Tom Monsoor was sure someone would overtake him. After how well the Potomac River had produced on Thursday – and how his luck has gone this season – he didn’t think his 16-plus pound stringer today would keep him in the lead through the end of the day-2 weigh-in.

It turned out to be a little tougher day and Monsoor’s 36-04 was, in fact, more than enough to pace the field, a startling development for the 68-year-old from La Crosse, Wis.

“I can’t believe it,” Monsoor said. “It’s unreal.”

The scenario that’s playing out this week seems to fall right into Monsoor’s swimjig wheelhouse. He has an endless amount of confidence when fishing around grass and moving water with that bait, so overtaking Monsoor on the weekend might be a tall task.

Robert Behrle is sure going to try. He caught 16-08 today and moved up to 2nd with 35-02. This marks his first top-20 cut since 2012.

Chris Johnston improved seven spots to 3rd with a 16-11 stringer that gave him 34-02 and guarantees him his best finish of the season.

Virginia native David Dudley gained five places to 4th, where he has 33-09 after sacking 16-01.

Andy Young and Andrew Upshaw both have 33-08 in a tie for 5th as Upshaw caught 17-10 today to punch his ticket to the Forrest Wood Cup.

With 3 1/2 pounds separating the top 10 entering the weekend, there figures to be plenty of shuffling and drama over the next two days as the season winds to a close. There was no such shakeup at the top of the Angler of the Year standings as Bryan Thrift secured his second career FLW Tour AOY crown with a 48th-place finish, thanks to a 15-03 bag today.

Thrift entered the event with a 77-point lead over Andy Morgan, who will compete Saturday after making the cut in 12th place.

Here's a look at the top 10 after the second day of competition, with the deficit margin from Monsoor indicated by red numbers in parentheses:

1. Tom Monsoor: 36-04
2. Robert Behrle: 35-02 (1-02)
3. Chris Johnston: 34-02 (2-02)
4. David Dudley: 33-09 (2-11)
5. Andy Young: 33-08 (2-12)
6. Andrew Upshaw: 33-08 (2-12)
7. Anthony Gagliardi: 33-03 (3-01)
8. John Voyles: 33-01 (3-03)
9. Michael Neal: 32-14 (3-06)
10. Brandon Cobb: 32-12 (3-08)

Day-1 leader Clark Wendlandt caught just 10-11 today and slipped to 39th. Kurt Dove, who was 3rd after Thursday’s round, had 11-02 and finished 43rd.

The biggest mover of the day was Floridian Brandon McMillan, who improved 110 spots behind a tournament-best 20-07 that rocketed him up to 16th and preserved his Forrest Wood Cup berth.

The remainder of the field for the Cup also was finalized today as three berths changed hands. Upshaw’s strong showing carried him from 47th in points to 29th, but he’s locked up a spot no matter where he finishes this weekend.

Former Cup champ Scott Suggs finished 28th and rose from 45th to 32nd in points while rookie Joey Cifuentes surged up to 37th from 48th thanks to his 35th-place finish this week.

Josh Weaver, Tim Frederick and Jim Moynagh all finished 80th or lower and slipped out of Cup contention.

Scattered thunderstorms are expected in the Marbury, Md., area tonight and will last through Sunday with highs remaining in the low to mid 80s.

Back-to-Back Big Ones For Monsoor

> Day 2: 5, 16-14 (10, 36-04)

After a season full of wrong turns and bad decisions, Monsoor hasn’t made a misstep yet this week. Today, he opted to fish for a limit early on and once he checked that off his to-do list, he went looking for upgrades.

After moving to an area he calls his big-fish spot – he’s culled all but one of his fish there both days – he boxed 4-pounders on consecutive casts.

“It was all luck,” he said. “I put the right lure in the right place, but it was all luck. It blew my mind. They both jumped and stayed on the hook. What are the odds of that happening?”

He’s caught the majority of his weight on a swim jig this week and he’s definitely headed back there tomorrow to see if additional quality fish are holed up in the grass.

“We’ll see tomorrow if it holds up,” he added. “I still have to make good decisions each day. I don’t know if those fish will hold up. Every day is a gamble and you have to go do it and see what happens. And then adjust.”

He missed a few bites today and stopped fishing for additional keepers around 1:30 in hopes of preserving some water for Saturday.

“Any time I can fish another day, I’m having fun,” he said.

2nd: Behrle Bummed

> Day 2: 5, 16-08 (10, 35-02)

Some miscues and bad luck have cost Behrle over the first two days, so much that he believes he’d be in the lead if everything had gone his way.

He had two mishaps today, including a 5-pounder on his second cast that came off right at the boat. He also broke off three other fish and made a culling error later in the day that cost him three-quarters of a pound. Still, he finds himself right on Monsoor’s bumper.

“It was just one of those days,” he said. “It was a tougher day for me. Some stupid stuff happened. I had a dead fish on Thursday. I should be out in front.”

He feels that he’s around a couple areas that harbor the kind of bass he needs to win this week. Today, he caught most of his weight in the morning before hitting a lull during the high-tide part of the day. He plans to show them a few different looks tomorrow.

“I’m going to try some new techniques on my sweet spot with the hope to catch 16 or 17 pounds there,” he said.

Robert Behrle overcame a couple mishaps today to move into 2nd place.

3rd: Johnston Anxious to See What’s Left

> Day 2: 5, 16-11 (10, 34-02)

Johnston is coming off four straight finishes of 90th or lower, so to end the season with a top-20 cut and be in contention for the win is a refreshing change for the Ontario native.

