Sometimes the best practice is a tournament.

It certainly was for North Carolina pro Dave Wolak. The former Pennsylvanian recently returned north for a 2-week stay at Lake Champlain along the New York-Vermont border. He finished 4th at the Champlain Northern AFS, then won the Champlain Bassmaster Northern Open last weekend.

He was able to nail down a solid pattern at the AFS. He didn't touch it during his Open practice, but revisited it once the tournament began. Using that pattern, plus a backup pattern when the wrong wind blew, allowed him to weigh a 54-01 total at the Open and pocket more than $50,000 for the win.

And it was a special one.

"It meant a lot to me just because you usually kind of stumble into your first win, like I did my sophomore season at the (Bassmaster) Major," Wolak said. "When I won that one, I found an odd pattern with a lot of fish cruising the bank and I figured out a way to catch them. And that was a lot smaller body of water. But to win up here means so much to me. Champlain is the ultimate test of all your equipment. You have to think through each day with all the variables in play here – whether you should fish largemouth or smallmouth, whether you should run far or stick close.

"That's why I love coming here and why the win meant so much to me."

Here's an in-depth look at how he won the Open.

Practice

During his AFS practice, Wolak found a unique grassbed in Missisquoi Bay that seemed largely ignored. It had healthy grass, whereas much of the rest of the lake had slime-laden grass from an intense algae bloom. And it held better-quality largemouths than he was able to find elsewhere.

The smallmouth bite was difficult to dial in – he thinks because of all the slime – so he decided to focus on largemouths for the AFS. That grassbed accounted for nearly all his fish in that 4th-place finish.

"The fish there were extremely fat and healthy," he noted. "They were so fat they looked ready to explode. A 16-incher weighed 3 pounds. There was a lot of perch and bait mixed in with the grass, and it was a mix of vegetation – hydrilla, good milfoil and some cabbage. There were giant caverns in the grass and you could pitch right in there."

When it came time to practice for the Open, he stayed off that grassbed and explored some different options. He was able to find a backup pattern – flipping and pitching to grass mats that had blown against shore.

Competition

> Day 1: 5, 18-09 (7th)
> Day 2: 5, 19-06 (2nd)
> Day 3: 5, 16-02
> Total = 15, 54-01

Wolak did as planned the morning of day 1: He started on the hot grassbed that carried him through the AFS. It wasn't on though. There was nothing happening.

"I flipped and pitched there for 2 hours and caught one 3 1/2 and one small one," he said. "They just didn't bite. There was a north wind, and I always remember at this lake that a north wind has a big effect on the grass in Ti(conderoga). The grass fish don't seem to bite in a north wind."

He cobbled together 10 to 12 pounds by 11:00 and bailed. "I went in to try some shallow cover – shallow grass mats along reefs that offered the closest canopy to the bottom and were blowing in real shallow. Within a half-hour I caught a 4. I knew a lot of areas like that, so I ran that pattern the rest of the day and caught 18 1/2."

He did lose a 6-pounder at the boat when his rod got tangled in the net, but on the way back in, he was relieved to know his backup plan worked.

On day 2 the wind switched to the south. He started on a smallmouth spot and caught four 3-pounders, which he said eased his mind quite a bit.

"Then I had a feeling that grassbed might turn on again. I went in there and it was like a totally different area. On my first pass I caught a 4 and a 3 3/4. To make a long story short, without leaving, I caught 19 1/2. I stayed and milked it to move into the lead, because at Champlain they may bite one day, but not the next."

He was now tournament leader by a few ounces, and on the final morning stopped on his smallmouth spot again but they didn't bite. Then he went to his hot grassbed and it was a "mashfest."

"My co-angler and I were setting the hook anytime we pitched on something," he said. "Fish were just flying over the side. He'd grab the net for me. I'd grab the net for him. It was unbelievable. It was kind of a lowlight-condition day and there were huge caverns in the grass and when you'd pitch in a hole they'd shoot out and hammer it.

"They ended up being a lot of 3-pounders. I weighed 16-02 but culled 20 times to get there. I think I milked a lot of the 4-pounders out of there the day before."

Winning Pattern Notes

Wolak believes that there was a hard bottom within the grassbed, which was one reason it was so good. He could hear his Power-Poles hit rock as he deployed them.

The grass bed was in 4 to 8 feet of water, and he caught most of his fish in about 6 feet.

Winning Gear Notes

> Flipping gear: 7'6" medium-heavy Pinnacle Perfecta DHC Light Pitching & Flipping rod, Pinnacle Scion Select casting reel, 56-pound Sunline braid, 1/2-ounce Fin-tech Title Shot jig (green-pumpkin/barbwire), 3 3/4" Yum Craw Papi (green-pumpkin).

The Bottom Line

  • Main factor in his success – "That my equipment held up over the 2-week period and that it's the best equipment I know of. From the Ranger and Yamaha to my rods and reels – you can't find a truer test of equipment than what I put myself through the last 2 weeks. It was some really rough stuff. And having a 52-inch-shaft Minn Kota is another big deal. So many guys run 42-inch shafts, but I run all year with 52. For the 20% of the fishing where I really do need it, it's worth getting used to."

  • Performance edge – "The new Pinnacle Perfect DHC. It's a really light rod with a lot of backbone. Over the course of pitching for 2 weeks and fishing two tournaments, it made an overall difference in my endurance. But the boat and motors holding up was really big too. It's never just one thing."
