A back injury last year kept Michael Marini off the water for the most part and following surgery last August, he vowed to come back stronger than ever.
The resident of Slingerlands, N.Y., a suburb of Albany, is a veteran of plenty of local and team tournaments around the Capital District, but last week he went toe to toe with a field of 140-plus anglers at the Lake Champlain Northern Rayovac Series and proved again why the southern end of Champlain continues to be a bass fishing Mecca.
His back held up and so did his primary spot, from which he pulled an average of nearly 19 pounds per day to claim his first Rayovac Series win with a 3-day total of 57-07, which was 12 ounces better than runner-up Chris Johnston.
His primary bait was a 5-inch Yamamoto Senko Texas-rigged or wacky-rigged and cast to holes or pockets in milfoil or around the outer edge of grass lines.
"I'm still soaking it all in," Marini said. "I live about 2 hours and 20 minutes from the Ticonderoga area so I fish a lot of tournaments up that way and I know it pretty well. I fished the Rayovac at Champlain a couple years ago and was on good fish, but made some bad decisions. Last week, everything worked out for me."
Here's how he did it.
Practice
Over the last 5 years, Marini says the grass around Ticonderoga has changed significantly. From the effects of SuperStorm Sandy a couple years ago to the long winter that gripped the northeast this year, it's all had an impact on the proliferation of grass on Champlain's southern end.
"Being a local angler, I pretty much know that area pretty intricately and when I say it changes daily, it changes daily," he said. "The weeds aren't as prolific as they've been in years past and it's harder right now to find the right kind of wees and the right kind of weed with fish in it. There was a lot of dead water in between fish in practice. Bites were few and far between so when you got one, you really had to pay attention to the factors and location."
He did his best to keep tabs on a few schools of fish near Ticonderoga over the month leading up to the tournament.
"Some schools I lost and couldn't find them again, but I also found some smaller schools and another school I found was a lot bigger than I thought it was," he said, referring to the area that eventually produced his winning stringers.
During practice, he got a sense that the fish weren't quite all the way into their summer pattern. Typically, he says the fish will group up according to size once the water has stabilized and the fish get into their summertime routine.
"That wasn't the case in practice," he said. "I had to go through numbers of smaller fish to get to some bigger fish. About 10 days to 2 weeks before the tournament, those better fish were loners and most of the fish were immediate post-spawners. It seemed like the spawn was really drawn out this year. I was catching immediate post-spawn females with raw tails that were skinny."
He noted that he typically prefers to flip and punch the heavy mats that form on the southern end of the lake this time of year, but the fish just weren't "up in the junk yet," he said. "That forced me to move outside a bit to the outer weed lines."
The area he eventually identified as his primary school was about the size of a football field in some stained water in 4 1/2- to 6 1/2-foot depths with some matted milfoil.
"When I was targeting those schools in the tournament, I was getting 4s and 5s mixed in with 2-pounders," he said. "I stayed with it until it dried up. Lucikly, it didn't dry up. I was just amazed at the size of that school."

Weather conditions were clear and conducive to making the long run from Plattsburgh south to Ticonderoga on day 1 and Marini decided to start on what he called a community hole.
"I got in the mix and that was a big school of fish, but the pressure seemed to slow the bite and I only caught small fish there," he said.
He spent the first 2 hours there before moving to his key spot that he ultimately had to himself.
"With no pressure on that spot, I had my day-1 weight within an hour and immediately left," he said. "I tried a few other spots hoping to catch a big upgrade. When I decided to leave that spot I knew I had enough to put me in good position for day 2. I didn't want to stick around and try to hit a home run right away."
His 19-01 was good enough for 9th place following day 1 and he followed the same game plan on day 2, the only difference being a little bit more wind than what was forecast.
"I hit that community hole first and there were four other boats there," he said. "I gave it less than 45 minutes this time because once again I was catching only small fish. The bite was off because of the heavy pressure, plus there was a local tournament going out of Ticonderoga (on Saturday) and there were plenty of boats out pre-fishing."
He made a pass by his primary spot and noticed it was unoccupied, so he moved in and within 45 minutes he caught 18 1/2 pounds on the Senko and left.
"I was hoping it was enough to get me in the Top 10," he said. "I was a little nervous because I knew I had a bag similar to what I caught on day 1. Luckily enough, it was enough to bring me up to 4th."
Through the first 2 days, he'd accomplished one of his primary objectives: Manage the fish on his best area and still be in contention. He figures he spent a total of 3 hours over the first 2 days on his best spot, meaning he barely scratched the surface of what was there.
"I didn't realize it was the winning spot until day 3," he added.
The final day arrived and Marini said he was so amped up, his roommate had to tell him to settle down.
"I woke up and was so wired I couldn't calm down," he said. "I have a stereo on the boat that I usually use to settle me down and get me in a groove. When I got to the boat, I told my co-angler I'd have it on and that it doesn't spook the fish. My co-angler was a 16-year-old kid so there was a bit of a generation gap when it came to music."
The bite was slow to start the final day, forcing the charged-up Marini to slow down his presentations and retrieve rates. To lighten the mood and relieve some of the pressure, he began quizzing his co-angler on movie trivia if a song from a certain soundtrack came on the radio.
"I had to work harder for the bites," he said. "The fish were there, but the water was dead flat and you can't chop up the grass with the trolling motor when it's flat like that.
"I was committed to that spot all day. I figured I'd stay until I caught a good weight or felt like I'd worn it out. I had a backup spot within sight of my primary area so I felt pretty good about where I was at."
He went the whole tournament without weighing in a 5-pounder as his big fish each day were consistently in the 4 1/2-pound range. His 19-14 bag on day 3 was his heaviest stringer of the event.
Winning Pattern Notes
> Marini said the majority of his bites came out away from the matted milfoil and slop. When he was fishing thicker vegetation, he opted for the Texas-rigged Senko below a 1/2-ounce weight. When he worked out away from the thick stuff, he went with a wacky-rigged Senko that he would pitch to holes and pockets. Sometimes, he said a dead-stick presentation was effective as well.
"I never went into the heavy mats and punched," he said. "That's my true love and strength. It took all I had to not go in there and do that."
He thinks in a couple weeks, probably about the time of the Bassmaster Northern Open at Champlain, those fish will be tucked under the thick mats.
"The water has been dropping about 18 inches over the last week and a half and once it stabilizes, that's when they'll get settled into those areas where they want to be," he added.

> While he declined to share the color of the Senko he was throwing, he said he opted for a brighter hue in the stained water to give the fish a different look amidst all the fishing pressure.
The Bottom Line
> Main factor in his success – "The time on the water pre-fishing and locating the fish. For the whole tournament, I had four or five spots that I had confidence in. I worked three of those five spots on days 1 and 2 and on day 3 I just worked that key spot and it never dried up."
> Performance edge – "My Bass Cat Puma FTD and Yamaha 250 SHO worked great all week and my Power-Poles were key down in that area when you wanted to work over an area and not let the wind blow you through it too fast. Luckily everything held up and my equipment got me there and back."
