The winds of change blew across Ross Barnett Reservoir today. And they’re fixing to keep blowing through the weekend as the Elite Series tournament has hit its halfway point. The effects were felt up and down the leaderboard.

The winds picked up around 9 this morning and gusts approaching 40 mph peppered the lake all day out of the south. Compounding the impact of the wind in some areas was the arrival of the dingy runoff from the storm that moved through Wednesday night. Stained water began to encroach on cleaner areas while dirty areas turned to liquid mud.

All of that had some of the day-1 leaders scrambling to keep their names among the top 12 as others made positive gains with their consistency.

On Thursday, four anglers topped 20 pounds and five others had 18 or more. Today, just two stringers eclipsed 18 pounds and those anglers (Hank Cherry and David Walker) used them to overcome day-1 struggles to make the top-51 cut.

Dustin Connell, a 26-year-old rookie from Alabama with six money finishes in his first eight career B.A.S.S. starts, caught 16-11 today and moved from 6th to the top of the leaderboard with 36-07.

“I’ve always wanted to be in the position I’m in right now since I was like 10 years old,” Connell said. “Finally, it’s here, but we have two more days left. I’m glad to be leading, but wouldn’t care if I was in 6th or 10th. I’m going to try to catch the biggest bag I can and see what happens.”

Mark Menendez backed up his 17-pound bag from day 1 with 17-11 today to jump up nine spots to 2nd with 34-11.

Day-1 leader Brandon Card bagged 11-00 and slipped to 3rd, where he has 33-14. Also with 33-14 is Dave Lefebre, who caught 15-10 today to move up three places. Bobby Lane retreated three spots to 5th after catching 11-10, but his 32-08 total has him less than 4 pounds behind Connell.

Here's a look at the top 12 after the second day of competition, with deficit margin from Connell indicated by red numbers in parentheses:

1. Dustin Connell: 36-07
2. Mark Menendez: 34-11 (1-12)
3. Brandon Card: 33-14 (2-09)
4. Dave Lefebre: 33-14 (2-09)
5. Bobby Lane: 32-08 (3-15)
6. Mark Davis: 31-14 (4-09)
7. Keith Poche: 31-02 (5-05)
8. Jonathon VanDam: 30-14 (5-09)
9. Jared Lintner: 30-12 (5-11)
10. Ish Monroe: 30-09 (5-14)
11. Fred Roumbanis: 29-12 (6-11)
12. Matt Herren: 29-09 (6-14)

Jonathon VanDam locked up his first money finish of the season and is now bidding for his first top-12 cut since 2015. He jumped from 17th to 8th today with a 15-01 stringer. Jared Lintner moved up three places to 9th, but did it with just three fish that weighed 14-01.

Ish Monroe made a 13-spot improvement to 10th with a 16-02 stringer and Matt Herren jumped 12 places to 12th with 15-03.

Brandon Lester slid from 5th to 27th after catching just three fish for 6-03. Marty Robinson also slipped out of the top 10, landing in 34th after bagging a 7-12 limit.

The southerly wind will be a major factor again Saturday with sustained blows in the 15- to 25-mph range and gusts to 40. There’s a chance of thunderstorms in the afternoon, which will set the tone for Sunday when heavy rains (2 to 3 inches) and more wind are expected.

B.A.S.S. has shifted the launch site to a ramp on the opposite end of the reservoir’s spillway from where boats have launched the first two days. Anglers will still have to run across the lake to stage prior to blast-off and then run back to the ramp after checking in and weighing in in the afternoon.

Connell Regrouped

> Day 2: 5, 16-11 (10, 36-07)

Connell had three bites this morning and failed to capitalize on any of them. At one point, he sat down in his boat and had a conversation with his marshal, but he was talking mostly to himself.

“I’m done with worrying,” Connell said. “I’m not worrying if I can catch ‘em or not. I’m going to catch the biggest ones I can and go weigh them in and see what happens.”

After gathering himself, he proceeded to go on a four-hour bass binge that saw him sack 16-11 and take the lead in an Elite Series event for the first time in his young career.

“I feel good about it,” he said. “I think I can catch another good bag, but it’s not fast and furious. People watching me on Bassmaster Live might fall asleep because I might not get a bite until 10 a.m.”

After enduring his poor start, he moved to a different area with the idea that he had to salvage a 10-pound bag to keep himself in the mix to make the cut. That’s when he had the chat with himself (and marshal).

“I call them the demons,” he said. “They start talking to you and I’m like, ‘What do I have to do?’ I went from being on the winning deal to catching 10 pounds to save my tournament. When I went do to that, I didn’t catch them that way, so I sat down and decided to stick with my game plan. I didn’t want to look back and second-guess anything.”

He’s had his best areas to himself, but conditions are changing rapidly where he’s been fishing. It’s been a mix of moving baits and baits fished on the bottom that have accounted for his keepers so far.

“It’s definitely challenging,” he said. “It’s windy with high water and it’s muddy. It’s probably your worst nightmare, but the conditions are the same for everybody, so I’m not worried about it. I’ve been all by myself and hopefully I’ll have that again tomorrow. We’ll see.”

