The winds died down. The waves dissipated. The sun got high. And the fishing got … waaaaay tougher.

After two days, it’s fair to say Toledo Bend Reservoir is not treating the Elite Series anglers as if they’re competing at the top-ranked bass lake in America. Sure, plenty of fish are being caught, but the conditions seem to be conspiring against big fish and big stringers from consistently being hauled on stage.

Most competitors are pointing to the time of year, citing the post-spawn funk that fish in some areas of the lake are in. Others say the decrease in certain types of vegetation is the culprit. Still others say the constant fishing pressure is starting to catch up to the sprawling lake. Add to that two straight chilly nights in the 40s and today being the second day after a cold front and most knew they’d be faced with a more challenging set of variables.

After seven anglers sacked 20 pounds or more on Thursday, just two competitors broke the 20-pound barrier today and they both came from outside the top 25 after day 1 and sit amongst the top 5 entering the weekend.

Rookie Jamie Hartman, who had 23-05 on Thursday, moved up two spots with a 15-12 stringer and is now sitting at the top of the heap with 39-01 at the halfway point.

“It feels good,” Hartman said. “It’s very unexpected, but it does feel good, that’s for sure.”

James Elam walloped 22-10 and advanced 27 spots to 2nd with 38-08. Texan Todd Faircloth moved up three spots to 3rd with a 17-12 stringer that gave him 32-14.

Brett Hite, who was 2nd after day 1, fell two spots to 4th after catching 13-02 that has him at 37-13.

Casey Ashley had the biggest bag of the day, a 23-09 limit that moved him up 49 spots to 5th with 36-12.

Here's a look at the top 12 after day 2, with deficit margin from Hartman indicated by red numbers in parentheses:

1. Jamie Hartman: 39-01
2. James Elam: 38-08 (0-09)
3. Todd Faircloth: 37-14 (1-03)
4. Brett Hite: 37-13 (1-04)
5. Casey Ashley: 36-12 (2-05)
6. Jason Christie: 36-08 (2-09)
7. Jacob Wheeler: 36-02 (2-15)
8. Brandon Palaniuk: 33-08 (5-09)
9. Matt Lee: 33-05 (5-12)
10. Greg Hackney: 33-02 (5-15)
11. Randy Howell: 33-01 (6-00)
12. Dave Lefebre: 32-10 (6-07)

There were several anglers who made big moves to get inside the top 30 today. Mark Daniels, Jr. improved 37 spots to 29th with a 17-10 bag while Scott Rook’s 18-00 stringer bumped him up 36 spots to 25th. Seth Feider made a 29-place jump to 13th. Also, Classic winner Jordan Lee is 28 spots better today in 19th after sacking 17-11.

Day-1 leader Jacob Wheeler was a fish shy of a limit, but his 11-01 bag only dropped him to 7th. Steve Kennedy, who was 5th after Thursday, also had a tougher day with 10-05, but still made the cut in 23rd.

A light south breeze will accompany clear skies and temperatures in the low 80s for Saturday as the top 51 competitors jockey for position on the leaderboard. Only the top 12 will advance to Sunday, when the angler with the highest cumulative weight will be crowned champion.

Slower Was Better for Hartman

> Day 2: 5, 15-12 (10, 39-01)

Hartman said his day-1 effort was propped up by a junk-fishing attack, but today he was able to narrow his focus and, most importantly, convince himself to slow down.

“It was a lot of scratching and clawing,” he said. “I couldn’t get any good bites. I kept swinging and missing and whiffing on fish.”

Finally, when he connected it was with a 5 3/4-pounder.

Hartman said a slower presentation was key to his success Friday

“It looked like it was going to go good then,” he said. “I felt like that first fish earned me a check.”

It was a grind the rest of the way. He culled three times and caught numerous fish that didn’t meet the length requirement.

“I knew it would be (tough),” he added. “I felt it in the morning with the way the cold snap came in. I figured it would be hard. I slowed down as much as I could.”

For a rookie fishing just his third Elite Series event, employing a slow-down approach is a tough chore, but Hartman knew it was imperative if he wanted to stay near the top of the standings.

“It’s hard,” he said. “I just kept telling myself to ‘chill out.’ Then I’d catch a fish and tell myself I had to stay patient. I knew it would be slow and I felt like I was right today. Every spot I fished, I milked it.”

As for tomorrow, he plans to follow the same program as he did today with the focus on being deliberate.

