When asked whether anything bizarre happened on the water today, Kyle Welcher took a moment to think.

“Nah,” he said before pausing again. “Except that I’m in 1st place. That’s off the wall.”

Based on his weights from the first 2 days of the Table Rock FLW Tour Major, it might not be so off the wall to consider the possibility that a teenager may walk away with his first professional title this weekend.

It’s certainly premature, what with only a 2-plus pound cushion separating him from his closest pursuer and at least 1 more day of fishing to go, but he seems to be aware of all that's around him.

“I know how good these guys catch them every single day,” he said. “I feel like I’m up there on a tightrope and if I slip one way or another, these guys are going to fall all over me.”

The 19-year-old from Opelika, Ala., clobbered the biggest stringer of the tournament so far, a 24-08 sack, to enter the weekend with 44-04. He holds a 2-04 lead over longtime Table Rock guide and pro Stacey King, who weighed 22-13 today to jump from 10th to 2nd with 42-00.

Spencer Shuffield used a 21-08 sack to come from 12th to 3rd with 40-04. Day-1 leader Blake Nick’s weight fell off 4 1/2 pounds today, dropping him to 4th with 37-15. Jason Christie moved up a spot to 5th with 37-07.

Here's a look at the current Top 10, with deficit margin from the leader indicated by red numbers in parentheses:

1. Kyle Welcher: 44-04
2. Stacey King: 42-00 (2-04)
3. Spencer Shuffield: 40-04 (4-00)
4. Blake Nick: 37-15 (6-05)
5. Jason Christie: 37-07 (6-13)
6. Brent Long: 36-12 (7-08)
7. John Devere: 35-14 (8-06)
8. Clent Davis: 35-08 (8-12)
9. Chris Baumgardner: 34-14 (9-06)
10 (tie). Terry Bolton: 33-14 (10-06)
10 (tie). Clint Brownlee: 33-14 (10-06)
10 (tie). Anthony Gagliardi: 33-14 (10-06)

Several pros parlayed 20-plus pound stringers today into another day of fishing as they climbed into the Top 20. Chris Baumgarder launched today in 56th, but stuck 21-02 to soar up to 9th with 34-14. Robert Behrle caught 21-02 today, a 9-plus pound jump over day 1, helping him move from 76th to 14th. Starting in 97th, Troy Morrow caught 21-09, a 10-01 improvement over day 1, and is 18th with 32-01.

Falling down the standings, but remaining in the Top 20, were Terry Bolton and Clint Brownlee, who were 2nd and 3rd, respectively, after day 1. They’re now part of a three-way tie for 10th, along with Anthony Gagliardi, with 33-14. Tom Monsoor has 31-14 in 20th place.

Others, meanwhile, couldn’t back up their day-1 results and missed the weekend, including Todd Hollowell and Dave Wolak, who held down 7th and 8th, respectively, before today. Hollowell caught 12-03 to finish 5 ounces out of the cut in 22nd, while Wolak had 11-08 today and finished 29th.

As advertised, Table Rock has allowed pros to catch fish in a variety of ways. From shallow and deep cranking to flipping shallow cover and throwing the Alabama Rig, it’s been a classic case of pick your poison. The water came down again today and that seems to have blunted the pilgrimage to the bank that pros were seeing earlier this week. The fish appear to be concentrated in staging areas and pockets and several pros reported having a fair amount of success in dirtier water.

The Top 10 pros following day 3 will advance to Sunday, when the winner will be determined by highest cumulative weight.

Welcher Confident Spot Will Replenish

> Day 2: 5, 24-08 (10, 44-04)

Fishing in jeans and a gray t-shirt with the words “OUT OF CONTROL” printed on the front, Welcher improved upon his day-1 catch by almost 5 pounds, and he did it in the same areas, too.

He caught a 6-08 brute today on the same waypoint he stuck a similar fish yesterday and he has no plans to give up on the area either as he feels there’s enough quality there to sustain him.

“I’m going back to the same area and get a feel for how the fish are going to act and go from there,” he added.

He went through seven keepers today, all largemouths, and he added he’s fishing around some boats, but not many. If locals crowd him tomorrow or his spot dries up, he has other water to fish, but it’s not holding similar fish.

“I have places where I feel like I can get a limit, but I have no backup plan to do what I’m doing now,” he said.

His parents and 10-year-old brother, Matt, who’s on spring break from school, are along for the trip, so he’s been able to share his excitement with them.

“It makes it even better,” he said. “My little brother has a ball every time they say my weight on stage. He’s jumping up and down. I almost think he wants me to do well more than I want to do well.

