"Dude, it was cold and rainy but the fishing was awesome!" That was the sentiment of many of the 200 competitors after day 2 at the Chevy Open (Murray FLW) near Columbia, S.C. Despite a breezy morning,

cloud cover and temperatures near freezing at takeoff, the fishing was hot again today. Oklahoma's Tim Carroll continued his onslaught and brought in a three-bass bag weighing 16-08 to lead the Top 10 cut with 44-09. He quit fishing early once he figured he'd made it.

Six of yesterday's Top 10 (actually 11 due to a 10th-place tie) survived the cut to fish tomorrow.

Local favorite Anthony Gagliardi remained in 2nd after he loaded a limit of 15 pounds into his livewell, which gave him a 41-14 total. Florida's Terry Segraves moved up one slot to 3rd with 40-14 (five bass for 18-11 today), while Jeremiah Kindy moved up two spots to 4th with 39-09 (five today for 18-05).

Arkansas angler Brennan Bosley made a huge leap from 74th to 5th after he weighed 37-10 total (five today for 26-05).

Wintry conditions aside, the lake is fishing more like late pre-spawn, which is probably due to the mild winter up until this week. That's been responsible for the big fish and big weights crossing the scales.

The rest of the Top 10 who will be fishing tomorrow are:

6. Katsutoshi Furusawa: 10, 37-05
7. Cliff Pirch: 10, 36-05
8. Matt Herren: 10, 35-15
9. David Smith: 10, 35-09
10. Dave Wolak: 10, 34-09

Just missing the Top 10 cut on a tiebreaker was Ralph Laster, Jr. His best one-day weight (the tiebreaker) was 7 ounces less than Wolak's 18-09.

Tomorrow the Top 10 will have their weights zeroed and fish Friday and Saturday for the heaviest 2-day combined weight.

Carroll King of the Hill

Carroll's first fish of the day was a 9-10 brute, and he figured right then he'd made the cut. At that point he just went practicing for the final 2 days.

But doubt started gnawing at him and he thought he should go catch another, which he did. Then he went back to pre-fishing again, but decided, "Well, maybe one more."

With a third fish in the well he said, "Now, that's enough." It was more than enough, as his 8-fish, 44-09 weight kept him in 1st place – exactly 10 pounds above the cut.

It never entered his mind that one more fish of the caliber he'd been catching might have pushed him over the 49-08 FLW Outdoors record cut weight set in 2003 at Lake Murray.

Yesterday he fished just one of the five spots he'd found with his Lowrance graph, and today he went to one other of those and caught a 4-pounder.

"I found a new place today where I got that big one," he said. "I'm really excited about that spot. After I caught it, I threw out again and got another bite. I took too long to decide whether to jerk or not, and then it was too late – it had spit (the lure) out.

"I'm kind of glad now, since it should be there for tomorrow. It could have been another 10-pounder."

"This is a dream," he added. "It's unbelievable. I liked this lake in 2003 when we were here, and I really like it now."

He's fishing big chunk rock 16 to 25 feet deep with a 3/4-ounce football jig with a twin-tail grub trailer.

"I don't mind saying what I'm doing," he noted. "Everybody is locked in on what they're doing now. I'm using fluorocarbon line for sensitivity and I think it really pays off – that and my (BassMedics) 2iG UltraStrike rods. My co-anglers haven't been using fluorocarbon line and I think they may not be feeling their bites."

Even with his great catches, he's been frustrated by the number of boats on the lake. Now, with the field cut to 10, he's stoked. "I'm more excited about having the whole lake to move around on than anything else," he said. "I can hit the points I've been watching other boats on the last 2 days. I don't know if there are any fish left on them, but 10 to 15 casts will tell me."

He thinks he'll need at least a 20- to 22-pound average to win, but maybe more. "I won't let up tomorrow," he said. "Not at all, unless maybe I get a 5-pound average. It's hard to cull a 5-pounder, but the way they're catching them I might have to keep fishing."

He's in his 4th year on the FLW Tour and this is his first Top 10.

Today's wind forced Terry Segraves to adjust, and his move paid off.

Segraves Cranking Shallow

Forget all the talk about the shallow bite dying in the cold – Segraves proved it's still on. It may not be as productive as some of the offshore patterns, but it got him to 3rd today with two limits totaling 40-14.

"I'm catching most of my fish on a crankbait in shallow water in the creeks," he said. "There are a lot of fish around, and I'm just going fishing and trying to adapt as the day goes on."

He was on a bite in the back of a creek, but when the wind picked up today the pattern disintegrated. So he moved to the front of the creek and caught five good fish. "I like to fish windy banks even in a cold north wind," he noted. "I just have to change with the conditions. Most of the fish I'm catching are decent 2-pounders or better, but I'm only getting seven or eight bites a day.

"Today the first two I caught I had to measure," he added. "That's kind of lousy with all the big fish being caught. But then I caught five good ones while I was trying to get rid of those two. So it worked out."