“Big fish live here and you can get a good bite trying to fish for 2-pounders,” he said. “If I had had one more good one today, I’d have jumped way up there. There are enough of them out there it can happen any time.”

2nd: Three 5s for Elam

> Day 2: 5, 22-10 (10, 38-08)

Elam is still riding the surge of confidence he gained from a 4th-place finish at the Bassmaster Classic and now he’s hoping to exploit an area he nearly wrote off at Toledo Bend due to the water clarity.

He caught 15-14 Thursday, but was victimized by several fish that were short-striking his jig trailer. Today, he made an adjustment and his execution percentage increased.

“I feel like I’m on a good deal to hunker down and just fish,” he said. “It’s about all I know to do is what I’m doing. I really didn’t have that many bites today. I caught seven fish, but I knew it would be a tougher day. It helped knowing that.”

James Elam had a trio of 5-pounders in his bag today.

At noon, he had just two fish in the livewell, but both were 5-pounders. He moved into an area that was unfishable on day 1 because of the wind.

“It was still muddy and I wasn’t sure it would be any good, but I caught another 5 and a couple 3s,” he added. “I’m probably going to have to live there a little more tomorrow since it’s not as popular.”

He’ll also take a practice mentality into the weekend. There’s a large local tournament on the lake tomorrow so he might have to go hunt for new areas.

“There are so many places where they are not so I’m still trying to find new stuff,” he said.

3rd: Faircloth Mixed It Up

> Day 2: 5, 17-12 (10, 37-14)

With the tougher conditions today, Faircloth didn’t rely entirely on what he did yesterday. He knew a change was in order and that he had to keep an open mind.

“You have to be willing to change up,” he said. “I caught two of my bigger fish today doing something I didn’t do yesterday. I didn’t hold anything back.”

He caught fish out of shallow water, deeper holes and in-between depths and he hopes all three options continue to produce through the weekend.

“I’m not just doing one or two different deals,” he said. “I have three or four different deals that I’ve caught fish on. When conditions get like that, you have to adjust to it. That’s anywhere we go. You have to be willing to change. It’s hard to do sometimes because you want to keep going with the way you caught them the day before when you need to be doing something totally different.”

He said he’s surprised that the top 5 is separated by just 2 1/2 pounds at the halfway point and knows he’s one bite away from taking control of the tournament.

“I didn’t feel like the weights would fall off as much as they did today. I’m a bit surprised, but I’m glad I’m there, within striking distance,” he said. “Hopefully, tomorrow I’m right there as well.”

4th: Hite Unshaken By Dip

> Day 2: 5, 13-02 (10, 37-13)

Hite didn’t notice a big dropoff in fish activity where he was at. He just didn’t run into bigger fish like he did on Thursday. He’s still confident he can remain among the leaders despite his weight falling off by 10 pounds.

“They bit alright, but I didn’t get any key bites,” he said. “Look at anybody’s bag – nobody is catching five 4-pounders. The guys who are doing well have a couple big kickers and a few 3s mixed in. I just never had the opportunity today.”

He hasn’t relied on sight-fishing at all and likely won’t. He’s fishing around grass and is hoping to run into some post-spawners that are getting their appetite back.

“Where I’m fishing there is so much aquatic vegetation and the fish population is huge,” he said. “It comes down to whether you can trick them. I’m around the right fish. I’m just over a pound out of it. It’s anybody’s ball game. I just want to be within striking distance.”

83rd: Menendez Should’ve Gone Deep

> Day 2: 5, 9-03 (10, 21-00)

Mark Menendez’s practice did not go as he’d hoped and he came into the tournament banking on sight-fishing. In retrospect, he wishes he’d have figured out the offshore bite.

“I got dialed in on some bedding fish and on Thursday, some good ones showed up in my areas,” he said. “I had six or eight that were between 3 1/2 and 6 1/2 pounds. They were all gone. The bucks were still there, but the females were nowhere to be found.”

He caught what he could of the bucks and headed out to deeper areas, hoping to collide with some post-spawners.

“I was very surprised at how slow it was,” he said. “We had an east wind today and that never helps.”

He thinks if he’d spent more time out deep, he may have been able to intercept some fish that actually hadn’t spawned yet.

“You’re fishing for fewer fish, but the quality was better,” he added. “There were some pre-spawners coming in. I tried it for three hours and caught a nice one doing that.”

Notable

> Brent Chapman put an end to his streak of nine tournaments without a money finish. He has 29-14 in 31st and is less than 3 pounds out of 12th.
