While virtually everyone else in the field was content targeting Oneida’s Lake voracious population of smallmouth bass, Stanley Sypeck, Jr. had other ideas.

The Pennsylvania angler and longtime frequent visitor to the Central New York fishery, where he’s won numerous local and regional tournaments, figured at some point the largemouth that occupy those same waters would come into play. The fact that he couldn’t consistently tap into the better quality smallmouth also factored into his thinking.

Sypeck knew how to read the lake and react when one decision didn’t pan out, a product of his experience there. He didn’t get spun out mentally by frequent changes in the weather. He just rolled to his next spot believing they’d be biting there or at the next ‘next’ spot.

Eventually, he became convinced targeting largemouth near where the grass transitioned to rock and on isolated rock piles gave him the best chance to do well. After catching 18-01 on day 1 and following it up with 17-00 to make his first 12-cut in a Bassmaster Open, Sypeck put an exclamation point on the week with a tournament-best 20-07 on Saturday to win with a three-day total of 55-08.

He capped the final day with a 5-04 kicker in the final half hour to beat FLW Tour stalwart Wesley Strader by a little more than 3 pounds.

“It feels great,” Sypeck said. “It’s a long time coming. Something’s always happened to me. I’ve either lost a fish or something’s gone wrong. I fished flawless for 3 days. I think I lost one fish on day 1 that may have cost me a little less than a pound, but all the decisions I made and everything I did was the right stuff.”

He said he fished more than two dozen spots each day and caught every fish he weighed on a proven jig a friend of his makes in Central New York. It all boiled down to good decisions and being confident, he said.

“I fished the best I’ve fished ever,” Sypeck said. “I used to get so excited with nerves, but all three days I never got shook up or excited. I fished slow when I had to. (Elite Series) angler Jamie Hartman is a good friend of mine and like he and I always say, ‘You just have to catch them one at a time.’ That’s been my motto.”

Here’s some more insight about how Sypeck conquered Oneida and took down a 198-boat field.

Practice

Sypeck said largemouth is usually his preferred species to target at Oneida “because usually that’s what wins.”

But it was hard to ignore the talk about how well the smallmouth were biting during the days leading up to the tournament. He only practiced for 1 1/2 days and dropped $300 on dropshot baits and tackle in anticipation of chasing brown fish.

“I was catching some, but not the right ones,” he said. “On Wednesday, I checked some largemouth stuff and caught a good one.”

That gave him pause and only opened up more options for him. The largemouth were in their post-spawn phase and with so many other competitors chasing smallmouth, he figured he’d have more opportunities if he geared himself toward largemouth.

He caught smallmouth out as deep as 22 feet in practice, but never caught one during the tournament despite fishing for them at times during competition.

“I could only catch 2 1/2s to 3s in practice,” he said. “I don’t know where they went.”

Competition

> Day 1: 5, 18-01
> Day 2: 5, 17-00
> Day 3: 5, 20-07
> Total = 15, 55-08

Sypeck had a good boat draw to open the tournament and figured he’d use the opportunity to take a flyer on largemouth to start.

“I gave it an hour and caught a 2 1/2-pounder, then four big ones,” he said. “I knew it was happening.”

By 9 a.m. Thursday, he had 16 pounds. After that, he shifted to smallmouth water, figuring a 3 1/2-pounder would eventually bite. He went three hours without a bite and shifted back to largemouth mode, making a final upgrade with a 4-02 toward the end of the day to crack the 18-pound mark.

“That made my mind up for the rest of the week,” he said.

On Friday, he started on his best largemouth spot, but only caught one there. He also tried some smallmouth spots, but came up empty there. He “scrambled around” to put together a decent bag, pitching a 7/16-ounce jig to isolated offshore spots or flipping it at shoreline targets. His best fish was a 4-11 and came late in the day.

His 17-00 bag put him in 7th place entering the final day, less than 2 pounds behind leader Steve York.

“I was still within 1 1/2 pounds of the lead,” Sypeck said. “I still wanted to have a chance (entering day 3). I didn’t want the lead, but I didn’t want to be out of it. I just wanted a chance.”

His best spot went cold again on Saturday as an east wind swept in, bringing rain and unsettled conditions. Scramble mode again produced, only this time he wound up with a 6-pound limit for a couple hours.

“I couldn’t catch them,” he said.

The water had come up nearly a foot from Friday, he estimated, and that forced him to rethink the depths he was targeting.

“That’s what I think killed my deep pattern,” he said. “I think those fish moved shallow. I kept thinking about the Lake Dardanelle Elite Series where (Mike) Iaconelli and Hartman were catching them cranking, but Steve Kennedy wound up winning it in the bushes. I thought about that all day. I think the fish went shallow. After about 2 hours of catching squeakers, I moved and found them. They went from 10 to 7 feet. I don’t get it, but they did. They were still eating crayfish because my livewell was full of crayfish each day.”

He eventually found a spot that was hot and caught 10 keepers, all between 2 1/2 and 3 1/4 pounds with one 4-pounder mixed in.

“I knew I had close to 14 or 15 pounds,” he said. “I knew it wasn’t enough to win.”

He then shifted his focus to big-fish haunts around the lake. He’d fished the lake the previous weekend and recalled seeing a 4- to 5-pound class fish guarding fry near a tree. He fished for it Thursday, but couldn’t get it to bite. On Saturday, it fell for his jig.

With an hour to fish on the final day, he moved into Big Bay on the northwest side of the lake and caught a 5-04 kicker off a shallow rock pile 15 feet in front of his boat.

“I caught them the best in the rain on Saturday,” he added. “I must’ve caught 30 fish total. I probably fish there 100 days a year from spring to fall. I know what to do when the conditions change more than other guys.”

Winning Pattern Notes

> Sypeck fished upwards of 30 spots a day and used a dropshot to target smallmouth (with little to no success) and a jig for largemouth.

“My confidence with a jig is so great,” he said. “I feel like I can catch them anywhere with it. The key was confidence in the bait and feeling no pressure. I felt like the bigger ones were eating a jig better. Most ate it on the fall. If they didn’t eat it on the fall, it was right when it got to the bottom.”

> He made short casts to isolated structure instead of long throws with the jig.

> Sypeck noted the water temperatures last week (69 to 71 degrees) were much lower than what is normal for this time of year. He thinks that helped in keeping more fish concentrated shallow.

Winning Gear Notes

> Jig gear: 7’ mag-heavy Dobyns Champion casting rod, Quantum Energy casting reel, 40-pound Seaguar Smackdown braided line, 7/16-oz. homemade jig (Cumberland craw), NetBait Paca chunk trailer (Alabama craw).

> The jig is built by a friend of Sypeck’s in Central New York and features an Arkie-style head and a 5/0 Gamakatsu hook.

The Bottom Line

> Main factor in his success – “My patience. I’ve been doing this 25 years and went into this with no expectations. The last three or four times I’ve fished this Open, I put so much pressure on myself to win. I tried to win day 1 each year. When I went to the meeting this week, I didn’t look at the trophy. I was just going to go fishing. I took my time and right up until take off, I wasn’t sure where I’d start. I talked to my son about and it he said, ‘Just go do what you do.” I put no pressure on myself. My original goal was to make the top 12 because I’d never done that. I just wanted a chance to be there to win.”

> Performance edge – “Having a Vexilar flasher on my bow. That helped me and was a big key to finding the hard spots. I was brought up fishing box flashers and every new boat I get I put a Vexilar on the bow.”