Mark Menendez is hoping to improve his execution for day 3.

2nd: Late Cull Key for Menendez

> Day 2: 5, 17-11 (10, 34-11)

Menendez doesn’t like using the term “grind” to describe a tough day of fishing, but there’s no better adjective for Ross Barnett right now.

Over the first two days, he’s been able to manage his areas to his liking, but he’s had some execution issues that have held him back. Today, he lost one he estimated to be at least 6 pounds.

“I’m not getting a tremendous amount of good bites,” he said. “I have to catch a lot to get a few good ones. My efficiency has not been good. Today, it hurt me. I had a mongo one on and it would’ve accentuated my weight pretty good.”

Prior to that, he’d lost three other fish. With four keepers in his livewell and three hours left to finish his limit in the face of mounting winds, he made a move to a smaller area that he hadn’t fished yet.

“I put my Power-Poles down and made a flip with a 3/8-ounce jig and caught my fifth,” he said. “I sat down and retied and made another flip three feet past where I caught the first one and a 3 1/2-pounder got it. That got me up to 14 pounds.”

He made a small cull a little while later, then connected with a 5-pounder in the final hour.

“I’m just plunking around,” he said. “It’s one of the events where you learn as you go. I’m learning something new each day that’s helping me. I’ve stumbled into some better fish where I had bites in practice. I think 10 pounds tomorrow will put me through to Sunday and 15 will give me a chance to win. Anything beyond that will be gravy.”

3rd: Card’s Spots Got Muddy

> Day 2: 5, 11-00 (10, 33-14)

At a couple places Brandon Card stopped to fish today, the water clarity had deteriorated to the point where there was barely an inch of visibility.

“On day 1, I felt good about it because I had several different areas and patterns,” he said. “When one of those deals gets taken away, you scratch your head. The third area I went to up the river was blown out as well. I ran around and ran into mud twice. I don’t need it to clean up that much. All I need is just 5 inches of visibility.”

He’s done most of his damage with a topwater bait and mixed in a couple keepers caught on a vibrating jig today.

“The area I’ve been starting at, that whole deal was still on,” he said. “It was similar as far as the number of keepers (8), but they were all were small. It was like no big ones showed themselves.”

When he left there, he went to another spot to throw a frog. It’s the same spot that produced his 5-12 kicker on day 1.

“I went in there thinking it would be the deal, but it was blown out,” he said. “The mud yesterday hadn’t made it to that point yet. Today, it was blown out. I don’t know if it’ll stabilize or stay muddy.

“I’m going to run back in there and check it, but it was definitely a bummer because that’s not getting as much pressure as my starting spot.”

4th: Lefebre Locked In

> Day 2: 5, 15-10 (10, 33-14)

Lefebre is no stranger to tough tournaments and this one is starting to grow on him.

“I like these tough ones,” he said. “It’s a grind, but it’s the right kind of fishing grind. It’s shallow, muddy water.

“It’s like a different part of your brain is working. You have no idea what’s going to happen. I like the challenge and it’s something I’m used to. For me, the key is getting in a certain mindset. If people cut me off, I’m not going to get mad. I’ll just do my thing.”

He followed the same game plan today as he had on Thursday. The only difference between the days was he had a 5 1/2-pounder in his day-1 bag. He knows the winds will pose a greater challenge as the event wears on simply because of how it can move the water around and affect the clarity in certain areas.

“Everything will be a challenge,” he added. “It’s going to be worse. The rain from the other day is causing mud to come into my creek. What was clear is now chocolate milk and it’s coming to my best area. I’m not sure what’s fixing to happen, but I’m preparing for the worst.”

He has other areas to fish as he says it’s a pattern, rather than a particular spot, that’s been working for him. He’s keying mainly on grass and lily pads.

“I have some places that are better than others,” he said, adding the he worked through three spots today. “It’s all a reaction thing and I’m dialed in. I have something special going on. It doesn’t matter who’s in front of me."

5th: Lane Still Confident

> Day 2: 5, 11-10 (10, 32-08)

Lane is fishing the way he loves to fish – in and around pads and vegetation. While his weight dropped off a good bit today, he knows he’s still one or two hooksets away from being in the driver’s seat.

“I stayed confident all day,” he said. “I had a feeling after I caught my third that I’d catch my fourth and when I caught that one, I knew I’d get my fifth. I’m one bite away from being in the lead. If I catch a 5-pounder, I would’ve culled a 1-04.”

He spent most of the day in the same area as he did on day 1, which put him within sight of Davis and Poche. He caught a good one right away this morning, then lost a couple. From there, he picked one off here and there.

“I’m putting on what I want to go fish tomorrow and I might go to new water or go to same old stuff. I don’t know yet,” he said. “It’s a fun tournament. It’s a great tournament for me so far. I really think I’m still one or two key bites away from being where I need to be on Sunday and that has to happen tomorrow to get there.”