“I had to do something this season so I might as well make the most of it,” he said. “Hopefully, it’ll give me some momentum heading into the Northern Costas.”

He hasn’t been catching many keepers, but he’s been fortunate to tangle with some above-average sized fish.

“After the first day of practice, I was ready to get the tournament started,” he said. “One thing about this place is there are only so many good areas to fish. Everywhere I went to I got a couple good bites.”

Once the tournament started, though, those areas attracted a good bit of fishing pressure, but with the field reduced to 20 boats tomorrow, he hopes the fish won’t be as finicky.

“Tomorrow should be interesting,” he added. “There should be less pressure, but there’s only so many fish in these spots and a lot of them got hammered.”

He had his weight today by 12:30 and left one area after catching his last two keepers there. It’s a place he intends to revisit.

“I know more big fish are in that area, but they’re very finicky,” he said. “They’re all 3 to 5 pounds. The thing is I could sit there all day and only get three bites so I want to get a couple fish early and head up there to try for two big ones.”

He’s had the most success flipping a jig on braided line as opposed to dead-sticking a Senko like many competitors.

“I can’t get that to work, but I will throw it tomorrow and hope to get some bites,” he said.

4th: Dudley Says It’s Monsoor’s To Lose

> Day 2: 5, 16-01 (10, 33-09)

If Dudley were in Las Vegas, he’d put a hefty bet on Monsoor taking home the win this week. The conditions are trending too much in his favor to think otherwise, he said.

“Everyone loves the first week of June on Kentucky Lake and this is the week where the grass isn’t too thick and it just suits him,” Dudley said. “I’m coming after him as hard as I can, but this is like putting (Mark) Rose or (Jason) Lambert on Kentucky Lake the first week of June.”

Dudley has gotten dialed in on two areas where he’s been able to time the tide in order to generate bites.

“I’m catching them in two areas doing two different things,” he said. “I learned a little more today on when to be where. If I can get my timing down, I’m going to try a different area in the morning because the tide will be right. I haven’t been in there yet, so if that doesnt work, I can go back to where I’ve been catching them.”

He didn’t catch near as many fish today as he had on Thursday, but still he ranks the Potomac in its current state is among the best he’s seen it.

“I’ve seen it better in terms of numbers of fish,” he said. “The weights are up and this year, the fish are extremely healthy. I had eight keepers today and I came in with 16 pounds. To me, it’s all about getting the better bites.”

5th: Young Feels Right at Home

> Day 2: 5, 15-09 (10, 33-08)

Of all places to remind Young of his favorite lake back in Minnesota, the Potomac River has lined up perfectly with his strengths and preferences so far.

“Ironically, it fishes like my home water – Lake Minnetonka,” Young said. “The best way to fish there is to flip milfoil. That’s one of my favorite ways to fish. I have no clue when it comes to the tides so I’m pretty much bucking down in a couple areas and flipping like a fool.”

He’s mixed in a vibrating jig and a Senko, but the majority of his bites are coming out of the thicker milfoil clumps in 2 to 5 feet of water. He likes his odds of climbing higher on the leaderboard tomorrow and Sunday.

“I think I have a chance,” he said. “I have two or three areas where I’ve been catching them. The Potomac is known for its community holes and fortunately for me, nobody’s been close to me on either spot. Both days, when I reached 15 pounds, I left the spots so I’m hoping I can get some more out of there.”

Andrew Upshaw caught 17-10 today and earned a trip to the Forrest Wood Cup in the process.

6th: Upshaw On the Move

> Day 2: 5, 17-10 (10, 33-08)

Compared to practice, the tournament has gone exponentially better for Upshaw and now the key is figuring out how to prolong it.

“I’m doing the same thing as I was in practice, but just getting a lot more bites,” he said. “Practice was just hard for me.”

He caught two of his best fish pretty early today and had a limit within 90 minutes, but with other competitors fishing in the same area, he tried to offer the fish a different look in hopes to have more options over the final two days.

“I never got complacent,” he said. “I kept switching it up, trying to find something different. You pay attention to who's around and what they’re doing and then you’re trying to figure out something different.”

He culled a half-dozen times today while being focused on moving with the tide.

“I didn’t stay in one area too long,” he said. “In the past, I’ve gotten stuck on stuff and learned that the worst thing is to get stuck in an area because you got a couple bites.

“My big goal was to make a top-20 to make the Cup and I did that. Goal number two is try to win the tournament. All the rest is gravy. Anybody can win it.”

9th: Neal Needs Bigger Bites

> Day 2: 5, 16-03 (10, 32-14)

Michael Neal hasn’t had any issue catching keeper-quality bass so far. Now, he wants to start catching some difference-makers.

“I’ve been consistent for two days,” he said. “I need to be inconsistent in a big way tomorrow. I haven’t lost anything and I’ve caught everything out of three areas.”

One of those places is used up and he probably won’t revisit it.

“I’ve narrowed down my areas and I’m starting to get a better understanding of when to fish them tide-wise,” he added. “That’s hard to do – trying to figure out when to be where.

“I screwed up this morning. I went to my second-best place too late after I spent two hours trying to catch 4s out of a place where I caught two 4s yesterday. By the time I moved, the tide had already come up and I couldn’t see the grass.”

He thinks the reduced field on Saturday should allow him to pick apart his areas with a little more precision.

“There’s no reason I shouldn’t be able to catch five 3-pound bites,” he said. “I just need the bigger ones to help.”
