This is more like it.
After day 1 saw Mike Iaconelli open everyone’s eyes with a 20-plus pound bag that gave him nearly a 3 1/2-pound lead, things tightened up considerably on day 2 of the Oneida Lake Bassmaster Elite Series season finale.
Nobody came close to the 20-pound mark – Boyd Duckett’s 17-11 stringer topped the field today – and the result is a cramped leaderboard where just over 2 1/2 pounds separates the Top 12 anglers. Typically, Oneida is a place where that much of a cushion is tough to maintain, and this year appears to be following suit.
Randy Howell is the man on top now, using a 16-06 bag today to hit the halfway mark with 32-02. Duckett’s big stringer carried him to 2nd with a 31-06 total.
“Every ounce is going to count here,” said Howell, who’s chasing his fourth 12-cut of the season.
Scott Rook, in a push to make the Bassmaster Classic, had another solid day with 15-09 and stands 3rd with 31-00. Tommy Biffle, another angler making a Classic charge, is 4th with 30-14 while Iaconelli slipped to 5th after scrounging up 10-06 today for a 30-09 aggregate.
In terms of the Toyota Tundra B.A.S.S. Angler of the Year (AOY) race, Brent Chapman did nothing to hurt his chances of claiming his first career title. He caught 13-12 today and made the weekend in 6th. Those closest to him in the standings – Todd Faircloth (13th place) and Ott DeFoe (23rd) – each made the cut as well, but Chapman's lead over Faircloth now stands at 27 points.
Here's a look at the Top 12 after day 2 of competition, with deficit margin from the leader indicated by red numbers in parentheses:
1. Randy Howell: 32-02
2. Boyd Duckett: 31-06 (00-12)
3. Scott Rook: 31-00 (1-02)
4. Tommy Biffle: 30-14 (1-04)
5. Mike Iaconelli: 30-09 (1-09)
6. Brent Chapman: 30-08 (1-10)
7. Brandon Palaniuk: 30-03 (1-15)
8. Terry Scroggins: 30-01 (2-01)
9. Matt Herren: 30-00 (2-02)
10. Jason Quinn: 29-13 (2-05)
11. Clark Reehm: 29-10 (2-08)
12. Nate Wellman: 29-09 (2-09)
While some anglers helped their Classic chances, others fell out of contention.
Terry Butcher went out today in a tie for 27th and in good position to clinch a trip to Grand Lake in his home state next February. But he checked in 11 minutes late, suffered an 11-pound penalty and finished 80th. The penalty knocked his weight down to 2-15 for the day. He fell to 51st in points.
After catching 16-06 on day 1 that had him in 3rd place, J. Todd Tucker zeroed today and finished 81st, knocking him out of contention for his first career Classic berth.
The consensus for most near the top of the standings was the fish bit better today than on day 1 and there are signs it may continue to pick up. The smallmouth continue to be the steady source of weight, but there are still some targeting just green fish.
The Top 49 will fish tomorrow and the Top 12 following day 3 will fish Sunday, when the winner will be determined by highest cumulative weight. The weigh-in scene for the weekend will shift to the infield of the mile-long oval dirt track at the New York State Fairgrounds, as the New York State Fair will serve as the backdrop for the final 2 days.
Howell Dialed In
> Day 2: 5, 16-06 (10, 32-02)
Howell hasn’t pinpointed any kicker-type fish yet and he may not have to if the schools of 3 1/2-pounders he’s working on continue to produce the way they have.
It also sounds like he’s got other stuff to run to should he be unable to relocate today’s fish later on.
“I didn’t catch any fish today where I caught them yesterday,” he said. “I have 100 waypoints on this lake by now from all the years of fishing it and there are fish on a lot of them.
“All of the ones I caught them on yesterday, they either didn’t bite or they weren’t there today. There was a lot of floating grass on the areas I wanted to fish and I just couldn’t even fish them effectively. The fish could’ve been there, but every cast I’d get grass on the bait.”
He bailed out on that area and moved to where he was able to make more effective presentations. The fish seemed to approve, as a few times, he had multiple 3- and 4-pound-class fish follow his bait back to the boat.
“There are plenty of big smallmouth in the areas,” he said. “It’s just that they move. All of the ones I’m fishing are chasing shad, so they’re here today and gone tomorrow.”
He weighed four smallmouths and one largemouth today, but all five were between 3 1/4 and 3 1/2 pounds.
“As long as I keep moving around and finding them and as long as they keep eating the shad every day and I can find them, I’ll be okay,” he said. “Most everything in the schools I’m fishing for are 3 to 3 1/2-pounders. That’s the good thing. I’m not having to catch little ones and cull out. The first five I catch usually are the five I bring in.”
Boyd Duckett's stringer was helped by this 5-01 giant.
2nd: Duckett Has Company
> Day 2: 5, 17-11 (10, 31-06)
Duckett is sharing water – amicably so far – with at least three other competitors, but he hasn’t seen it as a hindrance yet.
