When filling out a list of top sight-fishermen on the Bassmaster Elite Series, Alton Jones' name needs to be there. Near the top. In ink.

On a day when the bite toughened across the board, the Texas pro pulled in nearly 28 1/2 pounds to give himself a 44-14 total and a commanding 7-plus pound lead heading into the weekend at the St. Johns River Bassmaster Elite Series.

He opened the day in 17th place, but three 8-pound, egg-filled brutes he pulled off their nests catapulted him past everyone at the halfway point of the season opener.

Jones is no stranger to having the field chasing him on the St. Johns. He led the first 3 days here a year ago, and held a 7 1/2-pound lead following day 2 then as well.

Rick Morris jumped from 4th into a tie for 2nd with David Walker, who moved up from 6th. They each have 37-10 through 2 days. Todd Faircloth's 20-08 sack pushed him into 4th with 36-06 while Brent Chapman holds down 5th with 36-02.

Here's a look at the current Top 12, with deficit margin from the leader indicated by red numbers in parentheses:

1. Alton Jones: 44-14
2. (tie) Rick Morris: 37-10 (7-04)
2. (tie) David Walker: 37-10 (7-04)
4. Todd Faircloth: 36-06 (8-08)
5. Brent Chapman: 36-02 (8-12)
6. Matt Herren: 34-10 (10-04)
7. J. Todd Tucker: 33-09 (11-05)
8. Randy Howell: 32-11 (12-03)
9. Dean Rojas: 32-07 (12-07)
10. Terry Scroggins: 32-04 (12-10)
11. Bill Lowen: 32-02 (12-12)
12. Cliff Crochet: 32-01 (12-13)

Some of those who brought 20-pound sacks to the scales on day 1 struggled to crack double digits today. Most of the beds that still held fish after day 1 were vacant this morning, sending some lookers scrambling to put together a limit.

With water temperatures consistently in the low 70s, even at daybreak, and rising through the day, the refrain from most pros is that the spawn is, for the most part, over. It appears this tournament will turn either on who is able to locate or stumble upon enough remaining bed-fish where the spawn is lagging behind, or who is able to nail down a post-spawn pattern. Don't count out a junk pattern developing either.

The top 50 anglers will fish day 3 and only the Top 12 will advance to Sunday, when the winner will be determined by highest cumulative weight.

Alton Jones worked through nine keepers on day 2 to catapult himself into the lead.

Jones In Familiar, Uncomfortable Position

> Day 2: 5, 28-07 (10, 44-14)

Jones knows he’s been in this position before – ahead by 7-plus pounds on the St. Johns. While he may be the envy of the field, he’s aware of how slim the margin of error is on this system.

“It’s not a comfortable position,” he said. “At this place, with the number of big fish swimming around, there’s no such thing as a comfortable lead. There’s such a fine line between a 20-pound sack and a 6-pound sack. I just need to make sure I’m putting myself in position to get the big bites.

“I love Florida during the spawn. It’s been good to me many times, but it’s burned me a few times as well.”

He went out today with nothing of quality to run to. He had a limit fairly early and then boated three upgrades that accounted for 25 pounds by themselves, one of which he was sure he had spooked since he was nearly on top of her by the time he saw her.

“I had a bad angle with the sun so I couldn’t see that well,” he said. “So when I saw her, I was about a foot away so I backed off the trolling motor and pushed back until I could pitch to her. I was sure she was going to blast out of there, but she didn’t move. I caught her on the first pitch.”

He is fishing one of the lakes, but isn’t camping on one spot. Like many others, he’s convinced the spawning period is coming to an end.

“I’m not seeing the middle-class fish – the 3- and 4-pounders,” he said. “I’m seeing either big ones or little ones. I don’t think there are any new females moving up. These fish are a long way through the process. Some females that weren’t spawning today will pull up tomorrow and get on a bed, so fish that we saw today aren’t likely to be there tomorrow.”

This 7-15 beast was the key bite in David Walker's 17-01 bag today.

2nd (tie): Walker Anxious for Weekend

> Day 2: 5, 17-01 (10, 37-10)

Walker is mixing blind casting with looking at beds this week. The formula has worked out so far and last year’s winner at the Wheeler Elite Series is anxious to see if he can keep it working on the weekend.

“We’re only halfway through this thing,” he said. “There’s still a lot of fishing to do. I’m looking forward to it. I knew going into this that it would be a sight-fishing deal. They make it simple when you come here – you just go sight-fishing.

"Like anything else, though, you have to commit to it. It’s not a matter of driving somewhere and catching five and spending the rest of the day practicing. I’m up for it. I've been waiting for a long time for this season to get started and I’m looking forward to the weekend."

He went through nine keepers today, including a 7-15 beast that was pivotal.

“Yesterday I did it the hard way, catching three 5-pounders,” he added. “I was disappointed I didn’t find a big one, but I was fortunate to find one today. That’s what it takes to win here.”

2nd (tie): Morris’ Power Plan Produces Again

Day 2: 5, 15-14 (10, 37-10)

Morris overcame a slow start to his day and put together a solid limit to vault into a tie with Walker. His power-fishing approach produced seven keepers, including a pair of 5-pounders. He’s using a variety of baits and switching up as the wind changes.

“I didn’t have many bites,” he said. “I had a few other guys who were fishing really tight to the bank yesterday move out on me because they saw me catch a couple yesterday, so we’re beating up a couple of sweet spots. Even though all that happened, I still came out with the best bag there and had a couple 5-pounders that I was fortunate to get in the boat.

“It was another great day. Even though it was only 15 pounds, in my book, it was just awesome. I worked my (butt) off and I finally did get a couple of the key bites I needed.”

