Steve Clapper has put a schooling on some of the best anglers in the world over the first 2 days of the Detroit River FLW Tour, but it's not about to go to his head.

"I just have a lot of experience here," said the 59-year-old retired construction superintendent from Lima, Ohio, who's fishing his first Tour event. "I don't consider myself in their class."

The five-time Detroit River BFL winner's 20-12 bag today gave him a 2-day total of 42-14, and he led the cut by 1-11. Indiana's Shad Schenck, who's caught fire in the last two events after averaging a 106th-place finish through the first four, weighed a tournament-best 22-12 today and was 2nd with 41-03.

Indiana's Thomas Moleski, another first-time Tour entrant, caught 19-07 today and dropped one spot to 3rd with 40-11. Connecticut's Terry Baksay bagged 20-02 today, but fell one place to 4th with a 39-07 total.

Arizona's Cliff Pirch moved up six spots with a 19-11 stringer, and he rounds out the Top 5 with 38-05.

Here's the rest of the Top 10 who'll compete tomorrow:

6. (tie) Trevor Jancasz: 38-00
6. (tie) Christopher King: 38-00
8. Josh Myers: 36-13
9. (tie) Kevin Long: 36-12
9. (tie) Clark Wendlandt: 36-12

Oregon's Jay Yelas, who surrendered his lead in the Angler of the Year (AOY) race to Shinichi Fukae on day 1, nailed down his second FLW Tour points title with an 18-04 bag. It bumped him up 21 places to 25th – one spot higher than where he needed to finish to win the title regardless of where anyone else ended up.

Fukae, who was 10th with 18-14 after day 1, slipped to 15-13 today and finished 19th.

"What a thrill," Yelas said. "I've had two 2nd-places this year (at Norman and Beaver), so I've had my share of times when I almost won, but didn't. It would have been a bummer if I hadn't won this because I've had what I consider an excellent year, but I wouldn't have had anything to show for it."

Weights were zeroed after today's weigh-in, and whoever's on top of the leaderboard tomorrow will have earned it. The weather forecast calls for scattered thunderstorms and wind out of the southwest in excess of 20 mph. That'll mean 6-foot rollers on Lake Erie.

Locals like Clapper and Moleski, who've dealt with those conditions on many occasions, would seem to have a big advantage. But it won't be much fun for them, either, and remember, they won't be in their own boats that are specially equipped for big water. FLW Outdoors supplies sponsor-wrapped boats for weekend competition.

"In that kind of wind, just navigating up the river and bucking the current is going to be a chore in itself," Clapper said.

The winner will be determined by highest combined weight over the final 2 days.

Clapper Keeps it Up

Clapper had a day that was similar to day 1, but today was easier due to the lighter breeze and smaller waves. Today's wind speed never reached double-digits.

"Today was a cakewalk and we just ripped down there (to his spot on Erie)," he said. "I had 18 pounds by 9:00, and then I pulled off and practiced some more, and I was even able to cull up a couple of times."

He caught about 20 keepers on the day, including two that weighed more than 5 pounds. He's not sure whether he can keep it up, though – he'll be fishing out of a shorter boat tomorrow (20 feet as opposed to his own 22-footer) with a shorter-shafted trolling motor.

"The key for me is holding on specific little rockpiles and such," he said. "The thought of anchoring is crossing my mind. That's not something I do, but (the chance to win) $200,000 will make you do a lot of things."

Would he consider fishing shallower Lake St. Clair, or perhaps the river itself, to try to minimize the weather's impact?

"That's not something I want to do. I have a little bit of experience on St. Clair, but my chances of going there and winning are minimal. I need to go back to the big lake to win.

"If I feel I have to go up there (to St. Clair) to survive, I might be able to catch 15 or 16 pounds."

Shad Schenck has made the Top 10 in each of the last two events.

2nd: Schenck a Fast Learner

Schenck had never competed at Erie prior to this event, but he's proven to be a quick study.

"You have to learn quick at this place," he said. "If you don't, you'll have a real bad day, and you might even get hurt."

He caught 18 keepers today and his bag was headed by a 5-05.

"I caught them pretty early and came in to get ready for tomorrow. I fished the same area I did yesterday, and being able to do that is one of the keys for me when I'm on a new body of water."

