On day 1, Aaron Martens was the lone Bassmaster Elite Series angler to bring 20 pounds of Lake Michigan bass to the scales. Today, it seemed like 18 pounds was the elusive number as only Takahiro Omori broke that threshold.

Who knows what tomorrow will bring, but it’s safe to say things slowed down a bit on day 2 of the Lake Michigan Elite Series. Both Dean Rojas and Martens, who sit 1-2 in the standings now, saw their weights drop off by 2 and 3 pounds, respectively.

But that was to be expected with the heavy pressure being put on the upper reaches of the fishable portion of the Bay of Green Bay, where the majority of the anglers were stationed.

Rojas’ 17-14 catch today gave him 37-12 so far, enough to overtake Martens for the top spot. He’ll be looking to lock up his fourth 12-cut of the season tomorrow. Martens boxed 16-15 and has 36-15.

Michigan native Jonathon VanDam caught 17-07 and jumped to 3rd from 7th with 35-02 while Brandon Palaniuk used a 17-00 stringer to hold down 4th with 35-00. John Crews, Jr. and Greg Hackney are tied for 5th at 34-01.

Here's a look at the Top 12 entering the weekend, with the deficit margin from Rojas indicated by red numbers in parentheses:

1. Dean Rojas: 37-12
2. Aaron Martens: 36-15 (0-13)
3. Jonathon VanDam: 35-02 (2-10)
4. Brandon Palaniuk: 35-00 (2-12)
5 (tie). John Crews, Jr.: 34-01 (3-11)
5 (tie). Greg Hackney: 34-01 (3-11)
7. Chris Zaldain: 33-09 (4-03)
8. Ish Monroe: 32-02 (5-10)
9. Yusuke Miyazaki: 31-12 (6-00)
10. Ott DeFoe: 31-06 (6-06)
11. Tommy Biffle: 30-13 (6-15)
12 (tie). Terry Scroggins: 30-11 (7-01)
12 (tie). Chris Lane: 30-11 (7-01)

Todd Faircloth, who went out today in 3rd place and as the new leader in the Toyota Tundra B.A.S.S. Angler of the Year (AOY) standings, brought in just three fish for 7-08, giving him 25-11. He slipped inside the cut in 36th, but dropped to 3rd in the AOY chase after today.

Brent Chapman, who regained the AOY lead he relinquished to Faircloth after day 1, will fish tomorrow as well after today’s 14-10 stringer that gave him 28-08 overall, good for 23rd place.

Matt Herren, another AOY contender, was 5th after day 1, but weighed just two for 6-08 today. It was enough for him to make the weekend in 40th with 24-06.

Things toughened up throughout the fishable portion of Green Bay, starting with the winds this morning. Gone were the glassy conditions that made running around a joy on day 1. Many anglers reported a decrease in the number of bites and while some said they were getting better quality fish, others remarked that their fish had moved, a well-known trait of smallmouths.

Another solid day will earn Rojas his fourth 12-cut of the season.

While a few of the Top-50 have been working through the Fox River up around the De Pere Dam, expect most of the leaders to head back north for day 3.

The forecast for tomorrow calls for temperatures in the upper 80s and mostly sunny skies. More importantly, the offshore wind is expected to blow out of the northwest at 10 to 15 knots with waves in the 1- to 3-foot range. A storm cell is expected to push through the Green Bay area Saturday evening so it’ll be interesting to see how the fishing changes when the trophy’s up for grabs on Sunday.

The field will be reduced to the Top 12 for Sunday’s final round when the winner will be determined by total cumulative weight.

Rojas Changed Up

> Day 2: 5, 17-14 (10, 37-12)

When Rojas pulled up on his first spot today, it slowly became apparent the sight-fishing bite that carried him early on day 1 wasn’t going to click.

“The west wind made it rough on me in the beginning,” he said. “I just couldn’t see well enough.”

He adjusted and moved out to deeper stuff and went to a finesse presentation that eventually led to almost 18 pounds.

“I had to change up everything today – baits and location,” he said. “I had to move out and fish outside.”

He’s drop-shotting a variety of plastics, including one from Big Bite Baits.

