It’s been a pretty good month so far for Zack Birge.

Back in the first week of March, he was the top-finishing rookie at the Lake Toho FLW Tour with a 13th-place showing. The following Saturday, he caught 29-01 to win an Okie Division BFL at Grand Lake in Oklahoma. This week, he’s worked his way to the top of the leaderboard at the halfway point of the Tour event at Smith Lake.

Thanks to a 17-14 stringer today that was eclipsed by just one other pro, Birge moved up two spots and into the lead with 36-13 through 2 days. He’s a pound ahead of day-1 leader Drew Benton, who bagged 15-01 Friday.

Performing under pressure is nothing new for Birge. While a student at Oklahoma State, he and Blake Flurry won the 2012 Bassmaster College championship and last fall, Birge won the Rayovac Series championship, which earned him a spot in this year’s Forrest Wood Cup.

“This is going awesome,” said Birge, who’s weighed in all largemouth so far, a feat in itself considering the quality and quantity of spotted bass that swim in Smith. “I just have a lot of momentum right now and I want to take it as far as I can. I caught beyond what I expected today and if it happens again tomorrow, it’ll be awesome, but I’m shooting more for 12 or 13 pounds.”

Clark Wendlandt jumped up to 3rd from 8th after day 1 thanks to a 17-05 sack that has him at 33-08. Tracy Adams caught 13-03 to maintain his 4th-place position with 31-12. Scott Wiley added 16-02 and brought his total to 31-10, good enough for 5th. While Birge has a 5-pound cushion on Adams in 4th place, just 14 ounces separates Adams from reigning Angler of the Year Andy Morgan in 10th.

Here's a look at the Top 10 after day 2, with deficit margin from Birge indicated by red numbers in parentheses:

1. Zack Birge: 36-13
2. Drew Benton: 35-13 (1-00)
3. Clark Wendlandt: 33-08 (3-05)
4. Tracy Adams: 31-12 (5-01)
5. Scott Wiley: 31-10 (5-03)
6. Ish Monroe: 31-07 (5-06)
7. Clayton Batts: 31-06 (5-07)
8. Jason Reyes: 31-06 (5-07)
9. Scott Martin: 30-15 (5-14)
10. Andy Morgan: 30-14 (5-15)

Three pros – Birge, Luke Clausen and Wesley Strader – secured their second straight Top-20 finish with today’s effort. Clausen did it with a solid 17-02 stringer that bumped him up 36 spots to 14th. Jason Reyes made a similar jump, coming from 42nd to 8th behind the day’s heaviest bag that weighed 18-04. Jayme Rampey advanced 32 places and made the weekend in 11th with a 17-05 stringer.

After a 15-11 bag had him in 10th after day 1, Jim Tutt fell to 79th and out of check range with a 5-12 limit that gave him 21-07.

The gloom and doom that surrounded Friday’s weather report didn’t seem to have a tremendous impact on the fishing. While there were no 20-pound bags to show off, everybody continues to be impressed with the quality of fish being caught around the lake, whether in the dirty water up in the rivers that feed the lake or in the countless pockets where the higher water has flooded hundreds of bushes, clumps of buck brush and laydowns, giving fish plenty of cover and the pros plenty of targets.

The field will be cut to the Top 10 after Saturday and the winner will be determined Sunday based on highest cumulative weight.

Topwaters Key For Birge

> Day 2: 5, 17-14 (10, 36-13)

Birge said there were very few differences from day 1 other than the order in which he fished his key areas. He caught a limit within a couple hours this morning, then waited for the sun to burn through before he started working on his largemouth water.

“Because of my boat number and being in the late draw, I figured somebody would’ve gotten there first and I didn’t want to fish behind somebody or encroach on people,” he said. “I made a long run to one spot and there was one other boat in there and we kind of fished around each other.”

He caught one on his third cast with a buzzbait, then caught one here and there for the next 2 hours to finish his first limit.

“The water temperature had dropped 3 degrees, but once the sun broke out, I got a couple of big bites,” he added. “I caught one on a frog at 11 and had a big one on a buzzbait around noon. After that, it was just little flurries. I’d catch two, then go 30 minutes and catch a couple more.”

