Day 2 at the Toho Bassmaster was standard-issue Florida winter fare. A sudden cold front blew in overnight, temperatures dropped 10 degrees, and some guys caught them but most didn't.

As a result, some of the guys who caught them made massive moves from deep in the field.

Takahiro Omori wasn't deep in the field – he was 3rd after day 1 – but he made a big move. He caught a 7-10 and shifted into 1st by 5-13. His limit today weighed 17-15 and his 2-day total is 31-05.

David Walker improved his stock with a 13-12 limit (25-08 total) and moved from 7th to 2nd. Terry Scroggins moved up from 9th to 3rd with a 13-07 limit (24-15 total). Jeff Kriet kept his 4th-place position with an 11-10 limit (24-13 total). Ron Shuffield made a surprise advance. He moved from 54th yesterday into 5th today on the strength of his 17-11 limit (24-07 total).

Here's the rest of the anglers fishing tomorrow, with today's weights followed by total weight in parentheses:

6. Scott Rook, 17-12 (22-11)
7. Woo Daves, 9-07 (22-06)
8. Kevin Wirth, 6-11 (22-00)
9. Gerald Swindle, 11-02 (21-06)
10. Jay Yelas, 16-10 (21-02)
11. Jeff Reynolds, 11-12 (21-01)
12. Kevin VanDam, 9-01 (20-07)

VanDam tied with Kenyon Hill, but won the tiebreaker. Rook was 70th yesterday and Yelas was 79th. Their dramatic comebacks, as well as Shuffield's, show the unpredictable conditions that now dominate Toho. A 10-14 margin separates 1st from 12th, and Omori's lead is based on only one big bite. Tomorrow, before the field cuts to six, a big bite from could easily churn the leaderboard once again.

Conditions were windy, with gusts up to 20 mph, and a steady rain fell this morning. The rain eventually gave way, but the clouds remained, and the air temperature dropped 10 degrees from its high mark yesterday. However, most of the leaders reported stable water temperatures, and the wind didn't seemed to affect the water clarity.

Omori Cranked

On a lake that's legendary for its flipping bite, Omori cranked all day today. It paid off with the day's biggest bass – a 7-10.

"I had a great day today," he said. "I had seven bites and caught 6 keepers. All my fish came from (Lake) Kissimmee today."

He said his big fish bit the crankbait at about 8:30 this morning. "I only caught one keeper from that spot yesterday. But I caught three 3-pounders there today and the big fish.

"The wind was blowing, and I think that helped the fish to bite. I caught my limit by 1:00 then left." He said he wanted to lay off the spot for tomorrow.

"I'll start there tomorrow. I hope there's more fish there."

He finished 146th last week at the Okeechobee FLW. "I had one of my worst tournaments ever last week at Okeechobee," he said. "This is great to do this today."

He noted the water temperatures in his spot stayed about the same, and the wind didn't hurt the water clarity there.

Walker Flipped

"I had a good day today," Walker said. "I did the same thing, in the same area, as yesterday. I just had more bites today. And most of them were early bites.

He flipped Toho all day. "The wind got so bad out there in the afternoon it was hard to tell what you were doing. I had a lot of trouble. I really couldn't catch much after about 1:00. The bites really slowed down."

He shared his spot with some of the other anglers who made the cut. "I saw VanDam pull through there for part of the day. I don't know if I have the right area to win. "I don't have an idea yet.

"A big bite will be the difference. But I don't know anything I can do for a bigger bite.

"Today the fish seemed to spread out a little more and they were on sparser cover. It seemed like guys were catching good fish in open water and in the mats."

He said he spent the entire day flipping a "creature bait" on Toho.

"I don't have a backup spot. I'll go back and do the same thing tomorrow. I have to catch a big fish. I would love to win. I haven't won one yet."

Kriet In Constant Change

Kriet said yesterday that he fished a lot of "different stuff." He said the same thing today.

"I'm changing a lot. Just changing all the time.

"I caught six or seven today flipping a (Kinami) Nories Bug, and I caught some on a worm. I caught about 12 or 13 keepers.

"The fish are real finicky, and I got more of my bites late in the day."

He said the reason he made so many changes was because he wanted a sign from the fish. "You have to experiment and figure out what they want. Today started off real slow, but I knew the fish were there. Once I got a sign, I stayed with it."