“It’s a great feeling. Since I weighed in, I feel a lot better than I did yesterday. And I hope I feel better tomorrow than I do today.”

Stacey King's bag today was anchored by an 8-pounder.

2nd: King A Little Uneasy

> Day 2: 5, 22-13 (10, 42-00)

King is right at home on Table Rock, but the jig wizard isn’t very comfortable despite holding down 2nd place on the leaderboard.

“The fish are moving a lot right now,” he said. “The fish are going on the beds real strong. I’m fishing for pre-spawn fish that are just staging and I don’t know how many more are going to be out there in the next day or two. There was enough out there today to catch a real good stringer, but they’re moving fast.

"They’re coming up out of the deep water and moving into the spawning flats and pockets so I don’t know how many are going to be out there. I think I can catch some, but I don’t know how many. I don’t feel overly confident that I can catch a big stringer again, but I’m going to do my best.”

He boxed an 8-pounder today, the biggest fish of day 2, and knows it’ll take a few more similar bites to overtake Welcher on the weekend.

“They’re very pivotal. A limit of fish has been fairly easy for me, but to catch 5- to 8-pounders like I have, that’s pretty critical in moving up to the top of the leaderboard.”

He revealed he’s catching his fish on moving baits and doesn’t think his best areas have been pressured all that much. Plus, he’s got alternate spots he backed off today that he knows are holding fish.

“It feels pretty good because I didn’t expect to be catching that many fish at all,” he added. “I thought I could catch some, but I didn’t expect to catch the kind of quality that I’ve caught.”

3rd: A-Rig Part Of Shuffield’s Attack

> Day 2: 5, 21-08 (10, 40-04)

Shuffield worked his way into contention by boxing an early limit with the Alabama Rig the first 2 days and then looking for upgrades on beds. He’s confident the areas he’s working are still holding fish and may, in fact, be improving as time wears on.

“I really do,” he said. “It seems like the bite is getting better and better.”

He’s also pleased he improved upon his performance at the Hartwell FLW Tour Major where he plummeted from 22nd after day 1 to 77th and out of the money.

“It feels good to capitalize on the opportunities I had,” he said. “I was expecting more of a sight-fishing deal (here) and two fish I weighed in yesterday I caught off beds and today I saw a couple of big ones on beds, too, but it seems like there’s more jet skis and people out tubing today, so it got dirtier in a lot of those places. I wasn’t seeing them until it was too late.

“I saw a 5 and couple others that were about 4 that I believe I could’ve caught if I hadn’t initially spooked them off. I know where they’re at so I may go mess with them tomorrow.”

4th: Changes In Store For Nick

> Day 2: 5, 16-11 (10, 37-15)

Nick had a tougher time today boxing a limit and he’s sensing he may need to change his program since his water continues to clean up.

“I’m happy that I scrambled around and caught what I did, but phew, I was lucky to catch that,” he said. “I caught everything that bit. My water is clearing up. I was in the mud and I’m going to have to change presentations and do something different. My fish are still there, I can see them on the graph. I think I might have to throw the Alabama Rig tomorrow.”

He worked the same areas today, but caught his fish off different stretches. He weighed two smallmouths and three largemouths today. He’s mainly been throwing a Strike King KVD 1.5 square bill crankbait.

“It took me all day to get what I got,” he added. “With the water dropping, I think the fish are getting a little more suspended so I started hitting a little steeper banks and moved out a bit.

“The only drawback is I only had 6 hours of practice up where I’m fishing. I didn’t go up there until the last day so I’m still learning a lot about the area. Are the fish there to win? Absolutely. Am I going to make the adjustments in time to do it? I don’t know. That’s yet to be seen. I hope so.”

5th: Christie Kept Looking

> Day 2: 5, 17-15 (10, 37-07)

Christie sight-fished so far up the White River the first 2 days that he felt like he wasn’t even part of the tournament. He said he went through 50 gallons of gas each day.

“Tonight, I’m going to put about 15 gallons in my boat so I can’t go up there,” he said. “All I’m doing is fishing memories, so tomorrow I’m going to hang around and fish all day. I’m wasting 2 1/2 hours a day just driving. I’m going to go put the trolling motor down and fish.”

After day 1, he indicated he wanted to get away from sight-fishing as he feared there weren’t enough quality bites where he was to make it worth it.

“I was pig-headed and did the same exact thing,” he added. “It was the same song, different verse. I caught two big ones and weighed three 15-inch fish. I’m just not seeing that many big fish. I actually caught four of my five just fishing while I was looking. I’m just going down the bank and I’m going pretty slow because I want to catch them the first time I see them. I don’t want to have to come back.