He had a limit by noon and culled four times to get his weight. He’s not sure how tomorrow’s going to go. He knows he’ll still have plenty of company, though, as most of the competitors he’s fishing around also made the 50-cut.

Barring a disastrous day 3, he’s a virtual lock to advance to Sunday’s final round, which would give him back-to-back 12-cuts and four for the season.

“I’m going to try to catch another 18 pounds or more and see where that puts me,” he added. “I’m thinking that’s what I’m going to need.”

2nd: Martens Around Winning Fish

> Day 2: 5, 16-15 (10, 36-15)

If there’s a style of fishing that suits Martens’ strengths, it’s what’s been putting fish in the boat this week – spinning tackle, light line and finesse presentations.

“It’s something I grew up doing,” he said. “I feel comfortable fishing a lot of ways, but if I have a strength this is one of them.”

While he relinquished the lead today, he feels he’s around the fish to win. At worst, he’s in position to make a second straight 12-cut and third in his last four events. The problem is he has to share water now.

“Today was very similar to yesterday, but it was a lot a more crowded,” he said. “Yesterday, I had it to myself. Today, it got packed. I left a spot and came back and then couldn’t get back on it.”

He caught about the same amount of keepers today – upwards of 30 – as he did on day 1, but he “didn’t catch nearly as many 3-pounders,” he said.

3rd: JVD Confident

> Day 2: 5, 17-07 (10, 35-02)

VanDam’s morning didn’t get off to the best start. Five minutes after pulling into his primary area, he mashed the prop of his trolling motor on some rocks and had to call in a favor from his uncle (Kevin VanDam), who was fishing nearby.

Jonathon VanDam is riding a wave of confidence this week.

“The area I’m fishing is shallow and the nose came up and when it came off the wave, the motor came down and hit some rocks pretty hard,” he said. “It was a simple fix if I’d have known at the time, but I couldn’t turn the prop with my hand. I called Kevin over and he had a spare one in his boat so I just used that.”

His spare was back at the ramp in his truck. It’s now stowed in his boat in the event it happens again.

As for his fishing, he thought he could catch more than what he did and actually thought he was a bit lighter than what he weighed.

“I expected to catch more,” he said. “I never got any good bites. They were all the same size – 3 3/4 pounds. They actually weighed more than I thought.”

Before the tournament, he told BassFan if there was an event he expected to contend for the win at, this was it. At the halfway mark, he’s certainly in the mix. So far, he’s caught most of his fish on a dropshot and a jerkbait.

“I feel decent about it,” he said. “There are still 2 days to go so anything can still happen. I just feel real comfortable out there right now.”

He’s sharing an area with his uncle and the better bites seem to come when there’s a steady natural current moving through. That’s helped by a north or northwest wind, which is what’s in the forecast tomorrow.

“With the number of fish we saw there in practice, there’s enough to go around,” he added. “I figured today would be a lot better. I only got five keeper bites.”

4th: Palaniuk Aided By 5-10 Brute

> Day 2: 5, 17-00 (10, 35-00)

Palaniuk caught about the same number of fish as day 1, but the difference-maker today was the 5-10 smallie that came early on.

“I hooked into it and it immediately came up and walked about 6 feet across the surface,” he said. “It came back up and then went 6 feet back the other way.”

It was the anchor he needed to keep him in the hunt for his second career win and second of the season.

“It was a lot bumpier than it was yesterday,” he added. “Tomorrow, I’m going to start in the same area and fish it out and try to get a good limit early. Then, I’ll go around and try to see if I can get a big one or two.

“You have to change with them. The fish are still around. You just have to change and adapt with them.”

5th (tie): Crews Had Three Brutes

> Day 2: 5, 17-11 (10, 34-01)

Crews made his fourth straight 50-cut, thanks to three keys bites today on new water.

He said the wind wasn’t much of a factor where he’s fishing, which is out amongst the crowds near Little Sturgeon Bay, Sand Bay and Rileys Bay.

“It was surprising,” he said. "It seemed like blew more down near Green Bay, but not up there where most of us were fishing.”

He caught a couple fish on a yet-to-be-named prototype plastic from Missile Baits and another on a Missile Baits Drop Craw.

