Any angler who practiced at Tennessee's Ft. Loudoun-Tellico for more than a few days might as well have taken the pile of $100 bills spent on gas, food and lodging and built a mini-bonfire with it.

And there would have been a ring of fire all around the lake, because pretty much everyone's practice went up in smoke.

The fish hit the bank yesterday afternoon and day 1 of the FLW Tour here was all about the bed-bite.

But it was also like the opening round of a poker game. The raises and calls came in the form of 17-, 18-, and 19-pound sacks, but BassFans will get to see the down-cards tomorrow. That's cut day, and also the second day of bed-fishing. The fish are already picked over, and weights tomorrow could easily average half what they did today.

For the 10 anglers who make tomorrow's cut, that matters little, since weights are zeroed for the final 2 days of competition. Instead, everything right now is about that race to the Top 10, and Chad Grigsby leads it with a 19-06 limit of spawning smallmouths.

Immediately behind him is the emerging Thanh Le with 18-10, followed by Harmon Davis, John Sappington, and Frank Meyer. Here's a look at the current Top 15. Total weight is followed by distance from leader in red:

1. Chad Grigsby: 19-06
2. Thanh Le: 18-10 (0-12)
3. Harmon Davis: 18-05 (1-01)
4. John Sappington: 17-13 (1-09)
5. Frank Meyer: 17-04 (2-02)
6. Chris Baumgardner: 17-02 (2-04)
7. Derek Jones: 17-00 (2-06)
8. Jay Yelas: 16-06 (3-00)
9. Mark Davis: 16-05 (3-01)
10. Sam Newby: 16-03 (3-03)
11. Darrel Robertson: 15-12 (3-10)
12. Alvin Shaw: 14-12 (4-10)
13. Bryan Thrift: 14-10 (4-12)
14. Keith Monson: 14-09 (4-13)
15. J.T. Kenney: 14-04 (5-02)

Tennessee anglers largely struck out today. Of them, Andy Morgan had the best day with 13-05 for 25th place. David Walker's 49th, Jack Wade's 51st, Wesley Strader and Ott Defoe are tied for 74th, and Dwayne Horton's 94th. Mark Mauldin blanked.

The top anglers are fishing a mix – some are in Loudoun, some in Tellico – and their prospects for tomorrow are likewise all over the map.

Some left fish today – especially males, in hopes they'd draw a female tonight. Others burned pretty much everything they had, and have pinned their hopes on tomorrow's sky.

The forecast calls for mostly cloudy skies. For those who have fish left, that's good news. They know where they are, and don't need good light to find them. For those who are out of fish, it's bad news – there may not be enough light to find new quality beds.

Thanh Le fished a community hole, and is worried all the fish were caught.

Interestingly, many of the anglers noted that they'd found their primary areas within an hour or two of practice cutoff yesterday (which was noon). Their glimmer of hope lies in whether they can find similar banks and bottoms once their fish run out.

Again though, that's just tomorrow, because after the cut, there's every chance a new wave of fish will come. And with 190 boats out of the game, there'll be a lot more fish to go around.

The other potential wrench is a deep threat from anyone inside the Top 50. There's definitely a 25-pound bag in the water right now, somewhere, plus any number of 20-plus sacks. That puts everyone in today's Top 10 in serious jeopardy.

Plus, there are other bites going on. Jay Yelas only caught a few bed-fish, and filled out with a pattern. And the very fact that David Fritts is 20th with 13-12 all but guarantees there's a crankbait bite going.

The cut right now is at 16-03. But with the oft-proven theory that bed-fish weights plummet on day 2, it likely could take just 26 pounds to make the cut. Anglers like Fritts with nearly 14 pounds only need to repeat to have a legitimate shot at the cut. And it's easier to repeat a crankbait bite than it is a bed-fish bite.

Grigsby Done Early

Grigsby's doing what he loves (bed-fishing), and he was done fishing at 10:30. He went looking for new water after that. He would up catching a 3-07 later, which he used to replace a 3-04.

"I hated to do that for 3 ounces, but you never know," he said.

"The weights will really go down tomorrow," he added. "A lot of guys are bed-fishing, and I was bed-fishing too, but that doesn't last forever."