“I don’t know if there are new ones coming up or if we’re just fishing for the same old fish. Hopefully, some new ones come in and it’ll be fun tomorrow.”

His go-to bait thus far has been the Yum Wooly Bug.

6th: Long Catching Quality

> Day 2: 5, 17-08 (10, 36-12)

Brent Long is sitting 7 1/2 pounds off the lead and with the bites he’s been getting, it appears possible he could erase that deficit in short order. Even though he caught about 2 pounds less than his day-1 stringer, he moved up the standings from 9th to 6th.

“I had a good practice. I’m not getting as many bites now as I did in practice,” he said. “Luckily, I’m catching some quality fish when I do get bit.”

A pair of 5-plus pound fish so far has helped his weight on each of the first 2 days. He’s been flipping shallow wood and laydowns with a Charlie’s Worms Flippin' Bug.

“I’m just going to run the same stuff and see if I can catch them again,” he said of his day-3 game plan. “It’s good because the worst I can do is 20th now and I’ll get some good points for the season and get a decent check so I’m excited.”

Chris Baumgardner scrapped his sight-fishing plans and worked stained water to catch a 21-01 stringer.

9th: Baumgardner Backed Off For Big Bites

> Day 2: 5, 21-01 (10, 34-14)

Baumgardner had a couple 20-pound days in practice so his weight today didn’t come as a big surprise to him.

“It was just more about making the right moves today,” he said. “I thought the sight-fish were going to do it with so many fish moving up. I abandoned what I did in practice and the water started dropping so the sight-fishing didn’t work out for me. So I had to go back to what I did in practice and that was fishing dingy water.”

He boxed a 6-02 and 5-08 today to give him one of six 20-pound stringers.

“I had one 4-pounder at noon today, so I shifted gears and went somewhere else,” he said. “I don’t think the fish are that far along really. I’m catching them on steeper banks and I think they’re moving up to spawn, but the water dropping is holding them back. There seems to be more staging fish than spawning fish where I fished today.”

He added that he’s been able to get a couple decent bites in the morning throwing the Alabama Rig on points, but he believes it’ll take another 20-pound effort on day 3 to clinch a spot in the Top 10 for Sunday.

14th: Switch Benefits Behrle

> Day 2: 5, 21-02 (10, 33-03)

Robert Behrle was headed toward a stinker of a day until he made a drastic change in how he was fishing. The change led to a 20-minute flurry that netted him a 7-pounder, a 5 1/2-pounder and a 4-pounder, a trio of bites that clinched him an additional day of competition.

“I struggled all day today and then tried something else and it just went to town,” he said. “They just turned on to what I was doing at the time. I reckon I’ll be doing that all day tomorrow because I don’t want to miss it. It slowed down on me at the end of the day so you just have to keep it going because when it’s on, it’s on. You have to catch them when they’re biting.

“You can’t win it the first day, but you can sure lose it. I fished not to lose at Hartwell instead of to win. Today, I started out that way and I had to make a change and the chips fell the right way.”

He wasn’t willing to reveal specifics about how he’s catching his fish, but he did say he’s mixing up baits and is focused mainly on pockets.

“I’m junk fishing, throwing this and that, and catching them off the bottom and up off the bottom,” he added.

24th (tie): Elder Shuffield Caught Better Quality

> Day 2: 5, 19-10 (10, 31-02)

Ron Shuffield fished the same areas today as he did on day 1. He just fished them differently and it resulted in a better stringer, only it wasn’t enough to earn him a ticket to day 3.

“I went out with a goal in mind to try to make a Top-50 finish,” he said. “I figured I needed 18 pounds to have a chance to do that. I accomplished that mission.”

In comparing notes with his son after day 1, he figured out a change he needed to make to his program.

“My son keyed me in last night about what he did to catch his good sack (on day 1),” he added. “So I took that and fished the same area, which is really frustrating because I knew the area had some quality fish. I hadn’t figured out how to catch the largemouth and today that’s what I did -- I managed to catch the largemouth. That was the key."

His stringer today included four largemouths and a 3-pound smallie.

“I slowed down and fished a little deeper than I had been and changed my lure set-up,” he said. “I was around the right areas. I just wasn’t fishing them the right way.”

Notable

> Day 2 stats – 159 anglers, 105 limits (8 more than yesterday), 16 fours, 13 threes, 10 twos, 10 ones, 5 zeroes.

> Welcher’s co-angler today, Hector Delagarza, caught 16-05 out of the back of the boat, meaning the pair boxed 40-13 on the day.

> King said his co-angler and he each caught 30-pound catfish and he snagged a 15-pound carp today. “If we were having an ugly fish contest, we’d have probably won,” he said.
