Jason Abram had never been to Lake Martin prior to last week’s FLW Pro Circuit event, but it took him all of one day in practice to get settled in.

“People had told me it looked a lot like Cherokee Lake, which is basically my home lake, and that it fished like it,” Abram said. “After the first day, I got comfortable running around and understood what was going on.”

That spelled doom for the rest of the field as Abram seized control after day 2 and went on to capture the biggest win of his career. His 52-09 total over four days included a 17-10 effort on day 2 and was enough to fend off Angler of the Year points leader Ron Nelson, who finished second with 51-08.

Abram was able to establish a reliable one-two punch pattern that saw him box an early limit of spotted bass before targeting pre-spawn largemouth around hard targets, mainly docks, in the backs of creeks and pockets.

“My decision-making was really good,” Abram said. “I stuck with what I thought would work.”

His research indicated spotted bass wouldn’t be enough to be in contention.

“It seemed the only way to win is if you had a few largemouth,” he said. “I figured if I had a limit of spots and two or three largemouth, that would be a good formula.”

The conditions, Abram said, were ideal for catching the lake in its pre-spawn phase.

“You couldn’t have asked for better conditions,” he said. “It brought the fish to the bank, but the one drawback was they were steadily dropping the water. If that hadn’t happened, I think we’d have seen more 17- or 18-pound bags caught. There were a lot of females cruising and that was the key to me winning. I wasn’t after the ones that were locked down. I was chasing the ones thinking about locking down.”

Morning Spots

In practice, Abram tried to generate a flipping pattern around wood, but it didn’t pan out. He also searched for spotted bass schooled up in deeper water. That also didn’t pan out.

He then recalibrated his focus to the backs of creeks, where he figured the largemouth would be headed. On the final day of practice, he finally got clued in.

“I caught a 3-pounder on a (Reaction Innovations) Skinny Dipper,” he said. “It was the only decent one I caught, but that told me the good ones were shallow.”

He knew he couldn’t bank on a stringer full of largemouth each day, though. While some of his hunches didn’t bear fruit, he located a couple stretches of rocky shoreline that seemed to be holding a group of spotted bass. Those became his go-to areas to gain some momentum in the mornings.

“The stretch of bank I started on every morning, I’d catch a limit each time within 45 minutes,” he said. “It was in a narrowing and to me it felt like those fish were feeding and chasing bait to the bank. I would hit a pod on a stretch and catch three or four, then hit another pod of them. It was really easy to catch a limit. I wanted that so I didn’t get discouraged chasing one or two largemouth.”

The Skinny Dipper was his bait of choice for the spots as he would parallel the banks with each cast. The key each day was timing his move to his largemouth strategy around when the sun would get above trees. By that time on all four days – usually in the 9:30 a.m. range – he was toting a limit of spots in his livewell.

“I’d bounce around looking for rocky banks or a plain bank with little rocks,” he said. “I was just running water on the way to where I thought I could catch largemouth on the lower end of the lake.”

Getting ‘Flirt’-acious

After catching 11-06 on day 1, Abram still felt good about his one-two punch, but he sensed an adjustment was in order. He stuck with the Skinny Dipper when he went largemouth hunting on day 1, but had only one bite on a dock.

“On day 2, I went to the Flirt worm when I went looking for largemouth and that was what I needed,” he said. “I was on the right things on day 1, but I just presented the wrong bait. The Flirt worm was lights out.”

After catching a 17-pound stringer on day 2, Abram had a sense the tournament was going to go his way.

His day-2 stringer was anchored by a pair beefy largemouth and a 4 1/2-pound spotted bass.

“Everything went better than planned that day,” he said.

He caught a 5-04 largemouth and the big spot out of the same tree on back-to-back casts with the Skinny Dipper. He figured things were starting to fall into place at that point.

“At that moment, I knew I had to chance to win,” he said. “I fished around for another 30 minutes and had 13 pounds in the boat, so I knew I’d make the top-30 cut and should be in the top 10 after the day. I thought if I can catch one more largemouth I’d be in good shape.”

Sure enough, the first dock he stopped at was one where he’d seen some fish cruising the day before. He skipped the weightless Flirt worm along a shade line and coaxed a 4-plus pounder to eat it.

Abram said the best decision he made during the tournament was making the switch to the Flirt “and sticking with it, knowing I was going to get one to three bites doing it.”

For the most part, he used a skipping presentation with the worm, targeting shade lines around docks and really shallow pockets.

“I was looking for the last thing they could get on before going to spawn – the last thing in the creek is what I was looking for,” he said. “I recycled some water, but mostly ran new water every day. I fished areas each day I’d never seen before. If it looked good on my Lowrance, I’d go there.

“If I got in an area where I caught a lot of fish, typically I wouldn’t catch any good ones, but if I fished a creek and got one bite, it’d be a good one. It seemed like the big ones separated from the pack and were literally by themselves.”

Winning Gear Notes

> Swimbait gear: 7’1” medium-heavy G. Loomis NRX casting rod, Shimano SLX casting reel (7.2:1 ratio), 14-pound Sunline Super FC Sniper fluorocarbon line, 3/16-oz. prototype Reaction Innovations swimbait jighead, Reaction Innovations Skinny Dipper (white trash and lime ice).

> Abram relied on the white trash color in dirtier water and went with lime ice where the water the cleaner. “The deal was the bait had to be just out of visibility,” he said. “When it got to where I couldn’t see it, that was the right depth.”

> Worm gear: 6’8” medium-action G. Loomis NRX spinning rod, unnamed spinning reel, 16-pound Sunline SX1 braided line, 12-pound Sunline fluorocarbon leader material, 3/0 Gamakatsu wide-gap worm hook, Reaction Innovations Flirt Worm (merthiolate).

> Abram also had a green-pumpkin Flirt Worm rigged on a shaky-head for scenarios where he needed a follow-up presentation.

Notable

Abram, whose wife is a nurse practitioner in Johnson City, Tenn., said it was tough not having his family on hand to celebrate his win. As a result of the coronavirus outbreak, FLW held the weigh-in without a crowd and measures were taken to keep anglers separated during the weigh-in process.

“It was on everybody’s mind,” Abram said. “It was on my mind. The bag lines weren’t there and you’re trying to keep your distance from everybody. It’s still on everybody’s mind today. Half of the field was saying, ‘We shouldn’t be here.’ My wife works mostly with elderly patients at a primary care physician’s office so she’s right on the front lines of this.”