“We’re in the back of a bay where there is a canal with boats coming in and out of it, but boat traffic doesn’t matter at most places,” he said. “We all went straight to it the first morning and we all said, ‘Okay, what we’re going to do is fish on top of each other,’ and that way we can move around like we want to. We’ve done that for 2 days and everything’s great.”
The bay holds a mix of smallmouth and largemouth, but he’s spending most of his time targeting the latter. He had two good largemouths on day 1 and his 5-01 kicker today was the big fish of day 2.
“We’re all fishing everything,” he said. “If they come up, we all run to them. We’re all in very close. If they come up schooling, we’ll throw on top of each other. It’s just a big mess of white rods.
“I’m fishing for largemouth a little more than they are and that takes a long, long time – sometimes an hour or more between bites. I’ve put a lot more time in doing that. That’s probably the difference for me.”
3rd: Rook In Smallmouth Mode
> Day 2: 5, 15-09 (10, 31-00)
Rook’s morning bite was much better today than day 1, but his afternoon bite tailed off. Still, he’s averaged 15 1/2 pounds through 2 days and he’s caught nothing but smallmouth so far – 13 each day.
He had a limit by about 8:30 and had his two best fish early on then spent the rest of morning catching nothing but 2-pounders.
“It got real slow this afternoon,” he said. “I had a 4-hour stretch where I had four bites, but I culled every one of them. I’m just in one area going back and forth and every time I pull one, there’s one of equal size swimming with it so I feel like there’s some more there.”
He’s got the area he’s fishing mostly to himself but the key he’s noticed to his bites is that the fish seem to be taking his bait immediately after it lands.
“The bait I’m throwing, when I throw it out there and it hits the water and I pick up on it, and that’s where 90 percent of bites happen,” he said. “I think they’re attracted to the splash. It’s been that way throughout practice. I might as well just reel in after I pick up on it and there’s nothing there. I don’t get any bites otherwise. I’ve seen that before with smallmouth.”
Tommy Biffle has put himself in good position to make the Classic next year.
4th: Biffle Went Small
> Day 2: 5, 16-04 (10, 30-14)
Biffle said he was torn between targeting areas with largemouth versus smallmouth, but eventually settled on the brown fish today and it has him just over a pound out of the lead.
“I didn’t think I could catch 3-pound average largemouth so I smallmouth-fished today,” he said.
The places he saw smallmouth at yesterday were vacant this morning, but when he returned to those locales in the afternoon, so had the fish.
His bag consisted of four smallies and one largemouth today and he concentrated mostly on fishing in 8 feet of water. The Oklahoman’s strong first 2 days have gone a long way in helping him cement a spot in next year’s Classic, which’ll be held at Grand Lake, not too far from his home in Wagoner, Okla.
“I came into this in 38th place (in points) and I had to make the Classic at Grand so I was just trying to hang in there and catch enough and hope enough guys fell out for me to make it,” he said. “Hopefully, I can catch some tomorrow and get that made. That’s the goal. Winning would be icing on the cake.”
5th: Ike Went Into Salvage Mode
> Day 2: 5, 10-06 (10, 30-09)
Iaconelli had an empty livewell at noon today and he was starting to run through his mind the potential problems that would arise if it remained that way the rest of the afternoon.
“I started thinking, ‘Okay, I had 20 pounds yesterday. If I don’t catch one today, I’m not going to make the cut which means I probably won't make the Classic,’” he said. “You start to go into emergency mode, so I went and fished some new water and got on the bank, put the trolling motor on high and fished a little finesse worm. In about 3 hours, I was able put together 10 pounds.”
The factor that he believes hampered his fish this morning was an east wind.
“The old saying is, ‘Wind from the east, they bite the least. Wind from the west, they bite the best,’” he said. “It’s super true and you saw that this morning. When that east wind died down, they started to eat.”
He weighed all smallmouths today after having a mixed stringer yesterday.
“The bottom line is I turned a day that could’ve been absolute (crap) into an okay performance,” he added. “I’m going to fish tomorrow and I remained in the Top 10. Worse things could’ve happened. I do have to go back tonight and re-think what I’m going to do tomorrow. I think I need about 15 pounds tomorrow to be in contention.
“Yesterday was a key day. When those largemouth were biting, I just kept whacking on them. You’re always torn between leaving a stretch and saving it for tomorrow, but yesterday I decided to swing on everything. It was a great decision, because today I got screwed. I’m still right there. It’s disappointing to a certain extent, but I get to play again and I’m still right there.”
6th: Different Day For Chapman
> Day 2: 5, 13-12 (10, 30-08)
The schooling fish that helped ignite Chapman's morning on day 1 didn’t turn on today, so he resorted to a topwater pattern to stay in the hunt for his second win of the season.
“I was catching schooling fish yesterday and I didn’t catch a single fish that way today,” he said.
He caught five on a topwater and another on a crankbait and once 10 a.m. hit, he didn’t swing another fish into his boat. One stretch he’s fishing in the morning, however, got clogged up with a lot of floating grass and he estimates a quarter of his casts were negated by it.
