Every Thursday since February, Steve Floyd has left the central Ohio office of the mortgage-lending firm where he’s a vice president and headed south to Paris, Tenn. It’s a 6-hour drive door to door to his vacation home near Kentucky Lake.
During his time in Paris, he gets to visit with son, Cole, who attends nearby Bethel University and is on the school’s bass fishing team. He also gets to spend time on the water, trying to get tuned into the seasonal patterns of Kentucky Lake’s massive population of bass.
While he likes to fish offshore during the summer, Floyd prefers the springtime bite when the fish are shallow.
“I’ve been coming here my whole life in April and May,” he said. “I always come here and go flipping. It’s my favorite thing to do.”
He put his favorite technique to good use last weekend as he flipped his way to an impressive come-from-behind win at the Kentucky Lake Central FLW Series. Trailing day-2 leader Travis Fox by more than 9 pounds, Floyd caught a final day-best 19-08 to finish with 51-02, which was good enough to hold off two accomplished FLW Tour pros with extensive history on the Tennessee River – he beat Ramie Colson Jr. by 5 ounces and was 2-03 better than Mark Rose.
“It’s a dream come true to beat these guys flipping,” Floyd said. “The money is awesome and nobody will say it’s not. To be able to come here and as a man it’s nice to be able to accomplish something like this. People know you’re legit, especially doing it the way I like to do it. That was kind of nice.”
Family Affair
It was also nice to have his three sons – 17-year-old Wyatt, 19-year-old Cole and 21-year-old Dalton – on the water following him around on the final day. He also pre-fished before the tournament with his father.
“He’s the one that got me into bass fishing so it was neat to spend time in the boat with him because at his age, he doesn’t get out anymore,” Floyd added.
Floyd is no stranger to high-stakes tournament fishing. He competed in 11 FLW Tour events from 1997-99 and has been a regular competitor in the BFL Hoosier and Buckeye divisions – last year, he won a LBL BFL on Kentucky Lake in early May. He opted to step away from the Tour when his sons were getting to be school age.
“My boys started getting older and at the time I owned my own business,” he said. “I had family obligations to take care of, but I fished with them in team tournaments around home. It’s always been a family deal. Now, maybe I’ll get back into it more.”
He gets a taste of competition during his weekly visits to Kentucky. He has two Ranger boats and it’s common for he and one of his sons to team up against his other sons in a (mostly) friendly team tournament.
“They can kind of do anything,” Floyd said. “They can go to Erie and dropshot for smallies or come here and fish ledges or go to Guntersville and catch them in the grass. They’re more well-rounded than I am.”
Flip, Flip and Flip Some More
Floyd wasn’t planning to fish the FLW Series until he saw the Central Division schedule that featured a late April stop at Kentucky Lake. He posted a 14th-place finish at Lake Dardanelle in March and is now third in points after his victory. Lake of the Ozarks will host the final Central Division event in early October.
“When I saw the schedule and they had Kentucky Lake in late April, that was a big motivator,” he said. “Finishing 14th at Dardanelle gave me more motivation. Now, there’s one more and a chance to win the points title.”
Floyd said his experience during the spring paid off last week.
“I put my time in and found areas that had them,” he said. “I ran south (toward the Interstate 40 bridge) to get away from the crowds. That’s where I found they were in the real shallow bushes.
“I slowed way down in areas I’d found in practice. I was real methodical and took my time and slowed down and didn’t get in a hurry.”
Once the tournament started, he totaled 20 keepers per day.
“Most of them were 2 1/2- to 3-pounders, but each day I had a big bite,” he said.
Pattern Notes
For Floyd, success last week was rooted in making as many flips as possible into the bushes. He shuddered to think how many flips he made over the course of the event, but he got a key big bite each day, including an 8 1/2-pound kicker on the final day that carried him to the win.
His favorite part about that particular fish? That his kids were nearby watching the whole thing go down.
“It was awesome,” he said. “That’s a fish of a lifetime to catch flipping to win a tournament. It was about noon and I was flipping to a bush in about a foot of water. I felt the bite and I set the hook and this 8-pounder comes roaring out of this bush. My partner netted it – it all happened so fast. My three boys were right there in my other Ranger following me. They were 20 yards away from me when I caught it. It was quite a celebration on the water.
“I still didn’t think I was going to win. I was 9 pounds back going into (Saturday). I also lost a 4 late in the day that I thought would hurt me.”
> With the lake at summer pool and the water level having been stable for a week, the shallow bushes became a magnet for fish looking for cover.
“It wasn’t high enough for there to be a real good flipping bite, but it’d been stable for so long that they felt comfortable up there,” he said.
