The first two fish that Jason Reyes boated on day 2 of the Lake Chickamauga FLW Pro Circuit Super Tournament combined to weigh about 14 pounds. He caught another oversized specimen in the afternoon on his way to a tournament-best 27-04 stringer that moved him into the lead at the halfway point.
The Texan, who's in his 14th season of competition at FLW's top level, will take a 3-04 advantage into day 3. He's never been in this position before, but said he's feeling no stress.
"I know I just have to keep producing – there's no way to win this thing without four good bags," he said. "No lead is safe. You could be (ahead) by 10 or 12 pounds and somebody could catch 30-something and you'd get beat."
Only three competitors are within 10 pounds of him right now – a first-year pro and two bona fide hammers.
Day-1 leader Jacob Wheeler, the No. 1 angler in the BassFan World Rankings, is 2nd with 46-10 (22-01 on day 2). Rookie Cole Floyd of Ohio, whose 26-02 haul was the day's second-best, is next with 43-14. In 4th is John Cox, a two-time winner at Chickamauga in 2019, with 41-12 (18-06).
Cody Meyer weighed a 21-04 bag to climb 15 places and round out the top 5 with 38-02. The remainder of the top 10 consists of Spencer Shuffield with 37-15 (22-08), Dakota Ebare with 37-07 (19-02), Fred Roumbanis with 36-12 (19-14), Miles Burghoff with 35-04 (17-00) and Alex Davis with 35-01 (20-13).
Shuffield, who's back in the fold this season after a four-year absence and coming off a 3rd-place showing at Lake Martin, gained 32 places from day 1. Davis leap-frogged 48 anglers.
Of the seven anglers who exited the top 10, only one – Angler of the Year points leader Ron Nelson – fell further than 25th place. Nelson, who began the day in 8th, managed just 11-15 and dropped to 41st.
Conditions will be much less crowded from here on out as the field has been reduced from 204 anglers to 50. Only the top 10 after day 3 will advance to the final round.
Reyes caught his biggest fish – a 7-04 – within 15 minutes of making his first cast of the day. Then he went the next two hours without a keeper before popping a 6 3/4-pounder.
"Your mind starts going crazy, wondering why you have one giant and no other fish," he said. "Then the next one was big, too, and that calmed me down – the cut was made and I was going to get paid.
"After that I just wanted to make sure I caught a limit and I was able to secure that. Then at 2 o'clock I caught another 6-something and I was just like, 'Wow!' Those two big ones early helped a lot with my mental game. It all looks good on paper, but it was still a grind."
Rookie Cole Floyd got some big bites en route to a 26-pound day.
He caught everything on a worm from shallow water.
"I'm definitely on the front side of something. A lot of times you get on the back end of a pattern in practice and it turns sour on you, but I'm fishing a community area with a dumb bait and still catching quality. These guys would've found that if it was going on in practice."
Wheeler had the same type of day he did on day 1, but didn't get any 6-pound bites (he had two the previous day). His biggest fish was a little over 5 pounds and the smallest was 3 1/2.
He's spending most of his time on ledges, but is venturing toward the bank from time to time. All five of his day-2 weigh-in fish were caught offshore.
"It was a good, consistent day and I feel like if I can catch that over the next two days I'll have a real good chance to win," he said. "Today was a different deal, but it's an advantage to be able to make those adjustments. I have one shallow place that I didn't fish today; I decided to let them rest.
"A lot of stuff's going to open up tomorrow and it should be pretty good. I'm excited to be in the position I'm at and I'm proud of Reyes – that was a heck of a bag. I was shocked to be leading with 24 1/2 yesterday because I knew a bag like that was coming."
The 23-year-old Floyd, who's still a student at collegiate fishing powerhouse Bethel University, caught a 9-04 that was the biggest fish of the day. He also had a 7-pounder and three in the 3-pound class.
He had a shot at a phenomenal bag – he lost a fish that he thinks might've exceeded 10 pounds.
"When I lost that giant, I hung my head because I didn't think I was going to be able to live that down," he said. "Then I caught the 9 and the 7 not too long after. It was fun.
"Where I caught those two, I never fished it in practice – I found it during the tournament. I'm excited to see what'll be there tomorrow."
Cox figured he'd need to average 20 pounds per day to have a shot at winning and he's slightly ahead of that pace. He was frustrated for much of the day, but gained some confidence toward the end.
He ended up with a couple of 4-pound-plus fish and three 3-pounders.
"I caught my second good one on a Berkley MaxScent General and that kind of excited me because that's what I won the two tournaments last year on," he said. "I saw that fish and I threw over and caught it. If I can get that thing going, it might get real.
"If we could get sun and no wind, it'd be great. I seem to get the better ones when it's sunny and slick."
