Palaniuk Moves To Top With 21-Pound Stringer

Perhaps next time the Bassmaster Elite Series visits the Detroit area, the event should be named after the St. Clair River instead of the lake of the same moniker. As was the case in 2013, the heaviest bags are coming from the moving water that emanates from the southern tip of Lake Huron.

Leader Brandon Palaniuk, who's compiled a 44-05 totals for 2 days, is sharing a stretch of the river with 2nd-place James Elam (43-12). Alton Jones (3rd, 43-12), Casey Scanlon (4th, 41-04) and Jonathon VanDam (7th, 39-09) are about a mile upstream, basically taking turns making the same drift.

Now the question is whether it will hold up over the weekend. Several of the aforementioned competitors had to go elsewhere to pick up their fifth keeper on day 2.

"There's not nearly as many fish there this time," said Jones, who fished the same locale en route to a 3rd-place finish 2 years ago. "A big factor is going to be whether somebody can catch five of them up there.

"That won't be easy to do. It wasn't easy today."

Palaniuk caught 21-01 on Friday to take over the top slot and Elam bagged 20-05 to remain in the No. 2 position. Jones, the day-1 leader, managed 17-14 and swapped positions with Palaniuk.

Scanlon's 19-04 stringer kept him at No. 4. Chad Pipkens, who's running the other direction to Lake Erie, caught 22-01 to jump from 14th to 5th.

Here's how the Top 12 stacks up at the midway point, with deficit margins from the leader indicated by red numbers in parentheses:

Aaron Martens caught his second straight 18 1/2-pound bag from Huron to tighten his stranglehold on the No. 1 spot in the Angler of the Year (AOY) race. He moved up eight places to 16th and said he might take a more conservative approach to day 3 by remaining in St. Clair, where he's confident that he can catch at least 15 pounds.

His lead in the AOY race is now a whopping 93 points and he could secure his third career crown on day 3. A swing of no more than 50 points will be possible at next month's AOY Championship derby at Sturgeon Bay in Wisconsin.

The sun made an appearance today (bright conditions normally enhance the smallmouth bite in the Great Lakes region), but it had little impact on the overall weights. In fact, the number needed to claim the 50th and final spot in the first cut (32-08) was precisely doubled from day 1.

Pipkens, Shryock, Smith and Evers were the newcomers to the Top 12 on day 2. Shryock, who moved up 31 places, tied Pipkens for best bag of the day. The 69-year-old Smith, who's 101st in the points race, will go out on day 3 bidding to make his first 12-cut since the inception of the Elite Series in 2006.

Falling out of the Top 12 were Brandon Lester (4th to 68th with three fish for 8-01), Micah Frazier (6th to 45th, 12-04), Matt Herren (10th to 20th, 17-01) and Charlie Hartley (11th to 14th, 18-13).

The gray skies that dominated day 1 will return on Saturday and remain throughout the event. The air temperature will top out around 80 degrees and the wind, which is expected to reach double digits in velocity after barely causing a surface ripple on day 2, will blow from a southerly direction.

The winner will be determined Sunday based on highest 4-day weight.

Palaniuk Stayed the Course

> Day 2: 5, 21-01 (10, 44-05)

The locale that Palaniuk is sharing with Elam gave him two fish today that combined to weigh more than 11 pounds (a 5-11 and a 5-07). He took big-fish honors for the second consecutive day.

"I fished the exact same place with the exact same baits – pretty much everything was exactly the same," he said. "I did end up having to catch my fifth keeper in St. Clair. I only had four at 2:55 with a 3:20 check-in, and I caught several keepers after I got back.

"Today it seemed like (the spot below Huron) went dry. I don't feel like we've caught them all, but it seemed like they'd moved. Maybe tomorrow they'll move back.

"Bait's real important there – if the bait moves in, the (smallmouths) move with them," he continued. "It's kind of a fickle deal there."

He caught 10 keepers for the day. If he has to find other accommodations tomorrow, he thinks he'll fare okay.

"I've got a few other areas, but none that I have the same amount of confidence in. One fish today came from another place and I caught a 6-pounder from a different area in practice.

"I'm just targeting areas where I feel I can get bites that are 4 pounds and over."

