Gutierrez Stretches His Advantage To 11 Pounds

A lot of Bassmaster Elite Series anglers have anointed California's Clear Lake the new bass-fishing capital of the world. If that's the case, then Greg Gutierrez has served two terms as king, president, prime minister, or whatever title is bestowed upon the holder of the highest office in the realm.

The diminutive firefighter from neighboring Red Bluff caught another giant bag – a pound more than on day 1 – to lead for the second straight day. If he stays on his current pace, he'll obliterate the BASS 4-day weight record by nearly 18 pounds.

His 33-13 stringer gave him a 66-10 total for 2 days and an advantage of nearly 11 pounds over a field that's absolutely clobbering big fish. There have been four 30-pound-plus bags weighed thus far, and he's responsible for two of them.

"I'm pretty well stoked," he said. "No matter what happens from here on out, I've had a wonderful 2 days.

"I'm so excited that I was awake at 2:30 this morning, just wide-eyed. I'll sleep better tonight now that I've made the cut."

Texan Kelly Jordon brought in 32-08 today, and he's 2nd with 55-11. The renowned sight-stick hasn't weighed a bed-fish yet, but that'll likely change tomorrow.

California's Skeet Reese is catching the type of weights he thought he'd need to contend, but he didn't know that Gutierrez would whack them like this. He climbed nine spots to 3rd today with a 27-09 sack for a 54-05 total.

Florida's Peter Thliveros caught another good stringer (25-07), but dropped one place to 4th with a 54-02 total. Californian Ish Monroe's 20-07 bag was 12 pounds lighter than on day 1, and he dropped from 2nd to 5th with a 53-00 total.

If not for Gutierrez, this would be a closely contested slugfest, with the entire Top 12 separated by just one good Clear Lake bite. But the leader has caught the two biggest sacks of the event – no easy feat on this type of hawg factory against this caliber of competition – and everybody else has to hope that he slows up just a bit.

In addition to Jordon, new arrivals to the Top 12 were Bassmaster Classic champion Boyd Duckett of Alabama (21st to 8th with 27-04 today), Californians Jared Lintner (39th to 9th, 29-07) and Fred Roumbanis (19th to 10th, 25-14) and Alabama's Steve Kennedy (51st to 12th, 29-13).

Those who fell out of that group were North Carolina's Britt Myers (5th to 24th, 19-05), Virginia's Kurt Dove (7th to 35th, 17-06), Kentucky's Kevin Wirth (9th to 23rd, 20-14), Alabama's Russ Lane (11th to 34th, 18-14) and Arkansas' Mike McClelland (12th to 39th, 17-09).

Big fish continued to move toward the banks. Oklahoma's Jeff Reynolds caught a 12-11 off a bed, and anybody who wants to hang with Gutierrez had better find themselves one of those tomorrow – whether they see it before they catch it or not.

Tomorrow's forecast is for similar weather to what the field saw today – a partly cloudy sky with a high temperature of 72 degrees and a northwest wind to 10 mph. It could be important for the lookers to convert on day 3, because mostly cloudy conditions are predicted for Sunday.

The field will be cut to 12 after tomorrow's weigh-in, and the winner will be determined by highest 4-day weight.

Gutierrez Rolls Three 8s

Gutierrez didn't catch a 10-pounder like he did on day 1, but three 8s backed up by a couple of 5s more than made up for that.

"My first fish was an 8-pounder, and it came within three or four casts," he said. "I had a 20-pound limit in 15 or 20 minutes."

He's on staging fish and figures he can keep catching them even if they move up – he'll simply follow them toward the bank.

"I'd be okay with that. I'm ready to go to shore and go toe to toe with the big ones. I've caught 35-pound bags off of beds here before, so that doesn't faze me.

"I might run some areas tomorrow that I haven't checked yet. I've got one little spot where there's 10 fish for close to 100 pounds (combined). Now that more than half the field is gone, life is good."

He got a double-digit bite today, but it straightened his hook and got away.

"I was fishing a dropshot with a light wire hook. If you don't get those to penetrate their jaw, they'll just curl over on it and straighten it out. About three tail sweeps, and she was gone."

At this point, he's not focused on breaking Preston Clark's 4-day record of 115-15, set last year at Santee Cooper. He's not even giving much thought to winning.

"I don't want to think like that when what I need to do is keep going out there and whacking fish. Sometimes I'll swing so hard that I come in with a big zero. I don't want to hang my cap out there so far that I'm prone to screwing everything up.

"I'll fish to win, but I also want to play it smart. I want to manage my time and manage my resources, and the fish are the resources."

2nd: Jordon Ready to Look

The only reason Jordon hasn't weighed a bed-fish yet is he hasn't found any that were worthy of that distinction. He's been able to catch better fish with other tactics.

"I've just fished and covered water, and I've got a little deal going," he said. "I've seen lots of bedders, but none that would've helped me any. Guys are talking about seeing all of these 10-pounders, but I haven't run into any yet.

"But I did see that one Jeff Reynolds caught today, and I'll definitely be looking for a couple of those."