He then moved back to where he started Thursday and made a pass through it with a frog, but didn’t get a bite.

“That didn’t sit well with me so I went back through it with a buzzbait and caught eight keepers and culled three times,” he said. “It’s crazy how much it changes every day.”

His plan for Saturday is to try to get a limit of spots in the boat right away, then wait for the air temperature to rise before he starts targeting largemouths.

“Even if it cools off, I’m not too worried about it,” he said. “These fish are on beds. Even with how cold it got overnight, I still saw fish cruising and tomorrow I figure it’ll be the same deal. I just have to be in right place at the right time.”

Drew Benton might focus primarily on spotted bass on Saturday.

2nd: Benton Might Chase Spots

> Day 2: 5, 15-01 (10, 35-13)

Benton had an interesting take on why the bed fish he tried to catch this morning didn’t seem to be in a cooperative mood.

“It’s like you after you get up in the morning and step outside on a cold day,” he said. “You feel that chill and it just shocks you a bit. Those fish seemed to act the same way. When I pulled in there, it was like they were in a trance. After it warmed up a little, they locked back down and their fins were moving a little more.”

Still, it was a grind for the day-1 leader, who left his sight-fishing program pretty quickly and put together a limit that included a couple 3-pound spots.

“About 11, I headed back to those beds and with the sun out, that helped tremendously,” he said. “I was able to catch a few of them.”

His biggest was around 4 pounds, but tomorrow he senses it might be time to switch gears.

“I’m changing the plan tomorrow,” he said. “When I was in the pocket where I caught that 4-pound largemouth, I saw a bunch of big spots come up schooling and my co-angler actually caught one so I’m going to start there in the morning. If everything goes as planned, I think I can catch a big bag of spots.”

He said a jerkbait, a walking bait and a Bagley square-bill crankbait have been key for so far and he thinks the jerkbait could be a big factor on Saturday.

“I think as the weekend goes on, I don’t know how warm it’s supposed to get by Sunday, but with the wind, the jerkbait tomorrow could be big player,” he added.

3rd: Wendlandt’s Confidence Building

> Day 2: 5, 17-05 (10, 33-08)

Wendlandt didn’t make any adjustments to his strategy from day 1 and was one of eight anglers in the Top 20 to catch a bigger stringer today. Helping his cause was a 5-11 largemouth that anchored his bag.

“I feel great about it,” he said. “The tournament, so far, has come my way and I’ve found an area that’s pretty good and it seems to be getting better as the tournament has gone along. Catching 17 is a big weight here and I’d be thrilled to catch 14 or 15 the next couple days.”

Despite his weight going up, he felt like he caught a better caliber of fish on Thursday.

“I really had a better day Thursday, but that 5-11 set the stage for me today,” he said. “I feel like I caught more quality fish yesterday. The area I’m fishing is pretty big so I don’t think I’ll run out of fish. It could change, but it’s about making the right decisions at the right time.”

He declined to divulge much about his technique or bait details, but he is targeting pre-spawn and spawning fish.

“I have some confidence in what I’m doing,” he said. “I can sight-fish, too, but I’m hoping to not have to rely on that.”

He culled about eight times today and wound up weighing two spotted bass and three largemouth. The weather, in his estimation, didn’t have a big impact on how the fish bit today and he hopes it stays that way.

“I just don’t think the weather will have a lot to do with it,” he added. “These fish are bedding 7 or 8 feet (deep) and the temperature isn’t going to change all that much down there. The way I see it, I don’t see the weather changing it that much. It’s that time of year and they want to spawn pretty bad.”

A big key to Clark Wendlandt's day-2 bag was this 5-11 brute.

4th: Adams Thought He Would Slip

> Day 2: 5, 13-03 (10, 31-12)

Adams was thinking he’d need 15 pounds today to maintain his spot in the Top 5. As it turns out, 13-03 did the trick.

“I was surprised,” he said. “I figured there’d be a lot of 12s and 13s. There were a bunch of 14s and 15s.”

