Rumor has it that Scott Martin's primary locale this week at the Lake Champlain FLW Tour is the same rocky ridge he exploited en route to winning in 2009. Also, David Dudley is said to be fishing the same stretch in Missisquoi Bay that carried him to victory in 2012.

Those aren't two separate places – they're one and the same. The two circuit heavyweights will duel it out there this weekend in an effort to outpace a Top-20 field that's loaded with many of the Tour's most accomplished sticks.

Martin caught 20 pounds even on Friday to remain in the lead at the regular-season finale with a 2-day total of 42-05. He's about 3 1/2 pounds ahead of 2nd-place Bryan Schmitt, the Potomac River ace who boxed a day-best 21-05 for a 38-12 aggregate that moved him up 19 slots in the standings.

Newly crowned Rookie of the Year Chris Johnston was 3rd with 38-09 (17-07 on day 2), followed by Dudley with 38-06 (18-09). Cody Meyer completed the Top 5 with 37-01 after an 18-03 haul.

Here's how the Top 10 looks a the midway point (deficit margins from the leader are indicated by red numbers in parentheses:

1. Scott Martin: 42-05
2. Bryan Schmitt: 38-12 (3-09)
3. Chris Johnston: 38-09 (3-12)
4. David Dudley: 38-06 (3-15)
5. Cody Meyer: 37-01 (5-04)
6. Jason Meninger: 36-09 (5-12)
7. Stetson Blaylock: 36-07 (5-14)
8. Austin Felix: 36-06 (5-15)
9. Shinichi Fukae: 35-01 (7-04)
10. Andy Morgan: 35-00 (7-05)

Morgan, who moved up three places with a 16-14 sack, clinched his third Angler of the Year title in 4 years. After being dethroned by Martin last year, he started 2016 with two finishes in the 40s, but advanced to the weekend in each of the four subsequent derbies.

Jeff Sprague was the only competitor within 20 points of Morgan when the tournament began, but his 57th-place finish extinguished the final challenge to Morgan's supremacy.

The bite was strong again – it took 32 pounds even to claim the final $10,000 paycheck (50th place). Only two of the 160 anglers failed to catch a limit on day 2.

Martin used several different baits to compile his 20-pound bag on day 2.

Fukae made the biggest move to get into the Top 10, climbing from 34th place with an 18-11 stringer. Schmitt, Blaylock (18-04), Felix (18-04) and Morgan were also newcomers to that group.

Alex Davis (tied for 3rd with Dudley after day 1) and Blake Nick (5th) took the biggest tumbles, falling to 47th and 54th, respectively. Davis weighed 12-04 and Nick boxed 12-11.

The weather in the New York-Vermont border area continues to warm, and the forecast for day 3 calls for partly cloudy skies, a high temperature of 85 degrees and a southeasterly wind to 6 mph. The wind has yet to be a big factor, which is undoubtedly boosting the smallmouth bite as the brown fish (the ones that are spawning and those that have completed the process) can be visibly located in the absence of surface disturbance.

The field will be reduced to the Top 10 after Saturday's weigh-in, with the winner determined Sunday based on highest cumulative weight.

Martin Mixed in Bronzebacks

> Day 2: 5, 20-00 (10, 42-05)

After weighing all largemouths on Thursday, Martin caught a mixed bag on day 2 that included three smallmouths. He pulled two of the bronzebacks off of beds.

"They didn't bite really good at all today on some of my largemouth stuff," he said. "I kind of had to step back and go to some of the smallmouth stuff I had, and I'm glad I did because I ended up with three pretty good ones. That really saved the day.

"The bed-fish are pretty thin right now – I had some other ones that I checked on and they're all gone. I don't know if they just left or if they've been caught."

His bag was topped by a 4 3/4-pound largemouth and a 4 1/4-pound smallmouth. He continued to throw a variety of offerings.

"I'm really mixing it up quite a bit – yesterday I caught them on five or six different baits and today it was three or four. I've got one thing going that I think might be making a difference that I don't want to get into right now, but I think it might be getting me a few extra bites.

Bryan Schmitt is one of only a couple of anglers in the Top 20 who's made the long run south to Ticonderoga each day.

"This is one of those tournaments where having the lead is good. Sometimes you'd rather be in 2nd by a little bit, but here 1 ounce can be a big deal. I'll try to keep managing what I have, but catching another 20-pound bag would be pretty amazing."