2nd: Elam Lost Several

> Day 2: 5, 20-05 (10, 43-12)

Elam's bag might've been a bit heftier had he not lost five quality fish from the place where he and Palaniuk are loading up.

"I could feel their heads shake, and they were big," he said of the ones that got away. "They were every bit of 4 pounds."

His assessment of that prime location was the same as Palaniuk's – most of the big smallmouths moved out at some point during the day. He came back to St. Clair to complete his limit, then culled that 14 1/2-incher shortly thereafter.

"I went to one last spot with 10 minutes left and hooked a 4 1/2-pounder. That was pure luck."

He's scrapping for every point he can get in a quest to make the 2016 Classic that'll be held in his home state (Grand Lake in Oklahoma), so he won't hesitate to move if his hot spot doesn't produce in the first couple hours of day 3.

"If I can't catch three or four there, then I feel like I have to do something else to get at least 15 pounds and try to make the Top 12. I've got other stuff I can go to, but it's not that caliber. A lot's going to depend on if they're there or not.

"Smallmouth fishing isn't rocket science – if there's a wad of them there and you get a bait in front of them, you don't have to beg them to bite."

3rd: Jones Scored Early

Jones caught his three biggest fish of the day on his first four drifts.

"Then it got tougher," he said. "I think I know why, but I'm not ready to talk about it yet. If it does set up right tomorrow, then I will know why."

He said the stretch that he, JVD and Scanlon are fishing is about 300 yards long with a 50-yard sweet spot in the middle that produces most of the best fish.

"It's getting a lot of pressure and it'll be interesting to see how it plays out," he said. "A real big key could be somebody finding another spot in the same area that's loaded."

His bag was topped by a 4 1/4-pounder. He missed a few bites, but doesn't know whether any would've aided him.

"They weren't committing to the bait today like they had been. Hopefully tomorrow, they'll commit."

5th: Less Stress for Pipkens

> Day 2: 5, 22-01 (10, 40-13)

Pipkens didn't have a fish until 9:30 on day and didn't box a limit until noon. He had five in his livewell after a half-hour of fishing on day 2 from the place where he'd concluded the previous day.

"I caught them there really quick today," he said. "It was literally every cast for awhile."

His bag included a 5-pounder and a couple of 4s. He caught 12 keepers and lost a couple, but doesn't think the ones that escaped would've helped his cause.

He has no competition for his best places on Erie.

"I saw a couple boats during the day, but most of the time I can look in either direction and not see anybody," he said. "There's not a bunch of fish out there – it's just one here and one there.

"When it gets tough, you just have to cycle around and hit the right pieces (of cover). There aren't a lot of bites to be had, but when you do get one, it's a good one."

He came into the derby at No. 59 in the points, so he can't falter too badly tomorrow and still make the AOY Championship.

"My goal wasn't to win the tournament, it was to make they AOY thing and get back in contention for the Classic. If I can catch 11 or 12 pounds tomorrow I should make the (AOY Championship) for sure, and if I still have a chance to win I'll put my head down and go from there."

45th: No Good Ones for Frazier

Frazier, who's fishing in St. Clair, saw his weight fall off by more than 8 pounds from the previous day.

"I just didn't catch any good ones – it's as simple as that," he said. "Other guys around me caught good bags, so they're still there. It's just really random."

He had nothing in his day-2 bag that exceeded 3 pounds.

"I'll go back out there tomorrow, but I'm going to try a lot of different things. I'll throw some reaction baits and cover more water. The big ones might've moved and if I can run into them again, I could catch a couple real quick."

> Day 2 stats – 107 anglers, 95 limits (2 fewer than day 1), 5 fours, 5 threes, 2 zeroes (2 more than day 1).

> Chris Lane, the 2013 winner, is in 30th place. He hasn't visited the area that Jones agreed to share with him 2 years ago when Lane was on a desperate quest to make the 2014 Classic on his home lake (Guntersville). "He agreed to leave it alone and let me take my crack at it this time," Jones said. "That shows what kind of class act Chris Lane is."

> The 50th-place cut position was a tie between Matt Reed and Mike Iaconelli – both caught bags weighing 17-01 and 15-07 for 32-08 totals. The fourth tiebreaker, most live fish weighed, had to be used. Reed prevailed 10-9.