He's fishing dirty water on Loudoun, but it's clear enough that he saw two of his fish. He caught the other three bed-fish just working the bait from a distance. His main concern is that he picked over most of his fish.

"But I did learn something this afternoon – what they're using to spawn. When I culled that largemouth in the afternoon, I was 10 miles farther up the river from where I was. I looked at (the spot), swung in, fished down a little stretch, saw what I was looking for and caught a 3 1/2-pounder.

"Tomorrow, I'm not going to quit until I have five, and I won't be comfortable with less than 15 or 16 pounds."

2nd: Le's Fish Burned?

Nevada's Le finished 11th in the FLW Tour points last year, as a rookie. He didn't start as strong this year (123rd at Travis), but took a big step toward averaging out that stumble today.

"I'm feeling good," he said. "Anytime you're in the Top 10, you're reeling good. But I've still got tomorrow."

And that's the mud in the puddle right there – he's bed-fishing in a community hole, and the fish are like a herring bone in a stray-cat shelter (picked clean).

"I caught a lot more than what I expected to catch – I thought maybe I could catch 10 to 12 pounds," he noted. "I just happened to find some sight-fish 2 days ago. All I could see (then) were the males. All the places I went to today happened to have females, and I caught them.

"During practice, I was feeling pretty good," he added. "Everybody was complaining they couldn't get a limit. But I was averaging a limit a day and thought I'd have a decent tournament. When they moved up on beds I was worried, because it was everybody's game.

"But it turned out that helped me, and it worked out just fine."

John Sappington's slowly working through bedding areas with a finesse worm.

About his fish, and his plans for tomorrow, he said: "I'm fishing a community hole, and they're practically gone. They might be there tomorrow, but those are usually the hardest to catch.

"I'm going back to those sight-fish, then scrounge around and go fishing and hopefully catch 10 or 12 pounds. I think 26 or 27 pounds total might make it, so if I can catch 10 pounds, it might be enough."

4th: Sappington Blind-Beddin'

Sappington needed a good day here after his 114th at Travis, and it came in the form of a 17-13 sack of four brown fish and a 3-pound head.

"I had a good day," he said. "I found them yesterday afternoon. A lot of the fish were starting to move up on beds, and I was just covering water – cranking and stuff."

He caught a big smallmouth off a point yesterday that lit the way, and once he got to looking, he spotted a number of deep beds. He coaxed a few fish up with a soft-plastic jerkbait, and that was enough for him.

He started there this morning, but he didn't sight-fish (it was too deep). Instead, he sat back and methodically worked a 1/16-ounce jighead with a Berkley Hand Pour Finesse worm.

He caught about what he expected to, maybe a little less if anything, and fished Loudoun all day.

About tomorrow, he said: "I left three males on beds. I think two of them may have kept, and I could have caught them before I caught my limit, but I left them hoping they'd bring some females to them.

"I'm going to catch everything I can tomorrow, but I may stop if I get 17 pounds. I hope some more fish move up. It's supposed to be kind of rainy, but if it clears up, that would be ideal."

Initially, it would seem clouds and rain would be a plus. He'd be in a better position to defend his cut position if others couldn't sight-fish. But he noted that he's almost out of fish, and doesn't know where any more are right now, so he needs the visibility to find more fish.

"I need a good finish," he added. "I've had a tough go since I came back from the wreck."

Physically, he's still not 100%. But given the fact that he's out there now, so soon after his near-fatal accident in 2004, makes him feel "blessed." And he didn't blame his sub-par finishes of late on his health. "Fishing's between our ears," he said.

5th: Meyer Sick, Fought Through It

Meyer, from Marianna, Fla., is currently the highest rookie in the field, although Bryan Thrift is darn close at 13th.

Meyer's catch today is even more remarkable given the fact he's battling a serious case of bronchitis that nearly forced him to his knees at one point.

"I'm sick as a dog right now, but I had an awesome fishing day," he said. "I was fortunate to have what I did. At about 12:00, I was having a tough time on the front deck of the boat. I kind of folded my arms and took my co-angler fishing."

Frank Meyer, who's battling bronchitis, spent his day working staging fish.

His bag was all largemouths, he's fishing Tellico, and he's catching staging fish, although he did happen into a few bedding bucks.