He missed what he thought was a 4-pounder later in the day as he set the hook a split-second early on his topwater plug.
“The good thing is I’m getting a few bites and hopefully I’ll have a better day tomorrow,” he said. “It was a little nerve-wracking at first when they weren’t schooling up, but once I got that fifth fish, I was really pretty relaxed.”
He mixed in a couple new spots and might add some additional new water to his rotation tomorrow if the need arises.
8th: Scroggins Not Fishing ‘Til He Sees ‘Em
> Day 2: 5, 15-01 (10, 30-01)
Terry Scroggins has fished the same way the first 2 days – offshore humps targeting smallmouths with his electronics – and he sees no reason to make any drastic changes heading into the weekend.
“I caught a few 3-pound largemouth in practice, but there are a lot of 3-pound smallmouth out there and they’re easier to catch so I just targeted them,” he said. “I practiced for largemouth, but historically when you come here and fish a 4-day event, the largemouth are going to run out before the 4 days are up. I knew that and I didn’t feel like I had anything strong enough to start on largemouth.”
He handled more than 20 keepers today, and he’s also sensing the fish are becoming more active as the weather stabilizes more.
“I think it’s getting better out there,” he said. “They’re moving around. Where I caught them yesterday, there was nothing there today and the humps I looked at yesterday where there were none, they were there today. They’re steadily moving and you just have to keep moving until you see them.”
10th: Quinn Looking for Repeat Of ‘09
> Day 2: 5, 16-11 (10, 29-13)
In 2009, Jason Quinn came to Oneida Lake for the final Elite Series event needing to make up 20 spots in the standings to qualify for the Classic. A feat many thought was impossible, he accomplished it.
He came to Oneida this week in a similar spot, sitting in 44th in points and needing to make up 12 or 13 positions depending on where the double-qualifiers landed in the standings.
Well, the South Carolina native is on his way to another rally after weighing 3 more pounds than he did on day 1. He did it by scrapping a largemouth program and going after smallmouth.
“I pushed the issue with the largemouth yesterday and on the first day of the tournaments here, too many largemouth get caught and at the end of the deal, only two or three guys are able to capitalize on them,” he said. “I spent way too much of my time here trying to make something happen with the largemouth because I had a good bite going.”
While he did run through about nine bites on day 1, the best being a 3-pounder, he more than doubled his catch rate today.
“My intention coming here was to try to make the Classic so I need to catch a big bag pretty much every day,” he added. “So I scrapped all that and went to the places I usually catch big smallmouth and they were there and I had a good day.”
He said the bite is starting to pick up now that the weather has stabilized after a few fronts moved through in the past week.
“With this being a northern lake that typically gets those smallmouths charged up and gets them to bite,” he said. “I don’t know what it does to this lake but it just completely shuts it off. As hot as it’s been the last few days, the bite’s starting to warm up. I’m really looking forward to the next 2 days."
Russ Lane likes how the lake is shaping up entering the weekend.
22nd: R. Lane Pacing Himself
> Day 2: 5, 16-00 (10, 27-10)
Russ Lane found himself in 65th place this morning, but he never considered hitting the panic button. He’s dialed in a flipping bite that seems to be getting better – just like he planned.
“I wouldn’t say I stumbled on day 1,” he said. “I practiced for a warming trend. I figured the water was going to clear up and start getting hot. It’s falling into place. I had a plan of being able to catch them better and better all week.”
He weighed all largemouth today fishing the same water as he did on day 1. He caught all of his fish flipping a Big Bite Baits YoDaddy.
“What happening out there is the water’s getting really hot and it’s clearing up very quickly,” he said. “It’s changing things. The fish that were scattered out there and roaming around are starting to get on cover and move shallower to find shade. It’s getting to be the way I like it.”
81st: Tucker Dejected
> Day 2: 0, 00 (5, 16-06)
Tucker thought he’d figured out the way to attract bites from schooling smallmouths and the odd largemouth based on his day-1 results.
But things changed drastically for him today and he failed catch a keeper and his season came to a disappointing end.
“Just a terrible day,” he said. “Everything just fell through. I tried not get spun out, but everything that’d been working for me all week just didn’t work today. It’s just my fault. I couldn’t make it happen.
He had some traffic in his area, but he’s not sure that turned the fish off. He did have a couple on, but they never saw the inside of his boat.
“I just couldn’t get anything going. It was extremely hard to get those fish to bite,” he added.
He was fishing a 3/4-ounce spinnerbait and letting it fall through the school and sometimes an odd largemouth would be underneath the school and he catch them.
“They didn’t school very good today, but I saw Howell and them were throwing topwaters and I just didn’t make the adjustments. I probably should have,” he said. “I had a lot of confidence in what I was doing and I’m hard-headed and thought I could make it happen. I never would’ve thought I would zero today, but that’s part of the business we’re in. It just sucks that a whole year goes down the drain in one day. It cost me $30,000 today between incentive money, the Classic, a check here and Angler of the Year money. It really wears on your mind. It's one of those things you have to suck it up and try not to let it bother you.”
