The bass at Toho never showed. After all the hype that surrounded Bassmaster's return to Florida's Lake Toho, day 1 of competition proved that a cold front in Florida can shut down even the most prolific fisheries. Limits were the exception, rather than the rule, and Kevin Wirth assumed a narrow day 1 lead with only 15-05 pounds.

In 2nd is Lee Bailey, Jr. with five fish for 15-03. Takahiro Omori only caught four fish, but finished the day in 3rd with 13-06. Jeff Kriet sits in 4th with a 13-03 limit and record-holder Dean Rojas rounds out the Top 5 with five fish for 13-02.

A little over 2 pounds separates 1st from 5th, and the 12th-place cut weight is 11-06. The weather is warming and most of the field agrees the fishery could open up at any time. If Toho's fish decide to show themselves, literally anyone in the field has the potential to make the cut.

Morning water temperatures hover in the low- to mid-50s. If they can inch nearer the 58-degree mark, the fish could make a major move to the beds.

A fog delay held the field back this morning until 9:30. That seemed to hurt the earlier flights and many of the top weights came from the middle and late flights. There is no change to the flight order for tomorrow.

Wirth Had To Wait

Wirth won a recent charity event on Toho. Some considered him a pre-tournament favorite, and he didn't disappoint. "I caught fish all day," he said. "But I really had to try to trigger them to bite. They'd bite at it four or five times, but you had wait. If you swung right away, you'd miss.

"It seems like they're knocking at the bait. You have to irritate them into biting it."

He said the fish weren't on the beds. Even if they were, he said, the stained water conditions would have made it difficult to see them. But if the winds stay minor and the warm temperatures hold, that could change.

"This thing might go wide open. The way the fish are biting, it tells me something's going on. There's a real possibility for big bags tomorrow. Lots of fish are in transition.

"I have five or six areas where they're really wadded up."

He flipped Toho all day, rather than lock through to the other lakes, and said he won't change anything tomorrow. "I'm going to live or die with what I've got."

Bailey Needed Big Bag

Lee Bailey, Jr. is on the bubble. Not for the cut spot, but for his career. He had previously stated that if this wasn't a good year for him, he might pack it in.

"I feel like I really need a good year," he said. "I needed this. This feels really good. It's been a while since I've been up there. I just hope I can do it again tomorrow."

He said he had a tough practice, but a key change on the last day put him on his fish. "I went out the last day and decided to just start doing what I like. I started flipping and got on something pretty special."

His big fish today was a 5-08. "I got some big bites today, which is all you can pray for on a day like today. This lake is fantastic, and I was shocked when I came in to see what the weights were.

"I was flipping on Toho all day. My bite got worse as the day went on. I'm in the first flight tomorrow, and I'm just praying for no fog."

He said his area is small. "I have an area where the fish are getting ready to spawn – it's only about a 100-foot circle.

"I know it's got fish. I think it's got enough for tomorrow, and I hope it's got enough for 4 days.

"The key right now is to fish slow. Nobody's catching much, so a lot of guys are flipping fast and trying to find fish. I fished real slow.

"I'm going to fish that area hard all day tomorrow. You can't lay off on this lake."

Omori Weighed Four

Omori, the current Bassmaster Classic Champion, made the run to Kissimmee lake, then returned to Toho. He only weighed four fish, but one was a 6-pounder – a rarity today.

Takahiro Omori flipped and fished a "fast-moving bait."

"I only had four bites all day," he said. "I caught a 6-pounder, and another 4-pounder.

"I did a mix of things. I caught my big fish flipping. I caught two flipping, and two on fast-moving baits."

He said he was surprised to be in 3rd. "I thought everybody would catch fish. I feel good now, but I don't know what I need to catch (to make the cut).

"I'll fish as hard as I can tomorrow."

Kriet Followed Fish

Bites weren't a problem for Kriet. "I had about 15 bites," he said. "I culled on my last three fish, so the afternoon was better for me."

He said he caught his fish several different ways. "I'm just going fishing. I'm flipping and doing some other things.

"I have an area where the fish keep changing. You have to keep up with them, and follow them.

"I've been using the (Kinami) Nories Bug. I can't get bit on the Flash. But I think I have a little something special going with both my techniques and baits. But like I said, I'm doing a lot of different stuff.

"Today the fish told me what to do. Once they did, I did it."

Rojas Ready

If the fish come up on beds, count on Rojas to ready. He set the all-time Bassmaster 1- and 4-day weight records on Toho 4 years ago.

"I can see a lot of old beds," he said. "And I've seen a few fresh clearings. I've been checking the spawning areas every day. I'm keeping the fish honest. I don't want them to go and me not be there.

"If that water temperature gets to the 57- or 58-degree mark in the mornings, that's when things could happen."

He said his weight today was what he expected based on practice, and that he focused on Toho. "It's hard for me to fish anywhere else here, knowing what this lake can produce."

Daves Doesn't Know

Woo Daves is in 6th. "I don't know how I did it, but I caught them," he said.

Daves is known to excel in tough-bite tournaments. "It's really tough. I don't really know why I do well in those conditions. But these guys won't learn to fish the worm. Maybe that's why."

He said he threw a Zoom Trick Worm and flipped a Zoom Ultra Vibe Speed Craw. "You have to force feed it to them."

He also said the fog delay forced him to change plans this morning. "We got out late, and I had found some fish in Kissimmee in practice. I got out too late to go there today so I fished Toho.

"I went to one spot and it had about five boats on it. I don't like to be around other boats, so I was lucky I had two spots. I went to the other one.

"I'll fish Kissimmee tomorrow. I have a pattern there that's working well."

Notable

> Day 1 stats – 157 anglers, 20 limits, 18 zeroes.

> John Murray's in 7th with 11-12. To read about his day, click here to go On Tour With the BassFan Army reps.

> Denny Brauer's in 45th with 7-10. "I only had seven bites in 3 practice days. I don't have a lot of areas. I never felt the fish set up on the cover. I have no feel for what they're doing."

> Tim Horton had boat trouble. He's in 50th with 7-01. "I had a battery charger that must have been hooked up wrong. It melted a hose. BASS was kind enough to lend me a boat for today."

> Shaw Grigsby, in 59th, made the long run and fished Kissimmee today. "It was a short day, and it was really dumb for me to go to Kissimmee. Once I got there, I panicked and ran back to Toho." He weighed 5-00.

> Mark Davis, who had off-season shoulder injury, came in with 3-10 today and is in 93rd. "The shoulder feels good," he said. "My only problem was not getting bites."

> Western legend Dave Gliebe, who recently moved to Kentucky, fished his first-ever Tour event today. He's no stranger to Toho though – he won the 1978 Invitational here. "I love being on the Tour," he said. "I've always wanted to do it." He's in 95th with 3-08.

> This was Byron Velvick's first post-Bachelor event. He was mistakenly announced on the weigh-in stage as Bryan Velvick. "I had boat problems today," he said. "I lost half a day." He's in 96th with 3-05.