He had company on the water – Lee Bailey, Jr. and Kevin Wirth. Kevin Wirth's co-angler caught a 9-pounder from the area today.

"I'm doing things a little different than they are. They were fishing where they were, I was fishing where they were coming to.

"I'm one big bite away from 1st place. I'm fortunate to be here."

He said he's committed to his spot. "It was better today numbers-wise. I've seen what's there, and I'll stay. Once I figure it out and get them to bite, I get two or three in a row."

17 or 18 for Shuffield

Shuffield was one of the surprises today. His 17-11 limit was the 3rd heaviest of the day.

"I fished the same spot as yesterday on Kissimmee," he said. "I caught 17 or 18 keepers. One fish was a 5-15, and another was a 5-pounder.

"I'd been throwing a Rat-L-Trap, but then I picked up a worm and caught those two big fish in 10 minutes. That was a pretty good move.

"At that point I left to lay off the spot for tomorrow. I kept moving around the rest of the day throwing the Rat-L-Trap."

He said the big fish came from a small area without grass. "I don't know why they're there. It's the mouth of a spawning area, and it's a muck bottom. There's a small patch of sandy bottom in it – maybe that's why they're there.

"It was the only spot in practice where I got more than one bite. I didn't have any confidence in it, really. If I slow down even more tomorrow, maybe I can get another big bite in there."

Yelas Went Small

"It was a good day," Yelas said. "Fishing's funny. Yesterday I did the same thing and had four fish for 4-08. Today I caught (16-10).

"I fished a little 4-inch Gulp Wacky Crawler. You'd think it'd be a classic dink bait, but I got big bites on it.

"I fished it on 8-pound Berkley Vanish with a 1/16-ounce weight. It had to be 1/16-ounce – you couldn't get bit on an 1/8-ounce."

He was able to fish the light rig because his spot was protected from the wind. "It was near a canal on Lake Kissimmee. I had to throw the bait out and fish it real slow."

VanDam on the Edge

"The wind made it really hard to fish today," VanDam said. "The bass are ready to move in. They're not really eating fast-moving baits, but if you drop it on their nose, they'll eat it."

He said the wind helped the spinnerbait bite. "I had been fishing a Texas-rigged worm and a spinnerbait. The worm worked better yesterday, but the spinnerbait was better today. I think the wind really helped that bite.

"The spinnerbait should get better each day. I'll probably throw it all day tomorrow – I've got lots of catching up to do. In these conditions, the spinnerbait is the best bet for a big bag."

He said he's fishing an fairly large, but water clarity is the key to his bites. "The clarity is holding, but some areas are getting muddier. I'm catching fish on the line between the clear water and the muddy water – it's a real distinct line."

Notable

> Day 1 stats – 158 anglers, 50 limits (30 more than yesterday), 18 zeroes (same as yesterday).

> Omori's smile is noticeably different – he's no longer wearing braces.

> BASS had a new Jumbotron at the weigh-in and showed video clips from the day's action, as well as an ESPN-graphics leaderboard.

> John Murray finished 56th and Jarrett Edwards finished 70th. Click here to go On Tour With The BassFan Army reps and read their reports.

> Day 1 leader Wirth fell to 8th today. "I could make up a lot of excuses about the wind or the temperature, but I just sucked today. They're biting funny, just like yesterday, and the wind makes it real tough to pick an area apart. I only caught two keepers."

> Scroggins, in 3rd, had a lot of bites today. "I had about 20 bites, but I culled two fish out at the same time. They were in mid-air when I realized what I'd done."

> Dean Rojas was in 5th yesterday but only caught one fish today (4-00) and fell to 35th. "It was a tough day. I had the perfect area but the wind killed it. I can't seem to get it all to go in line. I keep falling out. One of these times it'll work."

> David Fritts has been battling a serious eye injury. He zeroed yesterday but did better today and finished 101st. "They've been pretty good (the eyes), and they're not the reason I zeroed yesterday," he said. "I just didn't catch them. But my eyes did give me problems yesterday. I don't have a pair of sunglasses to put over my glasses yet, and I got a terrible headache yesterday. But I'm getting used to the glasses and bouncing around in he boat."