Along with his shallow cranking areas he has a couple jig spots where he's caught fish up to 12 feet deep. "I may change up some tomorrow, and fish some areas I didn't fish the first day. The good thing is that just 10 guys will be fishing tomorrow, and that will open up the lake.

"I'll just go fishing and adjust to what I see, and try not to let thoughts of $200,000 get in the way – which is easier said than done."

Bosley Cranky

Bosley, in 5th, caught just four keepers yesterday (and lost two), but today landed 10 to cull up to a big 26-05 and make a giant leap from 74th into the Top 10 at 5th place. This is his 2nd FLW Tour Top 10, in his fourth year on tour. "It feels awesome," he said. "It's been long enough (since the last one). I'm ready to be back."

He says he didn't do anything different today, except get bites and get them in the boat. "I'm just cranking rocks in 6 to 8 feet of water on creek channel swings and stumps," he said. "I have 46 waypoints in my Lowrance GPS and I hit all of those and more over the last two days. I probably ran 100 miles today, kind of a run-and-gun pattern, but fishing slow when I get somewhere."

The bites come in spurts, and he thinks the fish just move up to feed off and on from their pre-spawn staging areas. "My better fish have come from the clearest water," he noted. "I don't like to fish dirty water this time of year."

Today started off cold and rainy, and a small front moved through at midday. "The wind started blowing like 25 mph," he said. "I got more and bigger bites while it was blowing. The front of the boat went under water about 20 times while I was trying to stay in it. Then it quit and started getting sunny, and they slowed down again."

Tomorrow he plans to run his best areas again and expand on his pattern, fishing "whatever looks right. They'll be no stopping tomorrow."

Herren Working Hard

Alabama's Matt Herren got just five keeper bites yesterday and again today, but they were enough to get him 35-15 and 8th place. "I'm just working hard, just grinding," he said.

"There's nothing special to what I'm doing. I'm having to weave in and out of a lot of boats, kind of playing chess with them. I'm kind of hemmed in, and there's been a lot of pressure on these fish.

"Fortunately, none of the guys in my area made the cut, so that may help. I don't know how many fish are in there, but I feel good about what I'm doing. I like my chances."

He's fishing crankbaits and jigs to rocky areas in 8 to 12 feet of water. Today his fish turned on late. "I think the area is reloading, so I might catch 25 pounds there," he added. "Or I could zero. I'll just have to keep fishing hard and working my tail off."

Wolak Happy

Pennsylvania's Dave Wolak was tied for 10th yesterday, and again today, but fortunately for him he won the heaviest-1-day-weight tiebreaker to make the Top 10 cut.

"I didn't know I made it on a tiebreaker until later when my wife told me," he said. "I just saw the board and it only went to 10th and my name was there.

"That's kind of the way this week has been," he added. "The big fish are biting and I haven't caught many small fish. But I'm not catching many each day, just 7 or 8. I had seven bites yesterday and landed five.

"I'm picking them off one by one as they move in – just throwing to isolated cover up to 25 feet deep. I have to recurrently fish each place, going back several times.

"In practice a lot of guys caught fish shallow and may have gotten hung up on that," he noted. "But I came down late and practiced anticipating a cold front. There were still a lot of good fish shallow, but I found quality fish deep too.

"I'm not on them good like some guys seem to be. I'm just on a junk-fishing milk-run and I got a couple quality bites to get here. But I'm really happy to make the Top 10. I stunk it up at Okeechobee and came here with the goal to make the cut."

This is his first year fishing the FLW Tour and his first Top 10. He won the BassFan.com Rookie of the Year Race award last year and qualified for two Bassmaster Classics in the process.

"I'll be going from cold to warm to fish the Classic after this tournament," he noted. "I'm excited about it."

Notable

> Gagliardi will likely be leading the FLW Angler of the Year points after this tournament.

> Kelly Jordon whacked the biggest fish of the year so far in FLW competition – a 9-14 hawg.

> Day 2 stats – 200 anglers, 111 limits (9 less than yesterday), 18 fours, 28 threes, 18 twos, 15 ones, 10 zeroes (1 more than yesterday).

> You can't get more consistent than Toshinari Namiki. He weighed 15-01 both days and finished 25th with 30-02. Were those his pet fish?

> For the second time in FLW Outdoors history, two female co-anglers made the Top 10: former co-angler winner Judy Israel made the cut in 7th (6, 19-15) and Sondra Ranking was 8th (9, 19-12). Mark Cummings won the tiebreaker for 10th place, beating out Homer Stephens. Both had seven bass for 19-14, but Cummings had the biggest 1-day weight.

> Co-angler Bryan Thrift topped the co-angler cut with 9 bass for 33-06 - good enough for 12th on the pro side. Thrift continues his stellar run that started with a win as a boater at the Stren Series at Okeechobee in January, followed by a Top 10 as a co-angler at last month's FLW Tour stop on the Big O.
