There was some standings flip-flop at today's Clarks Hill Bassmaster Elite Series near Augusta, Ga. But closer inspection shows the flip-flop wasn't too significant.

Instead, things have settled into a daily average battle – 19 pounds a day leads, and the Top 5 are separated by only 2 1/2 pounds.

Sophomore Florida pro Chris Lane ended day 1 in 4th, when he was one the four who weighed 20 pounds or better. Among those four, he posted the best weight today (17-09), which nudged him into the lead.

Two ounces behind him is Mike McClelland, who caught 17-04 today and moved up a spot to 2nd.

Rookie Casey Ashley, who's considered a local, was the day 1 leader. He caught 8 pounds less today (14-08) and slipped to 3rd.

Rookie sensation Derek Remitz, who won the season opener at Amistad and nearly won the next event at the California Delta, made a huge move today. His 20-00 was the day's second-best sack, and that moved him up all the way from 13th to 4th.

Pete Ponds caught 14-06 today (vs. 21-01 yesterday) and slipped from 2nd to 5th.

As noted, the weights are exceptionally tight near the top. The field is now cut to the Top 50, who'll fish tomorrow, then only the Top 12 will fish the final day. Here's a look at the current Top 12. Total weight is followed by distance from leader in red.

1. Chris Lane: 37-15
2. Mike McClelland: 37-13 (0-02)
3. Casey Ashley: 36-14 (1-01)
4. Derek Remitz: 35-09 (2-06)
5. Pete Ponds: 35-07 (2-08)
6. Bryan Hudgins: 34-11 (3-04)
7. Jason Quinn: 33-12 (4-03)
8. Jon Bondy: 33-02 (4-13)
9. Kevin Short: 31-13 (6-02)
10. Rick Morris: 31-00 (6-15)
11. Jeff Reynolds: 30-11 (7-04)
12. Randy Howell: 30-02 (7-13)

Remitz, Short and Morris moved into the Top 12. They replaced Edwin Evers (now 14th), John Crews (13th), and Aaron Martens (15th).

Several factors are currently at play. One is the schooling bite. It's picking up daily, but is generally an early deal. A number of the Top 12 had difficultly catching much of anything after lunchtime.

That makes execution critical, especially tomorrow morning. At least one large local tournament launches tomorrow, so the morning bite will get pounded, with the potential for only scraps on Sunday. In fact, many believe that if one of the Top 5 busts a 20-plus sack tomorrow morning, it could be all over.

Another complication is the current. Tomorrow's Saturday – reportedly a low-to-no generation day at Clarks. So anglers who've been counting on current to position their fish or activate the bait likely won't get it tomorrow.

Another factor, and a huge one, is the big bite. A sack of 3-pounders is strong, but a 5-pound bite is critical, because it pushes the bag up into the 17- to 18-pound range. Two of them gets you to 20, which is the high-water mark right now.

So far, the big bite has been more of a numbers game – catch as many as you can and your odds of quality are better. Yes, bigger fish have been coming from specific areas, so it's not purely random, but it's no guarantee by any means.

Weather, so far, hasn't been much of a factor. It's been sunny, with light to moderate winds, with more of the same expected for tomorrow and Sunday.

Lane Looks Toward Tomorrow

Lane seems to pretty much know the score. He thinks he needs 20 pounds tomorrow. And if he gets it, he thinks he'll win – especially if the others come in around 15.

He's catching schooling fish – yesterday he noted he was doing something to initiate the schooling activity – and his morning started the right way today.

"On my first cast I caught a 2 1/2 on my front hook, and a 2 1/2 on the back hook," he said. "I had my limit by 7:45. I did upgrade – I wanted to catch 15 there – and I left around 10:00.

"The rest of the day went well. I caught some other fish, but nothing that helped me. But I have some more fish now, in case some pressure from local tournaments comes around tomorrow. I just have to go out and do the best I can."

About leading with 2 days left to fish, he said: "I feel good, but I don't know that I like being in 1st – the only way you can go is backwards. I feel good about it though. I'm happy to have gained a little ground on some of the leaders, and tomorrow's the time to catch them again.

"It's at the point now where I really need to put my head down and tighten up and catch what I can to try to win this tournament."

He thinks the next 2 days will be a mental battle more than anything else, because he feels he's got the fish to win.

Mike McClelland's sharing water, and he didn't have an afternoon bite – those two things concern him.

"My partner today caught 15 pounds," he noted. "It's just a matter of when do you leave, and when do you not leave? Do you stay and try to keep people from coming in, or do you leave and let them catch them? I'm not real sure.

"I think tomorrow could be the deciding factor in the tournament. Whoever separates themselves from the field tomorrow will probably win this tournament."