He’s been impressed with how the lake has kicked out quality fish and stringers despite the fishing pressure.

“I’ve fished a few events here over the years, from FLW events and some B.A.S.S. Opens and it’s a lot better than I’ve ever seen it,” he said. “Part of it is the timing is perfect right now. A month ago, it was terrible cold here and now it’s warmed up and they’re all heading to the bank. We have everything going for us right now.”

He stuck with his same plan from Thursday, which was to target some suspended fish along with sight-fishing.

“The wind hurt me today,” he added. “I had a hard time getting the bait in there where I wanted it. I have to fish slow to catch the better ones there. I could go to some areas and it’d be calm, but it wasn’t where I wanted to be.”

His three best specimens came from a group of suspended fish that have proven to be finicky.

“They’re not out in deep water, but they’re not that far down either,” he said. “I’m having to use a real light weight because if I go to a bigger weight or try to swim something through them, I can’t get bit, but it’s usually a good one there if I get them to bite.”

5th: Wiley Having a Blast

> Day 2: 5, 16-02 (10, 31-10)

Wiley, who’s in line to post his best Tour finish, has been building momentum fishing dirty water in the river and thinks having the whole area to himself could be a key going forward.

“It feels really good to finally put it all together,” he said. “I’ve had some tournaments where I’d catch them good one day and not the next or vice versa. I’m just making good decisions and that’s all fishing is about and doing what you need to be doing.”

He’s gotten a feel that his area is flush with a mix of pre-spawn and spawning fish along with some that are further along in the process. The water temperature has remained pretty steady in the low 60s, which also helps.

“I caught a 4-pounder today that was post-spawn,” he said. “Then I turned around and caught one that was about ready to bust. I’m in a transition area where they’re coming and going, but it’s too dirty to see them. You just have to keep chunking it around until you come across one.”

He culled three times during a noontime flurry on one of his best spots.

“I caught a 3 and then a 5-pounder and I said, ‘It’s time to get out of here,’” he said. “I hope I didn’t burn it up too bad. I have three areas I’ve been fishing and I’m going to milk them for all they’re worth tomorrow.”

14th: Big Ones Elusive For Clausen

> Day 2: 5, 17-02 (10, 29-11)

Clausen says he could do a clinic on how to catch 2 1/2-pounders at Smith Lake. He’d be more interested, though, in learning from someone else how to entice the bigger fish to bite. Only four other anglers caught bigger stringers than Clausen today, but he’s still scratching his head at what he needs to do in order to put bigger specimens in the boat.

“Any time I catch something bigger than 2 1/2 pounds, I feel like it’s just luck,” he said. “I don’t know what the deal is to catch bigger ones. I caught a big spot today, but it was just totally random. My co-angler caught three 3 1/2-pounders behind me doing the same thing. I’m just not getting enough big bites and it’s frustrating.”

He said a jerkbait, a swimbait and a worm have produced the majority of his fish so far and he thinks he’s better off targeting spots than investing much time in focusing on largemouth locales.

“I weighed two largemouth yesterday, but I think that’s fizzling,” he said. “Those largemouth were up there and they’re getting so much pressure. I’m sure I could catch one if I really tried, but like the spots I’m catching, they’re mostly 2-1/2 pounders. I think I have a better chance of catching a 3 1/2-pound spot than a largemouth that size.”

80th: Quantity, Not Quality for Wilson

> Day 2: 5, 11-05 (10, 21-07)

Two years ago, Barry Wilson tried to build his Smith Lake game plan around largemouths. It worked for one day, but he zeroed on day 2 and wound up 115th. This time around, he vowed to not fall prey to that thinking again. It worked for the most part, except he couldn’t seem to trigger more than a couple good fish a day to bite.

“I caught two big fish each day, but couldn’t get anything to go with them,” he said. “Today, I had a 4 and a 3 1/2 and the other three were small ones. Yesterday, I had a 3 1/2 and a 3 and nothing to go with them.”

He caught multiple limits of spots each day, all on a herring-imitation swimbait, but couldn’t crack the 11 1/2-pound mark either day.
