfish."

He started day 1 dragging a worm in a different place because "that's what you do in Florida." It'd been fairly effective in practice, but was fruitless that day. Everything changed when his co-angler tied on a swimjig and hooked up with a big fish that he ended up losing.

That's when he relocated to the hydrilla wall connected to the deep-water channel and started throwing a ChatterBait. His resulting bag weighed just 12-06 and left him in 58th place, but he became convinced that he needed to focus on that location and stick with the bladed jig.

That was a good call, as he weighed a combined 46-07 over the next 2 days. He squeaked into the Top 10 with a 20-05 stringer on day 2 before popping the biggest bag of the derby on the final day.

He and leader Wetherall both began the day on the hydrilla wall, with Tuma (who was trailing by 13 pounds) on a far outside edge. He picked up three keepers, including a 6-pounder, fairly early and then moved inside for a while when Wetherell departed.

Eventually returning to the corner where he caught the 6, he bagged an 8-03 for his fourth fish.

"The ChatterBait just stopped and I set the hook and the fish didn't move – it was just a bunch of head-shaking," he said. "When it came up I saw that it had the bait engulfed. When I pulled it up my marshal was whooping and hollering; it was awesome."

He stayed in that vicinity and added one more decent fish. Then, noticing that most of the baitfish had left, he moved up to the top of a nearby flat where there was some short hydrilla in 6 feet of water. He got a few bumps from fish that seemed like they didn't want to commit, then tied into another one that refused to budge when he raised his rod.

"It was cutting to the side and my marshal was freaking again. When it came up, I could see it wasn't much smaller than the 8. It was pushing 7 or 7 1/2 and it culled out my last 2-pounder."

That provided him with more than enough weight to complete the nine-place jump to the top of the final standings.

> Tuma is the owner of a company called Tuff Tow (www.TuffTow.com) that manufacturers wheeled devices that attach to enclosed trailers in order to take weight off the vehicle's hitch when pulling a heavy load.

> He has a 14-year-old daughter, Breanne, who usually serves as his practice partner for tournaments near home.

> He thinks he'd thoroughly enjoy competing on the Elite Series if he qualifies at some point. "I think it would be an amazing opportunity; the camaraderie and the sportsmanship at second to none. It's really cool stuff. It's competitive, but it's still guys having fun. I'm one of the guys who has that dream."