2nd: McClelland's Bite Quit

The good news for McClelland is that he's 2 ounces off the lead. The bad news is he's sharing water. Another concern is that his fish quit biting early today, and the bulk of his afternoon was largely a waste.

"I feel good about my position – I really thought I got myself farther behind," he said. "And honestly, I thought I only had 15 pounds, but one big one weighed more than I thought she did.

"And I'm a little concerned about the way the day went. I really felt I'd get a better afternoon bite, but I was basically done at 2:00."

He popped his best fish at about 11:30, which was right on schedule based on yesterday and his practice, but not much afterward. So he tried to run and find new water, but didn't find anything he thought would be a benefit.

Weather's also crucial to his bite. Winds switched from the south to the north today, and revved up to about 10 mph. He said he needs a south, or even west, wind to position his fish. But tomorrow's forecast calls for more from the north.

About his area, and the people in it, he said: "Kevin VanDam (55th), Russ Lane (25th), Kevin Wirth (43rd) – we're all fishing the same stuff. Without the bluebacks moving up on the flats though, the fish really don't have any reason to get up there. I just don't know if any new fish will move in.

"It's one of those deals where maybe (the others in the area) will ease up on me since I'm in the position I'm in. Everybody's been pretty respectful as far as not pulling up, but when one guy gets done, someone slips in behind him.

"I feel pretty confident I can catch five," he added. "I have some backup plans where I can go catch 6 to 10 pounds pretty easy in the creeks, but it's definitely not what you want to do when you're in the position to possibly win one."

> He's still throwing a Jewel jig, but he caught a few crank fish today that he eventually culled out.

Casey Ashley's okay with his 14 1/2 pounds today – he's only a pound off the lead.

3rd: Ashley Okay With Day

Ashley caught 8 pounds less than he did yesterday, but he's still averaging 18 1/2 pounds, which he thinks should be enough to win the tournament.

He did the same thing today as yesterday – he ran to a spot, made a few casts, then ran to another spot. What makes his weight look strong right now, comparatively speaking, is that it's not dependent on the current, according to him.

And since "they don't pull water on Saturdays" at Clarks, he thinks weights will continue to decease tomorrow, which should throw the advantage to him. Add to that the fact that a 60-boat local event launches tomorrow morning, and more than a few anglers could lighten up significantly.

"I actually caught a lot more fish today than yesterday, but the quality wasn't there," he said. "I feel pretty good about tomorrow. I feel I can have at least (14 1/2 pounds) again. There's a big local tournament here tomorrow, with about 60 boats, and that's going to play into a lot of the guys."

On whether he can win, he said: "I feel pretty confident. All it's going to be is who gets the right couple of bites. It's going to take a big bite each day (to win)."

5th: Ponds Laid Off a Little

Ponds noted yesterday that he had several spots, but only one was producing size. He went easy there today, and saved some for tomorrow, which could be one reason he was a little lighter today (14-06 vs. 21-01 yesterday).

He trails Lane by exactly 2 1/2 pounds.

About his position, Ponds said: "I feel pretty good about it. I think I've got a pretty good shot. We'll have to see what happens.

"I don't know whether I can maintain this or not, but I've got a lot of fish," he added. "It depends on how the fish bite. I had a lot of fish come up and hit my bait and not get it. That could be the result of the cold front that came through.

"Also, I left my fish early today. Tomorrow, I plan on hitting them really hard. I think if I can come in with 17 pounds, I'll make the Top 12."

Of note is that he got away from the bait he used on day 1, and he thinks he'll have to move to a larger bait tomorrow to catch quality.

The bait he switched to today was a Rattleback, a homemade lure he said his father invented about 20 years ago. "It's a suspending-type lipless crank. It's not on the market, so I'm not real concerned that anybody else will have a bait like that. But it seems to catch fish when other (things) won't."

About his goal tomorrow, he said: "My whole goal is to win the tournament. I think it's still reachable."

8th: Bondy Happy

Canadian Jon Bondy struggled through the first three events, and he entered the tournament 2nd to last in the Elite Series points. But he put together two solid bags here – 15-11 and 17-07 – and things are looking up.

"I feel excellent," he said. "I caught them on a lure I didn't even throw yesterday. It's a good old-fashioned smallmouth technique from Lake St. Clair that nobody knows about. It's a standard bait, but I'm using it a certain way. I think I can catch them good tomorrow. They had it so far down their throats today in was unbelievable."

So far he's caught four 5-pounders, which is strong, and that has him thinking he can repeat tomorrow.

"I'm around big fish," he noted. "If I have to change again tomorrow, I have to. The first day I caught 25 keepers, and today about 15. But I heard a lot of the guys saying they're catching a lot less than that.

"I finished 19th here last year," he added. "I just kind of went in from where I caught them last year, and they were there."