2nd: Schmitt Heading South

> Day 2: 5, 21-05 (10, 38-12)

Schmitt appears to be one of only two anglers in the Top 20 making the long run south to Ticonderoga – Meninger is the other. He caught the day's biggest fish, a 5-08 largemouth.

"I lost some today that would've helped me," he said. "I had to weigh a 'heavy 2' and I had two on that were way bigger than that, but that's the name of the game. If I'd gotten them all it, it would've been special."

He looks forward to having more water to fish on day 3 due to the field reduction. Meninger will no doubt go back and Morgan said he'll head that direction, but that might be it as far as Tour boats.

"I don't know if I can get it, but without a doubt there's the possibility of another 20 pounds."

He's mixing up his approach, doing some flipping and throwing a swimjig, a frog and a Senko.

"I'm using whatever the specific grass dictates; in some places it's thicker than others."

3rd: Johnston Lacked a Kicker

> Day 2: 5, 17-07 (10, 38-09)

Johnston said his day unfolded in pretty much the same fashion that his previous one had, but his weight was off more than 2 1/2 pounds. That only cost him one place in the standings, however.

"I'm happy with it – I just couldn't get a kicker," he said. "Everything I caught was between 2 3/4 and 3 1/2 pounds. I needed that 4 1/2 or 5 to put me up there.

"I started on some bed-fish I had down the lake, but I culled all of those out. Tomorrow I'm just going after big fish. I've got four or five areas with big ones and some of them I can visibly see. I'll spend all day trying to get five good ones."

He said the bigger ones he can see have finished spawning and are just cruising around.

"They're mixed in with the carp and they're suspended and hard to catch. I caught four of them today, but it's tough.

"If I can trick a couple of them, I could have a big bag."

4th: Dudley Made Some Changes

> Day 2: 5, 18-09 (10, 38-06)

Dudley said he caught all five of his day-2 weigh-in fish on different baits than the ones that produced for him the previous day.

"I had to mix it up," he said. "I fished totally different. Yesterday they bit pretty much all day, but today it didn't get good until the afternoon."

His bag contained all largemouths, the biggest of which was a 4-pounder.

"What's happening is we've had 2 slick-calm days and the smallmouth guys are crushing them. You can go around looking and see a ton of smallmouth on beds. You let it get windy, and you'll see those smallmouth boys drop off big-time."

Andy Morgan clinched his third Angler of the Year title with a 16-14 stringer.

He knows he has a tough row to hoe in order to chase down Martin.

"I don't like being 4 pounds behind – on a northern fishery, that's a lot. It's a pretty big deficit, but I weighed 24-06 one day in 2012, so it's possible."

10th: Some Variety for Morgan

> Day 2: 5, 16-14 (10, 35-00)

Morgan nailed down his latest points title with a sack that contained three largemouiths and two smallmouths.

"This one's just as sweet as the other ones," he said. "I started the season with two 40-something finishes and I never even thought about it until after Kentucky Lake.

"It was a longshot early in the season and I knew I'd probably have to make the (Top-20 cut) in the last four to have a chance. Now it's sort of like, 'Well, I'll be damned ..."

He caught 20 keepers on day 2, including four sight-fish (two of those went to the scale. His biggest weighed 3 3/4 and he incurred an 8-ounce penalty for two dead fish.

"One of my better largemouth I hooked in the tongue and it died on me, and my biggest smallmouth died, too. I don't know what happened with that one."

He doesn't feel like he has much of a chance to win this event.

"I'm going to roll the dice and go down to Ticonderoga and enjoy the day."

47th: Davis' Bite Dried Up

> Day 2: 5, 5, 12-04 (10, 32-01)

Alex Davis' weight was off by 7 1/2 pounds from day 1 and he tumbled from a tie for 3rd place to 47th.

"I just didn't get the bites," he said. "I don't really know what happened. I think the fish are moving – they're post-spawn and they're heading out. I didn't adjust well and by the time I figured out what was going on, I only had about an hour and a half to fish. I'm not a smallmouth fisherman, and that showed today.

"Yesterday I had about 35 bites and today I had probably 10. I had two that were 3 1/2- to 4-pounders come off."

He caught most of his fish with a Jackall Rhythm swimbait.

Notable

> Day 2 stats – 160 anglers, 158 limits, 1 four, 1 two.

> Jay Yelas concluded his worst professional season with a 110th-place finish – his third triple-digit placement of the year. A bad boat draw hindered him on day 1 and he was unable to generate any quality bites on day 2. To read his competition recap, click here.