“I feel fortunate about what I caught today,” he said. “I had three 4-pounders and that bumped my weight up. I caught them quicker, though, yesterday. Today, it was more of a grind. I’m just catching them fishing. I’m not sight-fishing like some other guys were.”

He moved around several times and weighed three of his fish from new water.

“It’s just a grind,” he added. “There are no places where you can just pull up and catch them one after the other.”

He wouldn’t mind if the wind kicked up a bit tomorrow, but in no way does he want to be confined to the Fox River.

“If we have to stay in the river, it’ll be a complete circus,” he added.

7th: Zaldain In A Comfort Zone

> Day 2: 5, 16-12 (10, 33-09)

This week has been a like a page right out of Northern California Reservoir Fishing 101 for Elite Series rookie Chris Zaldain, who hails from San Jose.

“I’m having an absolute blast,” he said. “Anytime you’re catching 15-plus pounds of smallmouth in a tournament, it’s a great time.

“I think I’ve found something a little different than some guys who are in the same area. They’re all mostly fishing in 6 to 8 feet of water on top of shoals.”

He’s found an area that continues to replenish and has had it mostly to himself.

“I’m surprised no one fished it,” he said. “It’s a 3-foot drop with some rock around it and there are 3-pounders all around it that live there.”

He’s been getting the group of fish fired up with a 5” Top Shelf swimbait before sweeping through with a dropshot rig on 6-pound Seaguar Tatsu fluorocarbon line.

“It’s a great 1-2 punch,” he added. “I’m fired up about tomorrow. With the field cut in half, that will be huge for guys who are dialed in.”

11th: Biffle Survived Mishap

> Day 2: 5, 13-12 (10, 30-13)

Tommy Biffle had a decent limit by mid-morning fishing the Fox River, but it wasn’t until noon that he discovered he’d inadvertently kicked off the switch for his livewell and three of his fish – the three smallest – had expired. The mishap resulted in a 12-ounce penalty and one spot in the standings.

“The cable of the trolling motor lays across the switch from time to time and I must’ve bumped it and it flipped it off,” he said. “That’s the only way I can think it could’ve gotten turned off. It was just pilot error.”

He moved off his best spot to search for bigger bites, in hopes of culling out his two remaining fish. He managed to catch about a dozen keepers today.

His morning was slower, like many of the competitors.

“I knew something was wrong when I wasn’t catching any drum,” he said. “You know something’s up when that happens.

“I’m going to go back out tomorrow and fish where I’ve been fishing. Yesterday, I had it to myself, but my spot got poached today so I was a little upset about that.”

63rd: Short’s Plan Goes Awry

> Day 2: 2, 4-04 (7, 18-08)

Kevin Short was one of several anglers on day 1 who seized upon the conditions and caught his weight sight-fishing.

With the wind blowing today, that strategy was shelved. Instead, he went after resident rogue smallmouths, but didn’t have the same success he did looking on day 1. He came in with just two fish for 4-04 and missed the 49-cut by a little more than 2 1/2 pounds.

“There are different groups of fish up here in the Great Lakes,” he said. “There are the schools of fish and then there are the fish that hang around grass beds or shoals. They spawn there, they stay there, they live there. A lot of times, it seems like those are the big ones. I thought I had four of five places where I could go with a jerkbait and catch three or four of those fish.”

It never materialized for him and he’s headed home early for the sixth time this season.

“I just can’t even explain (my frustration),” he said. “Frustration has been my entire season. It’s just been one of those years you want to say, ‘Someone please stop the ride and let me off.’

“I didn’t have a whole lot going on in this tournament. The water we were given to fish does not have a large population of fish in it. It’s got more drum and carp than I’ve ever seen in my life. I could go down the bank and catch a limit of drum on a jerkbait, no problem. I knew the rogues were a gamble, but with the wind blowing I had nothing else to do.”

Notable

> Day 2 stats – 98 anglers, 49 limits (17 fewer than yesterday), 11 fours, 11 threes, 13 twos, 6 ones, 8 zeroes (6 more than yesterday).

> Shaw Grigsby has weighed nothing but largemouths through 2 days. He’s weighed 28-03, good enough for 25th.

> Dave Smith made his first 50-cut of the year. He’s tied for 27th with Bill Lowen with 27-07.