"I don't think the big females have come in yet. I think we're actually catching the first wave of spawners moving in. I believe the ones I weighed today were in the area immediately adjacent to the beds.

"This is huge for me," he added. "Just to have one day like this your rookie year is huge.

"Hopefully they won't go too far (tonight). They're at the transition point right now, and if more move up tomorrow, I'm good to go. If they move to the beds, then I'm not going to say I don't have a shot, but it'll be more like I'm gut-shot."

8th: Yelas Used Split Attack

Jay Yelas told BassFans in his Big Stick practice report that he had a few patterns working. One of those went away, but the other two are working. One involves bed-fishing, the other (an undisclosed pattern) is good for quality fish too.

His 15-06 limits puts him 8th and 3 pounds behind Grigsby.

"There are a lot of fish moving up on beds, and I think they'll continue to do so," he said. "I think sight-fishing will be a major factor, but I think guys are going to need to complement sight-fishing with other ways of catching them too.

"Today, three of my fish were on beds, and two I caught just fishing. I'm running little pockets here and there over a 10-mile section of Loudoun."

He's anticipating on a "substantial drop" in weights tomorrow throughout the field, which he thinks would put the cut at about 26 1/2 to 27 pounds.

"I should be able to do that (weight)," he noted. "I caught several 2-pound-class fish on beds today that I didn't need."

13th: Thrift Stoked

Red-hot rookie Thrift continues his reign of terror, and it looks like's he'll gain some ground on BASS rookie Derek Remitz this week in the BassFan Rookie of the Year Race.

Thrift finished 2nd at Travis, and sits at 13th here after day 1 – just 1-09 off the cut.

Remitz, who won his first event at Amistad then finished 2nd in the next, slipped badly today at the Clear Lake Bassmaster Elite Series, where he's near-last.

About his day today, Thrift said: "I'm happy with it – happy as I can be.

"I caught my two biggest off beds early, then went fishing and caught two more 3-pounders. One of my smallmouths was a bed-fish."

He fished Tellico, where's he's got a big one saved for tomorrow morning – a 7-pounder. He fished her for an hour and a half today, after someone else had worked her over. But he should be able to get there first tomorrow because he's the 8th boat out.

On whether his quick start is a fluke, or if BassFans are witnessing the real Bryan Thrift, he said: "I don't know. I'm confident. I'll just keep trying and going fishing, and I hope I can keep it up all year. I feel like if I can catch a limit every day in every tournament, I'll at least be up there."

21st: Lefebre's Got More

Dave Lefebre's one of the many anglers who seem to be far back, but really aren't. He caught 13-10 today, so he's right on pace for a 26-pound cut. Currently, he's 21st and just 2-09 off the pace.

"Today was all right, but it could have been much, much better," he noted. "I sight-fished today, and the biggest fish I had – I decided to spend the rest of the day trying to catch it.

"It bit, and I fought it for like 5 minutes, but it got all tangled up. It was one of those hair-raising deals and it got off. I'm hoping it comes back tomorrow.

"I've got a lot left," he added. "I didn't fish any of the places where I've been flipping and doing other stuff. I strictly sight-fished today.

"Yes, I did burn (all the sight-fish), but there are so many fish moving up, you can just go and find more. I found a couple new ones today."

Notable

> Day 1 stats – 200 anglers, 96 limits, 22 fours, 18 threes, 36 twos, 20 ones, 8 zeroes.

> Andy Morgan, as noted, had the best day of all the Tennesseans. He's 25th and 2-14 off the cut. "We lost all of our (local) advantage when it warmed up and the fish moved to the bank," he said. "The local guys took a pretty good butt whoopin'. I wasn't really on much. I just scrambled and fished the conditions – whatever I came to. I started out moving pretty quick with a spinnerbait and buzzbait, and some cranking, then slowed down in the afternoon."

> Mark Mauldin, a local pre-tournament favorite, blanked today. He spent the whole day flipping muddy water up the river, refusing to surrender to finesse. "I can't tell you how disappointing it is," he said. "This tournament was the whole reason I signed up for the Tour. The weather didn't screw up the fish as much as it did the fishermen. I guess I fell victim to trying to catch them how I wanted to catch them. But I went down swinging. I wasn't going to go down with a shaky-head or Senko in my hand."