He didn't crack the Top 50 in the season's first four events, but has now achieved back-to-back Top 10s (he was 7th at the Potomac River) and will likely qualify for the Forrest Wood Cup.

"It's just fishing – when you get a roll, it's a lot easier to do well. I put a little pressure on myself these last couple of events, knowing I needed to make the Top 10 in both to get into the championship. I've got a little more fire in my belly and I'm just going for it."

He said he'll go to Erie tomorrow no matter what the weather does.

"I'm not changing at all – if it takes 3 hours to get where I need to go, then it takes 3 hours. I'll fish for an hour or 2 and come back.

"It'll be one of those days that's a physical and mental challenge, and I'm looking forward to it. You just have to be as efficient as you can, even if you have to crawl around on the deck with pads on your knees and elbows."

3rd: Moleski has Good Morning

Moleski caught only seven keepers, but the biggest five were more than enough to secure his spot for the weekend.

"I did pretty much the same thing (as on day 1), but because it was calmer, I was able to bounce around a little bit more," he said. "I was done by 11:00 – I knew I had close to 20 (pounds)."

If the wind blows as hard as expected tomorrow, he'll probably fish closer to the launch.

"It could be tough to make a long run with 6- and 7-foot waves, but I have a backup plan and I hope it will produce. Even in heavy wind, I think I can muster up at least a decent limit – something in the mid-teens, anyway.

"So much is going to be predicated on the weather. You have to go by how it's blowing out from where we launch because you for sure have to come back in that."

5th: Pirch Made Right Move

Pirch's 19-11 bag today was a little more than a pound heavier than yesterday's, and it took him a little longer to get it.

"The fish moved a little and I had to go to some new places, but I ended up homing in on them," he said. At about 11 or 12 (o'clock), I really started working them.

"I quit catching them when I thought I probably had enough (to make the cut). I didn't hammer them."

He's caught all of his fish so far on a dropshot rod.

"I'm having a lot of fun fighting them on that light line, and they're putting on some acrobatics out there."

He thinks he has plenty of fish left – if he can get to them.

"The weather could change things because it tightens up how many places you can go. But if you can get around and locate a school, you can really jack them up.

"I'll shoot for the same kind of bag I've caught the last 2 days, but I won't stop catching them. Normally at this point you're worried about what you have left. But when you run into a school here, there's probably a lot more fish than you think."

Standout co-angler Trevor Jancasz made the Top 10 in his first Tour event fishing from the front of the boat.

6th: Good Start for Jancasz

Michigan's Trevor Jancasz was a Top-10 finisher in the co-angler points the past 2 years and the champion in that division in 2005. This is his first Tour event as a pro.

It's been quite a debut so far, and it could get even better.

"This is my kind of fishing," he said. "I live 2 1/2 hours away, and I've spent a lot of time out here with (Mark) Zona, Chip (Harrison) and (Kevin) Vida. I've fished this way my whole life.

"I've got some shallow stuff and some deep stuff and I'm catching them anywhere from 4 to 28 feet. I haven't gone real deep yet, but I will if the weather lets me."

He had a limit by 9:30 and culled several times after that. The biggest fish in his 19-07 bag was just a little over 4 pounds.

"It was slow at the start and I said I was giving myself another 40 minutes, and then I was leaving. Then they just started biting. I got on a deal and just started whaling on them."

He thinks he stands a good chance of winning.

"Don't count me out. There's still lots of fish there."

Notable

> Day 2 stats – 200 anglers, 155 limits (22 more than yesterday), 13 fours, 14 threes, 9 twos, 1 one, 8 zeroes (six fewer than yesterday).

> Jancasz committed all of his practice to Erie, but said he might fish the river or St. Clair tomorrow if he deems Erie to be too dangerous. "I can probably go to one of those places and figure something out," he said.

> Baksay (4th) managed a 20-pound bag from St. Clair with the help of two late 4-pounders. "My son was fishing a Mizmo tube in practice and just catching the heck out of them," he said. "So when it got calm and sunny late in the day, I tied one on and caught those fish back-to-back. I came here with only eight of them and I let (my son) use one, and he fished it until there was one little tail hanging off it."

> Scott Dobson caught a hefty 20-10 today, but he was first out of the cut – 4 ounces behind Wendlandt.

> Jess Caraballo of Connecticut is 73rd on the co-angler side, but wrapped up the AOY in that division today.