Rick Morris is locked in on a power-fishing program that has him tied for 2nd place.

After finishing 91st at the St. Johns last year, he’s ecstatic to have a rock-solid shot at making the Top 12 and potentially registering his first Elite Series victory.

“Yeah, I’d like to win the tournament, but realistically, I’m only as good as what the spot can produce,” he said. “I’ve got it wired. I know how to catch the fish, but I can catch what’s there and I don’t really have the confidence to go anywhere else at this point. I’m figuring I need 10 or 11 pounds and I’ll be fishing Sunday. I’ll go there and milk it for all it’s worth and whatever it gives up is what it gives up.”

4th: Faircloth Committed to Looking

> Day 2: 5, 20-08 (10, 36-06)

Faircloth is sight-fishing, and then pitching in between looking at beds. He’s rolling the dice in hopes that he can continue to pluck quality fish off nests. Today, he had one of just three 20-pound bags. His key bite was an 8-15 whopper that was the big fish of the day.

“I was real fortunate today and caught a great big one. That pretty much made my day,” he said. “I’m committed to doing what I’m doing. I’m fishing a little bit in between, but I’ve caught all of my big ones looking at them. I’m going to have to roll up on something – some new ones or some bigger ones or go to different areas to have a shot at winning.”

He was strong at the St. Johns last year, finishing 4th with a 17-pound average. In 6 days of tournament fishing on the river, he has three 20-pound bags.

He’s catching his bed-fish on a Yamamoto Flappin' Hawg and throwing a Yamamoto Senko when he’s not looking.

“There are a lot of 1 1/2- to 2-pound males left, but that’s not going to win the tournament,” he said. “There are some bigger fish left out there, there’s no doubt about it. It’s just a matter of finding them. It seems like later in the afternoon is better. That’s when I start seeing my bigger fish. There are still some big fish coming. I saw a few pairs the last couple days.

“I’m looking in areas where I’ve seen some, but I’m not working the same exact spots. I’m just milling around on the big flats, hoping I stumble upon a big one. I’m just as apt to catch 6 or 7 pounds as I am 20 tomorrow.”

5th: Chapman’s Long Runs Paying Off

> Day 2, 5, 18-13 (10, 36-02)

Brent Chapman was in the mix early on at the St. Johns a year ago, eclipsing 25 pounds on day 1 before fading to 17th place.

This year, he’s lacking the huge bag, but he’s put himself in position to contend by making long runs to look at some spawners.

“I took a little bit of a risk in practice and gambled some of my fishing time to go look at something off the wall and it’s paying off now,” he said.

The Kansas pro, who already has a spot in the 2013 Bassmaster Classic locked up by virtue of his victory at the Lewisville Central Open last month, knows he wouldn’t be making such a risky run if points were his main motivation.

He’s not surprised the area he’s fishing has produced for 2 straight days.

“When you look at Florida and how it sets up and fishes, it’s really panned out just like I’d hoped,” he added. “It’s kind of amazing. Bed-fishing in Georgia is easy because the water’s so clear you can really see them. Where I’m at it’s real hard to see them, but if I can get slick and no wind, I think I can catch a big bag.

"On Monday, when I found these fish, it was real windy and I caught them on a moving bait, so if it gets windy, I think I can get them.”

He was sharing the general area with another pro who didn’t make the cut, so he should have it to himself for at least 1 more day.

“The key bites I found were on beds and were actually pretty easy to catch,” he said. “I do have a fish marked for tomorrow that I hope to be able to catch fairly quickly.”

50th: Two Just Enough for Ledoux

> Day 2: 2, 4-11 (7, 23-04)

Rookie Kevin Ledoux had one goal coming into the season-opening Florida swing: Make one cut.

He sure made it interesting, weighing just two fish today for 4-11, but it was enough to push him inside the cut and earn himself a check in his first Elite Series event

“I wanted to come out of Florida with one check,” he said. “I got that taken care of this week and next week I just can go relax and have fun. Any time you can get out there and have fun, it seems like things come to you a little easier.

“I had the bites to have a really big sack today,” he said, noting a 6-pounder he lost early this morning was the first fish all week he didn't get into the boat.

He’s frogging in thick lily pads and counted 11 blowups on his bait today.

“That’s the deal with frog-fishing,” he added. “You see them coming, you see them get it and you have to get them out after that. I’m using 65-pound braid and I have my drag as tight as it’ll go, but that big one still pulled some drag on me. I’m going to get the pliers on it tonight and get it tight so they don’t do that to me again.

“Tomorrow, the pressure’s off. I’m just going to go have fun and if I can get five bites and get them out, the potential is there for a really heavy sack.”

59th: Big Bites Eluded Shryock

> Day 2: 4, 6-06 (9, 21-09)

Fletcher Shryock woke up Friday morning excited about the possibility of making the weekend in his first Elite Series tournament. The rookie from Ohio tumbled from 26th to 59th and missed a chance to fish the weekend and cash a check by less than 2 pounds.

“I’m pretty depressed right now,” he said. “I was sight-fishing and I’m not a sight-fisherman. This is my first time doing it.”

Coming off a solid day 1 when he bagged 15-03, he didn’t have a particular set of beds to go to today, but just before noon he came upon an area holding several 5- to 7-pounders. Needless to say, his best efforts through the rest of the day to invite a bite were ignored.

Late in the day, he pulled up on a 2 1/2-pounder that was nesting. He flipped a tube in her direction and looked away for a second. When he looked at the fish again, he noticed his tube bait coming out of the fish’s mouth. He never felt the bite.

“I poled around all morning for one big one,” he added. “I was really hoping to make the Top 12, not fall back out of making a check.”

He caught his fish on a variety of plastics, including the Berkley HAVOC Grass Pig.