His biggest fish today was a 7 3/4-pounder and his smallest was a 5-03. He hasn't caught an 8-pounder yet – not even in practice.

"I thought everybody was going to catch 30 pounds today – I got that much just piddling around and without getting any big bites. You'd think I'd have to get one eventually. I know I'm ready for it."

He said this place is at least on a par with his beloved Lake Fork.

"I think these fish might be a little fatter on the average. They're all just blimps."

5th: Monroe Crossed Up

Monroe's 32-09 bag on day 1 was comprised of staging fish. He said the big ones in his areas were transitioning to the beds today, and were more interested in spawning than eating, and he didn't make the right adjustments.

He'll shift to a full-on sight-fishing mode tomorrow.

"Somebody's going to weigh a 35-pound bag in the next 2 days," he said. "If things go right, it might be me or Skeet or one of the other guys who's sight-fishing."

He caught somewhere in the neighborhood of 40 keepers today, but the biggest was a 5-pounder he pulled off a bed.

"My goal for tomorrow is 35, but I want to catch at least 25 to make the (Top 12) cut. That would mean the guys behind me would have to catch at least 28.

"I'll start with a swimbait, and then I'm going looking, and I'm not stopping unless (the fish) is at least 5 pounds. I can catch 5-pounders just fishing from bed to bed."

6th: Sedgwick Switches Gears

South Carolina's Ray Sedgwick caught 27 pounds on a lipless crankbait on day 1. That bite went away today – probably because the water had cleared significantly – so he took a versatile approach and brought in 25-06.

"I caught some on a swimbait, some on a jerkbait and some on a dropshot, and that was the sum of the story," he said. "I had to change to some clear-water techniques."

He caught a limit that was close to 20 pounds in the first half-hour. He got numerous bites the rest of the day, but couldn't boost it much.

"I caught a lot of 3- and 4-pounders, and I was gaining just ounces here and ounces there. This place is just chock-full of fish, and it doesn't seem to matter whether you use light line or not. My partner was using 14-pound on a dropshot, and he was catching them behind me."

He thinks he's on enough fish to hold his position within the Top 12.

"The area replenishes every day, and there's a couple of parts where they're really moving up. It should be a good next couple of days. A lot of bucks are up now, and the females will be shortly behind."

6th: VanDam Caught a Bunch

With all that he's accomplished in this sport and all of the places he's fished, Kevin VanDam isn't easily impressed. Clear Lake has managed that this week, though.

"This might be the best tournament I've ever been in," he said. "I've never seen weights like this. Timing has something to do with it, but this is unbelievable.

"These are the healthiest fish I've ever caught – more so than Mexico, even."

When asked how many keepers he caught today, he said, "A ton." Was it more than 50? "Oh, easy."

He thinks he'll need a 30-pound bag tomorrow to make the Top 12.

"Things are changing more and more each day, but I think I'm in good shape. I'm looking forward to it."

Some sight-fishing might be a big part of the day-3 gameplan.

"I'm looking around. I'm not afraid to do it."

108th: Starks Empties his Well

West Virginia's Jeremy Starks was tied for last place with 13-00 when the day began, and he caught a similar limit today. He was so frustrated that he dropped the fish back in the lake and skipped the weigh-in festivities.

"I was too upset to weigh them in, and it wouldn't have mattered (standings-wise)," he said. "I was frustrated and I didn't want to stand in the weigh-in line for an hour and a half, so I put my stuff on the trailer and headed east."

The objects of his frustration were two 10-pounders that he could see, but couldn't catch.

"I spent 3 or 4 hours on them, and they just wouldn't lock. I knew if I could catch those two it would make a huge difference, so I stayed with them all day.

"It's amazing – some tournaments you're just so dialed in, and then other ones you can't do anything right. Sometimes you just have to say to hell with it and blow off some steam.

"It seems like when the first thing goes bad, it just steamrolls. But somebody's got to finish last."

> Day 2 stats – 108 anglers, 106 limits, 1 four, 1 zero.

> The entire field would have weighed a limit for the second straight day, but Starks opted not to cross the stage and Myers had a 5-pounder jump out of his livewell when he failed to secure the lid for the return trip to the launch.

> Gutierrez spent much of the day trying to do long-line releases on 4-pounders. "I was shaking the rod, saying 'Get off, get off, get off.' I didn't want to have to grab them because my thumbs were so sore (from doing just that) that they were almost bleeding."

> Jordon's 7 3/4-pounder bit about a second after a throw-back fish had gotten off the hook. "The smallest fish I had was a 4-10, and I had one bite that was about a 3, and I wanted to shake him off because I didn't want to mess with him. As soon as the bait came out, the bigger one came up and grabbed it."

> Louisiana's James Kennedy and Texas' Todd Faircloth tied for the final cut position with 41-11. North Carolina's Dave Wolak was first out with 41-09.

> Clark had 68-11 after day 2 at Santee Cooper last year on his way to the 4-day record. One factor that might favor Gutierrez – or somebody else – in the pursuit of the mark is that big fish are moving to the beds by the minute here, whereas the spawners were depleted day by day at Santee.
