Andy Morgan’s weight fell off by more than 3 pounds today, but his lead remained at 1 pound, 6 ounces at the halfway point of the Lake Cumberland FLW Tour.

The three-time Angler of the Year from Dayton, Tenn., who endured two triple-digit finishes earlier this season, sacked a solid 15-12 and heads into the weekend with 34-11.

While Morgan’s advantage didn’t change, the list of names closest to him on the leaderboard certainly got jumbled as the fishing seemed to improve, especially for those chasing smallmouth.

Darrel Robertson caught 17-06 and moved up from 7th to 2nd with 33-05. Clent Davis, who’s had to fish with a fractured right wrist since suffering the injury at the Harris Chain Tour event, tacked on 16-13 to advance three places to 3rd with 32-15.

Reigning AOY Bryan Thrift caught his FLW Tour-record 51st straight limit, this one weighing 17-04, and improved nine spots to 4th with 32-13. Kerry Milner locked up his fourth straight top-50 to open the season with a 17-12 stringer that put him in 5th with 31-06.

Here's a look at the top 10 entering the third day of competition, with deficit margin from Morgan indicated by red numbers in parentheses:

1. Andy Morgan: 34-11
2. Darrel Robertson: 33-05 (1-06)
3. Clent Davis: 32-15 (1-12)
4. Bryan Thrift: 32-13 (1-13)
5. Kerry Milner: 31-06 (3-05)
6. Greg Bohannan: 30-14 (3-13)
7. Allen Boyd: 30-13 (3-14)
8. Chris McCall: 30-11 (4-00)
9. Ramie Colson Jr.: 30-08 (4-03)
10. Carl Jocumsen: 30-05 (4-06)

The three-day run of sun and wind will give way to a rainy spring weekend and that could fire up the smallmouth even more at Cumberland, where they tend to thrive under such conditions. With the fish starting to feed more aggressively as they transition through their pre-spawn phase, the expectation is that the best may be yet to come.

Jeff Sprague moved up 80 spots today and made the cut in 21st after bagging 17-15. Chris Johnston improved 54 positions with a 16-08 stringer that moved him up to 17th. James Watson bagged 16-12 and shot up 41 places to 14th entering the weekend.

Jason Meninger dropped to 45th (from 2nd) after catching four fish for 8-12 today while Jared McMillan maintained his lead in AOY points despite sinking from 4th to 78th after a three-fish day netted him 7-01.

The field will be reduced to the top 10 after day 3 and the winner will be determined Sunday by highest 4-day total.

Morgan Thinks It’ll Get Better

> Day 2: 5, 15-12 (10, 34-11)

Morgan has no doubt the fishing is going to keep improving through the weekend. He’s seen these weather patterns in the spring too many times before to think otherwise.

“They’re going to bite,” he said. “If you get in a funk, you’re going to get way behind.”

The three days of sun, Morgan says, have activated their pre-spawn feeding fury.

“It’s springtime and we’ve had sun and warm nights and wind,” he added. “We’ve had everything conditionally to have a good spring day of fishing. Tomorrow will be the same. It’s going to be a warm night and a warm day with storms. That spells good times in April if you’re bass fishing.”

He hopes he doesn’t miss the fun after two solid days to start.

“It’s all from the hip both days,” he said. “If I keep making good decisions, I’ll have a shot at it.”

He had four largemouth and a smallmouth in his creel today, but no standouts.

“I had a shot at a big bag, but it was good for me all day long,” he added.

2nd: Robertson Amped Up

> Day 2: 5, 17-06 (10, 33-05)

Last year, Robertson finished just out of the money at Cumberland. This week, the 68-year-old is in contention to cash in big-time. He’s weighed in all largemouth through two days and still has areas he’s yet to fish since practice.

“We hit the lake at the exact right time,” he said. “The fish are a little more aggressive (compared to last year). They’re thinking about feeding versus spawning.”

He said he’s had a limit within the first hour both days, each time targeting different areas.

“I still have new water to go to and some water I’m anxious to go back to,” he added. “I had two places where I had a lot of bites in practice. I fished one yesterday and figured I’d try the other one today. I was worried about it, but then the second bush I threw at, I caught a 2 1/2-pounder.”

He’s excited to get back out on the water Saturday despite the forecast.

“I’m anxious to fish tomorrow,” he said. “I think this will be one of the most competitive tournaments we’ve had in a long time. I like my chances with what I’m doing.

“I’ve had such a sorry year this year that I was worried about getting a check. My first goal today was 9 pounds. My second goal was 13 or 14 to make the top 30. My next goal is to win this stinking thing.”

3rd: All Smallmouth for Davis

> Day 2: 5, 16-13 (10, 32-15)

Davis came to Cumberland with a good working knowledge of the lake after visiting prior to it going off-limits.

“It was a huge shock coming back because it looked like a septic tank a few weeks ago,” he said. “Now, it’s clearing up.”

That hasn’t bothered him at all as he’s weighed in 10 smallmouth so far.

“I thought I fished where largemouth lived today and caught all smallmouth,” he said. “I’m committed to whatever bites and weighs the most.

“You have to go through numbers to get to 16 pounds. I’m just fishing. I’m not fishing anything that’s the same as yesterday. I’m even debating what I’m going to do tomorrow.”

4th: Thrift Hoping They’re Still Around

> Day 2: 5, 17-04 (10, 32-13)

The last time Thrift failed to record a limit in Tour competition was day 1 at Lake Pickwick in 2016. He wasn’t aware he was approaching a record of any sort until Lanier, when he was told he was closing in on Meyer’s mark.

“It’s pretty awesome,” he said. “I didn’t know they kept up with that.”

In order for him to keep adding to the record, he’s hoping Cumberland’s smallmouth continue to cooperate. He’s yet to weigh in a largemouth through two days.

“The key for me has been slowing down in one area,” he said. “That’s been my whole deal. I don’t really like this lake, but I’ve done well both times. It’s a fishing lake. It’s not a lake to run and gun on and know where you can pull up to catch them.”

Over the first two days, he’s mined an area he found on Tuesday, but he’s questioning how much longer he can hang around. Most of his bites have come on reaction bites with the deepest being in the 10- to 12-foot range.

“I’m worried that area is about done and that’s just from experience last year,” he said. “I stayed in one area for 2 days and on day 3 I couldn’t get bit. I don’t know if this area will be the same. The only difference this year is it’s easier to get bit.”

5th: Milner Guided by an Open Mind

> Day 2: 5, 17-12 (10, 31-06)

Milner finished 123rd at Cumberland last year and he used it as a learning experience coming into this week.

“Last year, it was too good to me in practice and then things changed and I didn’t change with it,” he said. “With the water being up, it took the whole game away from me so it forced me in a different direction. I’m being more open-minded.”

He’s hit the same section of the lake both days and has had plenty of water to himself, which is always a plus.

“I’ve been able to run and gun pretty good,” he said. “I’m fortunate in that I found something that would work all over the lake but it’s pretty special because it has all three species and they’re coming to me. It’s just a matter of me executing and not having too many mistakes.”

He anticipates the rainy weather triggering the smallmouth to bite better tomorrow and he’s open to calling an audible if his program starts to fade. He’s caught a mixed bag each day.

“Those brown fish will play more tomorrow,” he said. “For the most part there’s more weight in them on this lake. I’m definitely opening my mind up as well to mix them in with what I’ve been doing.”

130th: Bait, Location Change Key for Reese

> Day 2: 5, 18-05 (6, 19-11)

Jimmy Reese threw a jerkbait all day Thursday thinking it was the key to unlocking the smallmouth bite. He tallied one keeper and was buried in 177th place.

Today, he tied on a spinnerbait and slow-rolled it in 10 to 15 feet of water along bluff walls. His limit, comprised of three smallmouth, 1 largemouth and a spot, was the heaviest of the day.

The difference was like night and day, he said.

“I can’t even explain it,” he said. “It’s one of those things. I only had three bites Thursday. I caught 30 today. I just changed zip codes and picked up a spinnerbait and didn’t put it down.

“It’s so frustrating. I can’t even explain how you catch one fish on day 1 here. I got stuck on a jerkbait because I thought that’s what I needed to do well. I should’ve kept moving until I found active fish.”
